The Everhart family had a tradition, that is every summer they would go on a long trip to spend time together. It was a rare time of year, when Rosaline could be with her parents as a family, so she treasured it very much.
This year, they chose Scotland as their destination because there were some friends of Julian’s and Elowen’s they wanted to visit. Plus, Scotland was beautiful. They went there using muggle transportation, not the Floo Net or a Portkey, because they wanted to enjoy more view from the train windows. They planned to sightsee Edinburgh and Glasgow. Rosaline was just having fun while they visited old friends. She would roam around in the new city or try to find a new favorite café or bookstore. She wasn’t bored at all.
This time, Elowen took Rosaline with her. They apparitioned to a majestic manor. The building stood solemn and quiet.
Rosaline was told to dress more formally that day. She hadn’t known why before, but she realized it as she was silently amazed by the manor.
She wore a long, dark green dress with some delicate lace trims, and had accessorized with her own star-shaped necklace. Her hair was braided to let her look more dignified. She wasn’t used to this kind of formal clothes, but still managed to keep herself together with quiet composure.
She recalled that Elowen had said that the reason Elowen had brought her on this visit was because the family had a girl her age.
Maybe I can be friends with her! She kept wonder what the girl would look like. After thinking of those, Rosaline’s spirit lifted a little.
“Mum, how long have you known this family?” Rosaline asked curiously.
“Since the school day. We were really close back then.” Elowen answered with a hint of sentimentality.
Rosaline noticed the past tense, but she hadn’t got the chance to ask more, the gate opened suddenly.

“Act like a lady, Victoria. Don’t disappoint me,” her mother said one last time as she adjusted the ribbon in Victoria’s wavy brown hair.
Victoria remained silent—she knew how her perfectionist mother behaved, especially when guests were coming over.
After smoothing down her dark blue dress, Victoria quietly made her way to her room and sat down by the window, watching the outside world from the chair by the glass.
Today, her mother would be hosting a childhood friend at the manor.
Victoria’s mother disapproved of her friend marrying a Muggle and had never missed a chance to make her opinion known to Victoria.
“If her daughter shows you anything related to Muggles, stay away.”
Victoria sighed, resting her cheek in her palm. She personally had no issue with Muggles—during her first year, she had met plenty of half-bloods and Muggle-born students, and they had all been very sweet. Still, she could recall the determination and harshness in her mother’s eyes.
This would be the first time a Muggle ever stepped foot in their house.
Speaking of daughters—Victoria had heard from her mother that the girl would be starting at Hogwarts this year, which meant she was a year younger than her.
The thought made Victoria smile slightly. For the first time, she might become friends with someone younger than her.
Well—hopefully they’d become friends.
When Victoria saw the family arriving in front of the house, she leaned in closer to the window, her blue eyes observing the girl.
The girl’s soft-looking, dark brown hair fell to her shoulders. Her blue eyes were sharp, yet curious.
Victoria smiled to herself, the dimple on her right cheek showing.
The girl looked sweet and lovely in her green dress.
Her mother’s voice calling out to her snapped Victoria back to reality.
She quickly adjusted her pearl earrings and the folds of her dark blue dress, then headed down the stairs and toward the front door.
Her blue eyes were cold and distant as she calmly stood beside her mother.
A Visit From the Past
Rosaline and her mother went into the house. An elegant woman and a girl with blue doe eyes already waited in the foyer. The girl seemed around her age, perhaps a little older. They greeted each other courteously. Elowen was polite but distant. Rosaline wasn’t used to seeing her mum like this, but she kept her smile, trying to be nice and cute. Elowen introduced Rosaline to the girl. Rosaline reached out her hand and said beamingly, “Hi, my name is Rosaline.”
They were led to the living room. The interior was just like she saw outside, refined and sophisticated. She didn’t feel too much pressure in the room, because it was kind of like her grandparents’ house. They sat down, and Rosaline adjusted her skirt, making it neater. Elowen and the woman started talking. Rosaline didn’t think this would be a relaxed or catching-up conversation, but under the frostiness of their tones, she could still sense something warm and nostalgic.
Rosaline quietly sat there, drifting her gaze. She started observing the girl. The ribbon on the girl’s wavy hair made her look like a doll. Rosaline liked her dress. The girl seemed to be a little distance away. Rosaline tried to smile at her, hoping the girl would catch the smile.
She heard a sharp clink as the teacup was put on the table. The sound brought her back from her daydreaming. Elowen and the woman’s conversation got heated. Rosaline hadn’t figured out what happened. She was on her head then. She just captured some sentences that contained “Muggle” and “Mixed marriage.”

Victoria froze for a few seconds when the girl took her hand and introduced herself — she hadn’t expected any physical contact. Still, she gently shook the girl's hand and murmured, “I’m Victoria. Victoria Blythe.”
By the time Victoria joined the others in the sitting room, she already knew the atmosphere was about to become tense. She calmly leaned back in her seat, waiting for the inevitable heated argument between her mother and Rosaline’s mother to begin. It didn’t bother her—she was used to conflict.
What she wasn’t used to, and certainly hadn’t expected, was the girl suddenly turning to her and smiling. After a brief hesitation, instead of smiling back, Victoria abruptly stood up and gently took the girl's wrist, leading her out of the room and toward her own chambers. She doubted anyone would notice their absence amid the rising tension between the two women.
Once inside, she closed the door behind them and turned to face the girl. Her gaze was distant yet kind and polite.
“…Sorry. I figured you wouldn’t want to be caught in the middle of that,” she murmured, releasing the girl’s wrist before settling into the armchair by the window. She motioned to the one across from her. “...Why don’t you sit? I should have some snacks around here somewhere,” she added, standing once more and heading to the wardrobe. She retrieved a few wizarding treats hidden behind her clothes and returned to place them on the small table between them.

As the tension between the two women grew, Rosaline heard some unkind words about Muggles. She had been protected very well. Elowen had shielded her from those who weren’t that kind to Muggles. She had always known that there were still some wizards who had prejudice, but she wasn’t expecting this on that day. An uneasy expression appeared on her face.
The words felt like a bee sting to her heart.
She hadn’t had time to think through what happened exactly. Victoria came toward her, softly took her wrist, and led her out of the room. Rosaline was bewildered. She really wasn’t used to conflicts. Even just watching other people argue, she would still get hard feelings if anyone she loved and cared about was getting hurt.
She just followed Victoria.
Getting into a chamber, Victoria apologized to her, Rosaline gave her a weak smile, “No, I’m the one who should thank you for pulling me out of that. I can’t stand the atmosphere there.” Rosaline added uncertainly, “But Mom said they knew each other for a long time. I just don’t understand why people fight……” She looked a little frustrated, like a wilted flower.
Rosaline sat on a comfortable armchair, the coziness made her feel better. “Oh, thank you for the snacks!” she said, grabbing a Chocolate Frog. The sweetness allowed her to regain some energy again. She looked around and felt curious about this chamber. Rosaline tried to start some conversations, “Is this your bedroom? I think it’s really pretty.”
A Visit From the Past

How could she possibly explain her family’s views? How could she put into words the awful, narrow-minded things they believed about Muggles without sounding like she agreed with even a fraction of it?
“…Some… pure-blood families don’t really see Muggles in a very kind light,” she said slowly, her voice quiet and measured.
She was choosing each word with caution, like tiptoeing across thin ice. One wrong step and it could all fall apart. The last thing she wanted was to upset this girl — someone who had walked into her home, into her space, likely already feeling out of place.
Victoria didn’t want to make it worse.
There was a short pause. Then she moved to sit down across from the girl, the chocolate packet in her hand crinkling slightly as she opened it. She unwrapped a piece and popped it into her mouth, then offered the rest with a small, polite gesture.
“…Ah… yes. My room,” she said after swallowing, her tone softening just slightly. “I’m glad you like it.”
It was one of the few places in the house that truly felt like hers. After a long and tiring argument — full of eye rolls and dismissive remarks from her parents — she’d finally been allowed to decorate it the way she wanted. The walls were painted a rich, calming navy blue, a few delicate vines and flowers traced along the edges like quiet whispers of softness. Paintings of the sea hung in gold or wooden frames, some calm, some stormy — but all full of movement and depth.
The faint scent of vanilla and sea breeze drifted through the room, subtle but comforting. It reminded her of freedom, of places she hadn’t yet been to but longed to see one day. Places far away from judgment, expectations, and hushed, hateful opinions whispered behind closed doors.
“…Sorry again about what happened downstairs,” Victoria murmured suddenly, as if the words had been waiting to be said. She lowered her head slightly, a small frown tugging at her lips. “They’re… difficult."
There was a small silence between them. Not cold — not yet — but hovering awkwardly like something unspoken still sat between them.
Victoria shifted slightly in her seat, smoothing the edge of her skirt as if the fabric could calm her nerves. Then, hoping to change the subject and lift the tension in the air, she looked up again and asked gently,
“…Are you starting at Hogwarts this year?”

Rosaline sat on the armchair and tried to pull a strand of her hair behind her ear, only to realize it had been tightly braided. She wasn’t used to it. Rosaline felt a bit stiff in this unfamiliar place. Luckily, she still had Victoria as a companion. Victoria gave off a feeling that made Rosaline calm, and Rosaline didn’t feel that much pressure around her.
Rosaline hadn’t expected Victoria to respond to her question. It had almost felt like a problem that only existed in her head. She was surprised. Rosaline had known that the stigma toward Muggles still existed, but she just couldn’t face it when it appeared so abruptly.
She felt relieved and grateful as Victoria explained things in the most thoughtful way possible. She knew the girl didn’t share her mother’s views and was trying to console her. Rosaline’s stiff posture eased, though she still maintained a polite sitting position.
“Thank you for saying that. I was worried you might think of me that way, too. But you don’t. That’s what matters to me,” Rosaline said with a relaxed expression. She paused for a moment and added, “Not that I think your mum’s thoughts are bad. I know everyone has their own opinions on things. Like, I don’t like those liquorice candies at all.” She made a small joke to lighten up the mood. Rosaline didn’t want to let Victoria think she disliked her mum.
Victoria offered Rosaline a piece of chocolate. As she leaned forward to take it, her phone fell out of the tiny pocket of her dress. She had brought it along because she thought that day she might be bored, as her mom would be busy catching up with an old friend. But things hadn’t gone the way she expected. She had even brought the little wired headphones, in case she wanted to listen to some music. “Ah, thank you for the chocolate! I like chocolate.” She bent down to pick up the phone, "Sorry, I’m a little clumsy.” She placed the phone on the table between them so it wouldn’t fall again.
When Victoria said it was her room, Rosaline knew why she had that feeling as she went into it. She could see that the room wasn’t quite like the other place she had seen in the Blythe Manor. It was more welcoming and warmer, and it carried Victoria’s elegant vibe.
She heard Victoria apologize again. She responded with an apologetic smile, “No, it was my fault for acting that way earlier. I should be more mature.” She lowered her gaze, “I know everyone has different thoughts and beliefs, it’s natural.” She added, “If everyone thought the same, it’d be a pretty boring world to live in.” She gave Victoria a slight smile.
Rosaline noticed that Victoria might be as nervous as she was. When she heard the question about Hogwarts, her eyes lit up. “Oh yes, I’m going to be a first-year this September.” Rosaline gazed at Victoria curiously, “What about you? I guess you’ve already been to Hogwarts.”

Blythe girl pushed the window open, hoping to sweep away the lingering tension that clung to the room like a heavy curtain. A soft breeze drifted in, curling around the furniture and brushing against Victoria’s skin. She hadn’t realized how tight her chest had felt until that very moment—just a whisper of wind, and already she could breathe easier.
She stole a glance at Rosaline, who had just spoken with such gentle courtesy that Victoria had to fight not to smile. Her lips trembled slightly with the effort, but she managed to hold it in. It wasn’t that she disliked the girl—on the contrary, Victoria had no ill feelings toward her. And yet… there was something about Rosaline that caught her off guard.
So when Rosaline casually mentioned that she didn’t like liquorice candies, Victoria’s composure cracked. Her eyes widened, just barely, but enough to betray her surprise.
“Oh… I didn’t know,” she murmured softly, her tone apologetic. “I’m sorry.”
Rosaline accepted the chocolate Victoria offered in its place, her slender fingers curling around the sweet. But as she moved, something slipped from her pocket—a small, unfamiliar object that clattered softly onto the floor.
Victoria’s sharp blue eyes caught it instantly. What was that?
Curiosity unfurled within her like a restless flame. When Rosaline, oblivious to the scrutiny, set the object down on the table, Victoria found herself utterly transfixed. She barely registered the girl’s quiet “thank you” for the chocolate; her gaze was locked on the strange little device, a thing she had never seen before.
When Rosaline spoke again, it was an apology—pulling Victoria back into the moment like a tug on an anchor.
Why is she apologizing? Victoria wondered briefly, before realizing. Ah—of course. For dropping it.
“It’s all right,” Victoria said gently, her voice laced with warmth. She hesitated for only a second before curiosity overcame her restraint. “Not a problem at all, but… may I ask what this is?”
The question left her lips soft as velvet, though her eyes betrayed the keen spark of interest that had taken root there. For someone who had grown up in the strict traditions of a pure-blood family, Victoria’s fascination with Muggle inventions was… considerable. Forbidden curiosities always burned the brightest, after all.
When Rosaline’s words shifted to something else—something about maturity, Victoria tilted her head slightly, blue eyes gleaming as they found Rosaline’s once more. “Hm?” Her voice was low, almost coaxing. “No… I don’t think it has anything to do with that. If you ask me, you seem perfectly mature—more so than most, actually. Please, don’t feel bad.”
The faintest of smiles tugged at her lips now, unbidden but gentle.
When Rosaline corrected that she’d be starting at Hogwarts this year, Victoria felt her heart lift in understanding. Ah. That explained the spark of anticipation in her tone, the way her eyes shone.
Victoria nodded, the movement slow and elegant, as if she were measuring her words. “I see… you must be excited,” she said softly. “I’m going into my second year.” Her voice carried a trace of pride, though tempered with warmth.
Her head tilted ever so slightly as she asked, “Which house do you hope for?”
Hufflepuff, perhaps? The thought flickered through Victoria’s mind, but instinct whispered otherwise. There was something bold, quietly fierce, about Rosaline—a spark that reminded Victoria far too much of crimson and gold.
Gryffindor, she thought. She would fit there well.

The coolness swept through the room, making Rosaline’s heart lighten. Her hair blew in the breeze, and she raised her hand to smooth it down.
She sat on the armchair, gently eating the chocolate Victoria just handed to her. She took a small bite of it, its sweetness melting and spreading across her palate. When it came to snacks, she always liked some chocolate and sweets. She observed Victoria’s expression, and the girl seemed more relaxed after breathing the fresh air. In the brief moment of their meeting, she had already liked Victoria a lot. She was composed and elegant; the kind of girl Rosaline wished to become someday, less careless and more thoughtful.
Rosaline noticed Victoria’s gaze shift to the phone she had just dropped. She realized that Victoria was a pureblood, so she might not be familiar with it. She was right because Victoria soon asked about the phone. “Oh, sorry, I forgot you might not have seen it before. It’s a Muggle device. We call it a cellphone in Muggle world. You can use it to talk to people who aren’t nearby. And it can browse the Internet. Hmm… How should I put it? It’s like a magical little pad that you can ask any question and get answers.” Rosaline tried her best to describe it, her brows knitted. She picked up the phone and tapped it, wanting to show the screen to Victoria. But the phone seemed dead, all black, and didn’t respond. She remembered now that Muggle devices couldn’t be used in magical places. She flushed a rosy pink, thinking about how she forgot things like this. “I forgot that the Muggle devices cannot be used in magical places,” Rosaline said, a little down. “If we have a chance to meet outside, I can show you then!” Putting it back on the table, she thought of something, “If you’d like to take a look at it, you can.” She handed it to Victoria. The phone was cold to the touch.
She responded to Victoria’s answer with, “How do you feel about your first year? Yes, I’m really excited now. I’ve been waiting for it for so long. And I can’t wait to meet other students. I’m glad I can meet you today, too.” Rosaline grinned widely, bright and cheerful. She answered Victoria’s next question hesitantly, “I’m not quite sure. I think I got a bit of every trait from the four houses. And my family members are all Ravenclaw and Slytherin, so maybe one of them?” She mused and remained silent for a moment. Then she asked gently, “What’s your house?” Victoria made her think of something elegant, with compassion underneath. She guessed Victoria might be Slytherin.
