Hit or Miss PV Alan Vanes

"Well I am glad I didn't get to face you in a duel lately, otherwise you might have blasted me to bits with that spell." Amused, the words elicited a slight smile from Ruby. It was always nice to have her skill recognised, even if this might have had more to do with the spell in general. Nevertheless, the comment had come from her expressing her enjoyment of the Blasting Curse. “I still could,” she said flatly, an eyebrow raising. She was trying to be kind and considerate, since Alan was sparing her a detention and hadn’t done anything wrong, but it was still tempting. She was still angry—not at him, but the frustration needed to go somewhere and that was why she was here in the first place.

Apparently, Alan’s favourite spell had been learned from a trip to the Restricted Section. How curious. “What drew you there in the first place?” she asked, studying him with mild interest. It seemed a little surprising that someone so sweet would be spending time in the Restricted Section to begin with, but she supposed that even the people who appeared to be the nicest could have a dark side, and curiosity tended to be a rather powerful force on top of that. She was hoping to make a trip to the Restricted Section herself at some point in the not-so-distant future, although that wouldn’t be remotely surprising to anyone who knew her at all.

She questioned his apology and he responded, "Only if I like them." He liked her? She definitely didn’t dislike him, but they barely knew each other, really. “Hmmm. Well, I’d prefer if you didn’t apologise, as it just wastes time. I can handle being hit—I’m a duellist too.” If she could cling to consciousness after being repeatedly hit hard, if she could accept being knocked unconscious as a very possible consequence of a normal duel, she could take a little pain, especially that of a single water spell.

Alan did indeed end up casting the General Counter-Spell as Ruby had suggested, but she seized the opportunity to hit him more easily before the Impediment Jinx could be nullified. Her spell successfully hit him in that last crucial moment, which brought her some satisfaction. The Conjunctivitis Curse was quite a nasty one—causing eyes to swell painfully, which made it harder to function in a duel—but she didn’t particularly feel bad about it. She knew Alan was good at dodging, so this should impact that and make it easier for her to hit with her next spells, too.
