It was a bright, shining day. not the sort of day that one would expect something to go wrong. Erin, a first year from Slytherin was ditching class. Why? Because Professor Mellowrose of whatschamacallit Magic 'n Arts was boring. She was pretty sure even he fell asleep a few times although she was not going to be able to prove it, she did not have the guts to try. Her life for the most part consisted of class and detention, this was one of those rare moments where she was outside and not in class. She knew she was going to suffer for it when they noticed she was truant but she did not care.

Her hands would search the rocky shore, she would find a nice small, smooth stone about the size of the palm of her hand. A skipping stone. She would palm the cool rock, enjoying its coldness. Hogwarts was certainly a fantastical place but there was a sense of disbelief that came with the magic. she was well aware that it should be a sense of faith, assurance, and emotion behind her spells. Behind anybody's spells. That was her problem of course, one of the reasons that she hated school so much -- it was not about memorizing spells or lists, that was merely a component. There was something else, beyond that intangible force that they were genetically bestowed with, and it was hard. She hated that. She expected this to be easy, after all she, like anyone worth anything here, came from a pure-blood family yet she saw all these mudbloods and first generation wizards not only keeping up but surpassing her. It made her angry, which was good because it made her magic effective. She was not concerned about the ethical ramifications of this of course, how rage granted her mere proficiency, it only created a cycle of embarrassment, self-loathing and anger.

All things she of course took out on the wrong sort of people. The innocent sort. The unfortunate sort. The sort that would not be believed or missed. That was why she was here of course of all placed. That was why she came here essentially untrained, not that her childish mind could understand that. Not that it would be willing to admit it even if she could gather so much. They were not concerned about her becoming the next dark lord, such was a laughable fear of such a young, unassuming and honestly not very naturally talented young girl. However they did want to her abilities to be refined in a useful manner. Rage, passion, force and power are all important and they have their place, much like pain and fear -- they are necessary to life, to growth and to success.

She would fling the stone and it would plunk into the water. It sunk like... well... a rock.

A first day, the first chance to get a glance at this Hagwarts thing... Alex still couldnt believe he was invited to such a place let alone that such a place even exists, it sounded like a prank. It still sounds like a prank, a bad one, but Alex nevertheless still wanted to believe it to be true. He didnt know what was wrong with that wall he phased through or maybe it was some sort of an illusion? An optical illusion, mirros and smoke as they say. He was still carrying his coldren in his right hand, a book that didnt fit in it in his left clentched to his chest in fear he might drop it somewhere and that stupid looking pointy hat on his head with verious cloaks hanging over his left shoulder. This is as fresh as one can be. He would blend in perfectly with the wave of the other new comers he arrived with on the train that led him here, but... He lost them, got distracted for a moment by those gates that seemingly opened by themselves, to lose a group of people as easy as that was not a joke, if it was, it wasnt a very funny one.

After wondering around, he finally spotted... Something that wasnt trees or a single pathed road, it was a body of water. A large one at that, he figured he might as well rest for a bit, no use to panic when nobody's around, might as well take a moment to gather his thoughts and figure a way out of this mess.

"Alright, so... I didnt see any branching paths so far, the castle-like structure still seems pretty far away, if I walk directly towards it, I bet I'll find someone... Hey wait, theres someone right over there, maybe she'll know the way"

Alex started picking his pace and started running in a slow, slightly akward jog towards the girl by the lake.

"Excuse me, do you happen to know wh--"

His words abruptly stopped, it wasnt like he didnt know what to say, he just couldnt say it. Apart of him was emberassed to ask for her help, but another one just wanted to speak up, though something compaled him to stay quiet. A quick moment later he forced himself to continue, clearing his throat to make it seem like the pause was intentional.

"Where the entrance to Hagwarts is located at?"

He finally finished, not completely sure what to make of this situation he found himself continuing

"Wait, are you a student... One of those witches? Is it true they say witches like eating children the most?"

He realized it the moment he said it and it was too late to take it back, not only what he said was rude and uncalled for, it also makes him out to be a fool infornt of this stranger.

The stone must have been broken. She grabbed another one, a better, flatter stone and did the same. With an uninspiring *plunk* that stone too immediately sunk to the bottom. All of the stones around Hogwarts were broken! This sucked, this sucked sooooo muuuuch!

She did not even notice Alexander's arrival. Why would she, all of those dorks were in class.

"Excuse me, do you happen to know wh--"

He startled her, he made her drop her new favorite rock. The rock she had not yet thrown. One that might not have been broken. She might have let out a noise, it could have resembled a *meep* but she would have broken the fool that mentioned it. She had far too much pride to admit to being startled. It was not that Alexander was an intimidating figure, he looked more like a pack mule than a first year.  When she heard the voice she immediately thought that a Prefect had found her, upon this moments appraisal she knew that such was untrue.

"A house elf?" She verbally questioned out loud. She could barely make out who or what was carrying all of those supplies.

"Where the entrance to Hagwarts is located at?"

"What?" He sounded like a damned hick.

"Wait, are you a student... One of those witches? Is it true they say witches like eating children the most?"

"What?" She repeated. He was not making any sense or she was mishearing him.

She would reach for the pointed hat on top of his head and attempt to lift it up.

"The heck man?" She sounded incredulous because she was. She rarely hid her sentiments or her resentment. "I thought you were one of those Huffledork Prefects," she complained. "Why did you sneak out with all of your ****? You're doing a bad job of running away," she announced. "Hagwarts is that way," she pointed up the hill to a large castle-like building in the distance. "Classes are in progress now," she explained with a shrug. "If you are running back instead of away you might want to wait a few hours until classes are over," she recommended "...otherwise the Profs or their kiss@$$ pets will just give you detention." That was her good deed of the day, warning Alexander before he screwed up.

"Have not seen you before," she admitted. "I usually keep track of all of you dullards," she explained as she plucked away from thatever it was that he was carrying if he had not dropped what he had or avoided the attempt. She was looking to see what house adorned his blazer, if he was even wearing one.

Alex was not ready for her responce, she seemed confused at first, as if Alex just fell from the moon but sooner or later it change, her attitude seemed to be somewhat irritated, as if someone were to just disturbe her during her favorite excersize. She mentioned a house elf, Alex didnt know what those were, the comment went right over his head. Then she mentioned Huffledorks perfects, that too made no sense to him, he wasnt aware of any perfect people or things or anything, now he was confused. Not only that but she also accused him to sneak out, possibly from Hogwarts itself.

"Oh, I didnt..."

He was cut short by her pointing out how to reach Hogwarts, mentioning that classes are already insession and that he should wait until they're over before going there otherwise someone will punish him for it. She then mentioned she have never seen him before, well that made perfect sense, he was just arrived, she however seemed like someone who have already been in Hogwarts for a while. She then plucked the book he was holding to his chest, he wasnt sure which book it was, they dont have a name on their covers, just this intricate pattern and texture, he couldnt make them apart just yet. She would see that he isnt wearing a Hogwarts blazer just yet, but rather his old school uniform, it had an emblame stitched into it that had a large S on it, it looked nothing like the Slytherin house emblem.

"I... I am new actually, just got seperated from the rest."

He bent his knees and sat down by her as he rested to culdron to his right and then pulled over the robes to cover it.

"I might as well stay for a little bit, until the classes are over as you said. Hey, I'm Alex, whats your name?"

His he extended a hand to the girl who was now holding his book in a cassual greeting gesture. This whole situation felt somewhat akward and ontop of that he was quite sure he put her in a fairly bad mood. He didnt have any trouble speaking to girls, he did that before after all, they usually seemed to keep their distance from him, he wasnt sure why though, maybe he just couldnt relate to them, maybe they couldnt relate to him either, but here, just maybe things will be different, he might even care what the other kids at this school would have to say or share, after all, this place is supposed to be like one of those fantasy books he was obsessing over.

She snatched the book he was carrying, exposing his blazer. She had never seen the house symbol on his jacket. Who the heck did he think he was making up his own house. She gave the emblem on his jacket breast a disgusted look. She was about to accuse him of making a fake jacket when he admitted that he was lost.

"I... I am new actually, just got separated from the rest."

It was difficult to believe, how long had he been walking? Was he OK? "Seriously?" She looked back in the direction from which he came, she was not even entirely sure how far he had to walk to find another route besides the main gates to enter the school. The grounds were absolutely massive and she was certain that the perimeter was not entirely fenced in but she had never ventured far enough to be certain.

He dropped his cauldron as well as other stuff onto the ground. She was barely able to roll her cauldron in place. Well, the weirdo was tough, that much was certain.

"I might as well stay for a little bit, until the classes are over as you said. Hey, I'm Alex, whats your name?"

"Erin," she replied as placed the book she had taken from him on the top of the pile. It balanced itself on the edge of the cauldron. "You didn't miss much anyways, classes are boring and there is way too many muggle-borns this year," she complained. Maybe it was in London's water she reasoned. It would explain so much. "Have you eaten?" She had no idea if he was simply a late arrival that had been traveling the past few hours or if he had been out there for days. "Snatched this from the kitchen," she admitted as she passed over  a sandwich and a bag of krisps. It was part of the plan, keep out of the way until classes were over for the day and then sneak back in as the wandering students came to and fro.

"Your parents send you to Hogwarts too?"

Her parents had sent her, the acceptance letter was basically a formality. Being from a pure-blood wizarding family, the only sort of magical families that truly mattered the letter was an expectation and a right at this point. She would have preferred a school that was less rife with needless classes, like muggle studies. Who would ever want to study Muggles! She was leagues behind her classmates, partially due to her deviant behavior and partially because she was ill-prepared for even this basic curriculum. Her parents had their reasons, old people always did, but because of a choice she could barely understand she felt mediocre at best, like a Squib at worst.  In fact that was a latent fear, there was evidence that she possessed a magical propensity. She had a magical heritage that could be traced back well over a dozen generations. It was simply not improbable... not possible that she was a Squib, however that fear and with it that anger made her want to lash out. "Looks like yours didn't bother to explain much," she commented, the dork and her had that much in common. "Somebody's days here might suck more than mine," she added with a hint of disgust. "At least I was not left to wander the grounds with a cauldron," she added.

She would look back at the school. Classes were in session. Hmm...

The girl seemed to be shocked that he was new, or maybe that he was wondering all alone? Though a moment before he sat down she took the book he was carring. She eyed him for a bit and then put it on the coldrun after he already sat down. She probably wouldnt have known but he brought nothing but the cloths on his back and whatever was in that coldrun with him to Hogwarts, after all, his departure was quite sudden. With his father going missing shortly before the letter of invetation to the school arrived and the mother slowly decending into deeper depression, not to mention him just finding himself in the middle of a busy street with nothing but the letter grasped in his hand and a bit of money on his person.

She did introduce herself though, the girl's name was Erin and appearently she was consulting him for missing class since it was boring anyway, though she did mention something that simply flew right over his head, Muggle-Born. That is not a phrase he have ever heard of before, what was a Muggle anyway, some sort of magical creature? A magic season of some sort? Maybe it was a form of slang... She seemed a bit concerned though, asking him if he had eaten yet.

"N-no, not yet... I didnt have any money while I was on the train so I couldnt buy anything, figured maybe there was something here"

He was a bit hesitant, though he at least didnt resort to lies. She then showed him the back of crisps and a sandwich she took from the kitchen, score! He was starving but wouldnt admit it, he had too much pride to do so. He took the sandwich from her and proceeded akwardly tearing it in half. It was torn horribly uneven, but he gave her the bigger share back, making it seem intentional and without question or pause began eating it. She then asked whether his parents sent him to Hogwarts and that they didnt explain much to him about it.

"Um... No, they havent... They dont know I'm here actually. I... Didnt have an opportunity to tell them yet"

Well, that'd have been late by now, and even if he could somehow magically find his father or convince his mother to listen to him, he doubts it'd make much of a difference, might as well just dismiss it as just one of those things. Well, it wasnt like that for him at all, as a matter of fact he actually dealt with it fairly poorly at first but he is not the sharing type on anything personal, so he'd rather pipe down on that. She then mentioned that she was not left to wonder the grounds alone

"No kidding. Though... I just found this place very curious... I sort of just tuned out and, well, without notice I just found myself all alone. Though it was probably a bad idea to detour from the main road, figured I have found a short cut, boy was I wrong"

He gave a light laugh as he finished, he was surprising himself with how cheerful he is, well he is now in a world just like one of those books he liked to read, shame he couldnt bring any of those with him.

"Hey, what does that emblem mean?"

He pointed towards her slytherin sign while taking another bite, talking with the sandwich still in his mouth. He couldnt help himself, while he was starving his curiosity wouldnt let anything stop him from bombarding this poor girl with questions.

"N-no, not yet... I didnt have any money while I was on the train so I couldnt buy anything, figured maybe there was something here"

She would hand off a sandwich and some crisps. She was not that hungry anyways, the giant tables of food at every meal made snacking needless. He shoved half of the sandwich into his mouth, she wondered if he even bothered to chew. "I guess you have not had anything to eat," she commented awkwardly. He handed back half of the sandwich, she half-heatedly accepted it only to offer it back. "You can have the whole thing," she announced. "There is so much food here. Breakfast. Second breakfast. Brunch. Lunch. Afternoon Tea. Dinner. Supper." she listed off the various meals, she would be a heifer by the time she reached second year at this rate. He also totally stole that phrase from the Lord of the Rings. Yes, even a pure-blood can enjoy a bit of Muggle fantasy.

"Um... No, they havent... They dont know I'm here actually. I... Didnt have an opportunity to tell them yet"

Apparently he was here and his parents were unaware. That was weird. "Hogwarts is one of the most prestigious magic schools in the world," she replied. That did not make much sense. Someone had to notify Hogwarts that he existed. To pay or consider his tuition. Oh yeah, he was one of them... Muggle-borns. He was a half-blood but she did not know that. It was becoming increasingly more common these days, half-breeds and genetic abnormalities that demonstrated magical proficiency for the first time in generations. It was aberrant and disgusting really. It was why protecting a true line was so important, the assurance that your descendants will also be able to take part in this magical world. Likely he had an aunt or a grandparent, perhaps a second cousin that was magical that knew of his potential and saw him demonstrate the markings of a magician in his youth to be able to identify him as they had.

Her opinion of him dropped further. A... Mudblood? Muggleborn? Well, she knew he was no Slytherin upon meeting him, he was a nervous twitchy dork. He reminded her of a Hufflepuff. A side-kick really. She let out an abrupt laugh, it was cruel but the worst part was the fact that Alexander was not in on the joke. That he was the punchline. His parents were likely mind wiped. They probably had no idea who he was, that he ever even existed. "I would not worry about them," she made a waving motion with her hand. "They probably don't even know that you are gone," she admitted with uncharacteristic frankness.

He was a target. An unclaimed advantage. The poor poor thing...

"You're magical... they're not," she shrugged suddenly interested, mildly engaged. "You probably have a cousin, a grandparent, a... twice removed great uncle... someone who shares the genetic heritage of magic. Magic that you, I guess..." she frowned at him, he did not look magical that was for certain. "That you... probably possess," she shook her head. "No, you have magic," she concluded with no evidence one way or another beyond his presence. There were a number of anti-muggle seals. He would not have wandered this far on his own.

"Normal people... Muggles don't... can't know about Magic," she really did not understand why but it was one the the rules. "Something about abuse. Bad things. Destruction of our way of living... yadda-yadda."  She explained poorly.

"So I guess you're alone which kinda sucks. Well, alone except for whoever the magical person in your family tree happens to be. You probably have a 'crazy' apple on some obscure branch." Yes, she was limiting his resources. He never had many anyways so she was not lying but she was certainly picking her words wisely. Everyone had a black sheep, someone he probably did not regard well. They might be the culprit... they might not. Did not matter but it would limit his desire to reach out not that he seemed really smart anyways. She needed a side kick, he seemed perfect. Kinda pretty. Mostly dumb. The prefect man really.

"But I guess you could owl them," she offered. He probably had no idea what an owl was for. Did not matter, in fact that was a god thing, it made him more dependent.

"No kidding. Though... I just found this place very curious... I sort of just tuned out and, well, without notice I just found myself all alone. Though it was probably a bad idea to detour from the main road, figured I have found a short cut, boy was I wrong"

Oh God, that is utterly stupid. He was perfect."You're perfect..." she said out-loud before she realized that she said that with her mouth as well as her head. "I mean... you poor thing."

"Hey, what does that emblem mean?"

He was pointing at the patch on her jacket. "The what?" She would look down and see the insignia. "Oh that." She would pinch the edge of her jacket and flatten out the symbol. "This is my house... it is like --" she tried to find an analogy. "Like--" her voice trailed off. "A club. The house has these four clubs that are based on our personalities. My club... I mean House is called Slytherin." She explained that pretty poorly. "We live in a certain portion of the castle," she pointed back towards Hogwarts. "By having like-minded peers in our house, we are able to achieve our potential." She smiled. "My House is super cool. The others are OK," she was being gracious, the other houses sucked but she was playing up the nice-person bit for a little while.

"Slytherins like me are super successful. They have goals and they reach them. Not sure what mine is but they think I will have goals and that I will achieve them apparently which sounds pretty cool to me." She took a breath. "There is also the Griffendork-- dors," she caught herself. "They are headstrong, usually the first to do stuff," a truth that could have been phrased better but eh. "Then there are the Ravenclaws... super smart people," something he is definitely not. "Then there are the Hufflepuffs, they are super-loyal to their friends," ironically that perfectly described them. She considered the Hufflepuffs the easiest to control.

"You're probably cool like me and a Slytherin," she lied. Not a snowballs chance in -- well you know where. Still the offered sense of sameness was her intention. It was a terrible lie but he was likely oblivious to this fact considering the novelty of this setting. If he did not accept the rest of the sandwich she would offer it to him again now.

He could be useful. Super useful. She always wanted a fall guy. An assistant.

"As soon as classes are out I will bring you to the hat," she assured him as she searched the ground for a flat rock. All of the rocks here were broken. Terrible skipping rocks but she was going to continue to try again all the same. With the flick of the wrist she would send the rock onto the face of the lake and the stone would not skip. It would make a PLUNK noise and then sink to the bottom. She would glower at the rock, it was the rock's fault, not hers.  "The hat will pick your house. It is magical and it talks," she explained knowing full well that it probably explained nothing but there was no way to really explain how or why they have entrusted such a thing to a talking, sentient hat.

Just a trick of the lighting they said...
