Prim walked into the library, exhausted after a long day of school. She was so tired but she still had to study for the exam in potions the next day. She walked over to the librarian and stopped right in front of her desk. "Ma'am?" Prim asked with question on her face. The librarian hadn't moved an inch though Prim had said it quite loud. "Ma'am," Prim said more of a demand than a question which she immediately felt remorse for. The librarian looked up with a look on her face that could only say really?
Prim pushed on, her impatience getting the best of her. "I'm looking for the book by Miranda Goshawk," Prim said her eyes clenched tight, fingers pressed to her temples. This was something she rarely did which worried Prim once she realized she was doing it. She was running her day through her head over and over again trying to make sense of it. It was too much for an 11 year old girl to think about.
First she went to charms class where Vernatis announced their midterm exams in a week. On her way out of charms and to Potions a group of 5th years started picking on her making her late, which of course did not run over well with Price. It also did not go over well with her right arm for it now had a bruise from running into the wall after trying to escape the situation peacefully. After potions was transfiguration in which she got a T on the pop quiz. The only good part of her day was defense against the dark arts. She loved how determined Professor Risa was to make sure her students knew how to defend themselves which motivated Prim to pull her full attention to the lesson. But of course after that was History of Magic which literally bored her to sleep. Literally. Fortunately she was only chewed out and did not receive detention. But even just a lecture was enough to break fragile Prim. Just thinking about it wanted to make her just mope. Last was astronomy which wasn't bad but they hardly studied any stars. Today was focused on learning how they were made, which was quite boring considering several different kinds of people thought they were created in several different kinds of ways, so Prim had no idea whether or not she was actually learning what was true.
Prim sighed as finally snapped back into reality. "So?" Prim asked plastering a terrible fake smile on her face. The librarian lazily waved her arm to a central area in the middle of the library not looking up from her book. Prim's eyes quickly turned to where she had pointed and saw the small sign that had the letters MG engraved in it. She pulled out the book and sat down at the table reading the spells though none of it was going through her mind.
If this is first year I can't imagine 7th.

Distracted by the commotion at the librarian's desk, hazel eyes peered up slowly from the text they had been absorbing and took in the scene that played out there instead. Jack had tried to keep note of whatever fellow students he could, but his focus was mostly on other first years; particularly the Slytherins. The girl who had requested the librarian's assistance was one he had seen around before but hadn't bothered attempting to interact with directly. Now, though, seemed as opportune a time to get to know her as any.
Carefully shutting his book, he picked it and his bag up before carrying them both to the central table where the young woman had seated herself. Walking over to stand behind the seat across from her, he leaned in close and glanced back at the librarian briefly before murmuring in a conspiratory voice, "Helpful, isn't she? And she calls herself a librarian. Seems to hate me as much as any of the ones back home did, but now I'm starting to think it's that way with everyone." He gave a comical sigh. "And here I thought I was special."
The redhead tapped the chair in front of him lightly and asked with a soft smile, "Mind if I join you? Couldn't help overhearing you were looking for a book by Miranda Goshawk. Isn't she the author of The Standard Book of Spells for first and second years?" Reaching into his bag for his own copy, he continued, "Weren't we supposed to purchase one of these as a school supply?"

Prim glanced up at the new figure with a sly smile on her face. Hazel eyes, red hair, big grin. "Helpful isn't she?" he said more of a declaration than a question. "And she calls herself a librarian. Seems to hate me as much as any of the ones back home did, but now I'm starting to think it's that way with everyone. The boy gave a kind of a quiet tap asking, "Mind if I join you? Couldn't help overhearing you were looking for a book by Miranda Goshawk. Isn't she the author of The Standard Book of Spells for first and second years?" He pulled out a book that seemed as if it had only been touched once or twice. "Weren't we supposed to purchase one of these as a school supply?"
Prim sat up in her chair, with a smirk on her face. "About the book, on the train a boy named Timothy Blaine grabbed it and threw it out the window. But the problem here is that I can't possibly let you sit down next to me if I don't even know your name. "
She looked down at her book pretending she didn't care but waiting for an answer. I like this guy already.

At first sight, he already found himself unexpectedly charmed by the sly smile he was greeted with. But regarding what came after, the Slytherin boy couldn't say which delighted him more - the laugh he elicited from the girl with his antics, or the reaction said girl's laugh drew from the librarian. He hunkered down as he attempted to stifle his snickers, muttering to his fellow house member under his breath, "Guess she likes you, too."
Jack watched as the first year sat up, studying the texture of her lovely, light brown hair and entrancing blue eyes. That was right - now he remembered. When he'd seen this girl around before, she often had someone with her. That was one of the reasons he hadn't thought to approach her. Charming as she was, the girl was probably surrounded by people on a regular basis and likely valued her alone time whenever she was able to snatch some for herself.
That assumption could have totally been false, of course, but it was easier for Jack to assume than admitting to himself what he suspected was the truth. He didn't fancy the idea of just being another person trying to compete for her attention amongst a group of others. The redhead wasn't the sort to settle for just being a face in a crowd.
In any case, regardless of what he had assumed prior, she certainly didn't seem to mind having her alone time infringed upon now. Not if the smoothness of her attempt to get his name was any indication. Well...there's the proof that she knows how to handle people. Was that one of the things that Slytherins were supposedly known for? He couldn't quite recall.
Well, two could play at this game. Feeling a little fired up by the unspoken challenge, the boy leaned on his forearms, which he rested on the back of the seat he had intended to take. His stance was casual, as if he were perfectly content with loitering about rather than properly joining her at the table.
"Okay, so I don't know your name and you want mine, but you drop me the full name of some guy who tossed your book out a window?" he asked with a lop-sided grin. "If I didn't get the feeling you're not that type of girl, I'd almost wonder if you were trying to get me to go pick a fight with him for you. I bet you know a load of guys who would do that to win your favor, huh?"
Jack sneered. "With you flinging around something as important as a person's name, though, can you blame me for being wary about just giving you mine? Or is the honor of sitting next to you and sharing the air you breathe supposed to make up for that?"

Prim was completely befuddled by this boy's reaction to her playing around. She could only hope it didn't show on her face. What is he trying to say? Prim thought over his words. If I didn't get the feeling your not that type of girl, I'd almost wonder if you were trying to get me to go pick a fight with him for you....a load of guys who'd do that to win your favor....or is the honor of sitting next to you and sharing the air you breathe supposed to make up for that....
Prim was so surprised that he had seen her as this type of person because she was the complete opposite. She had several acquaintances but only two people who she could truly call friend. And overall only two were boys. "Well your thoughts are correct because I am definitely not that type of girl," Prim said back to her normal self.
Prim thought back to his words again. He's trying to make me mad! "Well first of all if you not knowing my name is a problem then I should probably try to resolve it. My name is Primrose Mcarthy, at your service." Prim smiled imitating the boys hilariously lop-sided grin. "But you can call me Prim."

The pause before her answer caused the boy to second-guess himself. Had he taken his teasing too far? Come on too strong? She seemed to feel the need to assure him that she was not what he had, in jest, suggested, and he hoped that wasn’t a subtle indication that he had offended her.
Whatever the case, he thought it would have been better to tone things down a bit. Nodding at her name, which he was the slightest bit disappointed had been given so easily, his smile softened when he said, “That’s a pretty name. Prim.” Straightening back up off the chair, he offered a hand to shake. “Mine’s Jack Burnett. I’ve seen you around and all, but it’s nice to finally meet you properly, Prim.”
Jack glanced around, as if checking for others, before confessing, “I have to warn you, I’m a pretty nosy person by nature. So out of curiosity, why did some guy named Timothy Blaine throw your book out the window? Is he a friend of yours? A bully?” The fact that she knew his name made him wonder if she had discovered it after the fact, or before the boy had disposed of her book.
He knew better than to jump to conclusions about Prim’s relation to this Timothy, however. For all Jack knew, he could have tossed it out the window to protect its owner from having some deadly curse placed on her, or to keep it from blowing up the train if it was secretly rigged as an explosive.

Prim stopped talking, waiting for the boy to answer. She liked the little banter that was going on between the two of them. It gave her some time away from her stressful day. But the boy seemed kind of as if he felt he'd done something wrong, or gone a step to far.
He gave a slight nod of his head with a hint of disappointment in his eyes. He then gave a smile warm enough to turn a cold winter day into popsicle, swim suit weather. It made Prim smile as he said words that only made that smile bigger.
"That's a pretty name. Prim, " he said almost as if considering it, thinking about its meaning. "You really like it?" Prim asked. "It means first rose." Prim knew what her name meant but sometimes she wondered what the meaning of her name meant. What does it mean? First rose. Does it have an ancient meaning or is it modern? Of course first rose is the meaning of her full name primrose.
Prim's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the boy's voice. "Mine's Jack Burnett. I've seen you around and all, but it's nice to finally meet you properly, Prim." Prim was happy to finally stop having to call this boy...well...boy in her mind. "Well, it's nice to finally meet you too, Mr. Burnett. Do you mind if I call you Jackie? Jacko? Jack the Man?" Prim almost laughed out loud at her own ridiculousness.
Jack gave a kind of quick look around the room, almost as if checking to make sure no one else were in the room. Prim wondered what this was about but got her answer quite quickly. "I have to warn you, I'm a pretty nosy person by nature. So out of curiosity, why did some guy named Timothy Blaine throw your book out the window? Is he a friend of yours? A bully?"
Prim wasn't quite sure why Jack's curiosity got the best of him on this particular subject, but she wouldn't deny him an answer. "Tim is well...a rather mischievious friend of mine. We met on the train when I had nowhere to sit. There was one empty train car, except for him and this guy Rafael, so I just figured I'd ignore them and they'd ignore me, but I didn't know whose train car I'd just walked into. They played around with me, and Tim saw my book and to him a book is his 'throwing out the window' toy. I was pretty mad then but now it's a memory I treasure."
Prim replayed the event in her head. After it all happened she had been this close to slapping him in the face, but instead she had given him a stern talking to. Well, Rafa called it yelling but Prim wasn't ready to admit to that. Prim laughed out loud just thinking about it. She hadn't seen Tim in a long time. Not since that time on the train. And she hadn't seen Rafa since the hospital wing. Her hands were finally better but her ribs were still a bit sore.
At that moment Prim realized she had done a lot so far this year. It was crazy how fast it had gone by. But another thing that Prim realized was that she knew a lot about herself and close to nothing about this boy. No...Jack. "What about you Jack?" she asked coolly. "What was your Hogwarts express experience?"
OOC: I am SO sorry it took me forever to post! So much has been going on, but the important part is that I gave you a nice long post to sort through!
Thanks for your patience!

"Nice," he commented on the meaning of her name. "Not everyone knows what their name means. Guessing it comes from the word 'prime'. That's pretty neat." Hesitating, he recalled why he didn't usually use people's first names and mentally reminded himself to avoid doing so in the future.
The name 'Mr. Burnett' abruptly pulled him out of his thoughts. "'Aw, 'mister'? Really?" he asked with a wry grin that was almost a wince. "That's what people call my dad. Just Burnett or Jack is fine. Aren't we the same age?" Snorting at her other potential names for him, he added, "'The Man' might be a bit much. But hey, I've been called worse. I'll answer to a lot."
He listened as he spoke, contemplating something. "Hmm...Rafael I've heard of. Tim, not so much. Mischevious, you say?" Perhaps he should go and seek him out. He sounded like a fun-loving sort. Maybe he was even clever. Then again...throwing someone else's book out the window after just meeting them? Maybe not. "Heh. Glad you could have a sense of humor about it. It's funny what people will do to make connections with other people. But I guess that's how humans are. We can't stand to be alone for too long."
His demeanor had slowly transformed into something more melancholy and distant by the end of his sentence, but Prim's question returned his wits to him. "Mine?" he repeated, caught off-guard. He was more used to listening to people talk about themselves, not wanting to know anything about him. Why did she want to know?
"Oh, it was...pretty boring compared to yours, sounds like. It was my first encounter with other magical kids outside of what I saw of them when we went shopping for school supplies, though. I just asked a lot of questions about the school and what others knew. Stuff you probably know everything about yourself." He shrugged.
"Being muggle-born puts me at a disadvantage, so I had to try to make up for it as best I could before we got to school. Didn't want to fall behind everyone else before we'd even begun." With a light chuckle, he added, "It's definitely been an experience, though. There are probably a lot of things that are mundane and ordinary to kids from wizarding families which blew my mind. Makes it easy to enjoy the little things."
OOC: You're completely fine. I know I've been pretty busy myself with the holidays and whatnot. Welcome back and thanks for the long post!

Prim listened at her fullest attention to everything that Jack was saying. It was nice to see his surprise at her asking something about him, almost as if he rarely had people ask about him. It was also cool to hear about his train experience in the way he described it. To him it was boring and not at all exciting but to Prim it was something different. Something out of her own life. Prim didn't socialize a lot mostly because of anxiety but with Jack she felt comfortable...confident.
"Well, Jack, I think that's fascinating. Not a whole lot of people tell me about their Hogwarts experience, so it's nice to hear yours," Prim said with a genuine smile on her face. "Thanks for sharing. Now where is that guy I first met? The one who accused me of being liked by a ton of guys," she joked with a huge grin on her face.
Prim got up out of her chair, noting that the librarian left the room. She grabbed two chairs from the table and pulled them to the window. She then got on one chair standing on her knees looking out toward the dark expanse. "What're you waiting for? Come on! The Jack Burnett I just met is definitely not scared," she said imitating his lop-sided grin for the second time since they met. "Right?"

The boy cast her an incredulous look. "If not a lot of people tell you about their Hogwarts experience, I'm guessing it's because you don't ask. Trust me, the majority of the people I've met are more than happy to talk about almost anything if you only ask them."
Primrose seemed to have something else in mind, however, as Jack struggled to find out what she was up to. "Hey, I still think you're probably liked by a ton of guys," he clarified. "But what does that have to do with anything?" The grin on her face was infectious.
He watched her get up and drag two chairs to the window in order to stand on one. Scratching his head, he followed slowly, trying to puzzle out what she meant to do.
"What're you waiting for? Come on! The Jack Burnett I just met is definitely not scared. Right?"
He laughed at that. "Uh...I don't know about the one you met. But the one I know is a downright coward. A.K.A. a self-preservationist." In spite of his words, Jack checked the librarian's empty desk before climbing up onto the second chair that had evidently been pulled over for him.
"Doesn't mean I'm above bending the rules every now and then, though," he added quietly, reflecting Prim's grin back at her before turning his attention to the window. "What are we looking at, exactly?"
