✽It was another beautiful September day as Avery headed out to the pitch. The breeze gently flapping the tails of her Gryffindor Quidditch robes. She had practiced the day before, but a couple months of not practicing was showing. Her form was off and her response time to find, catch, and chase the snitch was off too. She had to get her head back in the game. She had to help carry her team to victory this year and not repeat last year.
Avery hadn’t realized how tightly she was gripping her broom and snitch in her hands until she felt the wood digging into her skin. She quickly loosened her grip at the realization. She couldn’t risk splintering the broom and rendering it useless for the upcoming match.
The sky was clear when she finally made it to the training pitch. Perfect. This kind of weather always made it easier to get back into the grind of Quidditch. She couldn’t wait for the upcoming match. Even if it meant she stayed on the bench until the last round again. It was still worth it.
Avery released a fluttery golden ball out of her hand and she smiled as it soared into the air. The snitch. This one was a gift from her best friend after they started a Quidditch club for aspiring players or players that just wanted to try something different.
Avery mounted her broom and took flight. The breeze blowing her hair as she hovered in the air. Searching for the snitch. Now where was that mischievous golden ball?

After spending his first weekend at Hogwarts reading his textbooks and doing his first homework lessons, Leo was happy to get to spend some time to himself. Since it was a nice day out he decided to spend some time outside and decided today to go explore a little by the Quidditch training pitch. Something he always enjoyed growing up was going to matches with his family. The crowd, the excitement of the game, the strategy, quidditch was definitely his favorite sport to watch and even had his own favorite team and players to root for. He hoped someday he would be able to join his house’s team and then his family would be able to come and watch him play. Maybe soon he would get to go watch a Hogwarts Quidditch match with his house playing.
But for today, Leo decided to just sit out on the grass and draw some more. While he missed his family already, he had to admit that it was nice to be able to escape for a while and draw freely without them breathing down his neck to study harder. Today Leo brought out his pencils and drawing pad and decided to sit and draw the pitch. Maybe I can hang this up when it’s done. He thought to himself as he began his sketch. From the distance he could see there was someone out on the pitch, although they were a little farther away he could still faintly see the Gryffindor colors on their practice robe. He didn’t think he would be disturbing them just by sitting here so he just continued to sketch out the shape of the pitch until he saw something fly by him, a glint of gold passing by him out of the corner of his eye. “What was that?” He said as he looked around, catching a glimpse of the snitch the person must have been practicing with hovering in the air nearby.

✽Avery had found it. The fluttering golden ball was close to a boy that looked younger than herself, but it was far enough away that he wouldn’t get hurt as long as he didn’t go after the snitch. A smile spread across her face. The rush of adrenaline filling her veins as she prepared for the chase.
She zoomed across the training pitch. The wind rushing in her ears and adrenaline coursing through her veins. It was the joy of the chase.
Of course the snitch was never easy. It zoomed in the complete opposite direction that Avery was going. She quickly made a sharp turn. Taking careful note not to throw too much of her weight to one side. She had learned her lesson about that, and wasn’t willing to do it again.
She was hot on the chase. Barely noticing the younger boy beneath her. She had to get the snitch. Then she could talk if he wished.
Avery smiled as she chased the snitch. She had missed doing this over the summer. She missed the thrill. She couldn’t wait for the fall match. Even though she would probably end up competing in the last round or no round at all, she didn’t care. It was amazing enough that she had been accepted onto the team in the first place. Maybe someday she would get her chance to be the main Seeker, but for now? For now she would be content with being backup.

When Leo glanced back over to where the girl was at before she was no longer there. “Huh, where’d she go?” He asked out loud to himself as he tried to see where she went. Suddenly she rushed by him on her broom, going after the snitch that had passed him moments before. Leo’s eyes widened as he watched her fly by fast and managed to capture the snitch. It was really impressive, he had only just begun his broom flying classes so he could only hope to be able to fly that well so he too could play one day.
While he wasn’t one of the more outgoing types, unlike his siblings who were, Leo decided to muster up the courage to go and talk to her. He put down his sketchbook and pencil, standing up from his spot and looking around to see if the girl had landed somewhere yet. Once he spotted her he quickly made his way over to her. “Hi,” he said softly, “sorry to bother you. I was just watching you practice. That was an amazing catch you just did!” He offered the girl a soft smile as he spoke, hoping he wasn’t bothering her since she was in the middle of practicing. “I love watching Quidditch, I really hope to play for my house’s team someday!” He admitted, feeling himself nervously speaking now since he wasn’t used to going up to strangers and starting a conversation.

✽Avery had done it. The little golden ball gripped tightly between her fingers as she carefully maneuvered her broom to the ground. She watched as the younger boy. A first year by the looks of him walked over to her. His Ravenclaw robes blowing lightly in the breeze. Avery smiled. The snitch still clutched tightly in her hand. She couldn't let it escape now. That would be bad.
Avery smiled at the compliment. Glad that someone had enjoyed watching her practice. "Thanks. It wasn't my best work, but at least it did the job." She laughed at herself. She still was rusty after the couple of months of no practice.
"I'm glad there's more people wanting to play! It's always fun to meet a future competitor. If you want, the school brooms are in that shed over there if you want to learn a thing or two." Avery pointed to a shed near the entrance. She had remembered all the times she had borrowed a broom from that shed before she had gotten her own. As basic as they were, they still did the job just fine for beginners.
"What position do you plan on playing?" Avery asked. Her curiosity getting the better of her. She couldn't help it. She always loved meeting other Quidditch players or even aspiring players. Regardless of their team. They were just people like her and only her competitors on the pitch when she had to use all she had not to get attacked or hit by a bludger.

Leo chuckled softly at the girls words, looking at the snitch in her hand that had just flew by him before. “It was still very impressive!” He looked toward the direction she pointed and then back to the girl, “Really?! That would be awesome!!” His face lit up at the offer, a real lesson in quidditch from a player. Although he was just learning the basics of using the broom, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to learn from someone who is actually on one of the house teams. “I am probably not the best flyer yet but I will do my best.” He nodded, although he was still admittedly nervous to fly in front of someone who had more experience but it would be good for him to get feedback and learn, especially if he wanted to impress everyone and join his own house’s team.
He shrugged his shoulders at her question, he hadn’t thought much about where he would play on the field since he usually was just rooting for his favorites from the sidelines. “I’m not sure what I would be best at, honestly. Maybe you can help me figure out where I would fit best?” He asked her as they started heading towards the shed to get a broom. “My name is Leo by the way, I realize I forgot to actually introduce myself before.” He laughed and offered a small smile.

✽A bright smile filled Avery’s face. She was glad to have someone to practice and teach the ropes of Quidditch to. Flying with people was always more interesting than flying alone with no one around. “Don’t worry about not being the best flier. Everyone starts out rough. I’m still rusty after the summer, so you don’t have to worry about me being too great either.” Avery laughed as she tried to lighten the mood.
“Of course I can help! I’ll let you get a broom, then we can get started!” Avery said as she prepared to take flight again.
Before she could kick off the ground, the younger boy mentioned that his name was Leo. That’s when she realized the most important thing that she had completely forgotten in the excitement of catching her snitch again. “Nice to meet you Leo. I’m Avery.” She responded after regaining her bearings.
After she finally introduced herself, Avery kicked off and hovered a few feet in the air. Not too high that she couldn’t quickly get down, but high enough that she could stretch her legs if needed. She didn’t want to keep Leo waiting since he seemed excited to practice, so she wanted to be ready too.

Leo smiled, excited to actually have someone to learn from and especially since she seemed to be very nice too. “Alright, I will meet you out there!” He said as he watched her kick off from the ground to hover on her broom. Without a second thought Leo ran to the shed where the extra school brooms were, grabbing one and closing the door behind him.
With the broom in hand, Leo threw a leg over and kicked off the ground, steadying himself as he hovered a little above the ground where he was standing a second before. Once he felt comfortable he flew up higher and then made his way over to the practice pitch where Avery was waiting for him. He held on with one hand and waved with the other as he got closer to where the girl was, slowing down to a stop to hover next to her. “Alright, what first?” He asked her, he couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear from excitement. Once he got his skills up he could try out for the Quidditch team, even if he was only on the bench and not a starter he would love to just have the chance to join his house team.

✽Avery smiled as she watched Leo run to the shed. She remembered all too well the thrill of flying through the air and learning the ropes of Quidditch. She couldn't wait to show him a thing or two about Quidditch. Things she had been taught over her past year.
She had always enjoyed broom riding. Honestly, she couldn't even remember the time when she really started to enjoy it. Her father had always used to fly her around when she was little which is probably what sparked her interest. Looking at herself now, she couldn't believe she had gone from the small first year that wanted to play Quidditch to the teen that had finally gotten her chance to play and show what she was worth.
Avery didn't want to do Quidditch professionally. No. It was all fun and games to do it just for Hogwarts. What she wanted to do more than anything was to be an auror. Then she would finally save people that couldn't save themselves from the darkest things in the world. She guessed that was why she enjoyed showing Quidditch to people. It gave her the chance to help someone branch out and discover a new side they had never known before.
A wide grin spread across Avery's face when Leo asked what was first. She knew exactly what would be first. As a warm up and to test his skills, Avery opened her hand and watched as her golden snitch flew out of it. "Catch the snitch." Avery said as she zoomed away and prepared for the search.

Taking Flight
Leo was beyond excited to get to have his first real lesson in Quidditch. After watching matches since he was a child he always wondered how it would be to actually get to play so now was his chance. He wanted to impress everyone when he tried out for his own house team in the future.
As he saw a grin spread across Avery’s face he was confused for a moment until he saw the tiny golden snitch leave her hand, now he knew where this was going. “Catch the snitch.” She said calmly before zooming away to find it. He couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh, it was a clever first lesson for sure. Well this will certainly test how well I’ve been doing in flying class. He thought to himself as he quickly flew off behind her.
Once he got up higher he looked around to see if he could catch a glimpse of the gold in the sunlight. Leo followed with his eyes where Avery was flying as he followed behind. “Man, how do seekers do this? That little bugger is impossible to find.”He said to himself, gripping the broom tightly before zooming off again, making sure to keep his eyes peeled for it. As he was catching up to where Avery was he spotted the snitch fly by him again and off in the distance in the blink of an eye. With a huge grin he quickly went after it, trying his best not to lose sight of it this time.
