Magic of winter time
[quote][quote]
[quote]Dear Adlai,
Firstly, I'd like to apologize for this sudden letter and for taking quite some time. I wouldn't be surprised if you thought I wouldn't write at all. Yesterday, I remembered I told you I'd write as felt guilty that it took me so long.
I hope you're the one reading this letter. The owl I'm using to send this is Hooty and he's terrible with directions, so I wouldn't be surprised if he dropped this in someone else's home. Then, if this isn't you... Well, I shouldn't think about the consequences it'd have if this ended in some muggle's possession. Anyways, how is your break going?
Mine's been spectacular so far, despite some issues with my mother and cousin. Father got to meet me at the Platform, and he'll be staying with us for a very long time. I'm so thankful my mother decided to stay here in England for this break, I've missed my family dearly! Speaking of which, I hope you're having a great time with yours. You have sisters, correct? It must be a joy to have them around. Though I'm an only child, it's almost as if Trent is my brother. Did I ever tell you he's a big fan of Ghost, too?
This winter feels a lot more chaotic than the other ones. I always go to bed feeling drained. Everyone's been so active and energetic, always wanting to spend time with me. My younger cousin, Annabelle, always comes up with a game for us to play, and aunt Jessica wants me to help her cook, even though I can't cook at all!
I suppose they've missed our times together now that I started attending Hogwarts. It's very sweet and it makes me teary-eyed... Merlin, I'm so pathetic when it comes to feelings, aren't I? Moving on... Trent's making me learn about muggle culture and that makes me think of you.
He's made a friend at Durmstrang called Varban (it means willow in Bulgarian, interesting, right?), that lives close to us and is muggle-born and we've had a lot of fun visiting his place. For instance, he taught me how to play various videogames in a small device named Nintendo DS.
I played different versions of a character named Mario (the racing one was my favorite), and another one of a very fast blue creature. But my favorite so far is called Pokemon. I'm quite a fan of magical creatures (father's obsessed with them!), so I couldn't help but fall in love with the so-called Pokemons.
Trent says I'm addicted to this game and I want to ask Varban to give it to me because he said the Nintendo is old now and that he doesn't play anymore. One of the Pokemons reminds me of you, by the way. I believe it's called Eevee. I don't know why, I can't even see the resemblance, but I suppose both of you are cute.
We spend most of the time in his heated swimming pool, however. It's quite chilly now (there's snow everywhere) and it feels good to relax in the cold water. Trent managed to take a picture of when I was trying to get dry, in order to leave and play more Pokemon. Alongside this letter, I'll be sending a copy of the picture. Both Trent and Varban are making me do this. They say it's funny, while I think it's embarrassing...
I don't have much to say at the moment (this letter is already getting quite long, isn't it?). I apologize if this letter is too long. I guess I wanted to make up for the long time I took. Well, tell me how you're doing! I mean, if Hooty actually gets your address right.
Letter to @Adlai Rod, set a week after the start of winter break.

Letter sent to @Virgil Lee

Dear Virgil,
I’m glad that you wrote me and I’m glad that you’re having fun. I’m still getting used to the moving pictures but you do look rather silly. Hooty did just fine getting the letter to me though my aunt almost found the letter instead and trust me we don’t want that to happen.
Like you my father was the one to meet me on the platform, he told me there would be a surprise when we got home. Low and behold both sets of grandparents were there, my poor grandmother on my Mum’s side looked so sick, she hates flying but that’s the only way she and my grandfather could get to Wales from Afghanistan.
I do in fact have sisters! We all share a room so I’ve hardly been able to get any sleep due to their constant pestering about what it was like at our school. Of course I changed all the subjects to those any other muggle child would learn.
I absolutely love Pokémon, in fact even though I play sports I’m quite the nerd! There’s a new game that came out on the console Nintendo Switch called Pokémon Sword and Shield and I’ve been dying to play it, though sadly I don’t have the console.
I hope this letter finds you in good health and in good wishes,
Sincerely, your friend.
- Adlai Winifred Rod
P.S here’s a picture my aunt took! I think it captures my family in a raw moment.
I’m the one in blue!

[quote]Dear Addie,
Oh, you have no idea how relieved I am to know that Hooty delivered the letter correctly, that's a first, honestly. Well, hopefully, it won't be a one-time thing and he'll continue to do as he should. You seem to be having a great time and that warms my heart. You look very good in blue, I must say.
I opened your gift on the way to the platform and I really loved it. You're very talented! Unlike you, I'm not very good at making things, but despite knowing that, I've been trying to make something you'd like. They never end up just right, though. So, I've settled to buying you a proper gift, other than the Furby-thing I promised. When Hooty gets to you on Christmas eve, hopefully, my gift won't be a disappointment. Please, do not get high expectations.
Speaking of Christmas, things are starting to get even more chaotic now. The radio can only play popular Christmasy-songs, it seems. Not that I'm complaining. Although I wouldn't consider myself the best fan of this particular holiday, of course, I appreciate the effort. We even decorated a Christmas tree, quite the adventure. Everyone is getting more excited. My aunt has been cooking a lot, so much food that I'm sure I'm, at least, ten kilos heavier than before!
Father and I decorated the living room and while we were dancing, fooling around (father was conjuring fake snow out of his wand, which is really cool!), Annabelle, my cousin, took a picture of me. I'll be sending more pictures so you can start to get used to moving ones, while I expect you to do the same. Still-pictures are quite weird. To me, at least.
Well, I'll be going to the Diagon Alley right now, to buy some things with my mom. Luckily I'll come across something that reminds me of you. Since Varban knows everything about muggle stores and such, I asked him to buy your Furby. He'll around a place called Amazon or E-bay, and when it arrives I'll send it to you. If I can't, I'll give you when the break is over.

Court Terrace, Merthyr Tydfil CF47Dear Virgie,
Hooty is gladly doing just fine finding me, though I think it may be because of the strong smell of fish in my house at the moment. I’m glad you like my gift! Not long ago someone’s owl swooped down and tore it up so I had to start all over again.
I’m sure whatever you make is wonderful and remember practice makes perfect. As for Christmas things are pretty slow at my house being that no one other than my fathers parents celebrate it.
Fun Fact: My dad converted to Islam after he married my Mum!
My grandparents said they didn’t mind spending Arba’een with us though which made me really happy that we’d all be celebrating together.
Gift wise you don’t need to get me anything. I’m very content just knowing you and I are friends and are able to write to one another over the winter break.
However do know that I have my trunk packed for my return and my tennis rackets and a few tennis balls are inside so get ready to play a match with me!
P.S you look really silly with your dad. I’m happy to know your having fun with your family.
Here’s a photo of my youngest sister Johanna, she got her first Hijab today! Everyone was very proud.

Chesham, HP5 3AYDear Addie,
It's Christmas Eve! I hope this letter doesn't interrupt your time with your family. I don't know what Arba'een is (I feel so ignorant, please explain everything to me!), but, I'm in hopes of you having a great time. If you're celebrating it today, that is. Well, anyway, please tell your sister that she looks adorable! Pink really suits her!
I'm sorry I took so long to write back, I've been in a sour mood... Sadly, my mother and I got into a very heated argument after she found me writing to both you and Isaac. While she interrogated me with questions about both of you, I accidentally let it slip that Isaac is half-vampire. She did not take that well, as one would imagine. While I tried to make things better, mum is quite obsessed with my health (being a Healer and all that), and so she went on a rant about how vampires are dangerous and that I shouldn't talk to Isaac.
I got mad. She got mad and raised her voice... Things have been tense between us since. Hopefully, Christmas will bright us together. Been spending more time out with Varban, Trent and father, but it still makes me sad that she doesn't trust me. Merlin, I feel like crying again. This is getting quite sad, I'm sorry. I shouldn't say this. I hope I didn't make you feel awkward. Sorry again.
Anyways, I'll be sending your gift with this letter. I hope you like it!
Hugs,
Virgil Lee.
ps. No pictures this time.
The gift is a silver necklace with a badger pendant. It comes with a small note in Virgil's messy handwriting. It says, 'I have a message for you: you are a soft sweater, pulled over hands cupping a mug of warm tea; you are radiant, entrancing, positively bursting. From V, to Addie.'

Dear Virgie,
Arba’een is the religious observance that occurs forty days after the Day of Ashura. It commemorates the sad passing of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad, who was killed on the 10th day of the month of Muharram.
Imam Husayn ibn Ali and 71 of his companions were killed by Yazid's army in the Battle of Karbala in 61 AH. This year it was held in the 19th of December, next year it will be held on the 3rd of October I believe.
I’m sorry to hear that you got into a argument with your mom. I know how arguments with your parents can go but I’m not sure how it is with wizarding parents. However, from my point of view I don’t think Issac is dangerous at all, he seems to me like a teddy bear even though we haven’t really talked much he’s fun to be around! I hope things ease over in time for Christmas Day.
I was able to open your gift in the only place I can get any privacy in my house (which is the bathroom.)
I absolutely love it and the note you sent me! It’s good to know I have such an amazing friend in my corner.
P.S Sorry but I don’t have any pictures for this time around.

[quote]Dearest Addie,
Unfortunately, things aren't getting better, but I'll spare you the details of our second argument this time around. And yes, I agree with you, Isaac is... Sweet. Not at all the monster mother is trying to paint him as. Let's just say, things got really serious.
Moving on... I'm so glad you liked the gift. I was wandering about Diagon Alley when I saw the necklace and immediately thought of you. It was hard to think of a good note that didn't end up looking like a song or poem, so I'm relieved that you liked it.
And even though I don't know the names you mentioned in your previous letter, Arba’een does seem to be a sad, but important celebration. And it's fascinating that the date changes depending on the year.
I'm writing this in a hurry as my father is already calling me downstairs. There's a lot to do today, so I'm sorry if this is too short. I'll tell you all about my Christmas adventures once I actually get to experience them, haha.

I’m sorry to hear things are going very well for you and I hope things get better. If you like you can talk to me about it when we get back from the break.
Abra’een doesn’t exactly have a light hearted meaning but it is a wonderful celebration that hopefully one day I can celebrate with you if you‘d like! The date changes almost every year because in Islam we use the lunar calendar.
Anyway, I do hope you have a wonderfully merry Christmas! Please write to me when you can and tell me how it was and if things are better between you and your mother but if the letters we are writing to one another is the cause of your arguments then I understand completely if you decide not to write me back.
P.S With this letter I send you another gift!

Virgil, I’m not sure why but you always remind me of the most vintage of things. You have such a refined presence though we are constantly laughing when we are together. I hope you have an amazing Christmas.

First, ah, you didn't have to give me another gift! Do not get me wrong, I loved it. Also, I've never been told I have a refined presence. Have to admit I found it very funny, but I deeply appreciate it. However, now I feel like giving you something else.
Well, things are still... Problematic between the two of us. (Understatement much?). I tried apologizing and talking to her, but she can be quite stubborn. I wouldn't want to trouble you with it... But, all in all, it was a great day. I'm still full from the great meal aunt Jessica cooked. Also, spending time with my father is always great. I'm starting to doubt that this is all a fever dream.
And yes, I'd love to celebrate it with you some other day! I'm sure it'd be lovely.
Well, I'm sorry for this short letter. I have to go. Trent needs help with something.

Court Terrace, Merthyr Tydfil CF47Dear Virgie,
I can’t believe it’s already New Year’s Eve. To think only a few months ago I had received my invitation to Hogwarts where I would meet you and Isaac!
Does your family watch fireworks on New Year’s? My grandfather had wanted to bring some so we could light them ourselves but the airport wouldn’t let him take them onto the plane here and he wasn’t sure if he would be able to mail them to us. Either way we were able to buy some sparklers!
My aunt’s new boyfriend came by the other day with a box full of glow sticks for my sisters and I! We all plan to stay up until midnight for the New Year so my grandmother and I will be going shopping today for sweets to help us all stay awake.
Some kids that live down the street from me have the same plan so I might be able to play with them. I hope you have a great New Year! Also, don’t worry about the gift. I’m just glad you like it.
P.S. Remember, you can always talk to me about anything. Let your family know I say ‘hi and happy New Year!’
