Sam had been fidgety with excitement since she woke up this morning.

It’s today! Finally, she’s coming. Sam checked her snack storage once more, nodding in approval at the sight of each glass jar filled with mouthwatering homemade treats. Rosa’s going to love those chocolate tarts.

Sam recalled the time when she and Rosaline had raced down the streets of Diagon Alley, heading toward the little bakery that always wafted out the most delicious scents. Sam smiled at the memory as she continued tidying up the living room.

It had been a while since Sam and Rosaline last met, and Sam was determined to make today special for both of them. They had planned to read the newly published Muggle magazines at Sam’s place while enjoying the snacks, then Sam’s planning to take her oldest friend to a beautiful hidden spot she had recently discovered.

We can weave flower crowns for each other, Sam thought, picturing the peaceful, blooming meadow. And I’ll tell her what happened when Silas tried to use magic to remove the damp, dirty straw in the owl room last week. She giggled, remembering the look on her brother’s face when he realized the filthy straw hadn’t vanished, but had simply been teleported into his bedroom.

The back doorbell rang. Sam perked up from the sofa and ran down the stairs to answer it. There stood Rosaline, her wavy copper hair styled into a thick braid. She grinned happily when she saw Sam, her blue eyes sparkling. “Hey, how’s it going?” Rosaline said cheerfully, bending down a bit to pull Sam into a tight hug. “Great! Oh, you’ve grown taller again!” Sam gave her a satisfied smile, sinking into the embrace. “I’m sure you’ll catch up!” Rosaline laughed. “Wait, that smells amazing. Were you baking?” she asked, sniffing the air as her eyes lit up. “Yep. Now get in here so we can enjoy a proper afternoon tea.” Sam said, stepping aside to let Rosaline in.

The thick wooden door closed behind their slender figures, muffling their joyful chatter.

Rosaline woke up with excitement. Today, she was finally going to see her oldest friend, Sam. She had been busy with school, but now it was summer vacation. She could do anything she liked and visit any friends she missed.

Although Sam and Rosaline both lived in London, sometimes Sam was too busy, and other times it was Rosaline who couldn’t make it. So they hadn’t seen each other much this year. They had known each other for a lifetime. Rosaline knew all of Sam’s family, and Sam knew hers as well.

She quickly grabbed something necessary and the star of the day, a Muggle magazine with a serialized thriller story. They had been owling each other about it for months, and the story was very intriguing. She also brought a homemade apple pie, which she and her father had baked the night before. Knowing Sam would prepare more snacks and treats made her mouth water.

She opened the door and walked in the direction of Sam’s house.

When Sam opened the door, Rosaline gave her a big, warm hug. Rosaline replied to Sam’s greeting delightedly, “And how’s Silas? I haven’t seen you two in ages.” She paused a little and said, “Oh my Merlin, I can’t even recall the last time we met!”

Seeing the table full of snacks and treats, Rosaline knew Sam would prepare all of that. She’s such a sweetie! Rosaline thought.

“You are the BEST! You always remember my favorite is chocolate tarts,” she beamed, her eyes brightened up, shining with joy.

Lifting the basket in her left hand, she added, “Hey, I brought an apple pie for you! Hope you’ll like it.” She gave Sam a warm smile.

After sitting on the cozy sofa, Rosaline pulled the magazine out of her bag. “And now, here’s our star of the day,” she joked, raising it above her head with both hands like it was sacred. “Let’s read it!”

but please, don’t ask me who I am. A passionate, fragmentary girl, maybe?” ― Sylvia Plath

God bless Rosaline and her perfect pastry-baking skills! Sam thought as she cut into the mouthwatering apple pie, knowing it would taste like heaven, just like every other dish Rosaline brought to her house.

Sam always thought of Rosaline as a precious friend, always loving and caring toward others. She was quite sure Rosaline had taken note of it last month when Sam mentioned in the letter that she really wanted to have apple pie with fresh cream. Thinking about her thoughtful friend made her smile despite herself. Humming her favorite song, she went to fetch the jar of freshly made cream from the fridge.

Carrying a tray with a steaming ceramic teapot, two cups and two plates, each holding a slice of apple pie and chocolate tart (because it’s hard to decide which to start with, so why not both), Sam quickly returned to the living room.

She handed one plate to Rosaline and gently landed the teapot and cups on the side table. Then she dropped onto the sofa with a loud whoof!

Finally, it was time for the star of the show.

“Right, so the part with the fluffy knife—” Sam cut herself off to take a sip of her brother’s good Earl Grey tea. “That plot twist at the end really freaked me out!” She waved her free hand dramatically. “I didn’t even dare go to the toilet on my own that night. I had to wake Silas up, and you know how he gets when he’s disturbed while sleeping.” She grimaced at the memory of her brother’s sleepy, angry face.

To be honest, the first eighty percent of the story wasn’t scary. The problem was the last twenty percent, so it’s hardly Sam’s fault that she read a thriller set in the attic of a ruined house in the middle of the night. Mean old Silas, however, insisted that it was inhumane to read a thriller full of supernatural elements happening in an attic while living in an attic yourself.

The debate was heated and no conclusion has been reached yet. Sam really hoped Rosaline would be on her side, even though she was much braver and probably wouldn’t have such a strong reaction to the plot. Still, Sam looked at Rosaline expectantly, waiting for her thoughts.
