"We're home!" Claire's mère called out politely knocking on the door of their family's mansion to be let in. Claire was standing next to her. A handsome French man opened the door for the two ladies. "Père!" Claire shouted out running the last step toward him for a big hug. "I'm home," she said in a calmer and quieter voice to her father. "So, I see," he said in a deep calm voice, partially muffled by Claire's thick hair.
But the calmness wasn't for long. Two young boys, identical looking, ran toward Claire's legs and pelted hugs onto her. "I hugged her first! You get off and wait your turn!" said the bolder looking boy. "No fair! She hasn't been home for a million years! I want to hug her!" protested the second boy.
Claire broke off from the hug with her father and bent down on eye level to the two boys. "Louis, please be polite to your brother. There will be plenty of time to hug me. I will be home for about a month or two,' she addressed the little boy on her right. To the pouting boy on her left Claire said, Paul, lets go inside. Then you can hug me there."
Both boys suddenly got a mischievous grin on there faces. "I want to go inside," said Paul. "Me too," said Louis. They were suddenly being too polite to each other, and still had that smile on their faces. Claire frowned in thought. Something was odd. They wanted to go inside the house too much. WC: 264

Claire walked in the house with her family. For some reason they let her be in front, and go in first. She shrugged in off. Her family was probably just being polite to her, because she hadn't been home since Christmas. Claire looked around at the furnishings. Everything looked just the same as when she last been here. It hadn't been easy being gone for most of the year, but she got used to it.
"Why don't we go in the sitting room for some tea," said Mère. "We'll get the tea. You sit down Claire," she said firmly. Claire stared for a second. Her mother was never firm. But Claire was a good girl, so she obeyed.
Claire walked down the hall alone and opened the door. There was a bird cage on the coffee table! How extremely odd, she thought. We don't have a pet. Claire walked closer to the covered cage. There was a card propped up against the cage. It read CLAIRE on the envelope. Claire's heart started beating faster. She slid the card out of the envelope. It was a congratulations card. There was a picture of a Snowy Owl, in winter on the cover. It read:
Dear Claire,
We are so proud of you for adjusting away from home and getting such good grades. Here is a little friend for you to take with you for your next year to be less lonely. She was born on April second of last year. We trust that you are responsible enough for her.
Welcome home Claire,

Her parents had signed their names in cursive on the bottom, and helped her brothers to.
Claire shed a tear. Her heart started pounding harder. She had guessed what bird was under the cage. Claire yanked the cover off. She was right! A Snowy Owl! Claire had wanted one for ever so long! The Owl hooted twice in a wise voice to her. "I think I'll call you Whisper," she murmured to the owl, opening the cage hatch.
Her new pet turned her head and hooed at her family on the doorway watching. Claire had temporary forgot them. Now all the odd actions made sense! She started crying tears of joy as she quickly ran to hug her family in thanks. No words were necessary. But Whisper didn't think so, as some light 'hoo's drifted through the house. WC: 400
