speaking: #936606The crisp autumn air buzzed with excitement as Astrid stepped onto the bustling platform of King’s Cross Station, Platform 9¾, her fingers gripping the handle of her suitcase.
"...And don't forget to write every other day" , her mother continued on and on, her voice a mixture of concern and love, detailing what to do and what not to do.
"Mom, I know. I need to go now, I love you, okay?" she said, attempting to put a note of reassurance into her tone. After receiving a forehead kiss and the sight of few tears from her mother, Astrid bid her final goodbyes and walked towards the train.
The train, which was lengthy and magnificent, stood on the platform, its metal gleaming in the morning sun, giving it a natural luster. Golden letters spell out its name along the side, also catching the morning light. The windows reflect the busy crowd, and she could see children's faces pressed against the glass with excitement.
Time to join them.
She made her way onto the train after climbing the necessary few steps; excitement and nervousness flowing through her. This was a new milestone.
She had definitely hoped and look forward to meeting new people and making friends on the train, but it felt like everyone already knew each other so well. She would hate interrupting conversations or being a bother.
Well, alone it is, then. Finding an empty compartment, Astrid slid the door open and settled in, pressing her forehead against the window as she waved her mother a final goodbye.
In just 15 minutes, the train was going to depart.
And with it, she would set out on a journey that would transform her life forever.

ℭaspian stood on Platform 9¾, doing his best to remain calm while his family swirled chaotically around him.
“Oh, for Merlin’s sake, Aoife, he’s going to Hogwarts, not into battle,” his father muttered, crossing his arms as Caspian’s mother fussed over the buttons of his robes like it was his wedding day.
“I know that, Liam, but his hair is sticking up again—and he didn’t eat enough at breakfast—and he—”
"Mother, I'm fine." He protested.
“You say that, but you always forget something—wait, did you pack your extra pair of socks? And what about your quills? Your left-handed one too, right?”
“Yes,” he said, smiling faintly. “Triple-checked.”
“I bet there are dragons at Hogwarts!” shouted Liam Jr, the ten-year-old, swinging an invisible sword in the air.
“Nooo, they wouldn’t let dragons live there,” argued Niamh, seven.
Meanwhile, five-year-old Siobhan clung to Caspian’s leg, big brown eyes brimming. “Do you have to go? Can’t you just stay here?”
Caspian crouched down, ruffling his youngest brother’s curls. “If I could, I would. But I’ll write. Every week. Maybe even send a chocolate frog or two.”
Theo’s eyes widened. “U promise?”
“Promise.”
As the train released another puff of steam, Caspian’s father gently pried his mother’s hands away from his robes. “Let the boy breathe, Aoife. He’ll be fine.”
Finally free, Caspian adjusted his grip on his suitcase and took a deep breath. He boarded the train, passing compartment after compartment filled with friends laughing, talking, shouting greetings across the hallways. All of them seemed to belong already.
Then he noticed a girl sitting alone, her forehead against the window, waving one last goodbye. Her quiet felt like a refuge.
He paused, fingers lightly touching the doorframe.
“Hey,” He knocked lightly, “Mind if i sit here? Everywhere else is too loud.”
He sat across from her, sliding his trunk under the seat.

speaking: #936606Astrid had rested her head against the window, waving her mother goodbye, when her moment of peace was interrupted by a voice, "Hey, mind if I sit here? Everywhere else is too loud”; She thought she heard someone say.
Startled by the sudden interruption, she flinched slightly, before looking up, watching him as he made movements to sit across from her. It was a boy, slightly taller than her, with blonde hair and light freckles.
It took her a few seconds to process his words, and when she did, she realized she must seem very rude. Who takes that long to respond? She chastised herself inwardly, hoping he hadn't taken her silence the wrong way. She'd been hoping to make friends, and giving off the expression of someone who was rude, arrogant and uptight was definitely not what she wanted for her first chance to make friends at this place.
"Oh? Yeah, sure!" She replied, trying to sound as optimistic as she could, while also hoping it didn't come off as too obnoxious.
She watched as he settled his belongings under the seat, and made an attempt at a hopefully friendly conversation.
"My name is Astrid, what's yours?" She questioned, her voice sounding more relaxed now, a little smile coming upon her face. She always did love making friends, even if it made her a bit nervous. Even if she worried about doing or saying the wrong thing, the chance to connect with someone new still appealed to her.
Astrid sneaked a glance outside though the window, to see if her mother was still standing there, and when she made sure she wasn't, she looked back at the boy as he replied.

ℌe looked up when she spoke. "My name is Astrid, what's yours?"
His response came almost automatically. When she introduced herself, he didn’t hesitate. "Caspian Villin," he said with a confident smile, his voice smooth and steady. His confident smile was the kind that was meant to ease any lingering tension. It wasn’t that he felt nervous exactly—more like he was caught between wanting to say something and realizing he didn't know what exactly to say. "Nice to meet you, Astrid."
The train jolted slightly as it began to pick up speed, and he glanced out the window, watching the crowds on the platform shrink into the distance. He was still adjusting to the idea of being away from home. He was nervous, as he had never been so far away from home. He was also excited. I mean, he could get into all sorts of trouble now, without his parents stopping him.
He met her gaze again."So, uh, this your first time at Hogwarts? It’s mine." he said, trying to keep the conversation casual."I’m not sure what to expect. Everyone has their own version of the story, but no one can really tell you what it’s like until you’re there."
He tapped his fingers lightly and rhythmically on the suitcase. The train’s gentle sway matched the thoughts racing in his head. "The first thing I’m going to do is slip a dungbomb in one of the teacher’s rooms. Should be a solid way to start the year off."
“You?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. “What’s your plan?”

speaking: #936606Plan? plan; Astrid realized, was something she didn't have. Of course, she'd thought about Hogwarts before, planned out everything. But trouble? Trouble wasn't something she'd thought about doing at Hogwarts. She definitely wasn't the troublemaker type.
She shifted awkwardly, thinking of what to say; wondering if she was taking too long to respond again.
"Nice to meet you too, Felix. And oh, it's my first time too." She responded, her friendly smile never faltering. "I actually haven't thought too hard about what I wanna do when I get there, but I'll probably not be getting in trouble."
Astrid felt a little more at ease, looking at the way he seemed so comfortable and confident. She really did wish she would be able to come in her element, speak more freely but it would take some time. For now, she was in the awkward phase.
The train was moving at a fairly steady pace now, and the platform was no longer visible. She was officially off to Hogwarts. "I've heard about the houses here. Do you have any idea about how that sorting thing works? My dad told me about it, but I'm not so sure." Astrid said, trying to keep the conversation flowing. "Oh, and what house do you wanna ger into, when we get there?" She added. She was definitely getting more comfortable, starting to blabber; saying too many things at once.
She looked outside at the scenery outside the window as he answered.

ℭaspian smiled. "First time for both of us, then,” he said. “Makes it a little less intimidating, doesn’t it?”
He let out a soft laugh at her comment about not getting into trouble. “That’s fair. One of us should probably have a clean record.”
As the train picked up speed, he stretched his legs out a little under the seat and tapped his fingers against the edge of the window frame, his gaze trailing outside for a moment. The passing fields were a mix of golds and greens fading into the distance. Caspian shifted slightly in his seat. When Astrid mentioned the Sorting, his expression changed—his posture leaned in slightly, his voice dipped more thoughtful. Elbows resting on his knees, he looked ahead, but it was obvious his thoughts had turned inward.
“Yeah, the Sorting Hat. My mom said it reads your mind and sorts you based on your traits, or so the stories go. But my dad..”He grinned. “he says it just reads your mind and sends you to the first house you’re scared of.”
He leaned back in the seat. “As for what house I want to be in.” He paused, a thoughtful expression on his face. “I think i’d like to be a Ravenclaw, but i've also thought about slytherin.”
He shrugged.
He glanced at her again, studying her expression. “What about you?” he asked, curious.
“You got a house you’re hoping for? Or maybe one you don’t want?”

speaking: #936606Astrid looked back inside as he stopped speaking, paying him all her attention. "Yeah, it's nice to not be alone. I was so nervous" She admitted. It did help having someone to talk to, better that he was in the same year.
She leaned back in her seat as he talked about the sorting hat and houses, listening intently. Seeing him grin made her smile a little, too. "My mom told me the same thing about the hat reading your mind and traits, although I'm not too sure how that works." She paused. "A hat reading your mind? Sounds a bit excessive, even for us wizards"
As he asked her what house she'd want to be in, she hesitated, contemplating her answer.
She had thought about it, of course. Her parents were proud Gryffindors in their time, and she'd heard lots of praises for the house and it's values. "I wanna get into Gryffindor, I suppose. I've heard lots of praises for it, my parents were Gryffindors."
As Astrid replied, she couldn't help but think about the fact that he'd want to be in Slytherin. Of course. everyone has their personal preference, but she wouldn't want to be in the said house. Her parents didn't like the house, not that it was supposed to make any difference, except it did. "Any house would work for me, though. Maybe just not Slytherin" She added.

ℭaspian raised an eyebrow, just slightly, when she mentioned “just not Slytherin.” There was no offense in his expression, but something in his posture shifted—he straightened up a little, that casual lean becoming a shade more thoughtful. I mean, Slytherin was only his most favorite house of all time. Ravenclaw coming close in second.
“Right. Slytherin,” he echoed lightly.
He let the word settle in the air before turning his gaze back to her, his voice calm but edged with something drier. “Should I take that personally?” he asked, one brow raised.
Then he let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head as if brushing the thought off. “Kidding. Kind of.”
He shifted forward, elbows on his knees again.
“Don’t worry. If I end up there, I won’t start speaking in Parseltongue or hissing at the Gryffindors. At least not until the second week.”
Then, like the Caspian from a few minutes ago had never left, he flashed a half-smile, mock conspiratorial: “Also—if the Sorting Hat does read minds and puts you in Slytherin for thinking too hard about not wanting to be in Slytherin… I promise not to say I told you so.”
But if I do get into Slytherin... and you don’t... I still think we can be friends. Unless that’s also on your ‘not’ list?”

speaking: #936606Astrid tensed up a little, hearing his somewhat serious reply. She really hadn't expected him to take offence to that, neither had she meant for him to take it so personally.
As she was about to correct him, to justify that she hadn't meant it in a negative light, he continued speaking. "just kidding, kind of", was what he had said, but it definitely didn't feel like he was kidding.
Astrid sighed. It hadn't even been an hour and she had managed to offend another person.
"It's just a personal preference. I don't have anything against the house, you know? Don't take it too seriously."
She reasoned, but smiled. She had a serious problem of smiling without reason. Maybe she just loved being with people, or just the awkwardness that sometimes came with it.
Then, after a statement about Parseltongue and Gryffindor, it was as if he never became serious at all, not even for a moment.
"Ah, well, I'd hope I won't give you a chance to say 'I told you so'." She mused. "And I don't have a 'not' list. I mean, not for friends at least."
Astrid leaned back, yawning. The train was picking up speed, and she was getting increasingly relaxed. The scenery outside was seeming to get more and more beautiful as time passed. She had always loved the outside anyway.
"Tell me about yourself. You know, friends, favourites, family." She paused, passing him a mischievous grin. "But only if you won't take offence to that, of course"WC : 253 words

“Offence? Me?” he said, tilting his head like the very idea was ridiculous. “Never. I’m practically unoffendable. Except, apparently, when it comes to Slytherin.” His tone was light, teasing.
He leaned back against the seat, one arm draped casually along the edge of the window. “Alright then. Friends, favourites, family… Let’s see. Friends: still working on that,"
He thought for a moment before continuing. “Favourites? I like flying. Not that I’m any good at it yet, it looks more like falling with style when I try it. And sweets. Chocolate frogs, pumpkin pasties, treacle tarts—you get the picture. If it rots your teeth, I probably like it.”
At ‘family,’ his expression shifted, though only a touch—lighting up. “I’ve got three younger brothers. Which basically means I’ve spent half my life refereeing arguments about who stole whose toys. Mum hovers, Dad pretends not to, and the little one…” He let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head. “Let’s just say, if I was to get a howler demanding I get home immediately, it’ll be him.”
Then, leaning forward, elbows braced on his knees, his tone turned mock-serious. “Your turn. Friends, favourites, family. And don’t try skipping out—I’ll know.”Word count --> 211 words
