The Hufflepuff Table 2025-2026

Lydia grinned. There were a lot of other kids at the table now, and she was having a bit of trouble following the conversation, but they all seemed like decent sorts. And it was definitely encouraging that Maisie seemed to think the accidental-magic-that-was-probably-not-metamorphagic was cool.

She noted that Eleanor was excited about exploring -- maybe they could put up a notice in the common room or something, or just try to go out with the other firsties? And maybe Eleanor would know something about how to get into the Ravenclaw tower if her parents had both been Ravenclaws.

"Happy you're in Hufflepuff! Is your whole family magical? Do you live in some sort of magical community?" Lydia still really felt she was being overbearing, but she couldn't help it, she was just so curious about the others.

Another boy answered positively to her question about football -- yes! At least there were some people at Hogwarts who might be up for a muggle game.

"Hey, you play the piano? Maisie plays the flute! Maybe you could play for us sometime?" Lydia herself didn't really know much about music, but music seemed important to both of the other first years. She wondered if there was any sort of music practice rooms in the castle, or maybe the Hufflepuff common room had a piano. The castle was so big and so strange that she honestly couldn't quite fathom what sorts of objects it might hold. Perhaps something else for her to look for with Eleanor, assuming the girl did want to come exploring.

Someone was again asking for her name, that was the problem with there being so many of them, but Lydia happily reintroduced herself: "I'm Lydia Walsh! From Dundee! I like sports and climbing trees, my mom's a witch but my dad's a muggle, and I have two older brothers. And I'm excited for Transfiguration and Flying."

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I see. Well, it’ll have to be… HHUFFLYFIFF!”, said the hat. This, is how the noise made was... interpreted, of course. Maybe, there was, perhaps, a tiny little toad in its throat. The yellow table were jumping for joy, so absolutely besides themselves they were. Janet’s tie and jumper were magically accented with black and yellow, and her house mates enthusiastically introduced themselves at the table.

‘Yellow is definitely my colour; I can work with this’ thought Janet, as she sat by @Finnian Hallowell, Juliette Edwards, Corinna Starling and Dario Procyon at the end of the table, who were soon joined by @Maisie Fenwick Rose Williams, @Malcom McGregor, Maximus Thorne, Katelyn Magnolia, and Robin Grimborn.

They made small talk, and a second year exclaimed that they’d be a full house this year, but Janet wondered where some of the other first years she’d met were, like the ones at Madame Malkins, and Courtney Brothers, who she’d just been on a train with.

Now that she thought about it, a lot of the first years that had been sorted never appeared at the table. The people she’d been on the train with were not the same as the ones that entered the great hall. The oddities were haunting if one thought about it too hard.

The chatter died down as the headmaster called for silence. Professor Lear made some general announcements for the rest of the year groups and then snapped his fingers to commence the feast. Ghosts in waistcoats materialised from the walls, on standby for any service. Platters of roast and cuisines of all kinds somehow flew in from nowhere, and afterwards, all manner of dessert floated down onto the table, from cake to mango sticky rice. A student nearby Janet thanked the elves, and so she did that also.

Pitchers of various beverage would magically fill up whenever they ran low. A wooden pot near Janet appeared full of steaming peppermint tea. She was instantly reminded of the world of Percy Jackson, which she had eaten up during the summer. Some of the first years talked about going to a summer camp, which was interesting.

A red haired girl called Lydia Walsh was introducing herself to everyone. A ghost called Flammingus Fliddle's torso stuck out from a turkey in the middle of the table, listening in on the conversion. In his hands was cradled a little ghost toad that played a tiny ghost harmonica. He told her he loved flying too, and floated away, revealing Janet, who was sat behind it.

"Hi =), I'm Janet Flannel Roll Banana Karen. From Lichfield, which is like a few hundred miles away from Dundee I think. I'm muggle born, and I can't wait for transfiguration too! I read up on it and it's basically alchemy, because you're changing the number of protons and neutrons in the atom, so you could turn anything to gold. It's funny though because I thought potions would be more along the lines of alchemy. There's so much to explore!", said Janet.

The Hufflepuff Table 2025-2026
Forward dated to September 1st

“Tomlinson, Madeline!”

I swaggered up to the Sorting Hat like I’d already won a duel with it. My brother’s a Gryffindor, and I’d been chanting “Scarlet and gold, scarlet and gold” in my head since the train. No way was I ending up anywhere else.

The Hat had other ideas.
“Ah, fiery, brave, oh yes… but you’ve got more than bravado. Loyalty, stubborn as a dragon with a toothache, and a heart that’ll never leave a friend behind.”
“Sure, but have you seen my brother’s House scarf? Send me there.”
“Not Gryffindor. No, you’ll thrive best in… HUFFLEPUFF!”

The cheer that exploded nearly knocked me off the stool. I ripped the Hat off, muttered something unladylike, and marched to the yellow-and-black table. So much for roaring with lions.

I plopped down onto the bench, snatched the first bread roll within reach, and leaned my elbows on the table. The ceiling above us was storming, but down here it was warm, golden, and buzzing with chatter. I grinned at the cluster of new faces around me.

“Well then — name’s Madeline Tomlinson. Pureblood. Was dead sure I’d be a Gryffindor, but looks like you lot are stuck with me instead.” I tore the roll in half, winked, and added, “Guess the Hat thinks I’m loyal. Don’t tell my brother — he’ll never let me live it down.”

I jabbed my fork at the heaping plates. “So, what’s everyone’s story? Any other lions-in-disguise sitting here, or am I the only one? And—more importantly—what’s the fastest way to get dessert before the seventh years inhale it?”

I smirked, leaning back with a spark in my eye. “C’mon, badgers, let’s make this year fun. Who’s in?”

The Hufflepuff Table 2025-2026
Tatiana approached the bouncing, cheerful Hufflepuff table and sat down with outmost amusement. She hadn't expected these loyal little critters to be this energetic, she'd been waiting for Gryffindor to battle with their own. She sat down at the end of the bench, waiting to cheer on her fellow Hufflepuffs and chow down together with them, she seemed more relaxed in this setting. Sure, she hadn't exactly expected to be one, for she hadn't exhibited the cores to be a Hufflepuff over the past years, but life and Hogwarts are just full of surprises she couldn't explain.

The Hufflepuffs we're all she imagined, smiles and warmth, they were passing dishes to strangers they probably won't know for a whole year but still managed to put on a warm smile and say the most sincerest of 'thank you's and 'you're welcome's.

I suppose if this is what I'm gonna survive with for the rest of my time here at Hogwarts, I guess I have to get comfortable, she thought, whilst asking a fourth year to pass the mashed potatoes and offering them some gravy for their steak in return, being a Hufflepuff really already had an effect on her. She just had to get comfortable.

Kahotep, Kafelé, announced the professor holding the sorting hat as the previous student lept up from the stool where they had sat. I nervously stepped forward feeling as though the room had gone deafly quiet. My heart pounding in my chest as i approached and took my seat.
hmmm... i see a love for animals and a passion for nature. A forgiving heart and kind soul... i think you would do well in..... HUFFLEPUFFF!! The hats announcement echoed through the Great hall followed by loud cheers erupting from the far table. A sea of yellow and black waving and cheering at me.
I nervously walked over pulling my hat down further on my head to hide my hair from view. I noticed a couple of girls engaged in a rather spirited conversation. A few other first years seemed to be getting in on the conversation as well. On the train ride I had been able to find a compartment to myself. I was able to escape into my books and read about plants for the entire trip. But here i was exposed to this group of excited students. There was no hiding anymore so i tried to take my fathers advice and at least try to make friends. I'll start with something simple, something easy. Okay here we go...... H....h...hi, my n...na..name is Kafelé. I manage to quietly stammer out as I walk up to the group.

Despite being one of the first to sit at the Hufflepuff table, Shelowyn sat quietly stuffing her face. She gave every new fellow first year a friendly nod before returning to her meal. Names weren't her thing. Faces she remembered very well. Faces and personalities. So she made mental notes of everyone. She wanted to know her fellow classmates. It also allowed some normalcy in this bizarre world.
The table was quick to errupt into many conversations. It seemed odd as she looked over at the other tables. She could practically see the various auras from each house. In that moment, the colors reflected here first impressions of the houses well. Her head bobbed in silent approval. She reached over to grab her cup when a ghost floated up through the table, causing her to flinch. She missed her cup, tipping it all over the table. Her face flushed red. Blue eyes wide as she watched the liquid slowly clean itself up and her cup refill. Then her gaze flicked around the room, her head and then her body slowly turning her around a full 360.
There were lots of ghosts. The pictures on the walls were talking. The food on the table seemed to never end. The ceiling looked like the night sky. It had stars and moving clouds.
She looked down at her plate. Then her cup, pushed them both away and turned her attention to the people around her. Most seemed so comfortable. How many had grown up around magic. It was a part of them just like their blood. It technically is for Shellowyn too but...it felt so foreign. Magic. So insanely cool but frightening. So familiar but so alien. Whatever energy she had left instantly drained. Her body slumped so her head lay on her crossed arms. She tried to focus on the conversations around her. Listening carefully. Observing like she does best.

The Hufflepuff Table 2025-2026
Food! , Nora thought as a mouthwatering feast appeared before her. Then she started scanning for anything that had any cheese in it. That's when she saw a delicious-looking shepherd's pie and went for it!

As she stuffed her mouth and confirmed that it was as tasty as it looked, her shoulders dropped a bit as she sat more comfortably in her chair and allowed herself to relax. As she chewed, she started looking around, taking in her surroundings. Ghosts were flying around, something she had never seen before... But most people seemed very chill about it, as if it was no big deal. Most seemed cheerful, enjoying each other and the food.

There's a cheese platter! How did I not see that before... , she thought to herself as she frowned and reached out to help herself with a variety of small cheese slices.
This place is awesome! I could get used to this., she thought to herself. Aaaaand, there's dessert! Where is the cheesecake...? C'mon... There's got to be cheesecake somewhere... Jackpot! Her lips were not moving but her face and especially her eyes, were saying everything that was going on in her head.

Laid back with a satisfied smile on her face, Nora finished her cheesecake and let her eyes wonder a bit, with no commitment, simply feeling happy about this moment, this place, everything felt great!

Then she noticed a girl with her head laying on her crossed arms while her eyes scanned the people in the room. Nora wondered if she was ok... She finished chewing and decided to try striking some conversation, hoping she would make a new friend.
Hi! I'm Nora. Nora Doyle. What's your name?

Shelowyn was surprised that the sorting was still going on. 'How long have we been here? Do they really expect to start our classes after all...all this?' Her face puckered, as if she had just sucked on a lemon. She already knew how tired she was going to be. So many people. So much noise. Too many new...things...

Then a girl beside her spoke up. "Hi! I'm Nora. Nora Doyle. What's your name?" Shelowyn looked over at her, blue eyes meeting brown. If Nora hadn't been looking so intently at Shelwoyn, she'd have assumed the girl was introducing herself to someone else. Yet, Shelowyn sat staring. Nora. Dark curly hair, dark eyes and pale skin accented by rosey lips and cheeks. Something sparkled in the depth of Nora's eyes. Something that told Shelowyn the two would get along handsomely. Her gaze flashed to Nora's plate before she finally smiled. Well, the cheesecake crumbs told her that too. Cheesecake was, undoubtedly her favorite cake...well, her favorite pie.

Shelowyn looked back up at Nora, her voice oddly quiet in the loud hall. "I'm Shelowyn Bloomthorn." Her back slowly straightened, hands falling off the table as she sat up. She kept a smile on her face while she spoke. It was small but genuine. "Hufflepuff." She added, her fingers lightly grazing the badger patch that had magically appeared on her robes. "I didn't hear much about the houses but this one, especially so. I don't know if I should be excited or worried." Her gaze dropped to the floor, a hand motioning out towards everything around them. "Although, I guess I'm unsure of all of this." A dry laugh, sounded more like she simply huffed out all the air in her lungs before her gaze looked back up at Nora. Shelwoyn paused. Her hand falling back into her lap. She sucked on her teeth then swallowed as if wondering how to continue the conversation. Social skills. Her weakness.

I'm Shelowyn Bloomthorn., replied the girl as she straightened up in her chair, but not before glancing at Nora's plate where just a few crumbs of cheesecake were left.

Nora noticed that and said with a minimum amount of embarrassment, Oh! Yeah...uh...I do love cheesecake!. Then she smiled and began pressing her pointer finger against the crumbs, picking them one by one and then shoving them into her mouth with a funny grin.

It was a beautiful contrast, the two girls. Shelowyn seemed more collected, a world of mystery lying behind those beautiful blue eyes, while Nora's personality bubbled outward for anyone to see, yet so much more still waiting to surface. No doubt, as those two worlds collided, one could only imagine the possibilities and what might unfold if their magic found in each other a place to land and grow. It could be dangerous...and exciting!

Hufflepuff. I didn't hear much about the houses but this one, especially so. I don't know if I should be excited or worried. Although, I guess I'm unsure of all of this., said Shelowyn now looking down, then back at Nora.

I haven't thought about it..., said Nora, lightly pressing her lips and tilting her head, her eyes moving as though she were giving something some serious thought. Truth be told, there had been so many things to take in since she got off the train, and the fact that the wizarding world was brand new to her, there was not much room left in her brain to wonder about Hogwarts' houses. Well... I don't know much about it. I just found out I was a witch, and this whole thing with magic is new to me, so... She shrugged her shoulders with a silly smile and continued, I guess I'm just excited! Well, I usually am, anyway!, Nora laughed at herself.

As my dad always says, it will be what we make of it. And I'm planning on making it a greeaaat adventure!, she finished triumphantly, waving her right hand in the air pointing upward, as if she had just finished an important speech in front of a large crowd, a bit lost in her thoughts for a second. Then she remembered Shelowyn and how she seemed a bit uncomfortable or even scared, maybe. Nora felt a connection with her. Maybe because she had been open and expecting to make friends. Maybe because Shelowyn somehow felt that and was open to making a friend. They did not say those words but in a way, maybe, they did say it some other way. Something about Shelowyn, in that moment, caused Nora's eyes to lock with hers, and it almost felt as though she had known her for a long time. Nora was observant and good at reading people, and in that moment her awareness of the room seemed to fade as she sensed there was way more about that girl then met the eye.

Nora liked her. She just did, for no apparent reason. That thought made her smile. You know what? I think we're gonna have a lot of fun here! And I think we could find out together what this whole thing of Hufflepuff is about...together.

Nora spoke with an inviting smile, but then wondered if she had said too much, as usual, and made Shelowyn uncomfortable. What if Shelowyn did not like her? She couldn't just assume things and go acting like they were best friends already. Her smile faltered, and she quickly added, If you'd like to, of course... She looked a bit embarrassed, but smiled again anyway.

"I do love cheesecake!" Nora said, before eating the rest of the crumbs off her plate.

Shelowyn returned the grin and nodded with subtle enthusiasm. 'I wonder if we will share a dorm together.' Her gaze briefly surveyed those around her when the thought crossed her mind. Most of the new hufflepuffs she didn't recognize. She didn't know if they would get along. 'If I spend 7 years here and only make one friend, that's good enough for me.'

"I haven't thought about it...I just found out I was a witch and this whole thing with magic is new to me...I'm just excited..." Nora said with a laugh. "As my dad always says, it will be what we make of it. And I'm planning on making it a great adventure."

"Oh, me too!" Shelowyn piped in. "I'm new to uh, magic...I think it has already been an adventure. If the rest of our time here is like it has been so far, it will never be boring." She laughed softly, her eyes squinting with a smile. They locked eyes and Shelowyn realized she had properly relaxed. From the moment she stepped through the wall with her dad, she had felt stiff. Like an old branch creaking in a strong wind, hoping it won't snap from the pressure. Nora calmed that storm. Shelowyn took a slow, deep breath. 'I made a friend! Right? Wait, I've never had a friend. How does this work? Do we say we're friends or we just...are? Shelowyn, stop you're overthinking!'

"I think we're gonna have a lot of fun here! And I think we could find out what this whole thing of Hufflepuff is about...together." Nora's smiled seemed genuine. Shelowyn just felt natural. As if there was this connection between them. But Nora's smiled faltered. "if you want to..." Then it was back again.

Shelowyn sniffed loudly, eyes a little wide. "You know..." She looked around, watching the ghosts again. This time with wonder. "I think it would be a lot more fun to have a friend here. I can only imagine how big this place is and how much we could do." She looked back at Nora, blue eyes glimmering. A mischievous smile tugged at the corner of her lips while she spoke. "We can discover this new world together."
