Jarden was in his last {for the year} class with Lola and Lai- er, Ms. Featherbottom {Who even has a last name like that?} passing time like it was none of their business, doing transfiguration. He was actually pretty decent at it, which did not surprise him at all.

{Oh, but I really do wish we could be done already. Apparently, I have a pen pal to write to. Could be interesting. Could be horrible. You never know.}

~After class, writing the letter~
Dear, Dylan
{That was what I've been told your name was, and I have no idea how to start a letter so...}
I am rather curious about all this pen-pal stuff. See, I have never had an international friend before. Or international contact, if you prefer.

So instead of blathering on and on about how I don't know stuff, let me tell you about myself. {Which I claim to be an expert on.}

And since I am telling you about myself, we must start with the skinks. Emerald Tree Skinks to be precise. It can also be called Tabili, but that's not relevant. It is a cute, small reptile, bright green and the most adorable thing I have ever seen.

This is the first letter so i'm going to write a lot, just so you know. Do tell me if it gets excessive, will you?

Now I'll actually tell you about myself. I have seven family members {not including myself}. Two parents, an older brother, an older pair of triplets {two girls and a boy} and then my twin sister, Mayah. I'm a metamorphagus and an avid Herbology nerd.

I live on the Isle of divination, the village of Nephila Pilipes. I attend Tenũsa and would totally write multiple paragraphs on what it is like there, but I'll spare you the headache. I love broom racing and am quite looking forward to play, not this summer, but the next.

I look forward to hearing about you.

Jarden had re-written the letter multiple times, but had ended up settling on an earlier draft, figuring his writing might as well sound like him, even if it was rather boring or excessively long. He didn't quite know how long a letter was supposed to be, so he had just settled with one of his medium length drafts.

"I hope they don't think I am terribly weird. Then again, maybe I am."

To Jarden,

Honestly, I was surprised to find your owl reach me this fine morning. I had completely forgotten that we had been assigned internation pen pals in order to make more connections across the world. I actually have a cousin that lives in England, so I guess you could say I have an international friend, though we rarely speak to each other anymore. Life gets busy, I guess.

You are very lucky to have a large family. You see, my family is pretty much the opposite. I am an only child. My aunt is my mother's twin and the mother of my cousin that lives in England, so she's basically the only sister/cousin I have.

That's really cool that you attend Tenũsa! I don't think I've met anyone from there before! Also, your home sounds very tropical and amazing! Way different to where I grew up.

I grew up in Swansea, Wales, up until the age of eight when my parents moved us to New York City, New York. Now I attend Ilvermony instead of Hogwarts which I have mixed feelings about. (It's a long story, so I won't go into too many details.)

Enjoy broom racing! I believe that we have it here at Ilvermony, but I didn't sign up for any sports. I guess you could say I'm not as sporty as most people would think.

Sincerely,

D. I. Astor

Jarden was pleasantly surprised when he got a letter back, glad that it arrived safely.
Dylan,
I am so glad that my letter made it safely to you, Tenũsa is quite a bit away from Ilvermorny.

It is quite unfortunate that you don't get to see your cousin very much, I would miss my family dearly if I was gone for even more than a few weeks, so it must be hard.

And I would assume that you have much a similar experience with many, not having met anyone from Tenũsa. We are a rather small school and don't visit schools other than Hogwarts most of the time. If I remember correctly they went to Beauxbatons last year. I didn't, but I heard it was quite fun. That could have also been somewhere else, but my memory is rather faulty.

And if my home sounds tropical then yours sounds unreasonably busy. I haven't heard much about other countries, but I've heard that America is quite... rowdy. I mean that in no rude way, I like busy, but I suppose our versions of busy are vastly different.

I've never met you before, so I didn't really make assumptions about whether if you were 'sporty' or anything. And hey, sports aren't for everyone. Do you have any interests? {Well, you most likely do, but what would they happen to be?}

To Jarden,

Yeah. I believe I remember something about a Beauxbatons event, but I too, didn't attend. I guess you could say that traveling all the way to France during Valentine's Day didn't sound like something I was ready to do. Maybe I'll go next year if they host again.

No offense taken about America. I couldn't agree more about how crazy it is. I'd much rather prefer going back home to Wales where it's way less busy and crazy. You could say I like peace more than chaos.

I guess you could say I'm interested in things like exploring, a little healing since my mom's a healer, and I used to 'duel' with my cousin. Maybe someday I'll join the dueling team since I did enjoy 'dueling' with her when we were little.

Sincerely,

D. I. Astor

These letters were beggining to be his favorite part of the days, not that the Isle was boring or anything but... it was. Just a little bit.
Dylan,
I, too, think going to France would be quite the hassle. We might have different reasons for it, but, personally, it would be a bit much for me. I'm still getting used to this new method of schooling. My Dunkun is nice, a family friend, but it has still been quite the transition.

Wales does sound rather nice. I've never lived anywhere but The Isle of Divination, so it fascinates me, living in a place that doesn't feel like home. Well, not fascinate in a way I wish it was me, but simply makes me wonder what it feels like.

Healing seems quite interesting to me, though I would not take it as a profession. Maybe something herbology related. If I did not already previously stated that I'm positively in love with plants, then now you know.

I actually have a magic plant Journal. It's full of plant descriptions of odd flora and fauna I find on the Isle. Whether it's my ramblings about things that don't actually happen or the plants actually are magic, is yet to be decided. It could be a cause and effect scenario where I'm simply in the right place at the right time but.... Anyway, I could send you a page if you like. Do tell me if you get to see your cousin anytime soon, it sounds very hard to be apart from family for so long.

To Jarden,

Yeah. I was pretty much homeschooled all of my life before Ilvermony, so being in a real in-person school with other people is still pretty new. Though, it's gotten easier over my time here. Even though it still feels different.

I, too, love learning about different plants and animals. Especially the magical ones I've always grown up around. Just seeing them around all the time isn't the same as actually knowing what they are and how they act! Same with plants!

If you're going to the Fall Ball this year, maybe you could bring your journal with you instead of sending a page to me? I would love to see it, but I don't want to force you to take a page out of it! It could be a lot of fun to compare what's different between our two homes.

Sincerely,

D. I. Astor

Dylan,
Homeschooling sounds quite interesting! Here we have these 'clans' of around twenty students before we turn eleven, and then we are assigned a Dunkun. And switching to a different method of schooling is always rather hard. I mean, I only have me to base that assumption off of, and now you, but it seems rather logical, right?

A magical creatures guy, are you? My eldest brother adores things like that. He has a particular fascination with dragons, but we don't have many of those around here. I like them too, though not quite as much as my brother. I am much more of a plant person, but you already knew that.

Fall ball? I might, might not. I had to ask my sisters about that, I have a rather faulty memory. And I could send a copy or one to you, I would just have to find a spare piece of parchment and re-write it for you. They're rather short, so it wouldn't be a bother.

I heard there was going to be an international summer camp, though. So if you are going I could see you there. If not I will just do as previously stated.

To Jarden,

A Dunkun sounds very interesting too! At times I wish I had something like that. Maybe then I would be a lot more social than I am. I'm an only child, and the only other kid I really grew up with was my cousin until I moved here, so you could say I'm not great at starting a conversation.

I agree that switching to a different style of learning and teaching is hard. Going from being taught alone by my mother or father to being in a class with other people also learning the same thing I am is still very weird to me.

A copy could work! Since you need an extra piece of parchment, I've placed an extra piece with this letter just in case you need it. I can't wait to see what you've been able to find where you live!

Also, I don't think I'm going to be attending the summer camp this year. There's a lot of family stuff that has come up as well as me finally being home for the first time in nearly five years, so I'll sit this year out. Maybe next year, though!

Sincerely,

D. I. Astor

Dylan,
Being a socialite is overrated, I say stick to your small circle and do not get in other peoples business. It rarely ends well.

having a Dunkun is pretty much homeschooling. I mean, it is not in any way for multiple reasons but it also does have some similarities? Because a) it is not at home {main point} and b) I would assume that homeschooling is a bit less structured? Then again, I am not particularly knowledgeable in the homeschooling department.

But it also is not so different. It is pretty much one on one. Or one on two-three depending. {For me it is one on two, because both me and my sister share a Dunkun.} I think that both my method of learning and homeschooling both have the flexibility to be more fine tuned to the students, as well.
{Sorry for my tangent.}

It is a shame you are unable to attend summer camp, but I hope everything goes well for you. And it's wonderful that you can finally feel at home again!

To Jarden,

Wow! Your journal entry is fascinating! You've conviced me to try and write one of my own about the plants and animals in my own home! I may have to pay a special visit to my grandparents' woods behind their house where many very interesting plants and animals reside.

I had no idea that there was even a system like that besides homeschooling! It's really fun to learn about the different ways people are taught before they enter their magical school. I've always been interested in learning the different styles of learning, but never really had the chance until now! I'm glad that we were chosen to be Quill Pals. It's been a lot of fun getting to know you!

Sincerely,

D. I. Astor
