Speech -- Thoughts

Transfiguration was giving Pam the time of her life. Not in the good way.

It had become hard, much harder than it had the first few months of the year. One would think, it's probably because the lessons were getting complicated as the months progressed. If you asked Pam for her opinion, she would tell you, Transfiguration has a beef with her. Was it because of her growing fascination for Astronomy? That would be very petty of it. That's the kinda thing I'd do if I found my best friend hanging out with someone who's not me. Best to not let Ruth find out her mental disposition.

It was too hot to be suffering so much.

When she had gotten tired of the common room, she had decided she needed some fresh air and had packed up her books and stepped out. Her first thought had, like always, been the Astronomy Tower, but well, she figured it might not be a very good idea to practice the glass to sand spell there... She might be ending up changing other stuff to sand, and that would be disastrous.

Unfortunately for her, it was still summer and Pam and heat never did well together. So her internal monologue was something like, Okay, let's try this again. Maybe if I can get this done before lunchtime- Ooh I'm starving... Nope, focus.

"Quarzium..." She tried, "Quarzium? I don't think I'm saying the word right. Was it quartzium?" She groaned, "I need it to be winter, I'm not patient enough for this."

Third Time's a Charm PV Makaio
Makaio could be found swimming in the lake to beat the heat of the day. He had heard tell of all sorts of monsters that lived in this body of water, but never once ran into a single thing he didn’t think he could take in a fight. Coming back to the shore, Makaio found yet another one of his students moping about, this one, Ms. Graham, he remembered, seemed too suffer the heat more than anything else! He might as well go see what the matter was - a student in need was a student ready to learn!

When the depth was shallow enough for him to stand, he walked the rest of the way, the water slowly drying off his body from both the heat and the the spell he cast silently as he whipped the water out of his hair with a hand. By the time he reached the shore he was perfectly dry thanks to the spell ‘tergeo,’ the siphoning spell, he had cast using nonverbal wandless magic. Makaio walked over to his student, bending down briefly to pick up his olive green color shirt and pulling it over this head in one motion.

“Ms. Graham,” he hailed with a few more steps to close their distance, pulling the shirt down the rest of the way. His hair was still slightly damn, dripping on his dry shirt, leaving the impression he still just came out from a swim or he was just that sweaty. “I believe the spell you are looking for is quarzicum. However, it seems you are in need a swim more than sand! Are you sure you are ok out in this heat?"

Pam flinched as someone called her name from behind. Admittedly, it took her a few milliseconds to register her surname, since she hadn't actually had a lot of people call her with it. Her interactions with the professors were limited. She was more of a "sit at the back and solve your problems yourself" kind of person than an "ask your professor for help" kinda person.

That was not to say she didn't like, or was scared of her Transfiguration professor. He was nice, taught well, and the classes were fun. Mostly. Assuming you could get the spell done. He was also infinitely less terrifying than a certain grim-faced professor.

Thankfully potions wasn't in Pam's weak spot list just yet.

Admittedly, she was startled to see Professor Kane appear out of nowhere. Alright, maybe he didn't actually appear out of thin air, His hair was wet, and Pam guessed he had been in the lake. Pam had never swum in the Great Lake before. She had heard of a lot of creatures which were supposed to be living in the lake and honestly, she was too scared of the idea of encountering them to consider swimming there. Maybe one day.

"Right, there was a 'c' in the middle!" She recalled, "Right... I'll try again." I am very much becoming a molten icecream but it's fine. The only thing that can help me now is a snowstorm—. She cleared her throat and answered his question, "Uh, no I'm alright professor."

Makaio thought maybe he got the name wrong. It took her a moment realize he was talking to her. That was almost impossible as Makaio was quite proud of his name recall and made it a point to remember everyone’s name during the first week of classes. He was almost certain this student was one Pamela Graham. However, he was proven right in the next moment as she finally seemed to recognize her name. He supposed that made sense, she probably thought she was alone out here.

The last of his hair and close had dried by the time he sat down across from her as she then acknowledged her mistake. He smiled warmly and nodded. “Yep. Just be sure to pronounce it right and it should work like a charm. Why don’t you give it a try and then use reparifarge to return it back to normal.” He left out the part where he thought it would be interesting how she would do it if the sand fell on the already sandy ground near the lake. He left that doubt though silent and figured he wouldn’t give her anything more to worry about. “Well, Ms. Graham. Let’s see what you can do!”

Pam nodded her head in acknowledgement, eyeing the glass carefully. Assuming the transfiguration spell worked properly, reparifarge would be easy. She was good at that specific spell, thankfully.

She needed to get the glass to sand spell right first though. I wonder what would happen if it changed like... half? She shook her head. With the professor present in front of her, it wouldn't do to get too sidetracked. Yes, we can cross that bridge if we come to it.

She raised her wand and pointed it at the pieces of glass, casting "Quartzicum." carefully, making sure she got the word correct. Unfortunately for her, the spell... worked, but not completely. So the end result was some sort of glass-sand hybrid material which Pam had never seen in her life.

Oh dear, looks like we've come to that bridge.

She frowned, staring down at the created material in confusion. Oh that's not good. I also probably shouldn't cast the spell again right? Would reparifarge work on this? What even is this—? She glanced up at her professor in a 'please send help' kind of expression, unsure of what exactly to do in this situation. "Would.... reparifarge solve this problem?" She asked sheepishly, feeling rather embarrassed.

The large man waited, even seated he overshadowed the student, shifting a little bit to let the sun warm her since he was blocking her in shadow. Patiently he watched Pamela silently seem worried about what to do about the piece of glass. She finally seemed like she came to some resolution and decided to cast the spell.

The glass started to melt, not quite falling to sandy bits but more a glop of something in-between. She could indeed fix this with reparifarge but often times students get too flustered by their mistakes to confidently cast it in a way to restore the item to rights. “Here,” he said softly taking the piece from his student. He ran a hand softly, gently, almost endearingly, over the glass and as he crossed over the melty bits they snapped back to place as good as new. He didn’t even utter a spell. “There,” he said simply and handed the piece back to her.

“Reparifarge can indeed fix a half transfiguration like this. However, it takes a bit of finesse and patience to get it back to rights. I’d rather you focus on casting the spell as it should be. But if ever this happens, you can indeed try to fix it yourself. Now. Let’s try it again.”

Oh? Wandless magic? Pam watched the professor run a hand over the pieces of glass and they were soon good as new. She noted the fact that he had not spoken a single word immediately after, and her curiosity increased even further. Wandless and non-verbal magic? Cool. She had heard of the both kinds of magic, and had read enough about it to know that it was not very easy to attain either. She tried to remember if professor Kāne had ever done that in class before and she had absolutely missed it, for she hadn't known that the latter was capable of it.

So like, if he stood still, looked at his opponent and cast Stupefy silently, would the person fly away? Pam had a sudden mental image of Wanda Maximoff and had to stifle a grin. That would be so cool though.

First things first. She raised her wand again, and after temporarily silencing her nerves, cast "Quartzicum." for what would be the... fiftieth time that day. But this time, it seemed that her hard work had finally paid off, as the shiny transparent pieces of glass shifted into sunny yellow globules of sand.

Pam clapped her hands in excitement, "Hey, it finally worked—" she cleared her throat as she remembered the professor who was still sitting in front of her, and casting "Reparifarge" quickly, changing the sand back into glass. The counterspell worked easily enough.

"Thank you for your help professor." She said.

She could finally head inside now. Maybe finally get herself some food.
Pam has left the thread.
