Setting: The Library
Time: Late morning on the 8th of April.
Outfit: Black flare pants, light blue sweater, brown hair in a messy bun.
Buried underneath a towering layer of books, stray leaves of papers, quills and far too many assignments, it was only the chocolate covered curls of a small first year that poked out. Head bent low, furiously scribbling in a book with such a messy script that the girl in any usual mood would have been positively appalled, sat Amelia Lerelle. The usually immaculate appearance of Amelia, seemed to have disappeared into a misty haze along with parts of the girl’s sanity.

Snow could have been floating down from the sky covering the world in a gorgeous icing sugar. A chestnut brown dragon could have been flying through the sky of the castle. The minister for magic could have been walking towards the castle that very second. But, alas, Amelia wouldn’t have noticed for the last time she had looked out the window was two hours ago she had stalked out of the noise of the Hufflepuff common room to the Library, or at least it’s intended bliss.

It was a rather infuriating fact for the young Hufflepuff that she had decided to spend her past few days enjoying the weather, freedom and, of course, magic that Hogwarts offered her, instead of studying and preparing for her subjects as she should have been. As one might expect, it was quite soon that the young girl had to bear the consequences. With still two rather lengthy homework assignments due and a great handful of studying to do, calling the first year stressed would be a great understatement.

It was now that the Hufflepuff glared at a paragraph from her Transfiguration textbook, a rather confusing concept, that the girl had read at least three times. It would have been most logical for the small girl to take a break, however such an idea would have been dismissed before a second of persuasion could have been uttered. Flipping the page in exasperation at what she now considered a poorly written sentence, she took her quill, ink and paper and began to write her essay with great studiousness. Nose almost touching the paper, her pink lips pursed with a focused sort of glare and a pale hand writing so very quickly, the small first year could be found.

Graci continually tried to find places of quiet throughout the year, with varying degrees of success. It usually either had too many people seeking the same thing she was, a new friend, or too many distractions.

The library was no better. Despite being a place of mandatory quiet it was no less distracting for her. Because, in all truth, she could lose herself in her mind there for hours. Basking in the deliciously golden rays of sunlight, or get too distracted by the particles in the light beams to focus.

But it wasn't the worst place to be distracted by, and the transfiguration homework wasn't going to do its self. Hm, I wonder if there's a spell for that... ARGH! Must... focus...

She knew it was a helpless thought, but she was determined to finish the assignment so she stopped worrying about it.

As she looked through the stacks she saw a head peeking out from behind a stack of books. Over the months she had developed a nasty habit of studying better with a partner. Or that was what she liked to tell herself.

Should I bother her? She looks so peaceful... maybe.... Ah, no, I shouldn't interrupt her concentration.

That was Graci's thinking, at least, till she accidentally bumped the stack of books and she froze. It didn't fall over but she stood by it, silently staring hoping the girl behind it didn't notice.

Amelia’s blue eyes were so focussed on an infuriating paragraph that she took not even the tiniest bit of notice of the girl who was coming towards her. Had Amelia seen the friendliness on the girl’s face, her reaction might have been less sharp. Yet, the mountain of homework the first year had been given had caused her temper to flare.

Amelia viciously scribbled yet another sentence, hoping that she could finish her homework soon, and finally be able to relax. Surely it would only take another hour! Putting her quill down, Amelia looked up just in time to see one of her piles of books topple over. Most fell splattering off the table, a few landing with a flop on top of her parchment, one exceptionally rude one knocked over her ink, causing it to splatter a little over her hard work. In all honesty, the effects of collapsing books weren’t really that bad and the ink had only blurred one sentence and smudged a little of the paragraph, but Amelia was absolutely infuriated by such a disruption and mess.

Amelia’s blue eyes flashed up in anger towards the culprit. Her voice, filled with frustration and a cold sarcasm, echoed slightly through the library. “Do you mind? Unlike you, I am trying to do something, and I would rather not being buried by books.” Glaring, Amelia pushed her ink pot away from the parchment with an exaggerated movement. “Well, are you going to clean this up or not?” she snapped in pure frustration.

With an annoyed sniff, Amelia brushed at her paper as if to exaggerate the marks that had been made. Amelia knew she would probably regret her rude words later, even if it was in the silence of her dormitory late that evening. And yet she didn’t care a great deal about civility in that moment, only finishing her work and now having this mess cleaned up promptly.

Graci flinched at the girls harsh words, already scrambling to pick back up the mess she had made. Darn my clumsiness. It makes no friends, only accidents.

"Oh gosh, I am so so so sorry. I wasn't trying to... sorry." She was flushed, embarrassed and ashamed for ruining her work. Though not too terribly. Definitely not enough to warrant such a strong reaction.

"And, I mean, who are you to say I'm not doing anything. The whole world doesn't revolve around you, and just because I slightly inconvenienced you does not mean you can talk to me like that. I really am sorry, though."

Graci didn't know where that came from. It was completely valid, but... very uncharacteristic of her. Not the apologizing at the end, that was predictable, but calling her out like that. This girl could have been the nicest person known to mankind and just caught in a bad spot for all she knew.

I mean, rather unlikely, but you never know.

She was mentally rolling her eyes, trying so hard to keep a calm facade. It was working surprisingly well, especially considering that she had just been snapped at for something she didn't even purposefully do.

Amelia should have taken back her words when Graci hurriedly attempted to remove the mess. Well, she should never have said them in the first place. She most certainly should have taken it all back when the girl started profusely apologizing. That’s if you could take words back. But, even an apology would have been better than the frown of disapproval that Amelia gave her.

Guilt clouded Amelia’s thoughts, causing her to give a small grimace. There was no reason to react so dramatically, even if her work had been important and effortful. Perhaps she was the one who ought to be apologizing. Opening her mouth, an apology forming, Amelia had almost begun, but the girl spoke once more. It seemed her opinion on the situation was beginning to change a little too.

The girl’s next words came forcefully down on Amelia, and she looked up, her face a blotchy red of frustration. Not only was she in a horrid mood, but once someone started, or continued an argument, she wasn’t going to stop. Amelia spat out her words at a rather embarrassing volume, not considering what she was saying, “Who am I? I’m the one that was busily studying, while you lazily flit around bothering people. Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to continue my work because you just ruined it. Is that ok? Thanks!”

Midway through her tirade, tears begun to fall, clouding her vision. Frustration mounted now, why did she have to cry whenever she was angry? It was plain embarrassing! Scowling as best she could, she wiped her face. She paused in her attempt to collect her books, of which there were far too many, to look and gauge the girl’s expression. Somewhere, a little deeper than where her rudeness had come, she wished she could have just accepted the girl’s apology.

Graci knew as soon as the word had left her mouth that she shouldn't have said it all. Just because someone was rude to her did not give her the right to be nasty right back. She was still learning, but still. Hurting people, especially with words, was something she was trying to put a complete stop to. Not hurt, exactly, but frustrated, maybe?

Learning couldn't excuse everything, but this specific instance it could. Pettiness was excusable occasionally. "Well, I would like to point out that I was neither 'lazily flirting around' nor bothering people. In fact, I was not purposely bother you either. But I feel like I have made it abundantly clear that I'm sorry. And I'm sorry for being rude to you as well. It was not my place to say that."

Apologizing was very on brand for her, and she was very used to it, clumsy girl she was. It really is a curse. Stupid uncoordinated limbs.

Less than positive encounters weren't very usual to Graci. Not like she was uncultured or couldn't take the occasional snobby brat {not that she thought Amelia was one} but she really did despise having someone not like her. She didn't feel as though she was the kind of person to be despised. Well, that was a bit strong of a word, but it was true.

Tears trickling down the glaring first year’s face, Amelia tried to contain her frustration once more. It was completely unfair that this had to happen today. Why couldn’t this girl have knocked someone else’s books? Or at least done it on a different day? Maybe then they could have been friends. And most of all, why did we have to get into an argument? It was completely unfair. Unfair, unfair, unfair. Amelia couldn’t help ask herself the final question, the one that was entirely her fault, why couldn’t she have simply accepted the girls apology?

Sniffing haughtily, as she listened to the other girl, Amelia began to pile up her books in an attempt at orderliness, and so she could stalk off in a moments time. Unfortunately, doing so is quite difficult when your reading material is half the library, and you are trying to look dignified while crying and glaring! So, all in all, Amelia was failing at each and every one of her missions.

The tone of frustration in Amelia’s returning voice was mounted by a another topple of tears now. She paused a second, feeling slightly guilty at the mature words being spoken compared to Amelia’s childish ones. Lacking a good comeback, she merely snapped back, “It doesn’t matter what you were doing, and that your lying to yourself now. You still knocked over my books and your still here being a pain.” Her voiced had reached a unusual sharpness. “So, if you don’t mind, could you… annoy someone else!”

The crying had stopped now, leaving her face a blotchy red. An embarrassing blotchy red. The pause in the tears was a good thing, but the apologies of this girl were bearing deep into Amelia. With a haughty glare, Amelia once more began collecting her things, completely ignoring the other girl. She had decided one thing. If she was going to forfeit her homework space, she wouldn’t be leaving without… a slightly dramatic exit.

Graci had met very few people who had irked her such as this. Not that she disliked this girl... but that was exactly it. There was nothing wrong with her, but a bad first impression never settled well. She'd had few bad first impressions, one being the girl in potions, and the other that boy who threw snowballs at her. She'd never gotten him back for that... Oh well, too late, I suppose.

She didn't particularly care that the girl was glaring. It was the crying that worried her. Graci, too, cried when angry, but that didn't mean she liked being the cause of someone's tears! No matter how unpleasant they were towards her.

"I actually try to make a point of not lying to myself. Maybe some denial, but not lying. I have a conscience far too good at its job. And don't mind me. Just trying to apologize like someone with decency, I didn't know that was being a pain. But so be it."

Rude people were not something she regularly made time for, if ever. It is decided, if someone ever knocks over my books, it'll be fine. No worries. Gosh, I'm so rude. And petty.

Pettiness wasn't something she particularly liked, either. But here she stood, thinking unreasonably petty thoughts, going to walk away. Though, this girl would probably have something more to say. That was how conversations worked, after all.

A tiny spring of tears trickled down Amelia Lerelle’s face, leaving it toned red and blotchy. She attempted to wipe them away, yet they continued to fall, simply leaving her flushed skin as a stark contrast to her usual pale features. Why did she have to cry? Why?! As the gryffindoor spoke, in an almost civilized manner, Amelia felt frustration pound through her chest. It was unfair! All of this was unfair.

The cause for their argument was slowly being forgotten by the Hufflepuff, yet her frustration had only become more heated over the continuance of their dispute. Being the somewhat stubborn girl she was, Amelia was determined to ‘win’ the argument. She wouldn’t be the one to leave. She would be the one to continue on with her homework, in the place she had sat at all morning.

Turning to the other girl with a haughty sniff, still overcome by the intruding tears which were now lessening, she waited. Part of her felt undeniably guilty at her childlike behavior in comparison to the far more mature acting girl, yet the agitation was blocking her view to think clearly. She returned, sarcasm smirking through her tone, “Good for you, but you might have to try harder next time!” She snapped, her temper bubbling viciously, refusing to let her calm down. “Now if you don’t mind, I have an essay due tomorrow, so go rant about your issues to someone else!” Her voice had become higher, and was at the volume where people could hear it a little too much.

Truthfully, Amelia hardly ever got this upset in public, let alone spoke in such a rude manner towards other people. The overload of homework piled into her little pool of troubles had, quite frankly, tipped her over the edge. The first year knew that as soon as a departure occurred all she would want to do would be apologize, and start fresh with the girl. If the other girl had of started screaming, Amelia’s insolence might have been excused, but as it was she had acted in a manner extraordinarily polite under the circumstances.

The glare still knotting at Amelia’s features, she grabbed a rather large history of magic book and flipped it open to a random page. Making a great show of ignoring the other girl, she began to read the page slowly. The question was if Graci would say anything more, anything Amelia couldn’t ignore. Or would the girl be left alone with her homework and the guilt that would come very soon?

Graci looked away at the sight of the girl's tears, both because she felt bad at being the majority of that cause, but also because if it were her she would prefer if her dignity was preserved. A hand went to one of the small braids she had put in her hair that morning, yanking at one of the little ribbons at the end, looking like thin red highlights. Now, they didn't feel quite so fun, the feeling of a dark stain of anger penetrating her heart and mind making everything seem a little duller.

Her stubborn-ness was actively warring with her instincts to apologize profusely and flee. Her stubborn streak had been victorious the whole conversation, and it was too late to back out without seeming... well, so much like her usual, compliant self. She was sick of this persistent anger, an ugly, ugly feeling no one liked to experience despite its frequency.

Well, it seems I've picked a fight with the sarcastic, haughty type. Joy. The urge to roll her eyes was strong, taking quite the feat of self control to push back, though she didn't know how it was managed, on her part. "Oh, so now I'm the one ranting about my issues? You're border-line yelling at me." She frowned, stepping back slightly as though she could literally distance herself from the situation.

Graci was, to say the least, not great at arguing. Words seemed to disintegrate in her mind as soon as she had to respond, good come-backs being formed days later. A good trait, she figured, in most situations, but not when being unfairly yelled at. Okay, sternly talked to. It was a library, after all, and few had the gall to truly yell in such a serene space. Graci abhorred yelling with her whole being, not that anyone in her family was particularly loud, but occassionally a stern talking to with a higher decibel than normal got a point further than any punishment.

A slight look of what could only be described as resentment crossed her face. While she was one for ignoring problems on the whole, disrespect in that form was another thing entirely. "Well then, if that's the case, have fun at your pity party. I hope your essay gets high marks, at least." She didn't wish that in the slightest, but sometimes it could diffuse the anger in her mind. Well wishes, that was. Taking the time to remember that this other girl was human quite like herself and this anger had probably been building for a long time now. Alas, Graci found it quite hard to focus on that and take a moment to breathe.

She turned on her heel, walking away with a disgruntled huff, her day officially ruined.
