"So, they're like trading cards or something?" Angelo asked, seeming a bit unimpressed.

"I guess, though I don't trade mine unless I have like, three of the same wizard. I prefer keeping most of mine because of the collection part." It was true. Roman also collected football cards and interesting rocks he found out in the wild. Something about seeing his collection all lined up made him feel like he'd accomplished something (even though his parents weren't especially fond of it).

Angelo mentioned the chocolate aspect and getting cavities, and Roman smiled. "I'll probably eat these over the course of like, an entire year. Definitely too much chocolate in one sitting, that's for sure. About a cavities spell... I dunno. Probably. I may come from a wizarding family but I certainly don't know everything."

Just then, without Roman even noticing they'd approached him, another student entered the cabin. They were quite tall, with hair that was maybe dusty blond? Golden? Roman couldn't quite tell. They had hazel eyes that nearly matched the exact hue of their hair.

"Sorry for interrupting, but is there a free seat in here? I got kicked out from my last cabin."

"No problem," said Roman. Normally he would be pretty pissed about having to meet two new people in a short amount of time, but he was in an exceedingly chatty mood and didn't really mind.

"It looks like you bought out all the chocolate frogs from the trolley. I would worry for a stomach ache if I were you."

"Nah, it's mostly for the cards." Roman sized this new student up- they seemed a bit more talkative and sociable than both him and Angelo, so they might be tiring in the long run when Roman was back to his usual introverted (and perhaps a bit grumpy) self.

The person introduced themself as Zephyrus. 'Wow, and I thought I had a rare name... interesting. Wonder what their backstory is.'

Zephyrus and Angelo began conversing, though it quickly trailed off. A silence enveloped the cabin yet again. Roman kind of wanted to know more about Zephyrus' backstory, but he didn't want to disturb the peace. He knew how annoyed he get when someone did that to him and hated to be that person. Though, after awhile, it got stifling. Roman started counting the number of trees that passed by (he was up to 987 so far). Deciding to break the silence, he opened his mouth, maybe going to ask a question about their families. But Zephyrus beat him to it.

“What houses are you hoping to get into? I don’t really care. My mom was in Ravenclaw though.”

'Ah dear, not this again...'

"I guess I'm hoping to get into Slytherin. Though it's kind of moot, because I will, inescapably. My whole family are Slytherins and have been forever. I wouldn't care if it weren't for them, but, well... they're there. So I guess I do."

Angelo rose his head from the pane of the window when Zephryus brought up houses again. Frankly, he really didn't mind whatever house fate had in store for him— they all seemed decent, but by the process of elimination, he was sure Gryffindor was off the list. Oh, and definitely not Slytherin, his head would get bitten off for being a half-blood (or at least, that's what he believed). He really was considering Slytherin earlier, but after he thought about the rumours he heard on the platform, Slytherin was definitely the worst case scenario.

After Roman had voiced his thoughts, Angelo responded as well. "Houses..." he murmured in thought. "In all honesty, I don't really know all about the houses and their ideals, but based off what I've heard here and there... I think Ravenclaw sounds neat," he answered. Being valued for academic integrity sounded like something neat to him— until he realised it was magical academic integrity, not being good at long division or something. He knew nothing about magic! He was curious, yes, but whenever he tried to ask his dad about it, he would refrain from speaking or admit he was equally as clueless as him when it came to the Wizarding World.

"No, wait..." he thought out loud, brows furrowing. Maybe Ravenclaw didn't sound neat to him after all— there was no chance he would ever be smart at magic when all odds were against him; other first years have probably read their textbooks religiously while he hasn't even opened a single one yet. And Gryffindor and Slytherin were off the list— he was not brave or daring, so he wouldn't fit in Gryffindor, and Slytherin sounded dangerous to him. So what was left? He knew there were four houses, but Angelo swore he never heard that last house be mentioned in conversations. Uh... Rufflebuff? No... Hufflefluff? Jeez, why can't I remember this house? Oh, right, it was Hufflepuff!

"Maybe... Maybe Hufflepuff?" He corrected, his tone uncertain. He didn't know much about Hufflepuff, especially considering his lack of knowledge for the houses altogether, but considering he probably wouldn't even survive the full seven years at Hogwarts if he were in different houses, it seemed the most fitting for him.

Zephryus listened to Roman with mild curiosity. ‘So he was a purebred then?’ They furrowed my nose at the thought of the kind of pressure he must be under. “If I was under that kind of pressure.. I think you should want because you want to. Not because of your family.”

Their head turned towards Angelo as he talk about his own preferences. "Houses...In all honesty, I don't really know all about the houses and their ideals, but based off what I've heard here and there... I think Ravenclaw sounds neat,"

They nodded their head seldomly. Makes sense. Ravenclaw were basically the ‘smart’ house. A lot of people wanted to be in Ravenclaw. Gryffindor has bravery, Slytherin has slyness, Hufflepuff has heart, and Ravenclaw has intelligence.

”Maybe … Maybe Hufflepuff?” For some reason, Zephryus could see him being a Hufflepuff. For Roman, while they kind of wanted him to be in a different house, a way to distinguish himself from his family, they could also see him in Slytherin.

“Like I said before. I don’t really care. I just.. want to be known. Ah.. why don’t we talk about something else? Roman, I was curious about your name. Coming from me, that’s rich. Why Roman?”

“If I was under that kind of pressure.. I think you should want it because you want to. Not because of your family," responded Zephyrus to what Roman said. Roman shrugged. 'It's not that simple... it's not like I can really separate what I want from what my family does. Can I?'

Angelo mentioned he might want to be in Hufflepuff. "Not a bad house," Roman started. "I mean, loyalty is a good thing. Just kind of the runt of litter. I guess that's where people assume the "extras" go, the ones that don't fit into another house. I don't think that's true but I still wouldn't want Hufflepuff, if only for the stereotypes it can bring." Maybe Roman thought a bit too much about what the general population thought of him. Whatever. He would be in Slytherin whether he wanted to or not.

Zephyrus changed the subject pretty quickly. “Like I said before. I don’t really care. I just.. want to be known. Ah.. why don’t we talk about something else? Roman, I was curious about your name. Coming from me, that’s rich. Why Roman?”

Roman was pretty used to the question. The name was getting a bit more popular nowadays, but 11 years ago it was exceedingly rare, and he usually had people think it was Ronan or Rowan.

"I'm not exactly sure. My older brothers are Ethan and Asher, so you could say they got much more normal names than I did. I assume it's because my parents wanted me to... take after the Romans, or something? They were a rather hardworking lot. My mum has Italian ancestry, so there's that too. But I never asked them. And what about you two? Angelo, your name is like... almost the exact same as your surname. And Zephyrus, well, it's not exactly something you hear every day."

While Angelo listened to Roman's thoughts about Hufflepuff, he couldn't help but agree. After all, he had trouble even remembering the house's name, but Angelo didn't dislike the idea of being in Hufflepuff. Realistically, it would probably fit him more, even if he wished he were suitable for Ravenclaw. Well, someone has to be the leftovers... and since I'm so reclusive I really should've expected that.

When Roman mentioned the whole names ordeal, Angelo smiled weakly, a rare action coming from him. "Yeah, well, both my first name and last name have the same meaning, they both mean angel. But I wouldn't know why my parents pretty much decided my namesake should come after angels twice." He fiddles with the soft hair at the base of his neck, a substitute for rubbing his neck, gaze drifting down. "I haven't really put much thought into it... but I suppose it's pretty odd?"

Angelo was pretty sure it was his mom who primarily picked his name, his mom was British so he could've gotten some other English name like Arthur or Cole. But he knew there was some backstory to his name— his dad mentioned that a lot whenever he was stuck in reverie. He recalled his father's frequent words: "when you were born, your mom said you looked like an angel... you've pretty much lived up to our family name, my boy," his dad always said with warmth, his eyes never failing to twinkle with love. The school year hadn't even started yet, and Angelo already missed his dad. He sighed quietly, his gaze remaining lowered. "Even if it is odd, I wouldn't trade my name for any other one."

He turned his head towards Zephyrus, anticipating their answer. He was already wondering where their name came from earlier, so he was looking forward to their answer. "Yeah, Zephyrus? Names with a Z are already rare enough, and I wonder what it means..."

Zephryus listened to Roman’s answer with a smile. The Romans were pioneers in their days. They wondered if this would affect Roman in a way. Would he be a hard worker too? Innovative? When he brought up Angelo’s name, they couldn’t help but agree. His first and last name were very similar. Might be confusing on a roster. Either way, both boys had very interesting names. We all did. ‘Maybe it was meant to me.’ Zephryus humored themself.

Zephryus turned their head towards Angelo to listen to his reasoning. "Yeah, well, both my first name and last name have the same meaning, they both mean angel. But I wouldn't know why my parents pretty much decided my namesake should come after angels twice."

‘Angelic, huh?’ Their eyes glanced over him with a calculating gaze. They momentarily met his own blue eyes before darting away. Those eyes of his, were probably the most blue they had ever seen. Angelic fit him.

“I think your names fit you both well. An innovator and an angel. A very interesting duo.” Zephryus wasn’t surprised when they seemed interesting in their own name. It wasn’t something was a very deep meaning. Not really. In grade school, the other kids found it weird. Too weird for them. Zephryus was glad they found curiosity in their name rather than the latter.

“Zephryus is the impersonation of the West winds. It’s supposed to be the kindest and gentlest of the winds. My brother is named Boreas. He’s supposed to the most violent of the winds. We don’t.. really fit our names. My dad had a weird fascination in Greek lore. If you want.. you can call me Zep. If it’s easier. Since we’re friends, right?”

Angelo was the first to respond to Roman's question.

"Yeah, well, both my first name and last name have the same meaning, they both mean angel. But I wouldn't know why my parents pretty much decided my namesake should come after angels twice."

Roman pondered this. He guessed it would be like his parents naming him Burn Burnett, or Roman Romano or something. The thought made him giggle internally a bit. He had come to appreciate his name, even though it was rare. It sounded pretty cool, and it brought to mind one of the greatest empires that's ever lived. Angelo didn't exactly seem like an angel to him. He couldn't really read the boy well, though, so who really knew.

“I think your names fit you both well. An innovator and an angel. A very interesting duo," said Zephyrus.

'That's quite a romantic way of putting it. They're just names. I'll be surprised if this kid gets Slytherin... it's not exactly the most idealistic of houses.'

Zephyrus then launched into an explanation of their name. “Zephryus is the impersonation of the West winds. It’s supposed to be the kindest and gentlest of the winds. My brother is named Boreas. He’s supposed to the most violent of the winds. We don’t.. really fit our names. My dad had a weird fascination in Greek lore. If you want, you can call me Zep. If it’s easier. Since we’re friends, right?”

'Friends? Man, that was quick... I'd put us solidly in the acquaintances category, but at the rate Zephyrus thinks we're going, we're going to blood relatives by nightfall.' Roman tried not to let a slight panic arise in his throat. He wasn't good at social situations. At all. 'I mean, if Zephyrus thinks we're friends, then who am I to argue? I'm not really the expert here. But it's too fast, right? Isn't friends someone you would die for? I sure as hell wouldn't die for these two. Not yet. I dunno? Would I? GOD ROMAN STOP OVERTHINKING AND SAY SOMETHING.'

"Uhm- yeah- I mean- Zep's cool. Hi Zep."

He barely kept himself from facepalming. Oh well. He'd probably see these two about five more times in his life. Once he was off the train, he'd be okay, and could just forget this interaction ever happened.

While Angelo listened to Zephyrus talk about their name origins, he couldn't help but think that Zephyrus was at least somewhat fitting. The West wind was related to springtime, right? And their hair and eyes seemed so warm, like the sun, that he supposed that being named after the West wind wasn't too far of a stretch. But what could make their father so obsessed with Greek mythology to the point where they named their children after them?

And then Zephyrus mentioned their brother, Boreas. Boreas was associated with winter, he knew that. He started thinking about their brother and what they'd be like. Blonde hair? Maybe blue eyes like mine? Do they go to Hogwarts as well? If they do, maybe they're a Slytherin. Boreas sounds like a Slytherin.

Then, those words shocked him out of his thoughts."Since we're friends, right?" Zephryus said, alerting Angelo out of his thoughts. He looked over to Roman, who looked equally as shocked. They wanted to be friends? Usually, Angelo was the first to ask about friendship, if he even wanted to be friends with anyone at all. He wasn't repulsed by the idea at all, of course not, but he did want to know the two better if he were going to talk to them for a long time. Angelo still felt somewhat uncomfortable around the both of them, and of course, nervous as well.

"Friends?" He thought out loud, becoming quiet for a moment. "Ah... sure, I... I suppose we could be friends. If that's okay, of course," he adds politely, his former comfort disappearing in a blink of an eye. He seems to shrink back, hands meeting together to fiddle slightly. Would this friendship even last long enough to be called a proper one?

No, wait, he shouldn't disappoint Zephyrus just because he thought he wasn't good enough to be friends with them. At least there would be someone to talk to for a bit, and if Angelo was honest, he was lonely, not solitary. Bottling himself up all the time was super bad for his mental health, his father always said. Maybe this would be an opportunity for him.

"Yeah, we can be friends," he repeats, as if to reassure himself. He turns his head to look outside the window again. Still more countryside. He supposed they were around halfway through the train ride, if not three quarters done. The compartment felt awfully quiet again, the awkward tension thick enough that it could be cut with a knife. How much longer would he have to endure this train ride? He was still tired from the half-nap earlier, and he desperately wanted to go lie down by himself somewhere he could call his own and rot in bed.

While it was amusing seeing the surprise, and in Roman’s case, fumbling on their faces, both of them had seemed off put by the idea of being friends. Zep hadn’t meant to force friendship onto them. They didn’t really have many friends growing up. Actually, Boreas normally had the friends.

There was a reason why their name and their brother’s didn’t fit them. Their brother was always leveled headed. Good at keeping calm when they were in elementary school. While Zep.. was too ambitious. Jumped to conclusions. Slight emotional issues. Coming here was supposed to be good for them. Not just for school, well that was a bonus. For them to learn to control their emotions. Yet they had jumped to another false conclusion. And let their emotions overrule the reason.

“Sorry. I hadn’t meant to make either of you two uncomfortable. I’m new, to say the least, to this friends thing. I just thought that you two would be..” They paused for a moment, trying to come up with the right words. An anxious angel, a pureblood with a lot of pressure, and an emotional wind god. ‘Nice play on words, Zephryus.’ They scowled silently. “Entertaining. I thought it would be entertaining being your friend.”

Zephryus tried to diffuse the tension threatening to build up again. The boys still had this nervous, unsure expression on which just made Zep sink further into their seat. They ended up just leaving it and leaning back on the cart wall.
“We’ll be there soon anyways.”

From what it looked like, Angelo seemed to be as surprised as Roman at this remark. 'Socially awkward minds think alike, I guess...'. Well, at the very least, Zephyrus (Zep, now?) would be someone Roman could approach without feeling like he'd instantly scare them away. Though Roman felt the more they got to know him, Roman would probably scare both of them off with his inability to carry on a proper conversation (well, perhaps Angelo about tied him in that measure).

"Yeah, we can be friends," Angelo restated. It sounded like moreso like Angelo was saying this to himself rather than Zep, which Roman could relate to. He really didn't know what to think of the boy. In fact, he didn't know what to think of Zep either. He was usually fairly decent at reading people off the bat, but the two that sat in his cabin now were more difficult. Maybe Roman could only understand Muggles. Maybe magic complicated things a bit somehow.

Once Roman snapped back to the present, he realized how dreadfully silent it was. 'How long has it been like this? Why can't I just let it be today? Why do I feel the need to keep talking- I mean, see where it's gotten you.'

A few more excruciating minutes passed, where each of the three of them seemed desperately uncomfortable yet not wanting to disturb the other two or make things worse. Roman decided to make things worse. The ride couldn't be that much longer, seeing as it had probably been about two hours already.

"So!!! How long do y'all think the train ride is?"

'Y'ALL? Jesus, I'm sounding like I'm from good ol' Texas rather than bloody London.' Panic filled his throat yet again. Maybe he should've just stayed with his parents. Maybe them oppressing him was for the better seeing how he acted when he was by himself.
