Losing oneself.
Getting lost was Grace's favourite pastime.
In the middle of nature she had no problem finding her way around, but if it came to doing so in a building... well, it was a bit of a challenge.
Several months had now passed since her arrival at Hogwarts, and she could still get lost in the long, endless corridors. What exactly was she looking for? A famous treasure? Nah.
She had to get to the Charm class. Or at least that's what she thought. Or maybe not. Honestly, who knows?
She had walked out of the common room that morning convinced she knew exactly where she was going. She had reviewed the class schedule at least five times, and had repeatedly pictured in her mind the map to reach the classroom.
But obviously, and evidently, somewhere, something had gone wrong.
Ugh, she was really lost. Like, really lost.
If someone had stopped her and asked her what she was looking for, she probably would have responded with.... A little dignity? Or at least a little clue where to go. That would have been helpful, very helpful.
Still, there she stood. Alone.
Her footsteps echoed on the floor as she ventured down a corridor that was unfamiliar to her. There was not a soul in sight. Only portraits chattering like mad amongst themselves, probably teasing her. One of them laughed out loud, while another pointed at her critically. Not nice.
Do they offer humiliation courses for students? She thought.
She kept walking, hoping to look like she knew where she was going. But she didn't. Not even close.
Why was the young witch still pretending? Survival instinct? Or was she hoping for a little help from the castle?
The book she held in her hands, clutched to her chest, was beginning to weigh a little too much. Every time she switched arms, her body screamed. Her posture? A total mess. She looked like some kind of ancient, confused statue in the midst of an existential crisis.
Knowledge weighs. Literally. She muttered.
She walked past some older students. And no, she didn't stop them for help. She didn't feel like it. They laughed. Perhaps at her? No one knew, she didn't want to know. Her ego couldn't handle a confirmation.
She stopped at the junction of two corridors, undecided where to go. Right? Left? Or go back and ask the little group for a hand? She stood there for a few moments, trying to decide what to do.
Obviously she made the correct decision.
She turned left. With confidence. Too confidently.
Wrong. Obviously.
By then she had become an expert at getting lost.
"Perfect! The halls should start calling me by name by now. Maybe give me an honorary plaque or something." She let out a loud sigh "something like: Grace, champion of wrong turns and wrong turns. The corridors know her better than she does."
Suddenly, two owls darted over her head like it was rush hour in Diagon Alley.
One of them dropped a feather beside her foot.
Cute? Symbolic? Who knows.
She laughed, a strange, hysterical, surrendered laugh.
"Yes, Grace. Nature is talking to you. Really a pity you don't speak owl."
She looked around dejectedly, surrendered at the thought of being one with the stones of the walls.
"How can I not get lost in a dense forest, but do it so easily along stone walls? I am fantastic! Really!"
Just then she heard something. A noise, footsteps? Or perhaps a shift of air, too sudden to be natural.
She froze, holding her air, like a hare that had scanned a predator in the distance.
Was there anyone else there with her?
It didn't sound like the usual crunching of the castle. It was different. Rhythmic. Maybe human.
Ghost? Student? Or maybe a wardrobe that had decided to come to life? You never know at Hogwarts.
Instinctively she followed the sound. Clutching the book as if it were a shield or a weapon.
She turned in every possible direction. Her gaze searching for a shadow, a figure, anything.
"Um... hello? Is anyone there?" she asked, in a thin, trembling voice, more than usual. No answer. But she waited.
"If anyone is there... can you kindly tell me where the hell we are? Or maybe you're lost too?
So, like, should I panic alone or with someone?"
She couldn't see anyone, but hoped for an answer.

Grace's Speech - #483054┃ Speech - #007514
ℭaspian wasn’t lost.
Not technically.
He knew where he was—he was in a corridor. A very long corridor. And sure, maybe the statues had changed positions, and maybe there was a tapestry he swore he hadn’t seen before. And fine, the classroom was no longer where it had been last week. But he wasn’t lost.
He was… detouring.
He shot a glance at the suit of armor beside him. It was leaning just a bit too far to the left, as if it had an opinion, as if it was looking at him in judgement.
“Don’t look at me like that,” Caspian muttered, brushing past it with a scowl.
A knot of first-years scurried by in the opposite direction, their chatter bouncing off the stone walls. Caspian kept walking.
He turned another corner. Halted. Another hallway. Another portrait. Another set of steps that didn’t lead anywhere helpful.
“Brilliant,” he muttered, tugging his bag higher on his shoulder. “Absolutely brilliant.”
He exhaled through his nose—calmly. Deliberately. Like someone who was definitely not late and mildly spiraling. He would find the classroom. Eventually.
Or not.
"Um... hello? Is anyone there?"
Caspian froze.
"If anyone is there... can you kindly tell me where the hell we are? Or maybe you're lost too? So, like, should I panic alone or with someone?"
He hesitated.
The smart thing would be to vanish. Keep his pride intact. Let this mysterious wanderer remain a mystery and maintain plausible deniability that he, Caspian Villin, had no idea where he was.
But he didn’t walk away.
Slowly, deliberately, he pivoted on his heel and faced the direction the voice had come from. A girl stood a little ways down the corridor, clutching a book to her chest like it might offer answers the castle refused to give.
He cleared his throat—once—and said, flatly, “I’m not lost.”
A beat.
“Technically.
Im-”
He stopped. Saying ‘taking the long way’ sounded idiotic now.
“...detouring.”
He stopped a few paces from her, crossing his arms.
“I assume you’re also attempting to reach a classroom that no longer exists?” he added, tilting his head. “Or did you just take a wrong turn into the void for fun?”
There was the faintest trace of a smirk tugging at his mouth now. Not quite friendly. Not quite mocking. Just… amused.

A figure? A boy?
She stared at him for a moment, saying nothing, trying to work out whether she was looking at an ally, a ghost or simply an illusion from the castle.
By now Grace was no longer sure of anything, A mirage? No, he was simply a Slytherin boy.
"Definitely not lost, huh?" she repeated slowly, like she was savouring the words.
"Interesting. Then I'd like to take back what I said. If you are ‘technically’ taking a detouring, I am here as an official candidate for the honorary plaque: ‘Grace: pioneer of wrong turns and questionable decisions. They will probably put a bust of me at the intersection of the most unusual corridors".
She clutched the book to her chest, her now trusted companion of great adventures - although, if it could speak, it would probably declare itself a hostage..
She took a step towards the Slytherin, just one.
Not enough to look desperate. But only... moderately resigned.
At his question, she raised an eyebrow, with an expression mixed between puzzlement and irony.
"Can we say both? The main goal was to go to class... I think..." she said, her eyebrows still slightly raised, as if surprised herself at her own uncertainty - or maybe just pretending to be. "...But at some point I had a brilliant idea: ' What if I don't go back instead? What if instead I took this random turn and let fate guide me?" She looked around the room theatrically. "Secret: fate hasn't studied cartography either."
She paused, tilting her head to the right and raising her shoulders with her palms facing upwards. "Honestly, at this point I'm not sure if I'm looking for the classroom, for meaning in life, or just a place where I don't look so obviously lost."
She lowered her gaze for a moment, then stared at him again.
"Anyway, nice to meet you. Grace". She arched her eyebrows slightly and hinted at a theatrical bow, without letting go of the book. "Expert in failed orientation in a building, conversations with walls and symbolic interpretation of animal feathers and, of course, elegant escape from dignity".
She gave him a crooked smile, the kind of smile you throw at a stranger when you both know the situation is utterly ridiculous, but that it might also become less terrible after all.
"What about you? Do you really have any idea where you're going, or have you just trained yourself better than me to pretend everything is under control?"
He sounded calm. Too calm. Either he was good at pretending, or Hogwarts had already sucked the soul out of him. Either way, interesting.

Grace's Speech - #483054┃ Speech - #007514
ℭaspian blinked at her introduction. His lips twitched—but didn’t quite form a full smile. Not yet. He tilted his head, studying her like one might a riddle that had started to answer itself.
He didn't know whether to clap or respond.
“…A bust?” he echoed. “At the intersection of unusual corridors?”
A pause.
“I’d come see that.”
His tone was deadpan, but something flickered at the corner of his mouth again—a reluctant twitch of amusement. He leaned back slightly against the wall, arms still crossed, and tilted his head at her with a lazy sort of scrutiny.
“Grace,” he repeated. “Well, Grace - I’m Caspian,” he offered finally, tone dry but not unfriendly. “Pretender of knowing where I'm going. I majored in ‘Just walk with purpose and hope the corridor gives up before you do.’”
He didn’t bow. Just gave a short, barely-there nod, the kind that said 'this is the extent of my social energy for the day' and 'I am humoring you.'
“To answer your question,” he said after a beat, “I’m incredibly good at pretending. Years of practice. Call it a survival strategy.”
He glanced past her, eyeing the corridor behind like it might morph into something useful if stared at long enough. No luck. Still just stone, stairs, and a thousand wrong answers.
His gaze returned to her.
“I was headed to Charms, but the classroom has vanished”
He uncrossed his arms, only to drag one hand through his hair, as if that might untangle his dignity with it. “Honestly, I think the castle moves classrooms around for its own amusement. It’s either enchanted… or deeply petty.”
He eyed the book she was holding—clutched like it had secrets or teeth. “At least you brought a weapon. Or an emotional support object.”
A brow arched, the smirk finally fully surfacing.
I am so sorry for the late reply.

So his name is Caspian, I must try not to forget that, she thought to herself.
She stared at him for a few minutes, just like you do with those trick questions you find on tests: that mixture of curiosity and suspicion.
“Caspian”, she repeated under her breath, like she was trying to file the new information away in some mental folder, probably titled Other Hogwarts Maze Survivors.
"...Just walk with purpose ... eh? I must say, that's a fascinating philosophy. Maybe you should, or we should, write it on T-shirts. We could sell them to all those students who disappear between classes. Maybe we could even make a few galleons." She mimed rubbing her fingers together — the universal sign for money — and smirked.
“Enchantments class for you too, then”, she said clutching the book to her chest, as if it could magically show them the way to salvation.
“I'd say great! We're in the same situation. We're officially two non-lost people who are mysteriously wandering around the same area with no apparent purpose. Maybe it's fate? Coincidence? Hogwarts playing tricks on us? Take your pick. Anyway, yes, this book and I have faced many challenges, the perfect weapon.”
She took a step closer to the Slytherin, this time with much more confidence. “I have to say, I like your energy: you're like... ‘I know exactly what I'm doing’, even if the ceiling is collapsing around us. There's something relaxing about that, even if the situation isn't.”
She turned to look down the corridor behind him, perhaps after that slight fear it could offer them a suggestion. Obviously nothing, total silence except for a few dissatisfied moans from some armor.
“Since the enchantment classroom has decided to play hide and seek and we are obviously the seekers...” she muttered with a theatrical half-sigh, "...we can continue to wander into the unknown until one of us collapses first, or we can join forces. What do you say, Caspian the Detourist? Do you want to explore the mysteries of hostile magical architecture with a pioneer of questionable choices? "
She tilted her head, with a smile that was more genuine than ironic.
“I promise that if we get lost forever, you'll get to choose where to pitch our tent.”

Grace's Speech - #483054┃ Speech - #007514
ℭaspian let out a low breath — a soft exhale that might’ve been a laugh in disguise, if he’d allowed it.
“Caspian the Detourist,” he echoed dryly, like he was testing the title for weight, rolling it around in his head like a coin between fingers. “Sounds vaguely heroic. Or vaguely tragic. Maybe both.”
A pause.
“I’ll take it.”
He ran a hand through his hair, briefly rubbing at the back of his neck like he could shake off the absurdity of the morning — or maybe just the fact that he didn’t mind her company, which was arguably worse.
“Well,” he said finally, voice low, clipped, deliberate, “if I’m Detourist-in-Chief, I suppose it’s only fair I accept your alliance.” He looked at her then, sharp brown eyes scanning her like he was weighing a decision, or maybe just measuring how far to let his guard down.
“You can be in charge of morale. And… dramatic monologues.” A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. “You seem qualified.”
He nodded down the corridor ahead — another winding stretch of enchanted stone and shifting architecture that had no intention of being helpful.
“Come on,” he said. “Let’s see if Hogwarts is feeling generous today. Maybe it’ll gift us a corridor that doesn’t rearrange itself out of spite.”
He started walking — not because he was sure of the direction, but because standing still suddenly felt like giving up. The castle could smell hesitation. He was sure of it.
The corner of his mouth tugged upward, just a fraction.
“If we die in here,” he said lightly, “I’m blaming you.”

“We have decided,” Grace said with a completely satisfied smile and raised eyebrows.
"We can say it's official:We are a strategic alliance. While I am the Spokesperson for Positive Chaos, you are Mr. Detourist-in-chief. We are a solid balance, though outside eyes might point to us as a prelude to epic tragedy.
But for me both options have ...their charms."
She arranged the book, which she carried to her chest under one arm-now it had become more of a traveling companion than a shield-weapon-and moved to Caspian's side.
With a theatrical nod she pointed to the corridor before their eyes, as if instead of a labyrinth there was a walkway of honor.
“To you I will leave the sarcasm, while I guide our morale.” She said with a smile that indicated defiance.
"Just to warn you: if you find yourself in a forest call me, I am an excellent guide. Here..." she paused and raised her finger to the ceiling as if she were casting a prophecy, "...Here I am disastrous. But..." She added, raising her tone theatrically, “I'm very good company when reality starts to fall apart.”
They walked for a while, accompanied by their footsteps and the occasional irritated squeak of armor that seemed unenthusiastic about their presence.
“In any case,” she said, lowering her tone, as if reflecting aloud, "if the castle by sheer chance decides to swallow us alive forever...I want, indeed they must remember us not only with a bust, also with a portrait in the prncipal hallway. No sad epitaphs. Something like, 'They were gloriously lost. But with style.'"
The Gryffindor looked at the Slytherin out of the corner of her eye, her gaze moving between amused and complicit, and a tragicomic ballad formed in her head. 'Ballad of two students and a missing classroom.'
She made another gesture with her hand toward nowhere, as if the picture was in front of them.
"With you looking at the horizon, and me waving this book like a sacred weapon. Maybe with a dragon in the background-just to add to the pathos."
She turned to him, eyes full of irony, but with such sincerity.
"Come on, Caspian. Admit it. You're already having fun."

Thoughts - #009e77┃ Speech - #007514ℭaspian gave her a sidelong glance, one brow raised, like he was trying very hard not to look amused. And failing.
"Fun is a strong word," he said at last, arching an eyebrow in her direction. “Mildly entertained by your impending mental breakdown? Sure.”
He glanced down at the book she was still wielding like a bludgeon of destiny. “And that portrait idea? That’s going straight into the school’s history curriculum.”
They walked a few more paces, her words still echoing in his ears — gloriously lost, but with style. He was going to remember that one. It was ridiculous. But annoyingly catchy.
They turned another corner. Caspian slowed. Paused.
Frowned.
Something ahead looked… different.
He squinted, taking a few steps forward — slower now, cautious, like the corridor might pull a fast one the moment he got hopeful. But no. There, just in front of him, was a door. Not just any door.
The door.
“Well,” he muttered, staring at it like it might vanish if he blinked too fast. “Either we’ve hallucinated the right classroom... or Hogwarts just got tired of mocking us.”
He turned to her, slow and theatrical, like he was about to deliver a dramatic line — then ruined it by deadpanning, “We live to die another day.”Word count --> 215 words

The young witch cast a glance at him, then suddenly burst into genuine laughter.
“Live to die another day? … Um … I’d say that’s not enough for us…”
Her eyes narrowed like she was thinking hard about something.
“I think we need something more…”
She did not continue right away, searching for the right words.
“...something with a poetic decadence, something more chaotic. But I forgive you, you need to cut yourself some slack; it’s definitely the tension of the moment.”
She moved a step, as if intending to leave, but turned abruptly and continued with Caspian.
“Anyway, if this, after all, is the right door, I make a proposal: let's not walk in as two students who have overstayed their welcome, but as two legends in search of a stage.”
She raised the book as if it was a torch. "Let the curtain rise. If it’s an illusion, we’ll laugh about it. If it’s a trap, we’ll write a song about it. And if it truly is the classroom… then I only hope there’s at least one comfortable chair.”
She bowed and tilted her head dramatically. “Hello, Detourist-in-chief? It’s been a pleasure having you as my companion on this adventure. May the epic continue!”
And with a dramatic gesture, she opened the door..
