Diamonds In The Rough

Lily had been in America for almost a year and she missed Hogwarts and all her old friends. It wasn't that she didn't like America; it wasn't that at all. She just hadn't made a lot of friends here. Actually who was she kidding? She hadn't made any friends here. She stayed to herself just going through her classes, eating, spending some time outside and then going back to her dorm to do homework, read, and sleep. She missed Colin and Liam terribly. The troublemaking trio at Hogwarts. She loved all her sibling but she was the closest with those two. Angus and Alex were here but she was older than them and knew better to not do what they did.
Right now, it was a cold but sunny snowy day and Lily wanted to go outside after classes, and since it was a Friday she could stay out late. She put all her schoolbooks inside her chest in the dorm room and grabbed Persuasion by Jane Austen, taking it outside. For awhile, she just walked around outside, letting her eyes and feet wander. She liked the cold, it reminded her of England and Scotland's weather with the snow and rainy days at times. As she was walking, her eyes caught sight of a boy that had been buzzing with rumors ever since he got her. She couldn't remember his name, but she thought he was the headmasters son, and rumor had it that he had been expelled from Castelobruxo. The rumor was he had intiated a fight and that he had beat up a few guys by himself. That alone got Lily interested in meeting the kid, i mean who wouldn't you know. She took a deep breath to get herself ready and walked over to him, clearing her throat. "I'm sorry for bothering you i just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Lily McCoire."

ALPHONSE TOUSSAINT
♕ early evening, 10th of january 2025 at the courtyard, ilvermorny ♕
Surviving his first week of Ilvermorny was no small feat after most of it was spent in a small room connected to his father's office—a personal punishment of in-school suspension.
It would take many pleas to reinstate his access to Quidditch and allow the newly-dubbed Wampus to intermingle with the student body on a short and tight leash. After that first week of good behavior and outstanding marks on his most recent assignments, Alphonse would gain freedom to peruse the castle atop Mount Greylock without his father's beady gaze. Perhaps Fabian had better things to do than shadow his eldest stepson, or perhaps it truly was his father's pity for the unfortunate circumstance clouding over him.
Despite his initial discretion of the situation, to not shatter the brittle peace between his father and himself, it didn't take long for his expulsion from the private institution of Brazil to catch wind. After introducing himself to the first few faces that would find Alphonse, it seemed the school was abuzz. Bewildered gazes and shallow remarks were thrown his way left and right, yet there was also a strange affiliation and connection also. It wasn't as though the boy truly cared about his reputation—no, all the Toussaint progeny truly cared about was his cousin's and twin brother's safety, and flying, of course. However, those who treated Alphonse with respect would receive it back tenfold; his loyalty was a prized possession that he dared not shy.
Lounging in one of the empty benches of the courtyard, Alphonse had attempted not to shiver like a startled chihuahua, but the chill of Massachusetts would take long time getting used to. His blood was accustomed to the heat of the Caribbean or the humidity of Africa if his parents vacationed there; this cold was a whole new battle not yet endured. He did well to bundle in layers, simply surveying the courtyard to feel out the different cliques of students—who was worth knowing in this foreign land, who wasn't.
In his line of sight was a familiar-looking red-haired girl not much older than himself; he offered a smile before glancing away, assuming she was in passing to whatever the day boded for her. It wasn't until she had cleared her throat that his brown gaze met hers once more and heeded her words as she introduced herself; Lily McCoire was her name.
"Alphonse Toussaint," he returned with a smile, "You're not a bother at all."
He paused a moment, trying to think back to where he may have seen her, "You're not in any of my classes, I don't think. But you duel, right?"

Lily smiled at him and gave him a nod as she subtly looked him up and down. He seemed...nice. She looked away from him for a second, her eyes doing their usual checking her surroundings. She did this a lot ever since she moved here since she still wasn't trusting with anyone here other than her own family and even them she was wary about as she had just met them last April for the first time. She missed her Scotland family sorely, Colin and Liam's jokin, Ciaran and Lorcan's calm and shy attitude. But she would finish this year out and see what happens next. She may go back, she might not. You just never know. She snapped back to attention as he said something about classes. "Oh no, I'm a year above you i believe. I'm a third year right now." She knew that he was younger cause a particular gossipy student had said, in her earshot, that he was a second year. She had also heard that his father had him in in-class suspension. Sucks when you're the headmasters son but don't get away with stuff. She nodded to him asking if she duelled. [co!or]"Yes, I duel. Do you play a sport?"[/color]

Understanding etched its way onto Alphonse's face as he registered her words and nodded in subtle approval at her duelling prowess. Dueling was a sport that the Toussaint boy appreciated and desired to one day tap into, but his heart yearned to soar despite the contempt and backlash of his mother. Alphonse could hear Sarai's voice now, as if the Haitian woman were present, telling him that life on a fast broom would not yield much promise for a 'proper' future—whatever that was supposed to mean.
But dueling—spellcasting in general—was an art form that could propel the boy far if he had enough willpower to try. Willpower, Alphonse certainly possessed in excess, but it would be sunk into Quidditch and Broom-Racing without qualm or regret. Flying was the closest thing to freedom, to possessing wings like his tío Oziel's aerial-animagus form, to chasing, quite literally, victory in its many forms.
"That's cool, I'll have to stop by and watch you duel one day. Maybe I'll learn something," Alphonse replied with a passive smile. His voice was somewhat underlain with annoyance, though not because of Lily, but simply musing about his meddling mother and her constant disapproval. He took a breath and attempted a more natural smile for the girl standing before him, his brown gaze returning to hers with a hint of apology; "I play Quidditch, actually. I was a Chaser for Castelobruxo, and here, I'm a Beater. But I enjoy broom-racing too, tried it out at last summer camp."
He paused a moment, two. "Shit, I’m sorry. You wanna sit?" Alphonse inquired, shifting to one edge of the bench and leaning forward to move his backpack out of her way if Lily wanted.

Lily nodded as she listened to him explain that he had been a chaser in Castelbruxo, and then a beater here. "I don't mind Quidditch, but I'm not a big fan of heights. I'm always fearful that I'm going to fall, and honestly I probably would." She laughed a little to herself. She noticed the annoyance but she also picked up on the fact that it wasn't aimed at her. "My brother at Hogwarts is a broom racer and it gets intense sometimes." Lily added, as she pushed her hair over her shoulder so the slight wind didn't blow it in her face. Alphonse asked if she'd like to sit down and she smiled gratefully. "you're good, don't apologize." Lily said softly and sat down next to him, setting her bag on the opposite side of her between the arm of the bench and her. "Are you somehow related to Sarai Toussiant? I had her as my herbology teacher in my second year. She's really cool!" Lily had loved Herbology when she had Sarai as a teacher, it had been one of her best classes while she attended Hogwarts. She had always been good at Herbology, had always got top grades in it but she definitely preferred Sarai to the previous prof. I mean she didn't mind the previous prof but still.

His brown gaze observed the redhead as Lily accepted his invitation to sit, then came a sense of rapt curiosity as the girl began to share her own opinions of Quidditch. A short but polite chortle escaped from his lips that mingled with her own at her quips; it wasn't so long that the Toussaint boy had conquered his own fear of falling, but a fear of heights was never a battle that required confrontation. His entire life, Alphonse was bestowed a nickname that of 'Icarus' by his grandparents, a boy bred and destined to soar no matter how high and no matter the cost.
There was a twinge of pity when her hesitation became palpable, causing Alphonse to offer a polite smile.
"Yeah, heights can be pretty scary, I suppose," he responded in an attempt to sympathize, "Having a comfortable broom helps with how you ride the wind. The faster you're soaring and the smaller you make yourself on the broom, the more stability you have in flight." He paused a moment; "It's all about aerodynamics or something. We can practice together sometime, if you want."
Nodding along as Lily spoke of a brother entertaining broom racing, a seed of confusion stirred in him. He had assumed the girl beside him was a native student to Ilvermorny rather than a late-arriver like himself, and his eyes widened slightly upon hearing his mother's name spoken with such familiarity.
"You know my mom?" Alphonse inquired with a skeptical gaze and friendly grin, "So, you're technically newish to Ilvermorny too, right?"

Lily listened to him ramble about aerodynamics, before he suddenly asked if she would like to practice with him. "Uhm...we can try, but I can't guarantee I'll be any good."Lily agreed doubt fully. She was definitely not very confident in her flying abilities. Now, on the other hand, she could crush a duel if the stats and God was with her that day. She loved to duel and had always enjoyed it. " I like to duel as a sport. We could always practice if you'd like. I can show you how to choose the right spells to win a duel." It would be amazing if he agreed to it. She only had a friendly duel once with EmmaLee LeDames , a third year Hufflepuff. She widened her eyes as he mentioned Sarai being his mother. " Really? That's awesome! She's an amazing professor and super nice! What's she like as a mom? And yeah, I'm new to Ilvermony. I...wasn't doing well at Hogwarts " Lily looked down at a small watch on her wrist and noticed it was almost one for dinner. "Why don't we go to dinner together and keep chatting?" Lily suggested, a little hopefully, since she was truly enjoying their conversation and hoped they could continue it at dinner.
