Consider me skunk shaped fairy with the most heinous wand.
I herewith bestow you with my endless shrek wisdom: the movie was created by the creative staff that was considered awkward and hard to work with for the main project at the time. It was the lowbudget movie and working on it was the "punishment" for failing on the main projects.
This ultimately made the first Shrek movie a breakthrough in cinematic story telling. Because everyone in the staff team was a bit of a degenerate , overly creative, very awkward, very odd. A team of "unique weirdos". All their input combined resulted in Shrek, the lowbudget punishment movie that outsold the main project ones.
