Jade dropped her book bag onto the grass, where it landed with an unceremonious thud. The action also caused some of her things to spill out of the bag and begin rolling down the small little hillside where she had chosen to spend her afternoon, which… wasn't great, to say the least. Hurriedly, Jade ran after the various writing utensils that had escaped, desperately trying to collect them before they rolled into the lake. The lake was off-limits for reasons Jade didn't know, but she really didn't want to find out. Thankfully, Jade was able to shove all the writing utensils into the pockets of her robe before they made it to the water. With a sigh of relief after grabbing the last one — a highlighter that had very nearly fallen into the lake — Jade headed back up to where she had left her book bag, hoping none of her other belongings had gotten too disturbed. To her great relief, the only other things that had spilled out of her book bag were a handful of her notebooks, and her planner. Jade carefully put the notebooks away, as well as the writing utensils, but kept the planner out.
Taking a seat in the grass and smoothing out her robes, Jade laid the planner on the ground in front of her and flipped it open. I'll just check to make sure there's no important homework that needs to be tackled… Earlier (she filled out the planner in between classes), Jade had noticed that she didn't have a lot of homework to do this afternoon, which was why she had decided to take a moment to relax by the lake instead. Still, it didn't hurt to double-check, right? Sure enough, Jade's brief inspection of her planner proved that what little homework she had been assigned could be dealt with later, so she put it away and pulled out her iPod and headphones.
Both devices were very old and not in great condition. The headphones were bulky and went over her ears — she didn't have earbuds or anything fancy like that. The wires got tangled every time, no matter how efficiently Jade packed them. The iPod wasn't much better off. It had a cracked screen, and it took ages for it to load, let alone start playing music. However, there was an advantage to its age — it actually worked, unlike the newer devices Jade had seen her classmates carrying around. She didn't know why, nor did she know how to find the answer, but out of all the things to learn, why her iPod worked probably wasn't the most important. Its surprising functionality did mean that on afternoons like these, when she had very little work to do and a desire to relax, Jade could listen to music. Finally managing to untangle her headphones, she plugged them into the iPod and put them over her ears and began looking for a song to listen to. She eventually settled on one of her favorites, an upbeat tune that never failed to cheer her up. With the music playing in her ears, the afternoon seemed to shine with a new, happier light. The sunlight reflected off the surface of the lake, making it shimmer and sparkle, as if it was magic. Maybe it is, Jade thought, smiling softly. It was truly a wonderful day out.

Whenever there was a light breeze, she would step outside without hesitation, settle under a tree, and either quietly observe the people passing by or completely lose herself in a book, shutting out the rest of the world.
The wind carried the scent of lilacs and wet earth. A butterfly hovered lazily above the grass before landing on a daisy near Victoria's shoe. The lake’s surface shimmered like polished glass, broken only by the occasional ripple from passing breeze. Though the sun was high in the sky, a gentle breeze played with Victoria’s wavy hair as she walked toward the lake.
When she stepped outside, Victoria had to bite the inside of her cheek to stop herself from smiling—the weather was truly beautiful, and she couldn’t help but feel a little happier because of it. She was about to quietly head toward her usual spot beneath a large tree when she noticed a pretty girl with brown hair already sitting there, smiling. But that wasn’t what made Victoria pause.
Just as she was about to sit down, her eyes caught on something small and shiny perched on the girl's ear—something that didn’t quite look like an earring, or at least not any earring Victoria had ever seen. Was it magical? A device? A charm? Her curiosity sparked instantly, flaring up like a match.
Still, she didn’t know the girl well. Wouldn’t it be rude to just walk up to her and ask what that thing on her ear was? She had seen the girl once or twice in the Great Hall, but she couldn’t remember ever seeing her wearing that peculiar object before. Her curiosity only grew. She hesitated mid-step, adjusting the strap of her bag on her shoulder. The grass beneath her feet was still damp with morning dew, and she shifted her weight awkwardly as if trying to decide whether to approach or retreat.
Victoria swallowed nervously—she couldn’t just rush over and ask.
Instead, she calmly sat down somewhere nearby, hoping the girl would notice her. Maybe, if they started talking, she could find a way to casually bring it up.

In the middle of a particularly calming song, Jade spotted another girl approaching the lake. The sight of another person drew Jade out of the music, and the world slowly returned to focus, her awareness of her surroundings returning. She turned the music down slightly, to ensure she would hear if the girl decided to talk to her. I wonder what she’s doing here… Jade thought. She was fairly certain she had seen the other girl around before, either in the Great Hall or during classes, but she wasn’t sure if they had ever talked. Probably not. Jade wasn’t always big on conversation. She’s probably just enjoying the beautiful day, like I am, Jade decided.
Jade was about to turn her music back up, but something gave her pause. The girl hadn’t talked to her at all, just taken a seat nearby, but she looked a bit… awkward. It reminded Jade of how she felt when she wanted to talk to people, but had no idea how to start a conversation or approach anybody. I’m probably just imagining things, she thought. Seeing things, whatever. She’d probably get annoyed if I tried to talk to her, anyway. Or… or maybe not. Jade knew, logically, that people’s first reaction in conversations wasn’t annoyance. So if she tried to talk to the other girl, it would be fine. Probably.
Sighing softly in an attempt to physically dispel her nervousness, Jade turned off her music and took off her headphones. The other girl was close enough that she would probably be able to hear Jade, which was good, because getting up to talk felt a bit too awkward. “Hey there,” Jade called, smiling and hoping her voice sounded friendly and not at all nervous. “What brings you to the lake today?” Did that sound weird? I hope she doesn’t think that sounded weird…

Victoria hadn’t expected the girl to notice her while she was stealing glances from the corner of her eye. Her blue gaze, quiet and curious, had been drawn to the faint white glimmer of a small device tucked neatly behind the girl’s ear, half-concealed by a curtain of brown hair. She wasn’t sure what it was at first—it looked delicate, almost out of place—but she found herself staring longer than she meant to.
And then, suddenly, the girl turned toward her.
Victoria froze, eyes widening as if she had been caught in a secret. The girl’s smile was soft, almost disarming, yet there was something behind it—a hint of nervousness, the kind of tightness that a person carries when they’re not entirely comfortable but still trying to be polite. Victoria tilted her head slightly, studying her for a quiet moment, unsure what to do with the sudden attention.
A thought began to take shape in her mind. She remembered overhearing once—snippets of conversation about people who wore small devices in their ears, not as decoration but as help. Hearing aids, wasn’t that what they were called? Perhaps this girl’s little device was one of those. The idea made Victoria’s eyes widen again, not in fear but in a kind of tentative understanding. It explained something. Maybe.
Taking in a deep, steadying breath, she parted her lips. “..Hi,” she said gently. But the word came out louder than she intended—louder than her usual voice, which rarely rose above a soft murmur. She almost winced at the sound, at how uncharacteristic it was, but if the girl did have trouble hearing, then maybe raising her voice was the right thing to do.
It felt strange, though, for the Blythe girl—someone who usually chose silence over speech—to be the one breaking it now.
After a moment, she added, her tone quieting again but still carrying a trace of earnestness: “I usually like spending time here. Reading, or just… watching the lake. It’s peaceful.” Her gaze flicked toward the water before finding its way back to the girl’s face, hesitant but curious. “What about you?” she asked softly. “Why are you here?”

Jade listened as the girl spoke, noting absently that her voice was a little loud. Maybe it’s because of nerves? She thought. Jade herself had experienced similar moments. Or maybe I’m just overthinking things… It’s probably nothing. “I usually like spending time here,” the girl said. "Reading, or just… watching the lake. It’s peaceful.” Jade nodded in agreement. With so few people around, and such a wonderful view of the lake, it did make for a peaceful afternoon or a good reading spot. “What about you?” the girl asked, softly. “Why are you here?”
Now, that was a good question. Jade had an answer, of course, had reasons why she was here, but the question threw her mentally off-balance, so she had to take a moment to pause and collect her thoughts. “It’s relaxing,” she eventually replied, once she had gotten her mind in order. “I don’t come here often, but I don’t have a lot of homework today, so I figured I’d come down for a bit,” Jade explained. “Like you said, it’s a nice place to read, listen to music, that sort of thing.” She gestured towards her headphones, laying in the grass next to her, as a sort of way of explanation.
There was a moment of silence as Jade tried to figure out how to continue the conversation. A few possible questions flitted through her mind, but she decided to settle on introductions -- that seemed to be the simplest option. “Oh, by the way, I’m Jade,” she said, smiling a little. “Jade O’Reily. What’s your name?”
