aspian stared at the ceiling, expression unreadable, but behind his eyes was a storm of irritation. His plastered hand rested on his stomach, wrapped in neat layers of gauze that still smelled faintly of ginger and burn salve — like someone had tried to bottle comfort and force it onto a kid who didn’t ask for it.
He sighed through his nose. He hated staying still. Hated being pinned down like some broken thing while the rest of the world moved without him.
The crash hadn’t even been his fault.
One second, he was flying — really flying — wind on his face, and all that stuff. The next, someone came barreling out of nowhere and knocked into him like a troll in a broomstick shop. No warning. No time to adjust. Just a burst of panic, pain, and sky twisting the wrong way.
Now, here he was. Stuck in the Hospital Wing, far from the air he craved, the buzzing energy in his veins screaming for something to do. And for what? Because some idiot with no understanding of personal space had taken him out mid-flight?
He scowled at the ceiling, like it was responsible for all his troubles in the world.
His gaze flicked to the bed beside him, now occupied by a girl. Caspian sighed inwardly — not that he had anything better to do. If he couldn’t be up and about, at least he could be entertained.
"So, what catastrophe landed you in here?" His voice was laced with a playful curiosity. She seemed friendly enough.

Olivia was tired and down after her last transformation. She had gotten into a fight with another student and lost. Then she had hurt herself, as usual.

She had a tough time at Hogwarts, almost no friends and her father had not answered her letters. She was behind on her schoolwork and was too tired to do well in class.

Now she was lying in the hospital wing with at least a dozen more scars than she had before. She had not had any visitors, had not received any letters from her father and she was pretty sure that no one even knew she was in the hospital wing.

She had seen the boy being carried in. When suddenly asked: "So, what catastrophe landed you in here?" Olivia didn't know what to say. The honest answer would have been: "Had a tough full moon," or something like that. But she wasn't sure that was a good idea.

So instead she lied and said, "Uh, just had a little accident," and hoped he would be satisfied with that.

"What about you?" she asked then. "Let me guess, flying and crashing or something like that?" Then she waited for his answer and hoped he wouldn't pay too much attention to her answer.

aspian arched a brow at the girl’s vague reply, but didn’t press. Everyone had their secrets. He wasn’t about to go digging where he wasn’t invited. Still, something about her answer didn’t sit right, like a puzzle with the corner pieces missing. He filed it away, tucked into a very deep part of his mind.
When she guessed the nature of his injury, he gave a low snort at her guess. "Flying and crashing. Brilliant deduction," he said, his voice dry and old as parchment, lips quirking into a half-smirk. “What gave it away? He asked.
He shifted on the mattress after a moment, trying to find a position that didn’t make his ribs throb. “Some genius thought a mid-air collision was a great way to say hello,” he muttered. “I, tragically, disagreed.”
He paused, then added, “He didn’t even have the decency to say sorry.”
The bitterness in his voice surprised even him. He hadn’t meant to care that much — about the crash, or the other student. He hated being still.
He blew out a breath through his nose, sharp and quiet. Then, after a beat, as if remembering how conversation worked — or maybe just tired of the silence — he said, “Oh. I didn’t get your name. I’m Caspian.”
He waited a bit more before he added, almost as an afterthought, "Hope your 'little accident' heals quick." It wasn’t exactly gentle. But it wasn’t sarcastic either. Just somewhere in between — neutral.

Olivia caught the tone Caspian was using. "I didn't mean it that way," she said quickly. "It's just that I prefer not to talk about it." She looked up at the ceiling to clear her mind. "If you promise not to spread it! You could say I had a tough full moon," she said after a moment when she decided to be honest. "You're the first person I've told that to," she added to reinforce her words about not spreading it.

"And about your injury - I heard them talking about it when they brought you in," she replied then with a small, crooked smile. "Oh, and my name is Olivia Williams but my friends call me Ollie," she also introduced herself. "If I would have any," she then added quietly to herself. That was the truth. She didn't have any friends, not yet anyway.

"You seem like a nice and cute guy, do you wanna be friends?" Olivia then suddenly blurted out. She blushed and looked away. "Sorry, I don't know where that came from," she quickly added. Why would she always succeed in doing that?! Always accidentally putting herself in an embarrassing situation. When her blush subsided a little, she looked back at Caspian. Hope he didn't take it badly.

aspian blinked. Of all the things he’d expected her to say — that definitely wasn’t it.

The words didn’t hit him like a jolt. They sank instead — slow, quiet — like a stone settling at the bottom of a deep pond. He didn’t react right away. Just stared at nothing in particular, eyes fixed on a crack on the wall, letting the weight of it slide into place behind his ribs.

After a quiet moment, he said, “Alright.” His voice was steady. Not overly soft, but certain.

“You’ve got my word. That stays with me.”

Then she introduced herself. Olivia. Ollie. He mouthed it once without sound. Ollie. Not bad. Kind of fit. “Ollie,” he repeated aloud, “Suits you.”

And then — “You seem like a nice and cute guy, do you wanna be friends?”

Caspian stared at her for a moment, processing.

He wasn’t used to people calling him nice. He wasn’t sure what he was supposed to say. Cunning, clever, annoying, sure. But nice? Cute? His brain didn’t know how to file that.
He could feel the edges of his ears heat up before he could stop it.

He looked away for a beat, like the wall opposite was suddenly very interesting, before he turned to look at her again.

“Wow,” he said, voice dry as summer parchment. “First person to ever call me nice and cute in the same sentence. You must’ve hit your head harder than you thought.”

“But… sure,” he added, tilting his head slightly toward her. “We can be friends, Ollie.”

Olivia beamed. He actually wanted to be friends with her. Really. It was even more of a relief to hear that he wasn't going to reveal her secret.

“That means the world to me,” Olivia explained, smiling broadly. “You see, I don’t really have that many friends.” Her smile faded a little, and her thoughts consumed her for a moment. But then she broke out of them. “Anyway, you said someone crashed into you while you were flying?” she asked then. “Do you play Quidditch?”

Olivia thought Quidditch seemed like a very interesting and fun sport. But because she hated being around people, she hadn't watched the matches at school. She had never considered trying it herself.

It felt wrong that someone like her would ever play on a team. But she pushed the thought away and waited for Caspian's answer. She hoped she wouldn't have to share too much about herself. She didn't like talking about herself, it made her feel very selfish.

That's why it felt good to ask Caspian about quidditch. Because it was a fairly broad and neutral topic of conversation that couldn't go into too much depth.

She took a sip from a glass of water that was on her bedside table. Then she looked at Caspian, actually interested in his answer.

aspian huffed a laugh, shaking his head. “Not yet. But I really want to.” He wasn't that good at Quidditch or flying in general...yet.

“I’ve been practicing whenever I can.” His tone was casual on the surface, but a promise underneath. He shrugged, wincing slightly at the tug in his ribs. “Anyway, I’ll get there when I get there. No rush. Well—some rush. But you get it.” His tone was dismissive, like he didn’t want her to think he cared too much, though the faint crease between his brows betrayed him.

He tilted his head against the pillow, lips quirking into a crooked grin. “Crashing into idiots mid-air isn’t exactly helping my reputation, though.” He tapped his bandaged ribs with two fingers, the motion half-mocking.

For a moment, his expression softened, almost boyish. “What I wouldn’t give for a Honeydukes run right about now. Chocolate frogs, sugar quills—anything that doesn’t taste like… medicinal sludge.” He let his eyes wander around the Hospital Wing. The beds were lined up in neat rows, the sheets all painfully crisp and sterile, the faint scent of medicinal herbs lingering in the air. Caspian wrinkled his nose and made a face.

He tilted his head, smirk sharpening. “So… what do you actually do for fun, Ollie? Don’t tell me you just collect scars and hospital visits.”

Olivia listened to Caspian as he told her about Quidditch. She nodded when he said he was practicing and such. At least it seemed like he cared about Quidditch. Nice for him since Olivia wasn't that interested in Quidditch.

She smiled a little when he said that crushing into idiots mid-air wasn’t helping his reputation. “No, I don’t think crashing is the best way to become a Quidditch player,” she said, smiling a little.

Then he said that thing about Honeydukes and Olivia nodded. “Oh yeah, if only I had my bag. I have like a stash of sugar quills,” she said, smiling at his expression. “You could say I’ve had my fair share of hospital visits and I still don’t like it.”

Then he asked what she did in her free time. “Not much. I just try to keep up with all the schoolwork and not die during the full moon,” Olivia replied, trying to make it sound like a funny joke. She wasn't sure she succeed.

“Although I like reading and being outdoors,” she said then, shrugging. “Nothing particularly interesting, not like Quidditch.”

Olivia yawned heavily, realizing how tired she felt. But she tried to stay awake for Caspian's sake. It would be quite unpleasant to fall asleep in the middle of their conversation.

aspian gave a short laugh when she teased him about Quidditch. “Yeah, you’ve got a point. Crashing mid-air isn’t exactly the greatest audition for Quidditch.” He smirked faintly, though there was a trace of frustration in his eyes.

Her mention of sugar quills had him perking up immediately, and his eyebrows shot up. “Wait—you’re holding out on a stash of sugar quills? While i'm here starving?" He pressed a hand dramatically to his chest. “You wound me, Ollie. Next time, I expect you to share with the tragically injured.

When she admitted she’d had more than her fair share of hospital visits, he tilted his head toward her, his grin softening. “Yeah… I can tell. This place doesn’t exactly feel new to you.”

Then came the full moon line. Caspian’s smirk faded into something quieter, though his expression stayed steady. “Not dying during the full moon,” he repeated, almost under his breath. He didn’t laugh at the joke—didn’t think it was funny—but he didn’t pry either. "Sounds brutal. But you’re here, and you’re still talking, so that counts for something.”

When she added she liked reading and being outdoors, his lips quirked again. “Reading I get, even if thats something that doesn't particularly interest me. Books don’t run into you at top speed. Outdoors too. The lake, the grounds… anything but these bloody four walls. I’d kill for even five minutes of fresh air right now.”

Then he caught her yawn and let out a low, teasing laugh. “Careful. If you fall asleep on me, I’ll take it personally. I’m funny, charming, and completely unboring. Not that I’m rubbing it in or anything.”

He watched her struggle to keep her eyes open and sighed, softening. “…Actually, go ahead. Get some sleep. I’ll be here when you wake up, and we can talk about sugar quills, chocolate frogs, or whatever else you feel like. You’ve earned it.”

Olivia smiled at Caspian. “So we’ll say that,” she yawned. “Just so you know, I don’t think you’re boring.” Then her eyelids got too heavy and she fell asleep. At first, everything was just calm and still. Then her dreams began to take shape…

Students whispering and pointing, then a full moon and Olivia began to transform in the middle of a hallway while all the students stared at her. She could make out Caspian’s pointing at her and saying, “See? She’s a WEREWOLF!”

“No,” Olivia muttered in her sleep. “No, no, no.” Then her mother appeared in front of her. Olivia stared. Her mother opened her mouth and said, “Why did you trust him?” in the most disappointed tone ever. Olivia screamed, not just in her sleep, and opened her eyes. She was sweaty and breathing laboredly as if she had just run a marathon.

It took her a moment to realize that it had only been a nightmare and that she was in the hospital wing. Her breathing slowly calmed down and Olivia reached shakily for the glass of water on the nightstand. She took a sip and then ran a hand through her hair, which was damp with sweat. “It was just a nightmare,” she told herself, then looked toward Caspian’s bed.
