Night was always so calm and quiet in Ellesmere Port. Yes, there was the usual wind, the small footsteps of smaller creatures, perhaps the occasional night owl on a walk. But, in general, rather quiet.
Pyce enjoyed the night. With its cool air making it perfect to snuggle under their covers. It was also the perfect time to crack one of those silly little muggle glowsticks Pyce got as a reward at the library, and read a book. It was the best time to be completely uninterrupted by chores, or a particularly noisy Hecate. Pyce had finally managed to convince their mother to buy them Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which she swore she wouldn't be purchasing until the twins got their admittance letters. She caved rather quickly after some pressure from Pyce's aunts.
Soon, the quiet flipping of pages joined the other sounds of the night. Perfectly comforting and soft.
Ashwinders. Pyce read the small paragraph on the beasts. Fascinating little things. For a creature with such a short lifespan, they could certainly do some damage if left unchecked. It was probably inadvisable to try and make one... Pyce made a little note on the side of the page. Maybe when they were older.
Augureys. Very neat birds. With the ability to predict coming precipitation. Pyce wondered if they could convince their mother to get one. If not, Aunt Lea was usually a safe bet on-
Thunk! Pyce poked their head out of their covers, staring at their window. There was a moment of silence before- Thunk! Pyce threw aside their covers and walked over to the window. Standing on the grass below was one Stella Drake. Pyce fiddled with the latch on their window for a moment before opening it.
"What are you doing!" They whisper-shouted, only somewhat annoyed. This was far from the first time such an encounter had happened.

Stella had walked through damp grass and puddle-y roads, avoiding areas where people might still be awake and concerned about a child roaming around at night. It was never particularly hard to get out of the house, but ensuring she could stay out, that no one would catch onto these little night time strolls, that was the tricky bit.
She made her way through the familiar streets, not even bothering to read the street names. The walk to the Rotanski household was a familiar one. And though Stella hadn't started making this walk alone until recently, she had certainly been here plenty of times before then.
Finally, the house was in sight, and Stella made the undignified swim through the bush that separated the front and back yards of the home. After a brief struggle with a tough branch, she emerged on the other side, victorious.
After that, it was only a matter of gathering enough things to throw at Pyce's window. She could, of course, choose to scale the conservatory, but tonight was not a night for climbing. The rain was too fresh, leaving possible climbing holds too slick. Instead, Stella picked up some spare bits of twig from her earlier tussle with the bush, and started pelting them at her best friend's window.
The first stick when unanswered. Stella watched the soggy wood plop back onto the ground, disturbing a puddle and splashing water into her face. Dang. She had been hoping to remain dry.
Stella wiped off the water, her tongue sticking out in displeasure. Gross. But she didn't have time to dwell on some old rainwater, she had a friend to wake! Stella threw another twig. It missed. Wonderful.
Stick three hit its mark, smacking against the window and bouncing back to the ground. Stella managed to dodge the small splash it made when it hit the puddle.
Stella stared up at the window, eyes squinted. There was movement, then, a soft click. Success! Pyce acquired!
"What are you doing!" Pyce shouted down, only causing Stella to grin.
"It's dragon hunting time, Pie!" Stella cheered gleefully. The ginger glared at her. "C'mon! We can even-" The window slid shut. Stella stared for a long moment. She was used to this. Pyce never did entertain the idea of a late night dragon hunt.
And she waited...
And waited...
And they were taking longer than usual. Stella let out a quiet "humph" and plopped on the ground, arms crossed across her chest, and legs crossed under her.

ReducioStella's debut appearance! I am saving her debut amongst other students for summer camp. She's not a werewolf just yet here. That happens in about... A year? On the other side of the window, Pyce had returned to their book. Basilisks. Bloody terrifying beasts, but there was a nagging curiosity in the back of Pyce's mind about whether or not they'd be able to understand one. They jotted down another note on the page.
Pyce snagged a nearby bookmark and slid in onto the page, sighing as they closed the book. It'd do no good to leave Stella out there all night. Because she really would be there as long as possible. Either getting bored and climbing up to the window, or throwing more things at it. Either way, Stella was not the kind of person to be ignored.
After a short moment's deliberation, Pyce snuck down to the kitchen. They grabbed a box of animal crackers they had been saving for a similarly calm night, to snack on under the covers, along with whatever new dragon book the library brought their way. Alas, no new books had been in that week, so Pyce had opted to continue holding onto the crackers. Until now.
Stella loved to explore at night. Something about there being higher chances of seeing creatures. But night was also dangerous! Pyce had tried explaining it before, but they had gone ignored every time. Instead, Pyce began to waste Stella's time where they knew she'd be safe, just below their window. And it worked, for the most part. They could start up a conversation about dragons, or about her siblings, maybe about what house she thought she'd be in. And it'd hold her attention long enough that she'd barely have an hour to roam unsupervised, whilst Pyce fell asleep on the floor next to their window. You really can't blame me, Pyce thought as they opened the box of crackers, I was not made for early mornings. They tore a bit of cardboard away, happily taking one of the little animals for themself. Or late nights, I suppose. They ate it in two bites, mindful of any crumbs.
Pyce returned to their window, peeking out to see Stella, sat on the wet grass, rather displeased look on her face. They snickered as they flicked a cracker onto her head. Stella looked up the second it plonked off her hair and onto the grass in front of her. Pyce held up the box, shaking it slightly.

Stella shot up from where she was sitting when she saw the box in Pyce's hand. An old game, sure, but a fun one. Back when Pyce was worse at reaching the window, it was a simple matter of throwing small candies around in the Rotanski's backyard (Stella had a knack for catching treats with her mouth,) and had quickly become the two's favorite game.
Nowadays, Pyce tended to pull it out when Stella was trying to get them to join on her late night dragon hunts. She suspects the game is an offering. Like one might give a fantasy dragon. She liked thinking about it like that. It was better than Pyce simply trying to distract her.
No matter! Stella didn't let herself get too distracted, and managed to snap up the next cracker Pyce threw down. Looking up, she could see them standing at the window, silently cheering.
And so it began! Stella, catching the crackers in her mouth, with Pyce staying up in their room throwing them. It was a bit of a struggle not to give a joyous cheer every time she caught one, but she managed.
And the night dragged on, two friends playing their silent game with only the moon as their witness. The only guest the autumn wind. But-
Stella never played to stay and play. She looked up to the window, where Pyce was fishing another cracker out of the box.
"Hey Pie?" Stella called up, just loud enough for Pyce to hear. They looked up from the box. "I think I'm gonna go." Their eyes widened. "See ya tomorrow?" Pyce looked down at the box in their hands. Stella knew the exact expression that would be on their face when they looked back up.
So she left.
