✽Dear Mikey,
Yeah. My dad didn't used to be like this, but ever since my mother basically abandoned us for her work, well, he changed. He used to be carefree and easygoing, but I guess a lot has changed since I was eight.
The concert does sound amazing! I hope to someday convince my dad or maybe even my aunt to a concert and some muggle shops, just so we can all have a break. Though if we did go to a concert, I probably would have to listen to all the songs first. Wizard music is okay, but from what I've heard as far as muggle music, it's so much better.
I wouldn't be surprised if sneezing Parseltongue is a thing. There's a lot of interesting magical things I've even just heard of recently and I've lived with magic around me all my life!
I will probably write way too much while you're at camp. This place can get lonely sometimes. Especially when everyone is off doing their own thing. Maybe I'll actually be able to convince my father to allow me to go to camp next year! That would be fun!

Dear Avery,
Its strange how a letter can sound like a voice you haven't heard in a while. Yours arrived the other morning and I sat at the kitchen table reading it, with one sock on and spilling cereal on my shirt. I’m not sure why I’m telling you that but I already started writing so why not.
I wish I could change your dads mind. I’m going to keep my fingers crossed hoping he does but I am glad you get the time with family. That’s important too. Perhaps next year, maybe? I hope so, anyway. I should want to believe stubborn fathers can still change their mind. Stranger things have occurred. Like me passing Potions.
I do understand what you're saying about your dad changing. Humans do that when something's broken. They withdraw or freeze, and it's not always fair, but it happens. It takes courage to just keep being you in a house that sometimes seems like standing in the shadows of what used to be. I see that in you. You remain sweet and funny and smart even when things aren't exactly fair so. That matters. That matters a lot.
And just wait, one day we will go to a concert together, and I'll tell you that it's okay to belt out the words at the top of your lungs even when you have no idea what they're singing about. We'll choose a band with good music and bad fashion and ridicule the lyrics and then secretly adore them.
And hey if you ever need to be reminded that you're not the only one in all this, just remember there's a boy in Liverpool thinking of you and hoping you're alright. Your not alone.
Always,
Mikey
PS. Say high to Dylan for me.

✽Dear Mikey,
I received your letter a couple days ago. Your letter made me smile so much that Dylan attempted to take it out of my hands and read whatever I had found inside. Luckily the only part he saw was the part where you said hi to him before I grabbed it back.
Dylan says hi back and also said he would track down and find whatever letters you’ve sent me if I didn’t put it in here. I know he’s only joking, but I wonder how he would have tried to find them. He’s been busy hanging out with our grandfather. Probably making up for lost time.
I can’t wait for the day when we get to go to a concert together! Becoming just a normal person for even just a few hours sounds like a relief I’ve never felt in my life.
Same goes to you. I’m always here if you need me. Don’t hesitate to write. Especially when you feel alone.

Dear Avery,
I’ve read your letter at least twenty times. There’s something about seeing your handwriting that’s like having your voice in the room for a few minutes, and I didn’t realize how much I needed that until now.
Tell Dylan he’s got competition. If he keeps trying to intercept my letters, I’ll have to start writing decoys just to throw him off. Something dramatic and mysterious like “TOP SECRET: Confidential.” KodoPodo sends his greetings in his usual fashion, which means knocking over a stack of my dad’s papers and looking proud of it.
I really liked what you said about concerts. The idea of us just being regular people for a bit no spells, no family expectations, no looming homework, it sounds like actual magic. I want that too. I want a night like that with you someday. Preferably with overpriced food and one of those weird light up sticks people wave around for no reason.
Camp is doing to be here soon, and to be honest, I’m both excited and a little nervous. I keep flipping through the itinerary and wondering if I’m about to accidentally sign up for magical goat herding or something. Still, it’s a chance to do something different, maybe meet new people, but part of me just wishes you were going too. It would be way better with you there.
And thank you for always writing back, for always being yourself. You’ve made this summer feel so much less lonely.
Always,
Mikey

✽Dear Mikey,
Your letter made me laugh every time I read it. So far, Dylan has learned his lesson about sneaking up on me and stealing letters, but someday we may have to trick him back. He has a way of always teasing me even if he doesn’t know what your letters say.
With this letter, I come with good news! After a lot of begging and even dragging my aunt into the conversation, my father finally allowed me to attend summer camp!
I couldn’t believe what he had said when he first said it. I can’t even express how happy and excited I am in just this letter. It will be a joy getting to see you in person!

Summer Revelations

Dear Avery,
I nearly choked on my breakfast when I read your letter. My dad thought perhaps I was cursed or something the way I gasped. You're going to camp?! I still can't believe it. I was so afraid of being at camp without hearing your voice or seeing your handwriting for a week or so, and now… now I don't have to miss you like that anymore. Now you'll be there. In the same spot. At the same time. Isn't that magic?
Let your aunt know she's a miracle worker. If she ever needs help with something, carrying her groceries, holding off a gnome attack, anything, I'm her guy. I don't even know where to begin. Should I be afraid that you're going to win at every activity that's ever been invented? Probably. Should I be afraid that we're going to laugh so hard in activities that we'll be cursed by a counselor? For sure. Should I be hyped in spite of it all? absolutely.
The thing is, summer's been sort of odd. Not horrible, it's just not nearly as much fun as I was expecting. It's great to get your letter, don't get me wrong, but having the possibility of seeing you again in person put things into perspective. I'd been sort of looking forward to camp in a general, fuzzy sense. Now it seems real. Like something wonderful is going to happen right up ahead.
And for the record, I'm going to do it to the fullest. Star gazing, games, just sitting around chatting about nothing. All of it. Particularly that one. See you soon!
Mikey

✽Dear Mikey,
I still can’t believe my father said yes. I think
I’ve replayed that memory at least five or six times a day since it happened. I’m so glad that I’ll get to see you face to face again. Things have been pretty lonely here and a lot has happened. Especially something big I’ll have to tell you sometime.
Yesterday was a bit of a rough day. I found out the real reason my mother never let me come back home until now and it’s not great. It’s too much to explain in this letter, so I’ll try and catch you up when we get some free time at camp. Let’s just say that the news didn’t settle well. I pretty much disappeared and I guess fell asleep in the forest before someone found me and put me in my bed. I woke up there, so I still don’t know what really happened.
I’ll let my aunt know! She’ll be pleased to know that her persuading was for a good cause! I feel like summer camp is going to be a good thing. Especially with you there. I can’t wait to spend time with you there! See you then!

Dear Avery,
I just can't get camp out of my head now. I'm simply running round my room thinking that I'm waiting for a train to come into my wardrobe. It's silly how nervous I am. You're actually coming. I just keep repeating it over and over in my brain like I'm going to curse it if I even mention it out loud. But it's real, and it's coming soon.
I understand that a lot has happened, and I kind of felt that through the way you wrote. That experience with your mum is horrible, and I'm sorry that you had to go through it alone. I'm relieved that someone found you, though, but I wish it could have been there. I would've sat with you until you were better again. Or at least until you were angry enough to send me away. It must be so strange to not know what happened and loose time like that.
Also, nice little thought: would you like me to grab something from the Muggle world when I visit you at camp? Something weird or practical. A book? Quavers? Quirky glitter pen? I'd be delighted to. Might even wrap it like a gift, if I can find my dad's remaining birthday wrapping paper.
Always,
Mikey

✽Dear Mikey,
I’m the same as you! There have been many instances that Dylan or even my aunt have found me just staring at the wall. I’m starting to think that they believe something’s wrong with the me even though they know it’s probably just about camp.
I wish you were there too. It would have made everything easier to take in, but you’re lucky you weren’t there. I was a mess and probably would have said something I would’ve regretted. I don’t want to hurt you like that.
You got my attention at books. It’s funny how I’m a Gryffindor, yet I’ll read a book over a near-death experience any day. I’ve only read a couple muggle books before (thanks to Lya), so maybe pick your favorite? If we’re doing gifts, what’s your favorite kind of wizard in treat?

Dear Avery,
I read your letter this morning sitting at the bottom of the stairs with KodoPodo wrapped around my ankles like a little shadow. I swear he knows when I’m reading something from you because he always chooses that moment to act like a nuisance in solidarity. I'm starting to think he wants to be pen pals too.
The bit about you staring at the wall and your aunt thinking something’s wrong made me laugh. Not because it’s funny exactly, but because… same. My dad caught me sitting in the pantry last night, just holding a spoon and thinking about camp. He just blinked and left me to it. I think he’s learned not to ask.
Also, I’d love it if you brought me something from the wizarding world. Anything at all really, How about a surprise. I’ve picked out a book for you. It's a favorite, dog eared in all the right places. I hope you don’t mind if it smells a bit like bakery sugar and ink. It’s well traveled.
Oh! One other thing, are you going to that wedding? The one they sent out invitations for. You probably already know which one I mean. I’ve never been to a wizard wedding before, and my dad said I can go and stay with my aunt in London. Anyway, if you are going, maybe we can try to spot each other there. And if not, camp is still soon and that’s what I’m really counting down for.
Can’t wait to see you again.
Mikey
