Rose missed a lot of things over the summer break. She would, of course, miss her friends, going from seeing them around all the time to written correspondence and planned hangouts. She would miss learning and going to class, and the structure of schedule. The castle also just had an... air to it. It felt more magical than any place Rose had been before. She would miss the expansive grounds and the Quidditch games and the library.

But one of the things Rose missed most when she was away from Hogwarts was spellcasting.

"Expelliarmus!" In a flash of red light, the dummy across the dueling stage was hit by what would be a fairly effective disarming charm (if only it was... armed).

This summer, she would turn seventeen, meaning she could legally use her wand outside of Hogwarts. But this still did mean that she would have to spend a month without using magic, and Rose was determined to use the time she had left while allowed to cast spells to her advantage.

"Confundo!" she said, the spell shooting towards the dummy and just nicking it on its shoulder. This one was a little harder- a more recently learned spell, and Rose gathered her focus. "Confundo," she murmured, and the spell hit the dummy square in the chest. Better.

The redhead didn't know what it was- maybe the fast flicks of her wrist, maybe the practiced incantations, or maybe just the satisfaction of being good at something- that made her enjoy casting spells so much. And though she did miss the adrenaline of dueling, too, it was mostly the smaller comforts that Rose found herself missing. Like the little light of Lumos or the convenience of the levitation spell. Cleaning charms and mending charms. Getting her siblings with the tickling charm when they were being too annoying. Watching her beautiful equine patronus gallop around after a particularly hard day. And, honestly, a good blasting curse at something that couldn't be hurt by her was exactly what she needed to cool off some days.

"Confringo," she said. Bang. A shiver of satisfaction melted over her skin as the dummy was pushed back. It felt a little weird to admit to herself, but that curse was growing on her. It was incredibly useful in dueling and packed quite a punch, and though Rose would probably deny that she liked it so much if asked, the part of her that did was probably the Gryffindor in her.

As the girl used her free time to practice her spells and enjoy her last few days of casting them, she soon would not be alone in the dueling room any more.

She hadn't been in the duelling room for quite some time. Being a part of her house's duelling club had really pushed her to spend her time here. And now that she wasn't involved with the competitive spellcasters anymore, well... her time was spent elsewhere. As she stepped into the room however, she was assaulted with memories, both fond and not so fond. Winning her first duel basically alone. Standing on the piste dodging and firing spell after spell. Beatrice could taste the adrenaline on her tongue as the memories washed over her.

She smiled fondly as she looked around. It was mostly unhabituated, with many of the students favouring the outdoors or time with friends. Beatrice didn't want that right now. What she did want was a good flick of her wand and a lick of heat and flame as she watched one of the dummy's go up in flames.

Walking over to where the dummies were situated, she looked on as another, older girl flicked a neat curse from her wand, and hit the dummy square in the chest. She nodded appreciatively, tapping her wand against her crossed arm. "Nice spell!" Admittedly she hadn't paid much attention when the older year had been duelling as she had been in the junior league at the time. As she watched the older girl do cast her spell, Beatrice could feel the rush of adrenaline sink into her blood, making her fidgety. Stepping up to the casting area, she flicked her wand in the correct movement, chanting the incantation as she did so. "Incendio!" The young girl watched with satisfaction as the dummy did indeed burst into flames. Turning towards the other girl, she held out her free hand. "I'm Beatrice by the way. I don't think we've met."

Rose jumped slightly at a voice, but smiled soon after. "Thank you," she said, still a little surprised. "Sorry, I didn't hear you come in."

Some might say the two looked alike- the red hair, the freckles- but the girl did look at least a little younger than Rose, and she recognized most Gryffindors and students in her year. The girl stepped next to Rose, pointed her wand at the dummy, and cast a sick fire-making spell at it, causing the dummy to burst into flames. This girl's wand was certainly not one that Rose ever wanted to meet on a dueling stage. Though Rose had to say she hadn't seen her duel before, there was a certain confidence in her that made Rose think she was a duelist. The stance, the lack of hesitation, the well-placed aim, and the familiar look of satisfaction on her freckled face as she hit the dummy.

Then, she introduced herself. Beatrice. The Gryffindor smiled, and decided she liked this girl. She just seemed so sure of herself, and so ready to make a new friend. "No, I don't think so, either," Rose responded, shaking her hand. "I'm Rose." The sixth year's gaze turned to the dummy, still aflame. "Are you a duelist?" she asked. She pointed her wand at the dummy, muttering under her breath, "Extinguo," and putting out the fire. She was sure that, knowing the pyromaniac tendencies of duelists, that the dummies wouldn't be designed to be easily hurt by a little fire, but she didn't want to take that risk. "Because that was pretty good. I wouldn't expect somebody new to dueling to have aim like that."
