For Aodhan, desperation was not a foreign concept.

Although he openly insisted on remaining cerebral, on maintaining an emotional disconnect from his surroundings, this did nothing in reality to stop the bubbling and festering of inner feelings. Such as boredom, and the faint sense of being contained. Oh, how he despised both of them, yet on one fine Friday afternoon, they seemed to insist on haunting him to death. Antsy. That was the word—everything was making him so antsy.

It served as motivation to escape the Gryffindor common room, which was filled with more students than usual doing... whatever it was they did after classes. He was sure it was nothing interesting, considering how many were nose deep in coursework, while the others seemed content just slinking and chatting about. It took away from the usual coziness, and brought a level of claustrophobia that the boy simply could not handle at that moment in time. He wanted to be out, free, perhaps catering to one of his newfound hobbies. He wanted to be entertained. He wanted to stop feeling so damn antsy.

Why was his brain so driven to antagonize him? Just yesterday, he was completely and utterly at peace with listening to music from his recently purchased radio, and making shadow puppets on the walls. Perhaps the knowledge of being trapped in the castle was getting to him; the winter cold had reached new lows, after all, enough to chill anyone to the bone.

He was of course fool enough to attempt playing outside just earlier in the week. To say the least, he returned with chattering teeth and the subtle worry his lips had turned blue.

So, with nervous energy thrumming right underneath his skin, the youth went on an impromptu stroll through the castle. His sketchbook was in his hand as a precaution, the subtle hope that maybe, just maybe, something would catch his eye and inspiration would strike. Something would entertain him enough to at least draw enough to satiate his desire for amusement.

Eventually, he reached the study room, and it was at that point Aodhan knew he'd hit rock bottom.

When was the last time he even visited this spot? Probably not more than once since the beginning of the term, which was approximately four whole months ago. Still... he was desperate, and it was worth a shot, and it couldn't possibly hurt him. How lame.

The boy swallowed his reservations and entered the somewhat unfamiliar space. It was as he silently prayed for a hint of anything that he spotted a mess of blonde hair.

Almost instantly, his expression lit up, just for him to quickly hold his tongue. The other boy's name was there, ready to be shouted for all to hear, but they seemed focused on second glance. Very focused. Homework, perhaps? Realizing a better way to go about this, Aodhan moved silently with a kind of practiced ease, keeping to the more dimmed parts of the room as he stalked over. Then, once he was finally close enough...

"WHAT'S UP, LIVALICIOUS?!" he boomed, situated far too close to Oliver's ear for such nonsensical behavior. It also caused the few heads present in the room to turn, but the young wizard seemed not to care. He was far too invested in annoying catching up with his friendly acquaintance. As such, he smiled wide. "Surprised to see me? It's not often I grace a hellscape like this with my presence."

It had been no surprise that Oliver once again found himself in the study room after classes Friday, after all he spent most of his time studying in various places. Wherever he could find some peace and quiet at least. Be it the library, or the study room. He found that most of the people that annoyed him avoided such places. They were loud, and frankly obnoxious. He would much rather spend his time in quiet with his books. Reading up on the history of the magical world. Though he should most likely switch his focus to charms, or defense against the dark arts. One of his 'lower' grade classes.

Oliver finished his paragraph for the essay, and set that parchment aside closing the history books for now, and opening up the charms book. Reading from the chapter he left on and taking out his charms classwork. Getting it done day it was assigned was one of his favorite things to do. That way he didn't have to stress about it at all for the rest of the week. When his classmates were rushing to get it done, making it so there work wasn't top quality. He could only laugh at them, they had plenty of chance to get there work done. And they didn't, it was there own fault really. He didn't help them, they had a chance to help themselves and didn't.

So focused in the studying, and the peace he finally managed to obtain. It had been bound that it would be interrupted. Perhaps by the worst one. Aodhan Shaw- the loudest and most obnoxious one of them all. Perhaps more so then Novalie. At the very least, Novalie only called him 'Ollie' even that he didn't like that. But it was better then "The hell did you call me?" Oliver said harshly as he whipped his head around to glare at the Gryffindor. His stupid naivety had allowed him to think that 'Liv' was the worst it could get. "Livalicious?" He'd tried to scare him, he knew that. He wasn't stupid. It was predictable that Aodhan had failed. He was born for Gryffindor. Bravery house. If there was an obnoxious house he was sure Aodhan would be there.

One could say 'surprised' that one being Aodhan, Oliver's words would be pissed off. So much so that he accidently snapped the quill he'd been writing his answers with in his grip. To much to ask of course it had been, to spend some time by himself, relaxing with his homework. "Why are you here?" He cut straight to the point. The very thing he tried to avoid, being annoyed, had sniffed him out like a hound dog. "The study room doesn't seem like your normal grounds." Perhaps a child's play pen yes, Honestly he wasn't sure if the boy could even read enough to study.

"I wouldn't say graced." He said with an eye roll. Crused in a word. "You do know this place is supposed to be quite?" He couldn't help but point out, eyes drifting to the other people that had chosen to be in the study room, there peace interrupted by Aodhan yelling about. If he was a nicer man, he would apologize. If Aodhan was anyone else, he would apologize for his actions. But in doing so he would be taking responsibility for him, and that just could not be done. He looked back at Aodhan. "Are you capable of doing that?" He asked. Fearing he knew the answer was no.

It was honestly, truly such a shame for Liv that Aodhan was so... impervious to other people's words. Actually, perhaps not impervious. Selective? That worked better. The gryffindor was incredibly selective in his hearing, a kinder way of saying he only heard whatever it was he wished to hear at that moment. So of course he chose to ignore the other's rather harsh form of questioning, and instead balanced on the balls of his feet, smiling wide and impishly.

"Why are you here?"

Ah, except for that.

For a second, he hummed while pondering a funny response. Making his companion laugh would clearly be an impossible task; just from Liv's demeanor in their past encounters and the... apparent quill breaking, it was clear interacting would purely be for Aodhan's own amusement. Therefore, what would make him giggle the most today? What would spark his joy and save him from the mental hell that was dopamine deprivation? Without getting killed in the process, of course. Seriously, who snapped a quill like that?

On the outside, the young wizard was not entirely there. Without knowing any better, it would be easy to claim his expression was rather dopey, like he was daydreaming midway. Like he was trapped in his own form of candy land. However, this was not fully the case, made evident only by the way he laughed once Liv finished speaking.

"I'm so, so sorry, my grumpy friend, but 'quiet' is not in my vocabulary. Besides, I sensed you! Your subconscious was screaming for help—it said, 'Please! I'm so bored, Liv is killing me here! Save me, my future King!' And voila! Technically, that makes me your knight in shining armor." He was definitely projecting onto the slytherin boy in some way, shape, or form, as they hadn't seemed bored in the slightest, but that was a detail he would never willingly bring to light.

Sticking true to his claim of "saving" the poor kid, he instantly got to work on breaching their sense of privacy. It was a quick peek over Liv's shoulder anyhow, a tiny scan of the laid out studying material. Before any saving could be done, he needed to see the problem to diagnose it. Thankfully, this was very much within his job description.

"Oh! Charms! That's my favorite! Professor Fresnel is the most fun teacher I've ever—wait," Aodhan cut himself off almost as quickly as he rambled, chestnut eyes narrowing in scrutiny, "Didn't... this was just assigned today. Are you a loser? No wonder you need me."

Then, like a greatly disappointed father, he sighed and shook his head back and forth. Academics and their silly time managements skills. Ridiculous.

Nope, nope, nope. Would anyone blame Oliver if he tried the killing curse then and there? A lot of people actually. It was an 'unforgivable' for a reason. He had enough shame brought to the Armani name already without being a felon. He was not a felon, and he for sure was not this boys 'friend' just thinking about that made him want to gag. (he was in fact, over dramatic.) He just talked on and on and on. Never stopping. This was a nightmare come true really. Trying to study, and being interrupted.

Oliver took a deep breath, the people in the room had plenty of annoyance with Aodhan's unprompted appearance. Like a bird in water. "Firstly, I am not your friend." Oliver started soon as Aodhan finished talking (again, another surprise here) holding one finger up, the start of his 'list'. "Secondly, I am not bored. My subconscious is not bored, I was having fun until you showed up." He told him with a huff, holding up his second finger. And again holding up his third finger as he spoke. "Thirdly, You are not my 'knight in shining armor'" The audacity of this kid. "I don't need one."

Oliver having made his point clear as day, or as much as one could hope. Got back to his work, grabbing a new quill, dipping it in ink, and writing out what just had to be the best answer. Of course, the only answer. And the correct one. When he might as well have felt a dragon breathing down his neck, breaching all seance of his personal space. He put his quill down and was about to speak up, 'why yes, it is charms. Do you want a cookie for your superb observation skills?' Of course he would not mean any of it, a baby could identify his work as charms, a newborn even.

Again, the killing curse was sounding far to appealing. (overdramatic much?)

Oliver did not want to kill the boy, just- shut him up forever a while. "No, not a looser." He spoke after a moment of silence. That moment had been Oliver gathering all his will power not to again snap his fresh quill. No one had dared to call him a 'looser' before. Let alone for keeping up on his work. "It was assigned today, congratulations for paying that much attention in class." Oliver said, not at all meaning his words. Oliver then got back to doing it, also wanting to finish it today. Though the odds of that seemed bleak. "I like to do it, and like not having anything to worry about." Not that he owed the boy any sort of explanation.

Depending on the perspective taken, discovering what made another person tick was an art form. There were various intricacies to found, in how their tone of voice may shift, in the ways their brow could furrow and lips could purse, in the defensive persona they may or may not adopt. And for Aodhan, the youth was slowly becoming absorbed in picking apart Liv's mannerisms.

The nickname usage was blatant and easy, a quick way into the other's head, and he took note of the breath work surrounding their response. A deep breath here, a rough exhale there. The slytherin boy even made a point of clarifying their lack of cordial relations. Oh, did this guy really think Aodhan cared? Or that he wouldn't push the topic until it couldn't be pushed anymore? Liv should have merely kept his mouth shut, instead of unknowingly handing over so many bullets just begging to be used. Then again, it was highly possible they were lacking in self-preservation if "enjoying studying" was anything to go by.

"You're so strong, Sir Grumps, truly," the young wizard responded cheerfully, and fully leaned into the act, "Putting on that brave face to seem more put together than you are. But it's okay. You don't have to worry anymore, my dear comrade."

Was it likely that he would run through an entire page's worth of synonyms for "friend" this evening? Yes, it was very likely. Would that put a stop to his shenanigans? Absolutely not.

Speaking of, the taller's reaction to being called "loser" forced him to actively bite his tongue to prevent himself from giggling, and this was especially the case upon hearing the sarcastic follow-up. If anything, the entire situation reminded him vaguely of Waffles, who had been just as much of a hard ass during the first year boat rides. Although, at least that blonde could muster up a laugh when the time called for it.

"Y'know what? You're right, you're not a loser. At least, not a regular one. Someone like you is more like a hyper loser, right? A super, ultra, omega loser. A premium loser."

After speaking, Aodhan carefully brought out his wand and used it to draw a backwards 'G' into the air. Right before completing the movement, he proceeded to whisper a gentle "Reparo," pointing the spell directly onto the cast aside remains of the broken quill. He watched as it quickly began to mend itself, a pleased expression on his face at his own success.

"Look at that! A loser like you getting helped out by a winner like me. The natural order of things," he chirped, soon returning his wand to its rightful place within his robes. Then, he sighed thoughtfully and shifted, aiming to rest his arm directly on top of Liv's head. "Seriously though, don't you have other stuff you wanna do first? Personally, I need a break from classes before I can do any homework. Locking in so much can't possibly be good for you, bro."

Aodhan knew he was absolutely correct. His mother often carried the issue of always going above and beyond, even at the risk of her own health and enjoyment of life. Just the thought of being like her in any capacity, under stress and returning home completely and utterly drained, threatened to send a shiver down his spine.

Not that Liv was anywhere close to that extreme, as the other was simply exercising proper time management. But still.

Oliver knew he was strong, of course he was. Call it favorable genes or whatever. He'd always been a little bit stronger then other's his age, and sometimes those older then him as well. Gave him a bit of an ego boost. If he wasn't going to lie. And he wasn't going to. Aodhan's words, they made him feel, well, happy. Praise from him of all people. He didn't think it would come easily. Even if it was a mock. Then, everything crashed down. The words that followed the next dreaded nickname. 'sir grumps'. God. When would it stop?

Dreaded Aodhan, accused dear Oliver of putting on a brave face. What defined a brave face? It was simply Oliver's normal fearless face. Was the Gryffindor accusing him of being not put together? He was put together. Of course he was. Put together that is. Why wouldn't he be? He wasn't worried about it. And of course Aodhan was accusing him of not being put
together. Why in the world would people even thing Oliver wasn't? He was fine, always was. Never wasn't fine. It had come close during the fuckcing sorting, and the fucking hat placing him wrong. Of course, Oliver kept it together. With his face, but not a mask that he wore to hide things behind. Oliver did not wear masks. A cowards move. Like a fake smile, his bravery was far from fake. Then the asshole had the audacity to try calling him 'comrade'? What? Oliver didn't understand any of this, why he was saying this to him. Why he had chosen him of all people to annoy. "I am very put together."

Oliver had told Aodhan simply, then he tried to get back to his work. And was just getting back in his mode. When the worst thing Oliver had ever heard came from Aodhan's shit filled mouth. "I'm sorry?!" He wasn't he was just completely shocked at what he was just called. A super, duper, mega, something or other looser? "Are you five? What type of insult is that?" Clearly not one that would bother Oliver. Not at all. He was so unbothered in fact, Oliver tried to ignore him once again. Do his work. Get it done. Turn it in. And get a good grade. "I need you to leave now. Your distracting me." That and he couldn't stand Aodhan's guts. But Oliver had more control to say that out loud.

He was sure that he had felt a muscle in his eye twitch at the show of power, this being Aodhan's little repero stunt. Fixing the quill. Oliver didn't need. He was rich, most likely, unlike Aodhan. No way someone from money could come out so- so- Aodhan. He did not ever need help from lesser beings then himself, Oliver pushed the quill off the table, as a show that he didn't need the easily replaceable object. And perhaps that he to was a five year old. "Parlor pony now Aodhan?" He said not looking up from his work.

He let out a huff when asked about something called 'locking in'? Another mock surely. "I would rather get this out of the way now then last second," Oliver was doing Aodhan a huge favor, giving an reason for his 'madness' at all. He was really thinking about just getting up and walking away. To the Slytherin common room perhaps. Keep Aodhan away for at least a little while. "I do the 'fun' things, like painting, once I do my work. Like a reward. Understand?"

"Are you five? What type of insult is that?"

"The type you care about, obviously," he quipped back, greatly amused by the entire encounter. For a second, he wondered if the other boy was simply born this grumpy. He could imagine a small, blonde baby with furrowed eyebrows, crying about "bad nicknames," schoolwork, and whatever else lame people like Liv bothered with. Yeah, that sounded about right.

Then, the Slytherin actually tried fighting back a little, calling him a... parlor pony? What? It seemed where Aodhan carried ample insults meant for "five year olds," as his peer so eloquently put it, Liv used ones reserved for the retirement home. Yet, the whole thing was at great contrast with the childish push made towards the repaired quill.

Liv was dishonest, is what he swiftly concluded. Dishonest and contradictory in a not-so-subtle way, but definitely in a "you're going to get made fun of" kind of way. Aodhan was more than happy to deliver on that front.

That is, until the mention of painting was made.

It caused two ideas to spawn within the young lion's mind. First? No way was The Grinch Reincarnate peaceful enough to enjoy something like painting. Surely this snake was too boring, too anti-fun to engage in such a beautiful landscape of higher concepts and emotions. Aodhan's second thought, though, was far kinder, more open-minded and self-serving all at once because he immediately recalled why he escaped the dorms to begin with.

Suddenly, his fingers itched, and the sketchbook in his grasp felt heavier than before.

"... I have an 'O' in charms," he began, speaking slowly, carefully, unlike his usual self. He paused to let the information settle in before continuing, "It comes to me naturally, probably because I'm just that guy, but we both already know that."

He shrugged and proceeded to stand up properly, no longer pushing his weight onto Oliver's head... which the other had surprisingly let him get away with. There was a second he debated simply keeping his mouth shut, all to let his acquaintance connect the dots. However, that would require Aodhan to be a quiet soul. Him. Of all people. For now, he would just keep chatting instead.

"I can help you finish this lightning quick, and then we can get to the fun things. Sounds good? Sounds great to me," he said while grinning, his pearly whites on full display. Though, he knew it would take more to convince the walking bore in front of him.

Within moments, the youth opened his sketchbook, flipping to a random page that he'd been drawing in days prior. It hadn't come along much since then, still just someone floating in space with messy lineart and blobs for hands, but certainly impressive enough for someone of his age and recent experience. He turned towards his peer with excitement coming off him in waves, showing the art like it was a prized possession.

"See? Not exactly a painting, but it’s still close enough to your 'fun thing,' right? Right?" he questioned, expression cheerful and eyes sparkling, "And if you're doing something close to what I'm doing, maybe you're not so loser-ish after all."

Something just happened, Oliver could feel the shift in the mood, almost hear in in Aodhan's tone. And for just a split second, for the one sentence the Gryffindor boy spoke, Oliver could almost think of him as less annoying. If he spoke like that all the time, ignoring the almost bragging factor of it. Then Oliver rolled his eyes. Of course Aodhan needed to keep opening his big mouth. Keep talking some crap. He was in no way 'that guy', but Oliver listened. He sighed.

He didn't need help. Never needed help, ever. That was something he was dead set on keeping. Keeping the self sufficing need to help no one, and 'neglect' to get said help from anyone close to his chest. He was stubborn in that way. Refusing to admit when something was hard, when he couldn't do it. Thought it made him seem weak. Let alone from Aodhan Shaw of all people. Oliver would be lying if he said he had expected that grade from him. It was better then his own. And shit did he hate that.

For a while Oliver was quiet thinking about it, mulling the offer over in his head. Lightly biting his lip as he considered it. His grade- it did need a boost. He wouldn't lie. But help from Aodhan? Someone Oliver considered nothing, no one, and annoyed him most. He wanted the help, sorta, but didn't want to admit it, or ask for it. And because Aodhan had said it, and the way it had been said it. Oliver was gasping at straws here, to justify the help. And settled on it. If he said yes, it was more to help Oliver get rid of Aodhan quicker.

"Fine." Oliver said rolling his eyes, trying to play it off like it was nothing. "Only to get you out of my hair faster." Perfect. No one would know the true reason. He would take the help, and really it was two birds with one stone, Oliver would get the grade up- that part would be his little secret -, and Aodhan would leave him alone for hopefully a little bit. Oliver's eyes followed Aodhan's hands as the other boy opened up his sketch book, and his jaw dropped.

"That's-" His brows furrowed and he let out a small hum. How did he put this nicely? "Ok for someone like you." Now to be fair, that was nice for Oliver. His hands twitched, itching to point out all the faults, in the anatomy and general way the, what even was it? Astronaut? Sure. That was what Oliver would with, the way the astronaut had been drawn. Oliver lightly pushed the homework away from him, further towards the center of the table, turning his body to look at Aodhan more, tearing his eyes from the drawing. "So, to get this right, You h-" He was about to say help, but the word made a pit form in his stomach. "assist" it was close enough, same meaning, but didn't make Oliver feel ill saying it. "me with the homework, and I assist you with the drawing?"

It... worked?

It worked.

Contrary to what people would typically believe, Aodhan could be logical. "Realistic," or whatever. He preferred to choke that side of himself when it served to dampen his own fun, but it lingered; his much-needed anchor to reality, lest the ruckus inside his skull carried him away to the stars. That being said, he knew how difficult Oliver was likely to be, and expected to really put his persuasive language skills to work. Maybe offer a bribe of some kind, or merely continue with terrorizing the other.

But he outright agreed. Just like that, with little to no catch.

Aodhan had even managed to surprise Oliver, it seemed, if the Slytherin's jaw dropping open was any indication. How funny. For such a grump, the guy could be oddly expressive when he wanted to be. It simply took the right person who knew the right buttons to press. Thankfully, Aodhan was more than willing to be that person, curious enough to study exactly what made his companion tick and seethe and everything in-between.

For now, though, he was trying to play nice—the keyword being try, because he fully knew what Liv meant by saying "someone like you." It almost dragged a pout out of him, because Aodhan was manly and awesome and individuals such as himself didn't do childish things like pouting. That was most definitely not the face he was making as he stared Liv down, even if his brows were furrowed and his lip was jutted out.

"By that, I'm sure you mean you expected some Da Vinci quality stuff. I got you next time, don't worry," he cut in, not even thinking twice at the prospect of going through this again. He then nodded along to confirm the summary of their deal, his usual grin slowly making its way to his face once more. This was going so smoothly, it was near unbelievable.

"I wouldn't say assist, but sure! Whatever makes this easier on your poor little heart," he responded in a light tone, setting his sketchbook on the table next to Liv's own belongings. He proceeded to grab a chair afterwards, dragging the wooden thing until it was directly next to the blonde, human Grinch. After plopping himself down into the seat, Aodhan immediately got to work.

He looked over the assignment for a second time, but with a noticeably greater deal of care and patience, eyes moving rapidly as he scanned the words. In hindsight, perhaps it was a good thing that Oliver was revising early. Aodhan knew his memory was horrid, broken into jumbled details that only his brain could parse, but it was easier to remember what was covered just that week.

Therefore, it was also easier to notice any small errors scattered about on the parchment.

"Dude," he said with a risen brow, simultaneously shifting his gaze onto Oliver. His voice was a notch quieter than before, and his expression far more lax. "This is Charms review, right? Why are you mixing 'Aberto' with 'Reparo' for the first incantation question? And—" he squinted at the next line "—you mixed things up for the Dancing Feet thingy too."

For a second, despite them being the tiniest of mistakes, he debated rapping his knuckles against Liv's head to check for an echo, similar to what he did to Gekko months beforehand... just for him to recall exactly what happened, including the disastrous attack on his nostrils. He quickly scrapped the idea. Gentle, Aodhan branded tutoring would have to do. For now.

Regrets were already being had. Oliver again had to bite his cheek, to stop himself from saying something. Though it didn't stop him from thinking, holding back the retorts of 'as if your art will ever improve past that of a five year olds' or a 'there will never be a next time.' The later one being nicer. For Oliver at least. He took a deep breath, letting his fists relax on the table, he just needed to play nice until he got the answers for the homework. Then he could ditch Aodhan for good. Right?

The worst sound had then cursed his ears. The sound of a chair scraping against the floor. Good lord. Was the Gryffindor so weak that he couldn't lift it to carry a chair? To add salt to the wound, Aodhan sat right next to him. Far to close for one to be comfortable. So he himself slightly stood from his seat, and held either end of his char, to lift, scotch, and then sit. Putting a little bit of distance between the two.

He put his arm on the table, resting his chin on his hand as Aodhan looked over his work, biting his lip and looking at it. Charms, it was by far not his strong suit. He was- worried. Yes. Worried that his work was sub par, or less then that. Horrid. A troll mark. He didn't think that he would care, after all Aodhan was lesser then Oliver in most regards. But if he could see the mistakes that Oliver didn't, the mere though put a knot in his stomach.

"Dude," There it was. That was not what he normally sounded like. Quieter, and infuriatingly so, less annoying then normal. Oliver dropped his gaze onto the table, suddenly very interested in pushing the stupid quill away from himself. Waves of shame and embarrassment washing over the Armani boy. He took some deep breaths, a flush rising to his ears and lightly to his cheeks.

"...Yes, It's charms." He said after a while of being quiet. Simple, stupid mistakes. One's he should have seen from a mile away. More regrets, for different reasons now. In a sad attempt to save face, Oliver grabbed his work from him, and picked up the quill. Scribbling out the mistakes a little too roughly, leaving a slight tear in the parchment. Writing down 'Repero' a stupid spell. Why would he need to prepare things when he could easily purchase a new one with the Armani wealth?

He sat back in the chair, crossing his arms, not looking Aodhan in the face, eyes, or really just not looking at him in general. "Charms are stupid..." He muttered under his breath. He himself hadn't noticed it yet, but his leg had started to tap on the ground. He bit his lip, then shook his head. Opening his mouth to say something, then closed it again. Thinking about the best way to say 'I'm still better then you I'm just having a 'bad day' is all.' But he couldn't. There wouldn't be any saving him from the ridicule. "I must have misread the book is all." A lie. Of course. He still wouldn't admit it was his fault.

Oliver's eyes drifted to Aodhan's notebook, narrowing his eyes. "Your anatomy was fucked up." He decided to point out. Sure he was 'bad' at charms, but knowing he could at least draw better then Aodhan brought some joy to him. Even though he was just trying to make himself feel better. "I could hardly tell what it was meant to be..." Oliver grumbled, crossing his arms tighter across his chest.
