Saoirse looked at the paper, she looked all over. Or well almost everywhere, 'excuse me's' and 'sorry's' flew everywhere, as she pulled through the crowd of others attempting to find their partner. Turning back round she saw a table in a darker corner, with one boy sitting there, 'Wolfe...John Wolfe' that was the name she was given by their professor. He looked like a lone wolf though, so she took a deep breath and marched over there triumphantly. "Hi, are you, John Wolfe?" She said, it seemed the boy hadn't heard her, so she fell onto the seat across from him and smiled before beginning to look at the project, it didn't look too hard considering the fact there was two of them.
Saoirse settled down in her seat placing her book down in front of her, she tried to keep a happy face. Clueless to when the boy would respond, maybe he was asleep, or he was probably ignoring her and she had have to slap him across the face with her boo-- 'Calm down, redhead!' She took a deep breath, any further action may cause her thoughts to get ahold of her will but she was getting annoyed with blonde boy either way.

Finally a class that John found captured his attention. Potions had been something that his family had been intent on learning, passing down any knowledge they had through each generation. Something about gathering herbs and organizing them, weighing out ingredients and reading over notes... mixing.. all of that appealed to John a great deal. He found it almost soothing to sit and go over studies in being a Potioneer.

However... today was something he was not looking forward to. Professor Elliot had brought up doing work with partners.. something John did not enjoy. Sharing responsibility.. waiting on the other person.. having to explain things they maybe didn't understand and wasting valuable time they could use towards mixing a potion. To him he just wanted to dive right in and engross himself completely in a project not have to share the experience. It had set him on edge the second the announcement had been made.

John sat in his chair, back stiff and waited to see if his partner would approach him. He had come here early to claim this spot... and was not about to give it up just to walk across the room to a new spot. Not bothering to look up and wait to see if anyone was approaching him, John opened his book and began to go over the notes the Professor had given. Already the classroom had burst into a loud mess giving the boy a headache.

"Hi, are you, John Wolfe?"

A bolt of electricity, annoyance more like it, shot through his spine and made him stiffen even more in his seat. 'Great..' He thought in annoyance as the girl crashed into the seat across from him. Was she going to be this loud the entire time, he wondered. Slowly John lazily raised his green eyes to settle on the girl, no expression on his face. Judging by the forced look on her's she didn't seem too keen on being placed with him either. At least the feeling was mutual.

"I am.. and you are?" A bit of venom behind his words. She couldn't even be bothered to introduce herself before blurting out his name or sitting herself down in such a manner? He would wait for her to answer him on her name before jumping right into the instructions for the assignment.

"So... anyway." Clearing his throat, John followed along with the textbook entry on mixing a Cure for Boils. "It looks like we need a good amount of ingredients for it... but I guess we are supposed to go over what it involves first and effects..." His voice trailed off as he looked back up at the girl. 'I hope she actually applies herself to classes or I will have to do all of this...' He had to hold back an audible groan at the thought... Although... the class might go faster if they could work well together...

John's eyes sized the girl up. Other than knowing she was a first year and in Hufflepuff, her robes giving her away, from the accent he also gathered she was Irish.. He wasn't sure he had seen her anywhere outside of Potions and the Great Hall every now and again.

"Did you already read over the notes on what it is for? We could just get right to grabbing the ingredients." John asked a little impatiently.

Saoirse looked up, oh yeah she had forgotten to introduce herself, whoops. "I am Saoirse Dwight," she looked over at him, before double checking the list of ingredients that were put down for the potions.
"It looks like we need a good amount of ingredients for it... but I guess we are supposed to go over what it involves first and effects..."
She nodded in agreement and began listing some of the effects she knew by heart, thank the Lord for her aunt, she wouldn't have gotten this far without her. Suddenly she caught herself off guard naming everything she knew about the potion, including ingredients, all of the effects, how to make it, and anything else she could. Overapplied, she was, way too overapplied. "Sorry...I get carried away."
"Did you already read over the notes on what it is for? We could just get right to grabbing the ingredients."
"Yes..." Saoirse added her own bit of spite in her tone, she could, would, should, and will fight venom with cyanide if necessary, without regret too. "So, let's split up for a second and go out to look for the ingredients," her scowl came out as she left the table to find what was needed while writing in her log about this Wolfe boy, this wouldn't be fun.

"So, let's split up for a second and go out to look for the ingredients."

John glared at the girl's back as she stood and left their table. Sitting by himself for awhile he tried to cool his temper. 'How dare she talk to me like that. It isn't my problem she has to be my partner.. The boy thought angrily as he stood up and started in the opposite direction towards another set of shelves. He was sure he had seen a spot where the porcupine quills and snake fangs were being kept when he walked into class. Shouldering past another student, pushing them out of the way John reached across a second peer and grabbed the container of quills. A volley of disgruntled 'hey!'s followed him as he set the jar down on another shelf to carefully count out the amount they would need. He chose only the best looking in tact quills, still muttering to himself about his partner. "Sorry I get carried away.." He mocked quielty under his breath. He huffed as he peered up and across the room to where she was standing. "Ridiculous." He chuffed again. Even if she did seem to know quite a good deal of information about their assignment, still... Another round of angry looks from the students he had cut off as he placed the quill container back on the shelf ignoring the reaching hands of a couple of other students.

Snake fangs were next... and it appeared someone was already trying to count out what they would need. Rolling his brilliant green eyes, John stood next to them waiting impatiently. "Did you need-" The student turned to offer him the jar of fangs but John gave them a sour look causing them to immediately set the jar back onto the shelf.

Grabbing the last of the fangs, John strode back over to their table and took his seat waiting for Saoirse to return, his thoughts still boiled in his skull.

Saoirse quietly counted jar after jar looking for what they needed and helping others. Measurements and proportions were kind of her thing. She traced her finger across each and ever ingredient container before stopping and removing a jar, carefully from the top of her shelf on her tip toes. She traced her finger along the side pattern of the Lionfish scale and counted it how many she needed, it wasn't the only spikey thing that they had to put on the potion, that was for sure.
While looking over the contents of a jar Saoirse over heard a large amount of 'hey's coming from the other side of the room, tilting her head ever so slight the thing she was fearful of came to truth. There was John just making it a goal of his to disrupt everyone in his way, and at some point she rolled her eyes and lost interest, that stupid partner of her's was going to get his face smooshed in. At one point or another, she settled down and began counting out the amount she needed.
Returning to the table, Saoirse found him sitting there with his resting cranky face. "Well now I guess we can get started, better hurry up considering that scene of yours," how uncanny was it the meanest person in her was also her partner?

Finally John thought as he tried to not bore a hole into his partner as she returned to the table. All he wanted was to get this over with and leave the class so he could rush off to the Library.

"Well now I guess we can get started, better hurry up considering that scene of yours."

Raising a slender brow at the girl John snorted, trying to not roll his green eyes. "They should've been quicker about their work." He gave a slight shrug and sat up straighter in his seat, peering at what she had brought back to the table. Giving everything a once over, to make sure nothing was out of order, John opened his book.

"Can you heat the cauldron while we get everything else ready?" John looked across the table. "Please." He added trying to sound nice but his voice betraying him, a twinge of chill lingering in his tone. Reaching to his right he grabbed a mortar and pestle, setting it between the two of them to use. His thoughts were starting to cool off as he looked his partner up and down out of the corner of his eye. She had gotten the right things... so maybe he could just coast by this project with her... Still, he felt leery trusting anyone. The last time he had, had a partner the cauldron exploded and caused a giant mess thanks to the Ravenclaw boy he had been placed with. Letting out a small breath, John steadied his tone once more.

"I can uh.. crush the fangs..." He placed the ingredients gently into the mortar and started grinding. The awkward sound of the pestle against the inner part of the bowl was the only thing between the two of them. Should he make conversation? She had already annoyed him beyond belief but... the silence made him shift uneasily in his seat. "So.. Potions.. is this one of your favorite classes..?"

John's answer was never the less short of what she expected from it
"They should've been quicker about their work."
Saoirse rolled her eyes as she set the pot up, his requests were just as demanding as ever, with that harsh tone and cruel voice he sounded equally upset as before. Of course the 'please' that followed after was comforting, enough to get a small smile out of Saoirse. A genuine smile, something that seemed like a hard feat for somebody with his taste. She carefully watched over the water, boiling and flowing over was something Saoirse wasn't ready to put up with right now, a 'please' and 'sorry' wasn't enough to stop her from being unsettled by his string of tantrums.

Saoirse looked over at him, as he crushed all the ingredients, he seemed almost uncomfortable. Without any real explanation, maybe the silence was driving him mad. That would be hilarious, Saoirse thought to herself.
"So.. Potions.. is this one of your favorite classes..?"
Thoughts churned in her head, shoud she leave him hanging and get on his nerves even more or be nice for one second. The redhead nodded, "mhm, yeah. I guess I like how orderly it is compared to other classes." She looked over at him and flashed him a smile, "is it one of yours, lone Wolfe?"

Tapping the pestle on the edge of the bowl, John set it to one side and checked the contents in the mortar. It looked nice and fine, John expected it was suitable for the potion when needed. Counting the horned slugs, he gave a small nod, more so to himself than his partner. The need to be orderly and everything in the right place overwhelming the need to seclude himself from another person. He couldn't risk failing the class assignment due to pride.

"Mhm, yeah. I guess I like how orderly it is compared to other classes."

John had to agree. There was something about Potions he admired and found extremely pleasing. Laying out tools, ingredients, taking measurements and notes.. it all was rather pleasing. Saoirse's last remark struck a cord with the boy however.

"-is it one of yours, lone Wolfe?"

A small flash of anger spilled over him once more. He knew the girl had said it but the last phrase he could have sworn translated into his father's voice, making his stomach flip and head spin. He had to forcibly stop himself clenching his hands into fists, moving his hands to his lap to grip his robes instead. At home it hadn't been a secret, his seclusion. In fact he had to be pulled from his schooling with other local Wizarding children because of their behavior around the boy... and mostly from his. He hadn't gotten along with them, mostly another group of boys whose family were also on bad terms with the Wolfe name. Oil and Water. Always trying to out do one another, generations and generations of bad blood between the families. The boys would tease him mercilessly, always alone.. lone wolf. Unwanted. Neglected. Odd and strange. An outsider even to his own kind.

"Yes." John managed through gritted teeth, the memories of home filling his head like a freshly reopened wound, festering and burning down to the bone. It wasn't her fault, how could she know. A small voice in the back of his mind tried to stave off the rage boiling up in the boy's chest almost swallowing his breath and whisking it away from his lungs.

"It isn't for everyone though." John muttered trying to compose himself. 'She couldn't have known.. there's no way.' Those kids weren't here.. he was safe. From them anyway.. but of course the name had managed to follow him. Why was being alone such a bad thing? He knew people didn't like him and that suited him fine. It made for less trouble and he didn't have to pretend around others. Standing up, John took off his robes and set them on the back of his chair before rolling up his sleeves neatly folding them above his elbows.

"This looks hot enough." Trying to return his focus to the task at hand, the jeering stare of his past bullies still fresh in his mind making him feel as if they were in the room. Taking the thermometer from next to the cauldron, John placed it inside and checked to be sure it was almost to 250. Adding in the correct measurements for the crushed fangs, John turned the burner up a bit so it would rise to 250 and counted to 10.

Hopefully the counting would calm the last bit of anger brewing in him. Lonewolf.. outsider... It had taught him to fend for himself. Rely on himself more than anyone. Deep in thought he almost missed the count as he waved his wand over the cauldron.

"We can just let it sit now for awhile." John averted his eyes from his partner not wanting to give away his emotions. He took his seat once more and made note of the time.

Saoirse watched as the boy as he began sifting through the ingredients adding them into the cauldron slowly a bit a time. She felt horrible, it was obvious she had set off a tick, an emotional tick. Like people accidentally do with her and memories of her mother. "Hey..." She pulled her herself up on the table in hopes of keeping an eye on her partner and the cauldron, that was the problem with being short. "I didn't mean for it to come off wrong, it's my fault. I shouldn't be so insensitive, it's probably not your first time around with nickname 'lone wolf'. I'm sorry," she tried to smile at him, hoping he would notice that and not the fact that she was embarrassed and regretful.

It seemed the boy was doing the same, maybe he wasn't as cold-hearted as he seemed. Hurt people just hurt people, she reminded herself. She had done a lot of hurting herself throughout these past few months, and Saoirse was a very hurt person. "So, John. Do you have interests, like past-times or things you might like?" The redhead paused, "I dunno if that includes people but, I don't think we have the right to ask that about each other at this point in time in our acquaintance-ship."

Scribbling down a handful of other notes on a section of his work, he let the silence grow between the two. The last thing he needed to do right now was snap at her during class. Of course it hadn't been the first time hearing the phrase... still somehow it dug deeper into his core. At one point he had prided himself on being more of a loner, his peers never really understanding him or how he was raised coming with pre-judged feelings from those around him. None of that was new to him. In fact it had made him grow a thick outer shell and even sharper tongue. He saw across from him the girl stand and pull herself up higher on the table.

As she began speaking he realized she was forming some sort of apology... It made a part of him tense up. Was she doing it out of pure formality? Looking up, he set his green eyes on the girl and studied her face trying to gauge how sincere she was being. The smile on her face seemed genuine... Still, he felt on guard and only offered the girl a small nod and half-smile in return.

"So, John. Do you have interests, like past-times or things you might like?"

He thought for a moment although things had already come to mind quickly at her question... but the next part.. "I dunno if that includes people-" A red coloring washed over the boys face as he shifted in his seat. What had she meant, people!? Like... like.. girls? Like like? The thought instantly frazzled his brain and made him short circuit. All he could do was reply with a nervous laugh, unintentional but for some reason he couldn't hold it in.

"I uh... no." Clearing his throat he removed his gaze from her and looked to the analog timepiece that he had been using to track their time for brewing. A couple more minutes left on the clock... why did it suddenly feel like time had completely slowed? "My family owns horses.. so we usually go riding." He left out the part where his father would also go on hunts and drag the boy along with him... John didn't particularly care for that so much. The reminder of riding also came with a feeling of homesickness. He loved going to the stables and grooming something about it was calming. "I also do some... painting." His eyes kept to the watch as it ticked ever so slowly. "Mostly oil paints, I really like working with them.. they sort of take some getting used to but they're a wonderful medium." Pulling his gaze from the timer, he looked at the redhead.

"What about you?" The change of topic had done the trick, whatever frustrations he had felt seemed to be quelled. "Including people." A grin snaked across his lips, the last addition meant more as a playful change of pace to the conversation.
