Luka's mothers had never given him a real reason as to why he hadn't received a letter from Durmstrang or Koldovstoretz. Luka figured they were likely hiding something from him, but the truth was they were just as surprised as he was. They knew his birth mother, Katya, was a perfectly normal witch; they'd both known her since their first years at Koldovstoretz together. At first, they thought perhaps he was a squib, but that would leave no explanation for the times of clear evidence of his magical abilities. Then their minds turned to his father, a man they had never met and knew very little about. They assumed he was the reason Luka was only accepted to a magical school once they allowed half-breeds. They never told Luka of this suspicion in case they were wrong, or worse, in case they were right. But despite his mothers' best effort to keep him oblivious, the boy was slowly piecing everything together on his own. Every moment spent thinking about it, or in this case, talking about it with Boris, led him closer and closer to figuring out the truth.
Luka listened to Boris's reasons for smiling, he, of course, thought it was ridiculous, but to each their own. "My dislike for it stems from the idea that people who always smile are hiding something, making them untrustworthy. Though I get the sense you don't align with that belief," He said monotonously, not allowing any of his interest in the conversation known to the other part.
"Well I would assume every trip made to Hogwarts this year will be quite eventful and dramatic. I've heard something tends to catch fire or explode during the dances they host. I'm not completely surprised, they sound to be an eccentric bunch." He pauses to think for a moment, "I suppose most would answer that question hoping for friendship or gaining knowledge. I hope the year will be survivable so I can go home," he added rather bitterly. The school clearly didn't want him for his first year so he didn't want it at all. "What are your expectations of this year?" He asked, flipping the question back to Boris.

Boris listened to Luka's words, trying to decipher his personality. This boy actually had a personality, and Boris really liked him. He spoke truly. Even though he was only 12, he'd seen real fake smiles. Some people, some neighbors, smile to hide their emotions, real fake faces... But he wasn't about to do that. He was just smiling to avoid appearing rude. His normal facial expression was a bit stiff. "Well, you're not wrong, some people's fake smiles are annoying. But my silly cousin, who made me love smiling, is definitely against this definition. You can tell when some people's smiles are sincere." Boris sighed and looked at Luka. He was new to this school and wanted to meet new people, and Luka was the first person he had met. Maybe they would become better friends in the future. "Ah yeah Hogwarts. My cousin is there and judging from the letters she's written me I can definitely say you're right." When Boris Luka asked him about his own expectations, he paused for a moment. He longed to attend school. His father had attended this school, and he always spoke of it with pride. His father's discipline and respectfulness had helped him. His father had also been a broom racer there. He wanted to be just like his father. "Ah well, actually my expectations were already met when I joined the school. My only expectation from the school was that it would accept me despite being a part-veela. Oh, and definitely the broom races. Learning new things is important this year, but I'd say I care more about striving to be good at broom races." |
