Asteria made her way up to the Owlery. She was glad she was in Ravenclaw so she wouldn't have to walk that far. Owls as pets never came to her mind. She loved owls because of how intelligent they were, but she preferred cats. Her favorite owls were Snowy Owls. They were so majestic. Her mother had a Snowy Owl named Solstice, and Asteria loved watching her fly. She had even included some treats in her package for Solstice.

Asteria had spent all night writing the letter to her parents trying to explain everything that happened in the past months. Her envelope was bulging because she couldn't fit everything on one page. She tightly clutched the package in her arms as she entered the room. Asteria instantly regretted not listening to the advice of bringing a sweater. It was like winter came early. The circular room stank of owl droppings and the drafty air probably made it worse. She carefully avoided the droppings trying to find Solstice. Her parents had sent her a letter explaining how they were doing with Solstice. Asteria had sent her to the Owlery so that she could write back.

Asteria made her way to the bath, or at least she thought it was one. Solstice was there, preening her feathers. When she saw Asteria, she nipped her finger in greeting. Asteria giggled and tied a ribbon around the owl's leg. The package looked safe and secure. Solstice flew out the window, happy to breathe the fresh air. Asteria ran to the window and watched the owl fly until she couldn't see her anymore. A content sigh escaped her lips as she made her way down the stairs. Everything will be alright.

Gretchen would finally be the one sending letters back home to her parents. She only had the regrets that she didn't have any younger siblings that she could brag about being at Hogwarts to. She didn't have her own owl yet, no, her parents had told her to wait. So she had to use the school owls, which she absolutely adored, especially their feathers. The walk was an issue, but Gretchen had always loved running. Maybe she'd choose a more active pet if her parents ever let her get one. When she was older she wanted to be a dragon trainer, if such a thing existed. She had only vague ideas of what being a grown-up was like, and usually only from her siblings' letters.

As she was running up to the Owlery, she caught sight of another girl. A potential friend! Gretchen made her way up the stairs and into the room, glad she had robes on. She'd always thought that they were stuffy, but now she saw some usefulness in them. She gave the other girl a huge grin, "Hello!" she said, tucking her hands in her pockets and trying not to look as though she had just ran almost all the way here from the Hufflepuff Common Room. "Are you a first year, too? I am, I'm Gretchen Whistler."

"Isn't it cool that we have all these school owls? My mum won't let me get one, 'cos she says Jason already does--that's my brother, by the way." she paused, glanced at the other girl, and, red reaching up to Gretchen's cheeks, from embarrassment, not cold. "Oh! I've been going on for a bit, yeah? Sorry about that."

You might know one of Gretchen's siblings: Alfred, 26; Marcia, 23; Erica and Heather, 21; August, 18; Stella and Andrew, 17; Jason, 14; and Oliver, 12.

Asteria had nothing to do so she decided to stick around and play with the owls. She dug out some owl food from her pockets and gave it around. One of her favorite ones hopped up to her nipping her fingers for food. She ruffled the owls soft brown feathers and held out her hand. It was so cute. While watching the owls play, she heard footsteps. Probably someone heading up to the Owlery. Asteria considered going back down, but she decided that she had to make some new friends. Being lonely was not one of her goals this year.

The girl walked up with a huge grin on her face. That instantly made Asteria smile. Seeing others happy always made her smile for some reason. The brown-haired girl’s robes were the colors of Hufflepuff. They were known to be kinder, so Asteria was glad. Hopefully she could carry a conversation because Asteria definitely couldn’t. The girl tucked her hands in her pockets as if hiding something.

Hello! Are you a first year, too? I am, I'm Gretchen Whistler.

Gretchen. That was a nice name. It rolled right off her tongue. It was such a pretty name. A girl in her school had the same name. She was friendly but she, in a way, she was too perfect. Asteria dearly hoped this Gretchen wasn’t because she always felt uncomfortable around those people. It made her feel dumber.

Isn't it cool that we have all these school owls? My mum won't let me get one, 'cos she says Jason already does--that's my brother, by the way.” She paused, as if catching her breath. “Oh! I've been going on for a bit, yeah? Sorry about that.

Asteria smiled. This Gretchen seemed very talkative. She liked that. And she could definitely relate. When Asteria had a good topic to talk about, she would never stop. But if she had no idea what to say, her responses were short and her attention span even shorter. Maybe if Asteria talked about herself, she could make Gretchen feel more welcome.

My name is Asteria. I’m a first year too. I’m pretty sure I saw you at the Sorting Ceremony.

Asteria stopped, thinking about what to say next. Maybe something about the owls. They were in the Owlery after all.

I don’t have my own owl either. My parents make me use theirs to send them letters. I find it a bit annoying sometimes but it’s better than nothing, right?

Phew, at least Asteria wasn't finding Gretchen to be annoying. Some of the older kids had waved her off on the train when she had tried to speak with them, so she wasn't really sure. Plus, some people were quiet, like her older sister Stella, and didn't really feel like talking all that much. Gretchen reached out to pet another owl. She liked that they could come close to her, and they wouldn't be afraid.

It was nice to see Asteria smile back at her when she came up. It put her more at ease with everything, especially since Gretchen hadn't made any very close friends yet. Maybe she and Asteria would be besties. Or maybe it was wrong of her to assume that they would grow close. They had only met for the first time today, after all, even if they were both first years, that was no indication that they'd still enjoy each other's company later on.

"Nice to meet ya, Asteria!" Gretchen said. Asteria was such a cool name. She was something muggley, she was Gretchen. She liked her name, but Asteria was cool as well. "Yeah, prob'ly 'cos I was just about last, eh? Whistler and all. Sorry I didn't spot ya, I was looking for my siblings." she chuckled. It would be the only year she shared with Stella and Andrew, so she'd craned her neck looking at the Slytherin and Gryffindor tables for most of that time until she spotted them.

Gretchen waited when Asteria paused. What could she have been thinking about? Maybe she decided that she had some homework to do that was a little more important than talking to another girl in the chill of the Owlery. Gretchen smiled when Asteria spoke again, though, and made sure her 'listening ears' were on, like her mum said.

"Yeah. Jason won't let me send letters with his owl unless he's sending them, too, and he takes forever." she put her hands on her hips and mimicked her own movements as she waited for her older brother to write his letter, laughing the whole time. "I miss my parents sometimes. Last year I had 'em all to myself, 'cos everyone else was at school or moved out." Gretchen nodded, "They're pretty cool for parents. How 'bout yours?"

You might know one of Gretchen's siblings: Alfred, 26; Marcia, 23; Erica and Heather, 21; August, 18; Stella and Andrew, 17; Jason, 14; and Oliver, 12.

Asteria enjoyed Gretchen’s company. After a few weeks alone, she felt like she could finally talk freely. Maybe that’s how the owls felt. They were happy when they received a letter because they could finally go out and spread their wings. Maybe it wasn’t complete chance that they met in the Owlery.

Gretchen seemed to live in a huge family. She had mentioned her siblings several times. Asteria, being an only child, did wish she had siblings for a time. When she went to school and made friends, they had told her that siblings were the worst. But now, it seems that having so many siblings isn’t that bad. Gretchen seems so at ease with people probably because of her large family. Maybe if they became closer, Asteria could pick up some tips.

When the question of parents came up, Asteria hesitated a little bit. Even after living with them for all of her life, she couldn’t come up with the right words to say.

Uhh...they’re pretty cool I guess. The only things I didn’t like about them is that they forced me to eat disgusting vegetables.

Hopefully that joke served as an icebreaker. Asteria could go on and on about gross vegetables. Especially broccoli. She smiled, glad that she had a friend. Or a future friend. She wasn’t sure yet.
