Avery sighed deeply as she lay on her bed. A quill and a sheet of parchment carefully set down on her desk nearby. She had already tried to write a letter to Mikey multiple times but always came to a loss of words whenever she tried. She didn't really know what to say as the events of the day before replayed over and over in her head. The conversation. The hug.

She was lucky that no one stumbled into her room right at that moment. It was already embarrassing enough that she couldn't find the right words to write.

Eventually she stood up and sat down. Staring at the blank parchment lying on her desk. Carefully picking up her quill, she took in a deep breath and began to write.

Dear Mikey,

It's only the first day of summer and I miss spending time with you. Yesterday was a lot of fun. It felt nice to say those things and get them off my chest. And, so far, my mother still doesn't care enough to check in and see if her only daughter is alive. Which is probably the best welcome to summer gift I could have at the moment.

I know it's only been a day, but how has your summer been? For me, it's just been somewhat normal. Besides the fact that my grandfather is still not doing well. He's weaker than I thought and I'm afraid he may not live much longer.

But, enough about that. I don't want to ruin your summer by saying everything I'm worried about here. Summer's supposed to be a break from life.

I have to go since it sounds like my family is calling me to lunch. Bye!

Sincerely,

Avery

Avery quickly folded up the letter after a quick proof-read. Proud of what she had accomplished in such a short amount of time.

Once Avery found her family's owl, a majestic snowy white owl that belonged to her grandmother, she tied the letter to her leg and the owl took flight. Her wings glistening a bright white in the afternoon sun. Avery stood and stared in amazement as the owl flew away. She had always loved to watch that owl fly. She was graceful. Even in a storm.

Avery stayed there as long as she could. Well, until she heard Dylan and her aunt calling her to lunch again. She quickly walked back inside. Eager to read Mikey's reply.

Dear Avery

I got your letter this morning and I’m not kidding, I read it three times before I even got out of bed. Thanks for writing. It made the whole day feel better, just knowing you were out there thinking of me. I actually tried to write back earlier, but I couldn’t get it quite right. Then I spilled juice on the first draft (and of course KodoPodo ran right through it), so here’s round two.

It hasn’t even been a full week since we left Hogwarts, but it already feels like it was a lifetime ago. I keep catching myself reaching for my wand to turn off the light, only to remember, Muggle rules again. Everything here feels a little too normal. Too not magical.

Liverpool is the same as always, grey skies, gulls screaming like they own the place, and someone shouting about football even when there isn’t a match. I went to the corner shop with my dad yesterday, and for a minute, it felt like I’d imagined everything. Like the moving staircases and talking portraits and, well, you, were all just part of a really good dream. Then a bin lid flew off out of nowhere and I immediately looked around for a ghost. Old habits, I guess.

I’m really glad you opened up in your letter. You never have to pretend with me. If your mom still hasn’t checked in, yeah… that’s awful. But weirdly, I’m glad if it means you’re somewhere you actually feel safe. That matters more than anything.

And your grandfather… I’m really sorry he’s still not doing well. I know that kind of thing is hard to talk about, but I think it’s really special you get to be with him right now. If you ever want to share stuff, even the sad stuff, I’ll always listen. You don’t have to send perfect letters. You can just say what’s on your mind.

Not a ton happening here, really. I’ve been sketching here and there, mostly random stuff. I keep playing the same three songs on repeat and pretending they mean something (they probably don’t, but still). I got invited to play football with a few of my old mates, so I guess we’ll see how that goes. I feel a little different now, being back. Not in a bad way, just… not the same.

Anyway, write when you can. No pressure—I just really like hearing from you.

I miss you.
—Mikey

Dear Mikey,

I just received your letter this morning just after breakfast. It's nice to know I'm not the only one that didn't know what to write. Also, I guess Jasper isn't the only one being chaotic. You were right. He really was plotting his revenge.

Ever since I arrived home, he has refused to come out from under my bed. I guessed it was because he wasn't use to being here, but of course it wasn't. I think he's still upset about being stuck in the carrier. It was yesterday that it happened. I had just placed his bowl of food on the ground when he came at me and scratched. Ever since then he's been perfectly fine and roaming around the house meowing.

The scratch wasn't too bad. Just a shallow rake across my hand. Luckily, my aunt's a healer, so she was able to fix me right up.

Have fun with your football! I've never even played or heard of the sport, so you should teach it to me sometime. It sounds very interesting! I'm not sure what I'll do later. It seems so far that this summer may be a little boring, so your letters will always be the highlight of my day.

Miss you too,

Avery

Dear Avery,

You sent your letter at the height of my attempts (and failures) to repair the toaster. How difficult can it be, I wondered? Very difficult, it turns out particularly when you're accustomed to spells like Reparo and Scourgify. I quit after it began to smoke and went to sit down and read your letter instead. Much wiser choice on my part.

KodoPodo became interested in the owl again. He just keeps going around thinking that they are messengers for him, and well, perhaps they are. He stood by the window for ten minutes after it flew off, waiting for a response to his response. I can definitely empathize with him.

I'm relieved Jasper's out from under the bed. That scratch dose sound unpleasant, but I'm relieved your aunt was able to care for it. Can't really say I blame him, though. If someone confined me to a carrier for hours, I'd work up a bit of revenge myself. Not claws to the hand, perhaps, but I'd be perturbed.

And football, I'll give you a full demo once we're back at Hogwarts. Though we'll have to be resourceful on a pitch if we can't magic a courtyard into one. It's less magical than Quidditch, but there's a rhythm to it. A bit like music and shin bruises mixed together.

Not going to lie, this week's been. a bit rough. Not in a thunderstorm sort of way, more like in a slow fog that just won't clear. I guess I wrote and explained to you last time how normal it all is, and I keep hoping that’s going to be a good sign, but it isn't. There is quiet in this house now that wasn't present before. I was trying to ignore it until I was about to have a cup of tea and noticed that we were out of black tea.

I'll tell you more later, but for now I just wanted to thank you for writing. These letters are keeping me sane. Summer can be dull, certainly, but lonely too, and your letters make me feel like I'm not trapped in my head with ghosts of the year.

If you ever get lonely, just send me a letter me your top five favorite things that you miss about Hogwarts. Or strange things about your house. Or the dreams you've had. I don't care if it's stupid or profound, I just like to know what's going on in your head.

—Mikey

P.S. Tell Jasper I’m watching him. One wrong move and KodoPodo will challenge him to a duel. Probably lose. But the spirit would be there

Dear Mikey,

A toaster? Wow. Muggles have some interesting names for kitchen appliances. I don't think I've heard that word in awhile. My family's always used spells like Reparo, so sorry that I'm no help in the category of fixing things.

I can't wait for the day that you teach me football! I don't think I've ever played a muggle sport before, so beware. I'll probably be terrible. We always have the Courtyard or even the Quidditch Training Pitch to play since they are usually not too busy.

If football is less magical than Quidditch, then maybe I won't be as bad as I first though. Though I'm still not the greatest at Quidditch yet. I've still got this year to learn more, though! You should come watch a match sometime. I don't think I've ever asked this before. Do you plan on doing any sports at Hogwarts? I mean, we're doing the Quidditch club together, but are there any official sports you plan on doing?

I'm so sorry that it feels like that where you live. If you ever need someone to talk to, same goes for you. I'm always just a train ride or a letter away.

- Avery

P.S. I'll let him know! He'll start behaving if he hears that!

Dear Avery,

Alright, first off, when it comes to football. I promise I'll go easy on you unless, of course if you happen to be obscenely good and it's an actual showdown. Either way, already pictured us taking over the courtyard as a makeshift pitch, avoiding lost first years and trying not to break any statues.

The toaster remains dead. My dad is threatening to simply go out and purchase a new one, but I've set myself on a challenge now. I'm going to get it fixed before summer's out, no matter what it takes, including being the world's first toaster whisperer. To be honest, I do miss magic more than I anticipated. Every small chore appears to be five times harder without a wand. (Still unable to fold a fitted sheet correctly without complaining and wondering why these things were ever invented.)

I would love to go to one of your Quidditch games! You have to let me let me know when your first one is this coming term. I'll even make one of those cheering banners if you'd prefer, something silly like "Fly, Avery, Fly!" in sparkly pen. And as for joining something. I don't know. I enjoy flying, maybe I will sign up, who knows.

Things around here are somewhat improved this week. Not resolved but improved. I took a walk this morning, and it cleared my head somewhat. The air was salty-smelling, and I sat on the bench outside the bakery for a little while just watching people walking by. It centered me a bit.

I think I've been making an effort to tell myself that sometimes things don't make sense but go on anyway. Thanks for being so grounded recently. It is a great help. I don't know that I've ever said that quite right.

Dear Mikey,

From what you've said, sounds like our football match will be quite the scene! I can't wait to get back and finally do it! I'll probably end up making a tracker of how many days until I go back when August rolls around. It's just so exciting at Hogwarts.

I know that you'll get that toaster working. It may be stubborn, but I have the feeling that even thought it won the battle, it won't win the war. I can't even imagine life without magic. From what you've said, it doesn't sound easy. Maybe someday I'll try it out. It would be nice to just be Avery Gray instead of being known as the daughter of a prestigious pureblood family.

Walks are amazing! My favorite thing to do here is walk through the woods. Especially right after the sunrise. It helps me feel more alive and ready for the day.

I'm honored that you think I'm grounded. I don't think anyone's ever told me yet. Thank you.

- Avery

Avery,
It's crazy how quiet the flat can be when it used to be. The bakery is still crazy downstairs, customers rushing in, oven alarms shrieking, someone always yelling over the wrong change. But the flat above it feels hollow. Like something was taken out and hasn't quite returned yet. I guess you get that when the walls are used to holding more. There are some nice bits, anyway. I did get to meet up with a couple of my old pre-Hogwarts mates. It was embarrassing at first, you know, like putting on the clothes you've slowly outgrown, but it was good too. We had a kickabout in the park with a football and chatted. I didn't say much about school just that it was "big and mental and sort of amazing." Which I suppose does cover everything.

Dad’s taking me to a concert next weekend. It’s some old Muggle band he’s been obsessed with since he was younger, claims they’re “legends” even though I’ve only heard them on grainy vinyl. I’m mostly going to see him smile like a teenager again. It’s something to do. And I have heard the venue has some amazing fish and chips.

Also just received the camp package today. The owl came in about breakfast time and almost landed in my cereal. The drawstring bag's not half bad, and the candies disappeared before I even got a chance to read the pamphlet. Are you going to Summer Camp this year? Sounds. interesting. "Magic Without Borders" does have a nice ring to it, and I would not be against seeing you again before term starting. And then there is the Farm Expo. Cows with magic, perhaps? Let me know if you're going. I'll bring some more snacks and perhaps a sketchbook so you can see for yourself just how awful my "art" is in person.

Dear Mikey,

Quiet can feel very strange. Like a blanket has been draped over your past leaving just the ghosts of memories. Every time I stay in the house my parents have in London, it is all silence. Especially since they are always away at work. It's a horrible feeling. Especially when you're not used to it. At least you got to see your friends though! I don't have any friends still alive outside of school, so the only other people besides the adults in the house that I've seen are Lya and Dylan.

A concert? I don't think I've ever been to one! You'll have to explain it to me once you've gone! It sounds like a lot of fun! I hope you enjoy it!

I received the package to summer camp as well! Of course, the second I showed it to my father, he had to immediately disapprove saying that I should spend more time with my grandfather and stay here for the rest of the summer. Typical him to try and ruin my one chance to see you before school starts again. You should tell me about it when we get meet on the train again! I can't wait to hear what happened!

Dear Avery,

Your letter made me smile, even the bit about your dad being his usual thunderstorm self. I just wish he'd let you go to camp. What a tragedy that you'll be stuck at home while I'm out here getting to know people and unintentionally setting things on fire in front of them.

The concert with my dad was. actually amazing. I had no idea what was coming, being called a "legend" seemed like one of those cliché sounding things your parents might say that never actually comes to fruition. They were. There was something about the audience singing along in unison, everyone else knowing all the words but me, and the music being so loud it sounded like it rattled your bones in the good kind of way. I did not sing at first, but Dad sang, and that was the highlight. I had not heard him laugh so much in a while. I'm grateful I went just to see that.

We had fish and chips afterwards. Real chips too, thick ones. And it was all the better for being outdoors and half deafened by the sound systems. I still have the stub off the ticket. Perhaps I will give it to you when we get back. Something to convince you that it actually happened.

My summer camp brochure is still on my desk. I'm grabbing it and going over everything again like the brochure's just gonna somehow change or something. I'm a little apprehensive, won't deny it. I mean, what if I'm stuck in a tent with some individual who thinks sneezing Parseltongue is a thing? (Though seriously, if that's a thing, I need to see that.)

I wish you were going. I keep imagining us strolling through the grounds, sneaking off somewhere, mischief brewing and laughing. I'll try writing from there, perhaps beneath a tree or ducking from mystically magical goats or whatever "Magic Without Borders" has planned. Anyways I look forward to your next letter.

Mikey
