Romantic Flop
Preston was wandering around awkwardly, he felt rather bored and he had some spare time before dinner would be served. As he meandered around the doorways and archaic structures, he lazily kicked a pebble around with his feet.
“Stupid school,” he grumbled to himself as he walked past a few students. Nobody had wanted to befriend him yet, and he hadn’t the thought to go out of his way to befriend anybody himself. He felt that most of the other people around him weren’t worth his time, so he brought misery upon himself for the most part. This didn’t stop him from thinking that this was their fault though. Further adding to his misery as he continued his walk. When he found a larger stone, he traded it for the pebble and began to kick with more force. Angry at others, and taking it out on the poor rock.
After finishing his small angry spurt he took a left past a clique of Ravenclaws and squinted his eyes at them sharply. Losers, he thought to himself with a huff as he walked past them. The group of Ravenclaws watched him with interest. He wondered if they found him attractive, and took a glance back at them only to see that they were pointing and laughing now. He wrinkled his lip and rolled his eyes. He should’ve expected as much from a lot like them anyway.
That’s when he saw her. A flawless girl, her brown hair pulled into a thick French braid, and her curious yet mischievous hazel eyes seemed to be reaching into everyone around her as she silently observed the area every few steps or so. Her entire demeanor made Preston lift his head and straighten his tie, as he walked over to her confidently. This girl was not only beautiful, but she looked rather smart and Preston most certainly liked this about her.
Once he managed to slide up next to her he cleared his throat and raised his posture, so that he looked like a younger military Sargent, he smoothed his brown hair back and smiled coyly, his eyes staring at her with playful interest.
“Ello’ you canny lass,” he spoke, thinking it utmost fair to greet her as such.

~ * ~Ruby blinked as her eyes slowly adjusted to the bright daylight of the outdoors. She had some spare time and she had just finished reading a book, so she decided to come out here, which she found herself doing a lot. She had to occasionally take breaks from her studies, even if it was just to live a little and enjoy nature. What would her cousins think if she became boring and never did anything? They wouldn't be pleased, and would probably tease her about how they taught her to be better than that, to live her life and cause some mischief along the way.
What had she really been doing in the start of her second year? Her anger and jealousy seemed to be getting stronger, and she was mildly aware of it. All because of my stupid brother, she thought as she kicked a small pebble in frustration. She felt more alone than she had in a long time. Sure, she had made some good friends—maybe even best friends, and they were wonderful. Yet something felt like it was missing. Was it a lack of real love from her parents and animosity towards her sibling that was getting in her way? Most likely. It made her all the more determined to make her own way, to set her ambitions in stone and then fulfil them, making them into reality. She would utilise her cold hatred to her advantage, letting it fuel her to some degree and help with her determination.
She was glad, at least, to have the ability to come out here and to connect with nature, even if it was just for a short while. There were plenty of other students around, but she wouldn't bother them and in turn they would leave her alone. Perhaps it was the badge of authority that scared them away, showing that she was a prefect. It could also be her cold demeanour, and the way she seemed to know too much, how she saw through everything. Her aura could certainly be an intimidating one when she had no will to soften it—when she wanted, she could seem open and appealing, likeable and trustworthy.
She was currently closed off, with no desire to interact with anyone. She had considered bringing her notebooks or sketchbooks out with her, but had eventually settled for just people-watching. Her gaze darted around every now and then as she observed it all and internalised it, analysing it piece by piece. Little things, habits, and behaviours could speak volumes about a person. She took notice of each individual, interested in every one of them, even if only for a fleeting moment.
Her reverie as she observed them was suddenly broken by the sound of footsteps nearing her. She turned her stare onto the newcomer, a young male. He seemed… cocky. She couldn't yet tell if it was a good or a bad thing, but she regarded him neutrally as he began speaking. She raised an eyebrow. “Hello, is there something that you need help with?” He was still young, likely a first year, and she was wary of the mischievous playfulness in his eyes. She could play along, or she could shut him down quickly and efficiently before things got out of hand. She would leave it at that for now to hear his response and make a judgement afterwards.~ * ~

Romantic Flop
Preston had been walking slowly next to Ruby, awaiting the moment when she would finally fully notice him. And when she finally said, "Hello, is there something you need help with?" Preston grinned, a sly grin of course, but enough to show that he took great pleasure in her acknowledgement.
Finally she acknowledges my existence, usually it doesn’t take a girl this long. Preston thought as he looked up at her, his wide beam fading slowly into a smirk. He began to plot out how the rest of this conversation should go, so he walked in silence for a few moments before making his final decision. It was going to be tough to convince her, or at least he assumed it was going to be tough. She was rather coy looking, and that was one of the few reasons Preston had decided to talk to her.
Preparing himself emotionally and physically, Preston began putting his plan into immediate action. Preston contorted his face into a serious one, his eyes relaxed and his grin turned into a frown. "Thanks for asking!" To further his performance he began panting heavily, as if he had just run a long distance. Preston thought this was a good idea, but in reality the panting was excessive and appeared goofy. Almost as if the boy was having an asthma attack from his slow walking. "Do you mind holding something for me," he asked pausing for a moment before continuing. "I’ve had a really long day, so your help would be much appreciated." He tried to hold back from laughing, he was rather proud of himself, he started to consider this one of his best passes yet.
He bit his tongue and waited patiently for the girl's reply.
