And a circus ain't a love story, and now we're both sorry

To say that the friendship between Alyssa Salinger and Evelynn Decipio had been strenuous as of late would be the understatement of the century. Between betrayal, self-deprecation, a mutual friend's maddening engagement, and a one-sided infatuation that had driven the infected party to brewing Love Potion Antidote lest she'd been dosed accidentally (or on purpose), it seemed that all the factors of the universe had been conspiring to unravel the tenuous thread between the two sixth-year girls since the instant of their singular, brief kiss in early August. Aly, in particular, had gone through about the same whirlwind of emotions as one felt during Side-Along Apparition - having been the unlucky infected, she'd experienced the fear and excitement of a new crush, then hopeless longing, then worry that it was untrue and in fact manufactured by a potion, then determination to prove it so, then disappointment that it had not been, then terror that it had not been, and finally a mix of frustration and fury over the last two months since the curly-haired Ravenclaw had shot back the antidote like it would have solved all of her problems at the fall ball.

Alas, it seemed to have only created new ones. Now Aly knew that the dopamine rush, the sweaty palms, the rapid fluttery heartbeat - all symptoms that occurred whenever the redheaded Gryffindor came near or even spoke in her general vicinity - were in fact natural, which meant there was no way to get rid of them. As such, she had taken to avoiding Eve, going so far as to turn tail in the corridor and flee when she saw a familiar scarlet bob bobbing her way, moving her seat to the other side of the classroom during all their shared lessons, and, of course, writing her Headliner articles in the safety of the Ravenclaw dormitories rather than at her assigned desk in the journalists' office. Unfortunately, there was one thing they shared that was so small as to be completely unavoidable - or rather, a person they shared. Winnie Harper, beloved by both, had asked both Eve and Aly to be bridesmaids in her upcoming wedding to the (likely loathed) Matthias Pride, clearly unaware of the fizzling sparks and bitter feelings simmering between them. Or maybe she was aware and just didn't give a dragon's ass about it, though that didn't much seem like her. Either way, wedding planning had forced Aly to interact with Eve more in the last week than she had all semester, and the brunette was sure nothing good was going to come of it.

Take, for instance, today. It had been agreed upon, following a frilly montage of bridesmaid-dress-shopping the previous afternoon, that they would meet here, just outside the door to the grounds, at this specific time, to take a walk together. Aly could not remember exactly who had suggested the outing - in fact, the whole conversation with the glowing girl was now rather a blur in her mind, an unfortunate side effect of a strong fancy - but she had definitely remembered the time and place, and now, as she approached the door from the inside, she found herself wiping sweaty palms on the soft, yet slightly scratchy, fabric of her flannel - a Muggle invention, yet like so many others, one Aly had grown to adore since first beginning trips into Muggle culture the year prior. She had thrown the patterned thing over a large, impossibly velvety hoodie in a dark grey shade, then paired it with black shorts and matching Muggle shoes over fleece leggings that appeared to be see-through, but were rather lined multiple times with a warm inside. It was December, after all, in Scotland. One could be both fashionable and snug at the same time.

Her hands sufficiently dried off, Aly reached for the door handle, taking a deep breath. One thing was for certain: no matter what happened today between her and Eve, Aly at the very least needed to confess her feelings for the ginger girl. If it ruined the friendship forever, so be it, but this whole three-ring circus of lies and avoidance had Aly dancing on a tightrope so high up in the sky she could no longer see the ground, and she would have rather jumped than fallen from it.

She opened the door.

𝒜s the winter holidays neared, Evelynn felt...well, she didn't particularly know how to feel. It had become increasingly common for her to remain at school over various holidays, that tendency only compounding as she earned an ever greater degree of the independence that came with nearing adulthood. Only two months of childhood remained to her, at least by wizarding convention. Perhaps that was why, reclined against a stone pillar in near the main entrance to Hogwarts castle with a freshly Janus-delivered letter in hand, Evelynn found herself on the edge of being swayed by its contents to join the throng of students that would be boarding the train back to London the next day. Stone grey eyes scanned the written contents once more, brows furrowed thoughtfully. There was something decidedly off about it.

It wasn't uncommon for her mother to express an almost obnoxiously cheery air in her salutations, but this seemed to go a step even further. As though the woman were manifesting a desperate hope that flitted farther out of her grasp. Perhaps that was to be expected. Her baby girl was growing up and, after all, there would only be one more opportunity to spend Christmas together before Evelynn graduated. Still, something just didn't sit quite right with her. Every time the lioness reread the letter, she half-expected new words to appear--a paragraph previously overlooked--that would explain the nagging feeling that there was something going unsaid.

Or maybe she was just looking for something about which to feel apprehension to distract from the fact that there was already enough of that to go around from her own end. Rocking her head back to press against the cold masonry, Evelynn lifted her gaze to the overcast sky, lips parting to exhale, breath condensing in a puff of mist that curled like fingers clawing for purchase upon nothing. The dread was already setting in, knowing that her mother would be quick to inquire about her social life:

"And how is the quidditch protege, the Young Mister Connor..?"

"What of...what was his name again? Perrin? Percules? That studiously handsome fellow..."

"Oh, what about the girl that came with him? The one with the stunning hair?"

"Or Marshall? Surely you two have made up by now...It really was a shame that you fell out. I quite liked his family..."

Everybody that Evelynn had exactly zero desire to discuss. Generally speaking, the lioness remained quite tight-lipped about her school experience and social sphere in order to avoid unnecessary prying. It had worked out well for her for most of her years. There was no need to lie if her mother simply didn't inquire. That was significantly more difficult to do when the aforementioned social contacts made a point to come visit in person, however. It was hard to pretend people didn't exist when her mother had been a primary witness to the contrary.

She could already feel her mother's disappointment as--one by one--the nearly senior student would have to either admit to having driven them all away once again, or evade the questions entirely. And what about Winnie? How could she possibly bring Harper up knowing it would likely ruin the holidays? Then again, how could she not? Granted, Evelynn could always dangle the bait about having a boyfriend. Perhaps if she was quick to mention the development of her relationship with AJ, her mother would simply die of relief and forget to question her about the rest of them. Of course, she could just... stay, and avoid that mess entirely--

The main entrance doorway pushed open just like it had a number of times already, but this time a familiar brunette emerged from within. Deft fingers hastily folded and tucked the letter out of sight and into the pocket of her skirt. Evelynn's breath hitched with @Aly Salinger's arrival as she fought a sudden urge to coil around to the other side of the pillar and attempt to go unnoticed long enough to slink away. In the company of her sister and the rest, the Gryffindor had managed to keep herself focused--on planning or dress shopping or whatever the task at hand may have been--to override her discomfort and keep interactions cordial and purposed In the absence of that, however, the reality of the past few months came crashing back. She could not so easily dismiss the hurt of Aly's avoidance. Nor the guilt of her own continued deceptions.

"Over here." This is for Winnie, she had to remind herself, fingers curling into fists to temper the tremble of her palms as she pushed herself off of the pillar. As much as her mind willed her to close the distance, however, her feet stayed firm, hesitant, half expecting Salinger to just turn tail and retreat the second she identified Evelynn's presence. Her expression remained guarded as her gaze swept over her petite counterpart, attempting to read her face.

Or that was the initial intent, anyway. As a former author of a Headliner fashion article, however, and ever a keen eye, Evelynn would be remiss to overlook Aly's attire. An auburn brow lofted skeptically at her apparent state of under-dress, not immediately identifying the leggings at her distance. Evelynn herself had dressed in a more obviously winter-appropriate attire: a long mustard yellow surcoat cinched at the waist over thick slate leggings and her usual laced chocolate knee-high boots with a matching chocolate infinity scarf and leather gloves. "Will you not be cold?"

"X" marks the spot where we fell apart
✰✰✰
Aly pushed her way into the sunlight, heavy wooden doors cast aside as if they were nothing but a scrap of parchment, fuelled by adrenaline, fear, and love all mixing together at once like the moste potente of potions. A rustling sound from nearby identified that she was not alone in the new out-of-doors just steps away from the entrance to the castle, and Aly's keen gaze jerked to Eve just as the redheaded girl shoved a scrap of parchment into her pocket as if she didn't want it to be seen. Keen Eye procked w/permission from Eve to roll, see below for rolls. "Over here," the other called out, like Aly hadn't immediately identified the shock of scarlet against white snow and grey stone the second she'd exited; like always, it was impossible to ignore her. She was the very air we breathe, all the life around us poured into a single sunny being. And the red hair and yellow coat, so obvious against the more muted colours of the outdoors, didn't help her to hide much, either.

Immediately, Aly's step faltered and she stumbled just upon seeing the object of her affection waiting so patiently for her to arrive. A flutter of thoughts broom-raced through her head, each bringing its own worry along with it: Am I late? How long has she been waiting? Am I even sure she's waiting for me, maybe it's someone else? Maybe AJ is going to show up? Are we sure she wants to talk to me, of all people? But these fears (or most of them, anyway) were quickly quashed by Eve pushing herself from the pillar upon which she had leant and staring at Aly with that beautiful, terrible, expectant storm-cloud gaze. Almost as if she were daring the girl to close the gap between them.

For a moment, Aly imagined doing just that, just running into Eve's arms, looping her own around the taller girl's neck and returning the kiss she'd been given so long ago. Lear's fears, what a thought. But that would surely ruin their friendship, and anyway Eve was in love with another, so she stamped that thought down just like she had every time she'd seen the redhead since the Fall Ball (and maybe even a bit before that). A normal, paced walk was necessary instead. Just one foot in front of the other, Salinger. There you go. Walk like a normal fuckin' person. She'll never be any the wiser.

Arriving by Eve's side, she could feel her freckles disappearing under a hot, heavy blush; at least it was bone-chillingly nippy outside, and her impossible-to-hide immediate reaction could simply be written off as a symptom of the cold and the snow. As if she'd noticed and done just that, Eve raised an eyebrow at Aly's outfit: "Will you not be cold?" And suddenly Aly regretted wearing comfortable clothes this morning; she shouldn't have done that, not when she had a whole wardrobe of fashionable do-nothings that she could have worn to impress the elegant elder lioness in her lovely attire. She could have done the fluffy white coat and matching earmuffs that made her blend in with the snow, or the navy blue sweater over patterned trousers, or even her bloody uniform for Merlin's sake - anything but the hooded sweatshirt, flannel, and fleece leggings. What she had thought this morning to be both fashionably rugged and softly comfortable suddenly degraded to the ugliest outfit one could have ever worn. Shoving her hands into the large pocket at her waist, Aly tried her best to mumble her way through a lowly spoken sentence: "I - er - they're fleece lined. Warmer than, uh, you'd think. Muggle culture, you know." And then she mentally kicked herself, because of course Eve knew. She'd grown up Muggle, after all. Just one of the many things that made her so interesting, so unique.

Eager to get the conversation off of her, for yes she wanted Eve to look at her but damn not like this, she nodded towards the pocket into which Eve had shoved the parchment. "What, er, were you reading there? We can - we can walk. I think." And with that she began to stroll, perhaps a bit hurriedly, as if she were trying to get away from the Gryffindor, because honestly, the farther she got, the less red her face would become.
