Meeting in the Tower
Date: 2/7/2025
Mikey leaned on the sill of the arched window of the Owlery, one hand holding the crumpled parchment in the ball of his hand, the other draped over the sill of stone. Air here was more potent, more wintery and pulling at his hair and the bottom of his robes, filled with the scent of feathers and wood. The sun was setting west over the mountains, making long golden shadows across the floor where dozens of owls slept, preened, or regarded him with lazy distain.
He breathed in and glanced down at the letter once more. It would not take long. It never did. It had been simple enough to write to his dad at the start of school brief reports, small stories, questions about home. But now. things were difficult. He'd already rewritten it three times.
At last, he knelt by a drowsing barn owl with mottled speckled feathers and offered the note. "To Liverpool," he breathed, placing it carefully into the owl's leg. "Flat over the bakery."
The owl blinked at him, puffed out its feathers and flew up and away in a whirl of wings, gliding on out into the wind as if they'd practiced it a hundred times. Mikey stared at it, his eyes fixed on it until it was no larger than a tiny dot against the clouds.
He lingered there for an extra moment, arms folded over the windowsill, chin on them. The letter hadn't said much, only a perfunctory "I'm coping," a mention of a runaway bouncy bulb in Herbology, and a question. Will you be at King's Cross? No pressure. No accusation. Only. a hope, creased between the lines.
Mikey shut his eyes for a moment before standing up to height and brushing the dust from his knees. He looked once more in the direction of the sky before glancing down at the stairs, palms sunk deep into his pockets. He wanted nothing. And still, he'd posted the letter. And sometimes, that was all that mattered. When he looked back to the stairs he saw a figure climbing up towards him.

Meeting in the Tower
Mikey turned around at the sound of a voice saying "Oh!" behind him. It took him a second to comprehend that someone was in the tower with him. He must have let his mind wander again. The wind still pulled on his robes and the owl feather scent still lingered in the air. But the moment in his head had been gently shattered by the new voice and nervous scrabble of footsteps. It was a girl, Hufflepuff in appearance. Deep blue eyes and chocolate brown hair. She stood posed in the stone archway as if she weren't quite certain she was there at all.
He knew the expression. He'd used it himself more times than he could remember since September. For a moment, Mikey didn't respond, only smiled in at her. the sort that wasn't trying to impress but naturally tended to wrinkle the corners of his eyes in a way that diffused the edge of the tension in the air around him. "You don't have to apologize," he told her, in an even tone as if they were both privy to some shared comprehension of bare rooms. "I was just wrapping it up. Letter sent. Mission accomplished."
He took a step to the side to give her more space. Then he wiped his hands across his robes as if erasing imaginary weight. "Didn't mean to frighten you either. To be fair you frightened me first." He rested against the wall. “you know you've got really great timing. Its going to be sunset shortly. And the best vantage point in the castle is from up here if you ask me. Also the owls are quite decent compony most of the time. Though that little one there can be a bit cranky." He teased indicating at likely the friendliest faced owl in the room. Mikey could not but observe that the tower appeared to glow brighter when she smiled. 'Thats a neat trick' he thought to himself believing it was a charm or magic of some sort.
"I’ve had this thought for a while now" he said. "People told me once the Owlery was just where you'd post letters. But I think it's something more than that. A bit like a waiting room for dreams. Like, every time someone takes a letter and ties it to an owl and releases it they're sending out something greater than words. A bit of themselves that goes soaring hoping it'll find its way into someone else's hands. Something you're too afraid to ask out loud or something you couldn't muster up the guts to say in person. Or maybe it's just hoping to receive a reply. For some proof someone out there still cares. That they're still listening.” He shrugged afterwards, not realizing he was being poetic, or existential and looked at her again with that same smile that his father said made it seem like he was getting up to no good.
He leaned forward a little bit keeping his eyes on hers. He wasn’t just filling the silence with idle chat. He was asking questions that he truly wanted the answers to. "So… sending a letter home?" he said softly, nodding in the direction of the envelope still in her hands. no pressure in his voice. Just a casual tone like leaving a door open and allowing her to walk through if she chose to. He absentmindedly turned to look at the horizon where the sun was starting to set. It was leaving beautiful gold and rose colors in its wake on the clouds away beyond the hills. The wind tugged at his robes and hair once more, this time as though the moment itself were waiting to see if she would join him for a little while. “Anyway, I’m Mikey,” he added, giving a half bow like they were meeting at a ball instead of between owl droppings and windchill. “Ravenclaw and reluctant letter writer. And you?”

Meeting in the Tower
Mikey watched as Amelia stooped into the curtsy. An immediate smile pulled at the corner of his mouth, and he swept back a grand step, again bowing, this time lower and more dramatically, as though he were in some bygone ballroom scene.
There was a simplicity now to the way he stood, like a knot had been untied somewhere within him. Her presence had pulled the darkness out of the corners of the tower and substituted it with something lighter. Not joy, precisely, but something like it. It resided in her laughter, in her truthfulness, and in the fact that she did not attempt to sound brilliant when brilliance wasn't necessary.
He turned back toward the sky again as she followed his gaze, the last gold burning out into crimson. “You’re right, though,” he murmured, softer now, letting the moment speak for itself. “The light up here. feels older somehow. Like the sky’s been saving its best colors for just this hour.” He rubbed at his arm absently and let out a soft breath, clouds of it forming in the chilly air.
And then she asked him if his letter was home. He did not reply immediately. Not because he was reluctant—but because he was struggling to find the exact truth deep within himself. He did not wish to lie, did not wish to avoid. But he could not see how to bring words to the still hurt that lay behind that one little word.
Still gazing upward, he nodded brusquely. "Yeah. I mean… sort of. It's to my dad. Just… checking in. I guess." He fidgeted with the seam of his sleeve. "It was easier back then, writing to him. Like… when we started school. I had all these stories, things I couldn't wait to tell him. And now, I don’t know. It feels harder. Like I'm not quite sure what he wants to hear anymore."
He wasn't sounding unhappy, exactly. Just tired, and a year or two more mature than he had any business being. "But I mailed it anyway," he said quickly, with a lopsided shrug. "I think sometimes that's what it's all about. Just. sending it. Even if the words aren't right." He looked over at her again, the gold flash in the blue of her eyes. "Anyway, sorry," he had a sheepish smile. "Didn't mean to go whole tragic poet on you. That's a Thursday thing."
There was a silence, not an uncomfortable one, but just quiet. And then, without even being aware of it, he finished, "It's nice speaking to you, Amelia Lerelle, human of Hufflepuff." He gave the title a small bow of respect. "Next time I'm up here," he continued, "I think I'll be hoping to see you." And for a moment, he didn't look away. Didn't attempt to conceal that he meant it. Then, as boys have a tendency to do when they've spoken something too true, he grinned once more and looked away.

Meeting in the Tower
Mikey's laughter was lost in the stone of the Owlery. "A title and a curtsy? I'm honored," he parodied with mock deference, and bowed his head again as if to receive some dignitary's honor. "You're going to have me learning proper ballroom manners at this rate." The wind kept blowing across the tower, flipping both of their hair back as the rest of the sunlight faded. Night was encroaching slowly from the hills, and Mikey sensed the cold envelop his arms like a soft reminder that time was passing.
He looked out again at the fading sky, then across at the sweep of the staircase, then across at Amelia. She stood there etched in the pale blue-grey light, feathers rustling behind her like autumn leaves in the wind, and for a moment they had appeared to have moved past time itself. "I should be getting back," he said after a brief hesitation, voice low. "They will be locking up soon, and I don't particularly want to be escorted back to Ravenclaw Tower by a Prefect."
He began towards the stairs, then stopped and walked a few steps back. "I'm extremely happy you went up here, Amelia," he went on. "And not only because I had the entire sky to myself. You made the place seem cozier." With a half turn, he continued down a few steps, then leaned on the railing and looked up once more. “Maybe next time we both bring letters,” he suggested. “And a snack. Less poetic, more practical.
And with a last goodnight wave, he said, "Night, Human of Hufflepuff." And he vanished quickly down into the twirling stone stair, fading footsteps and dying sunlight, carrying with him the warmth of the encounter and the promise of another meeting.
