Waking up at 6am to get ready for classes and breakfast by 7 only to find out breakfast went until 9, right before classes started was not the way Blaize had wanted to wake up his first day of classes. So, he didn't. Instead, the Clock Tower woke him up. 9 o' clock on the dot. Missed breakfast and disheveled. By the eighth ring of the bell, Blaize shot out of bed like a pressurized rocket. Robes haphazardly folded over the side of his bed got thrown on, while his cat darted under his bed at the quick movements and his books nestled under his arm. Flying out of the dorm room without looking back, he'd take the stairs two at a time to the Ground Floor.
Then he came to an immediate halt. The hallways were empty for once, which made getting to class easier when he wasn't struggling against the crowd or being shoved forward in the wrong direction. But before him stood a newfound problem. The moving staircase.
He truly believed this was Hogwarts' form of cruel and unusual punishment. The eerie cracking and rumbling they made before moving. The portraits laughing and chattering while judging first years like himself being clumsy or late. Or even the higher years who can find themselves snogging in this absurd place, among others he didn't want to know about. The sight of the stairs was beautiful, intricate, and a bit nauseating to look at as his empty stomach reminded him. Blowing out a nervous breath of air, he realized tried to remember where his first class was. Transfiguration was a few floors up, right?
Stepping onto the stair as it moved into place, he white-knuckled the railing as it began its transition, trying to focus on the task at hand. Getting to class. As soon as it shifted to the second-floor corridors, which were usually packed full, he hesitated. Why had he not asked for a map from the Prefect last night? Did they even have one? He should've paid more attention on the tour. And why didn't this piece of paper have any more directions on it? The boy kept walking, making his way to the next set of stairs he assumed led upwards. If at one point he got too high up, then he knew it was too far and could work his way down. Although he preferred not aimlessly wandering the moving staircase and corridors for the next hour and a half.
A groan escaped him. Not of annoyance but as he physically smacked into something. His textbook tumbled from his hands as he splayed his limbs outwards to avoid crashing into the floor and dirtying his robes.
"Oh for Merlin's sake!"

Tilly was a well educated, mature, young girl and she liked to pride herself on her positive outlook on life. Right now was a brilliant example. She was not lost, she was just on a journey that would lead her to class, with plenty of wonderful life experiences on the way, although it would not be in time for the bell. Or at this rate, it might not even be in time for class at all. Last night, she had been pretty confident in her ability to navigate the castles many corridors (or at the very least the ones that lead from the great hall to her dorm). Today however, even that was beyond her. The castle seemed as unfamiliar as well... a magical castle. It was her second time getting lost today. The first had been on the way to breakfast, when she had stopped to look out the window for only a minute (It was hard not to, there were people already flying outside. Flying! On brooms!). In less than a minute, all the other first years had disappeared.
Running over to the railing, she could see that they hadn't disappeared. They had just... teleported? Flew? Over to the floor below on the other side. There was no way that they could have gotten over there otherwise. The only staircase lead upwards, which was odd because she could've sworn it wasn't there before. Oh well, maybe she needed to pay better attention. One long way round later, she arrived five minutes before breakfast was over and ate her plate of eggs and toast faster than she ever had in her life. Now well and truly lost without any idea of where she was going, she decided to just follow the crowd of people roughly her own height. Until she stopped once again, this time to answer a portrait who called her hair "a birds nest left undisturbed for centuries with small animals rotting in it". Rude. It wasn't that bad. Right? She had put a lot of effort into brushing it this morning.
More importantly though, the crowd she had been following was now way up ahead. Running to catch up, she took the stairs two at a time. Until a rumbling stopped her in her tracks. She clung tightly to the railing as the stairs she was on began to move beneath her feet. This... would explain a lot actually. Standing still as the stairs began their rotation, she cursed her own lack of preparedness. Being late to your first ever class was not a good look. What if they sent her home? What would she tell her mum? Deep breaths. Everything would be fine. All she needed to do was find another student, who would surely be able to help her out. Or a teacher. It was the first day of classes, they would have to be understanding. Running to get off the staircase the minute it stopped just in case it started moving again, she came to a stop in the corridor.
Just as she was beginning to wonder if it was worth risking another interaction with a portrait, she saw a blur of ginger heading her way. She opened her mouth to say hello and ask for some directions maybe, but he didn't stop. Utterly unprepared for being ran (or rather walked) into by a random boy, she tumbled to the floor in an undignified heap. Immediately brushing herself off and standing up again (the only thing hurt here was her ego) she surveyed the rude individual in front of her. He was roughly her age, with the same ginger hair that had served as a rather late warning sign earlier. She put her hands on her hips and scowled."What was that about?" she said "Did no one ever teach you that running into people while they are trying to get to class is really rude?".

Blaize quickly snatched his book that was sprawled on the ground, the sharp voice passing through one ear and out the other. A deep scowl was plastered on his face as he brushed his disheveled locks out of his face. Finally, his gaze snapped to the person of which the voice belonged. His silent observation of her took all but 5 seconds. Blonde, somewhat frazzled and clearly inept as the collision has caused her to sprawl to the floor. He gave her credit, her quick turn around and sharp attitude took him off guard momentarily.
"I was cursing Merlin not.. you. I did not have a problem with you until you raised your voice at me. Rather, it was these damned stairs." The boy's colorful language and somewhat of an annoyed explanation stumbled from his mouth. A reminder of what his mother said flashed in his mind. Treat everyone on an equal playing field, if not better even if their intentions or behavior is sour. Regaining his composure and shifting the book in his arms, he'd audibly exhale, gaze travelling to the girl. She had said she was on her way to class. Her hair was a mess, barely brushed by the looks of it. And where were her materials? Was it possible someone was even more air-headed than him in this school. Highly likely, actually. A smirk fell on his lips. "What class are you going to anyways? Do you plan on failing it already by being late AND not having a textbook?" All common sense of what his mother had said was now out the window, his ego taking over as he found himself in control of the situation.
It seemed the motion sickness he had faced previously was an afterthought, instead a distraction lay in front of him in the form of a somewhat irritating girl. Although, most girls were irritating. His gaze clouded as he disassociated in the moment, trying to figure out if it was worth getting his ear chewed out for missing the first day of class. Alas, no one would know and lying was fairly easy. With his newfound... problem involving fast moving scenery, and not knowing where to go to get help, the excuse wasn't all that fake. But the lenience of a professor would only last so long, and his parents could only stay in the dark about his grade for so long.
"Look, let's put our differences aside and our heads together, not literally this time, and get to class, yeah? We are already late, and I don't think I can face these horrendous stairs alone." A small shudder escaped him before he rolled his shoulders back, adjusting his posture as he feigned his bravery in the face of danger. The stairs were a worthy opponent for him and his newfound... squire to face. But would she continue with her attitude or take the deal? He raised a brow, waiting for her response, expecting her to either bite her tongue and listen or put up more of a fight and make the situation worse for the both of them. Hopefully her incompetence wouldn't rear its ugly head in a dire time and go with the second option.

Ginger boy had a lot of nerve, to be frowning at her after he knocked her over. "Who's Merlin?" she asked, looking behind the boy for his mystery friend. Unable to spot another soul, she turned back to him. She relaxed as he apologized, only to panic once again when she heard his remark about a textbook. Oh no. Her textbook. It was probably still lying at the bottom of her trunk back in the dorms. What was she going to do? If she had been a bit less worried about her complete failure of a first day, she might've snapped at the boy to wipe the smirk off his face. As it was, she had bigger problems than a rude ginger. She had to find out his name, she couldn't keep calling him rude ginger. It was well... rude. "I forgot it" she said, panicked "You don't think they really will fail me, do you?". The teachers would have to be understanding on the first day, right? She couldn't be the first new student to get lost. Finding comfort in her originality, she straightened up a bit.
"I think that would be a good idea" she responded "My name is Ottilie, but everyone calls me Tilly". She very much agreed with the no more stairs comment. Hopefully they turned those off after day one. Why did they even have them on in the first place? What this all a test for new students? If it was, she was most definitely failing it by managing to wind up lost in a random corridor. Anyone who set tests like that was almost defiantly a horrible person who's opinion wasn't worth worrying about anyway. Besides, she would certainly have a story to tell to her new dormmates tomorrow. Or to the teacher if they asked any questions. Before she could think about that though, she had to actually make it to class. Luckily though, she was no longer alone. "I'm trying to get to..." she attempted to pronounce the unfamiliar word "trans... figure... ation".
She almost wished they'd started the day off with maths, because as much as she hated it at least she knew what it was. This "transfiguration" however, was a mystery to her. Probably something to do with magic. It was a magic school after all. The rude portraits and moving staircases had made that very clear. She debated asking the boy what it was. Looking stupid on her first day wasn't something she wanted to do, but she was curious. Maybe it had something to do with transformers, although she didn't think so. Somehow the thought of car robots was to strange, even among all the strangeness that was already there. "Do you know what that is? Transfiguration I mean?" she asked. She had decided that she didn't particularly care about the option of rude ginger.

The girl was quite peculiar, he had to give her that. Not knowing who Merlin was isn't out of the blue. Not many people knew of far back wizarding world history much less enjoyed it, so he couldn't particularly tell if she was a muggle or not yet. Although, it didn't seem to be as important to him figuring her all out in their interaction as it did the two boys on the train. Although she was quite amusing. Having gone from being slightly frazzled, to pure panic and the blood draining out of her face at the mention of the textbook. He would have doubled over and laughed had he not sensed the genuine concern in her voice. Exhaling, he wiped his bangs back from his face. Her panic reminded him of Kahira's, his younger sister and the few times he taken his jokes too far.
"Breathe, they won't fail you I was kidding. Well not in the first week or so at least. I think the classes are really heavy homework and test based not attendance, but uh you can't really pass classes without attending them I suppose." He scratched the back of his neck somewhat awkwardly now blabbing to try to re-trace his steps. Blaize had to knock it off, as he wasn't a know-it-all, but the air he exuded could certainly come off that way and rub people the wrong way. The boy was quite surprised as the girl accepted his offer, putting newfound courage in him. She even offered her name, it seemed they were getting off on a better foot this time.
"Transfiguration? That's on the fifth floor and we are on the second, and that's where I'm headed too. I know that much." His gaze shifted to the rumbling stairs, holding his position until they were set in stone (hah) and reached out to grab the girl's forearm, giving a small tug. Whether it was him who needed the support on the stairs or his attempt to not get them both lost, he kept his grip on her, willing his gaze shut as he felt the ground move beneath him once more. As they got to solid ground again, he quickly pulled them both off only to be hit with a question. His gaze fluttered open.
"Oh my dad said it's kind of like Charms but you turn something into something else, like changing its appearance. Where the Transfigure part of the name comes in, I suppose." The boy wasn't dull, that was for sure. He had not yet peaked at the book, mainly because with it being the size of his torso, it was quite daunting, and he opted to enjoy the rest of his summer after he picked up his haul of things in Diagon Alley before the school year started.
Collecting his erratic beating hearts with a few gulps of air, he pulled them onto another set of stairs, white-knuckle the railing as he kept his gaze zoned out elsewhere so he didn't focus on the colors and portraits hanging on the walls zipping past them, granted they were moving quite slow. "..Blaize Valerian. Slytherin first year." He wheezed out his own introduction just as his stomach lurched again, and gestured to his robes.

Maybe it was a good thing that she had bumped into (or rather been bumped into by, it was entirely his fault) the boy, because he seemed to know a lot about classes here. She had done her absolute best to soak up everything that had been said at the feast and by the prefects, but there was just so much to learn. "Thanks" she said in reply "Although I wasn't really that worried". A big fat lie, but she wasn't about to admit to stressing about school of all things in front of another kid. Tilly worked hard in class (at least anything that wasn't math) but she was most certainly not a nerd. Nerd or not though, none of it was going to matter unless they could get to class. She had heard horrible stories about boarding school detentions. Some kid from her muggle school had said they made children scrub the toilet floors with their faces, although there was no way that could be true. More possibly though, they might have to scrub toilets the normal way. And no way was she doing any cleaning now that she didn't have to.
She reacted to surprise when he grabbed her arm, although he most certainly didn't have to pull her. She didn't want to be on this staircase for a second longer than she had to either. It was quite possibly the worst evil she had ever seen in her life. If she got to have one miracle, it would be the stairs breaking down into dust tomorrow so she never had to see them ever again. Although she would also settle for a working Google maps that could tell her how to get to class. Bringing her attention back to the problem at hand, she listened to the boy telling her about the source of all this mess. Although what he said didn't make a whole lot of sense. She didn't really know what "charms" were (unless they meant the shoe charms, which she doubted). If she ignored the first bit of his sentence though, it made a whole lot more sense. Turning something into something else. That was certainly magic all right.
"That's pretty cool" she replied. She didn't really know what practical use it could have, other than turning someones chair into a balloon before they sat down on it. If they taught that in class they would have her full attention. She fantasised about turning the stairs into elevators as she got tugged up them. Years of primary school sports had not left her unfit, but magic stairs were just weird and she was terrified they were going to start turning again while she stood on them. Her new accomplice didn't seem to be enjoying it either. Although who would? She almost said nice to meet you upon hearing his name, but then she changed her mind. It might be nice knowing him (although she hadn't completely decided yet) but it was certainly not nice getting crashed into by him. "Nice" she said while she navigated the horrible stairs. "I'm a Gryffindor" she stated, starting to breathe heavy from all the running "Although that's pretty obvious". She mimicked his gesture to her own robes.

The boy would shake his head, glad Tilly hadn't bit out a snide remark at his wheezing from the stairs knocking the air out of him as he gripped the railing until it came to a halt. Gingerly stepping off, he focused back on the few words that escaped her compared to his long-winded questions. Blaize had quirked his brow, it seemed the girl had quieted down, both nervous wise and in general. The quiet silence that hung in the air was enjoyable, yet knowing another's presence was there surprisingly didn't make his skin prickle. He'd swipe his tongue over his teeth, sucking in a breath before responding to her dismissing the worry that had previously plagued her.
"Well good, I'm glad you aren't worried about failing. A class won't determine your entire life. Although I shouldn't put my faith in fate either." He had shrugged, stuffing his hands back into the pockets of his robes as they continued on. If he had calculated the stairs correctly, that was the last of them. Now just a few corridors had to be walked through until they came to their destination. Luckily, there weren't classrooms through each door and the noise would likely pick up the closer they got so he didn't have to get in trouble for peeking into random classrooms. He turned his gaze to her robes, indeed the ruby red that adorned the tailored black gowns signified her house status. A snake and lion, where had he heard of that working out before? Never, actually. His parents would be displeased at his interaction with those outside of his own house. For all he knew the girl was a muggle, but the more time he spent at the school, and away from the grasps of his parents, the less blood status and their reign over him echoed in his skull. Shaking the thoughts from mind, he continued trekking towards their final destination, all the while silently observing her trying to figure out where she would fit into his life, even in this brief moment of interaction.
Her eyes became somewhat glossy after he explained Transfiguration, meaning her train of thought went elsewhere and it made the boy snort in amusement. "I hope you aren't dreaming about transfiguring me into a rat or anything." He joked once more, eyes twinkling mischievously. There had to be a spell for that, but he would make sure he was on the wielding side of the wand, not the subject, victim, or what have you. He was pleased to see they had somewhat bonded over disliking the stairs as they slowly came to a stop in front of a door where a booming voice echoed it. Blaize turned to look at Tilly and offered his signature smirk.
"Well, since we are late, I guess we are partners. Shall we Tilly?" Testing her name out, Blaize tilted his head to get her attention before taking a deep breath. He gestured to the door before pushing it open and holding it for her to enter behind him. He had to stride into the room first. Well, he didn't have to, but he did so anyways. Maybe it was because of his ego or maybe he had done it to protect the girl from the wandering eyes that would all snap to them at their tardiness. Not many people liked having all the attention drawn to them, it made them feel guilty, suspicious or embarrassed. In this case, due to their tardiness it might be the latter option. But for Blaize it wouldn't be the first or lasty tardy in his 7 years at this school. And he could take the heat. With a glance over his shoulder and a nonchalant nod to the Professor, he would stroll forward, locating two empty seats for them.
Well. They made it to class after all.

Due to some miracle (or more likely her new friends guidance) it seemed Tilly would arrive in time for class after all. Or at least arrive while it was still classtime. She followed him as they walked through the corridors, hands in the pockets of her new robes. "I wouldn't" she said, and then she grinned "I would pick something way worse". Although she didn't exactly have a list of animals-to-threaten-to-turn-people-into yet, she was pretty sure she could do better than just a rat. He was thinking way too small. What this castle really needed was an elephant. If whoever her new teacher turned out to be was going to teach her stuff like that, then she would most certainly never be late again. Not that she intended to be anyway. Today had been an unfortunate accident. And it wasn't even her fault. The blame was firmly on the rude portraits and flying people.
Which she was still not over by the way. There better be a flying class, or a flying club, or someone who could teach her. Because who didn't want to fly? Certainly not her. She was so desperate for it that it felt like someone had cut off her leg and it was still itchy. "Hey, did you se-" she began, but was cut off when Blaize announced that they had arrived. Someone, probably the teacher, was already talking from inside. Maybe if they were really sneaky they could avoid them noticing, but it was unlikely. Oh well. Ottilie Thompson was not afraid of no detention thank you very much. If the teacher wanted to complain, then she was going to complain right back. Rude portraits, even ruder staircases, the vaguest instructions ever given to anyone ever... It was certainly a very real and good enough reason.
She held her head high, ready to march right through the door, when Blaize strode in there first. Way to ruin her dramatic entrance. She did appreciate it though. He had done exactly what she would have done, which was take the attention (and possibly the blame) so that the other person didn't have to do it. Still, she was a little annoyed. It was her job taking care of people, and she certainly didn't need any taking care of herself. When he nodded at the teacher though, she couldn't help herself. She quietly cracked up. Not for more than a second, as she immediately attempted to convince her face to look nonchalant and unbothered. She took her seat beside the Slytherin, conscious of her lack of a bag or any kind of books. Oh well. It had certainly been an adventure, although perhaps not the type her mother had been hoping for.
