✽It was a beautiful day. Perfect to spend outside after classes before dinner. Avery breathed in a sigh of relief. As much as she loved Hogwarts, she was always happy for a break after a long day of lectures.
Avery walked along the grounds. The soft grass beneath her flattening at her every step before it sprang back up as soon as her foot moved away. She barely even noticed, though. Her mind still full after the long day.
She sat down a short way from the castle and just looked at the beauty around her. Dinner was coming eventually, but Avery wasn’t hungry. All she wanted to do was be outside and enjoy the beauty of the world for a little while longer.
Suddenly, she heard someone walking behind her. Avery stood up and saw a girl. She was younger than Avery. Probably a first year. Avery walked over and said, “Hi. I’m Avery. What’s your name?”
As she waited for the girl to respond, she took in another deep breath of the fresh clean air. She was glad that it was the weekend. She really did need a break from all the chaos that had happened and the load of homework waiting for her back in the Common Room. ✽

A Beautiful Day
Teagan walked outside almost not noticing the older Gryffindor, lost in her own thoughts of the school and how it exceeded her expectations. The soft crunch of grass under her shoes was rhythmic and almost soothing. Her mind raced with thoughts of her sorting ceremony and her reluctance to go anywhere near the quidditch pitch, she worried if she would be teased about it. Her eyes shot up realizing she's been spoken to and quickly stopped to face the girl. "Oh - im Teagan this is my first year here" she smiled at the other girl softly looking around and brushing her blond hair back from her eyes before extending her hand towards her. "Are you out here by yourself? Or are you waiting on someone?" She looked out to the orange sunset on the horizon and the gentle breeze on her cloak. She tried to sneakily hide the parchment of notes on where everything was she had made to not look as lost as she really was in front of Avery. "Can I ask you something? Does the sorting hat make mistakes?" She blinked a few times finally meeting the girls gaze. Unlike Teagan this girl seemed confident and at home here.

✽Avery smiled. She hadn’t really met any of the new students yet, so now was a perfect time to. “Nice to meet you, Teagan. I’m a second year. How are you liking this place so far?”
Avery would never forget her time spent as a first year. All the memories would never leave her. Good or bad. Her favorite ones were the times she had spent with her friends surrounding her and making her feel wanted instead of the broken person she thought she was.
Avery snapped out pf her thoughts when the girl asked why she was out there or if she was waiting for someone. “Yeah. I’m here by myself. You could say I needed some fresh air after a long day of classes. What about you?”
Avery listened to the girl asking if the sorting hat makes mistakes. Avery thought for a moment, deciding what her answer would be. “I don’t think it makes mistakes. I think it chooses our house based on something we may not always see in ourselves, but it and maybe even others see in us.” Avery smiled.
Avery had never thought of something like that before, but she made a mental note to review it. She had so many friends from all different houses and each with their own personalities. Some she hadn’t expected to be in the house they were in, but somehow they all fit into the bigger picture. One they couldn’t always see themselves. ✽

✽“You have a phone and TV? What are they like?” Avery asked before she realized what had just come out of her mouth. She slapped a hand across her face and said, “Sorry about that. I’ve never used a phone or TV before since I come from a pureblood wizard family.”
Avery smiled as Teagan said her mother was a Hufflepuff. “That’s so cool that she was a Hufflepuff. My best friend’s a Hufflepuff second year. Her name’s Lyanna if you ever get the chance to meet her which I’m sure you will.”
Avery laughed a little before saying, “I know a few. Though I can’t wait to learn more! Magic is amazing and if you ever need some magic tips, come and find me! I’m always happy to show a demonstration!” A grin played across Avery’s face. Magic had always been in her life, but performing it herself was a whole new world opened.
Avery nodded. “Yep! I’m the backup Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team! What about you? Are you thinking of joining any sports?”
While she waited for the girl to respond, Avery glanced in the direction of the sunset. The colors were splashed across the sky and painted a beautiful picture of oranges, pinks, and golds. Avery sighed contentedly. It was a beautiful sunset.
“Sitting down and watching a sunset while we talk sounds amazing.” Avery smiled as she sat down on the grass to watch the sunset.
“Wait. You’re from London? That’s crazy since I live there. ✽

A Beautiful Day
"Yeah I'm from London my dad works for an IT company phones and TVs are nice they help you pass the time especially when you're bored. I'll have to have you over during a break to show you all the muggle gadgets I have" she looked at the ground and shook her head slowly "maybe dueling could be fun but I can't do quidditch. I'm terrified of flying I'm not sure how I'm even going to pass the class." Her face turned bright red in embarrassment finally meeting the girls gaze again. "A witch who's scared to use a broom, pretty ridiculous isn't it?" She tilted her head the thought just hitting her. "So you've never been in a car? Or used a computer? How in the world do you live without Google?" Her curiosity peaked as she'd seen some magic from her mother but mostly she had lived a normal muggle life with all the technology and benefits. "Is there a Google spell or do you actually have to have a book on every topic you might randomly have a question about? Do you have electric lights? I bet your house has a cozy cottage feel to it and is simply wonderful"

✽Avery was fascinated. Her muggle friend had never shown any of her these things while she was still alive. “That’s so interesting! My dad’s an auror. He tracks down dark witches and wizards. My mom. . . well, she works for the Department of Mysteries, so I’m not completely sure what she does.” Avery explained to the girl.
“It’s not a problem. Plenty of witches and wizards are terrified of flying at first. Honestly, it can be quite daunting. Especially when you have both people and bludgers trying to knock you off your broom. It gets easier over time.” Avery smiled reassuringly.
“I wish I knew what dueling was like. Well, the real way to do it. I’ve witnessed duels before, but they still aren’t fully understandable yet.”
“Well, I’ve been in a taxi a few times, so I guess you could say that’s a car. Though, no. I’ve never used a phone and I have no idea what Google is.” Avery laughed. The word sounded very funny on her lips as she tried to pronounce it correctly.
“Yeah. If there’s something I need to know, I usually look it up in a book.” Avery smiled.
“Yep. I have electric lights, but I wouldn’t say the apartment I live in is cozy. It’s more of just a place I live. Though my grandparents’ house in Wales that I stay in quite a lot is beautiful. There’s a large porch with a forest behind it that my cousin and I spend hours exploring. It’s kinda like a cozy cottage in a way.” Avery smiled brightly. She loved her grandparents’ house and couldn’t wait to go back there again hopefully soon. ✽

A Beautiful Day
"explain something to me if you don't mind, dark witches and wizards? You literally have the power to shape the world at you wand tip, and magic powers everything. What would you want to do bad things instead of just enjoying everything you have? Are there a lot of dark witches and wizards? Are we safe here?" Her mom never really brought up the darker side of the wizarding world to her, then again who would to an eleven year old girl. "My mom is a magizoolagist, she spends a lot of time with different animals studying them. I've always wanted a niffler but she says we aren't in the right spot for one. I think she means muggle London." He eyes lit up slightly, talking about home helped her feel at ease. "What's your favorite class to take? There so many here I'm sure a lot of them are good" she laid back on the grass feeling like she's finally caught her breath since stepping off the train. Her mother explained everything to her but seeing and,and being sorted into Slytherin, was an experience she wasn't really prepared for. But this finally felt like a place she could stay and learn and grow.

✽Avery listened to the girl’s question and thought about how she would answer. This first year girl was really making her think and consider things. She needed to spend more time with her or even other first years. They were so different to how she was.
“That’s a question I’ve always wondered the answer to. Something my father once told me is that sometimes things happen to people that shape how they are. My guess is that the reason we have dark witches and wizards is because something happened in their past that made them want revenge. Luckily there aren’t as many dark witches and wizards as there used to be. This place is also probably the safest. There’s special protection spells cast around that block dark witches and wizards from entering.” Avery explained.
“A magizooligist? Wow. She sounds fun. Magical creatures are so interesting! Mufflers are adorable! I’ve only seen one in my life, and I was pretty little, but they would be fun pets!” Avery smiled. She missed the days where her father would take her cool places while her mother flooded herself with work.
“My favorite class? Well, that’s hard to say. I’ve always enjoyed science, so I would say Transfiguration, but I plan on becoming an auror, so I also like Defense Against the Dark Arts. What about you? What class are you most excited to take this year?” Avery asked. ✽

✽Avery smiled and nodded before saying, “Those are great choices for classes and being a curse breaker is super important. Without them, the world would probably be overrun by cursed objects.” Avery laughed lightly as another grin splashed across her face. This first year girl was a joy to chat with!
“Transfiguration spells? Well, I do know a few. I guess I could show you one. It’s simple, so no one will get hurt if I mess up.”
Avery turned to face forward. She needed full concentration for this spell to work, and she had to make it work. Teagan needed to see how amazing magic could be. Even though it wasn’t easy.
She pulled out her wand and focused hard on what she wanted to create. A clear glass cup that if she did the spell correctly, would appear out of thin air.
She imagined the glass cup in very fine detail. She imagined the lip of the glass cup to be just a bit thicker than the rest and for the body where the liquid went to be a wide almost half oval shape. The stand would be a thin tube and the base a wide flat circle to hold it up.
Now she was ready. She firmly said, “Potiri Putine.” The second the words left her lips a flask was formed. It wasn’t perfect, but it did the job for what he girl wanted to see.
Avery let out a sigh snd slumped back a little. Transfiguration spells were never easy and were always exhausting. She gave Teagan a smile before saying, “There you go! A not perfect, but good enough for this flask made with magic!” Avery smiled. Proud of the work she’d done. ✽

✽Avery smiled. Happy that the girl enjoyed the demonstration. Avery hadn’t really performed that spell much before, so it had been fun to do it. Even though it took a lot of concentration. Avery shrugged before saying, “Not too long. It’s better than my first attempt whenever I first tried to do the spell.” Avery laughed at the memory of how deformed the glass had looked.
“Of course you can keep it! I made it for you as a welcome to Hogwarts gift. Do whatever you’d like with it.” Avery said with as smile as the younger girl cradled the glass gently in her hands like it could shatter at any moment.
Avery was amazed that her magical work was actually treasured. Most people knew her as the Quidditch player and aspiring auror instead of the person she also was. She was someone that took things carefully and paid attention to small details. She wasn’t heartless. She was far from it. She actually cared more than she let on or what people could see.
The sunset was still before them. Only moments passing with their conversation. Avery had never seen a sunset like that. It was a sunset of promises for a new year and new friends. A sign that maybe things really would be better. At least for now. ✽
