Blue Smoke
Ava entered the potions classroom, satchel limp at her side as she kept her head lowered as any shy innocent student would do. However, she was far from shy, and even farther from innocent. She walked gingerly, for fear that the wizard crackers she had carefully placed in her bag would snap and release smoke too early.
A new professor meant a new welcoming, which she seemed to be doing often. She barely spared him a glance as she entered, but she noted that his vibe was extremely off, immaculate and almost…fake. Weirdest of all, he had a dark pair of shaded glasses on his face, even though they were underground and inside. Neither space called for you to shield your eyes from unnecessary light, which begged the question of why the professor was wearing them in the first place. It was a strange space to wear them.
She kept her eyes glued on the cauldrons in front of her as she slowly moved through the class under the pretense of greeting students. As she moved through the classroom, at each cauldron she passed she dropped one of the crackers into the cauldron, sparing none as she moved closer toward the front of the room. Her plan was that when the students went to make the potion they had been instructed to make during class, they would go to add the ingredients and be met by a colorful explosion of blue smoke. Her smile grew just thinking about it.
Ava approached the professor’s desk, clutching four of the remaining crackers in her pocket as she pasted a bright smile on her face. “Hello, professor!”
As she lifted her hand into a wave, she purposefully knocked into the cauldron and blushed. “Omigosh, I’m so sorry!” She tried to readjust the cauldron frantically, and without pausing pointed toward the back of the classroom. “Someone is trying to break into your storeroom!”
Untrue, most students were already at their seats. In the moment of momentary distraction, she took the crackers from her pocket and quickly dropped them into the cauldron. The moment he went to demonstrate anything in the potion, they would explode. Worst case scenario, she would go run into the cauldron to force an explosion. She had a bounce in her step as she turned on her heel and returned to her seat, excited to see what would happen. Even her own cauldron hadn’t been spared, filled with two crackers. She didn’t mind getting pranked, and this way no one would blame her.
It seemed that the professor’s glasses would come in handy for once.

@Ava Winchect─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────"Hello, Professor!"
The words landed far too brightly, far too rehearsed.
Samuel didn't look up immediately at the source. He was aligning a stack of student parchment on his desk while placing them with deliberate precision. His thumb smoothing the corner of the topmost sheet. Only once the papers were in place did he lift his gaze towards the brightened chatterbox.
The red-tinted glasses on his face did not conceal the look beneath. Flat, unamused and incurious.
"Ms. Winchect," he replied with thin edge of civility in his voice. "Go find yourself a seat."
The pause before he spoke was hopefully long enough to register as warning. His voice carried no warmth. He had already made note of her delayed entrace, too delicate and too quiet. The gait of someone pretending to avoid attention while actively doing something that'd draw it. Performative, and he recognized performances when he saw them.
He was hoping to see her leave, but instead she bumped the edge of the cauldron with a theatrical flinch and a hand to her mouth.
The falsetto guilt was so brazen it bordered on offensive. She fumbled so badly and yet had the guile to continue with her words.
"Someone is trying to break into your storeroom!"
Samuel didn't so much as turn upon hearing that.
The storeroom was sealed with enough wards where even an adult would have a hard time breaking in without screaming, vomiting or weeping. Most would do all three and perhaps not in that order.
So she was lying, and quite badly at it.
He made no comment on it. His hands returned to the desk surface. "How unfortunate," he said, his tone flat. "Return to your seat, Ms. Winchect."
He resumed the lecture.
Or tried to.
The first bang came from the back with a hiss following it and then another. Then a series of pops and whines as if fireworks display had been drunkenly jammed into a cauldron. Students shrieked while some coughed and a few laughed.
Samuel's eyes did not so much as widen.
The glasses remain untouched as he took in the carnage.
A slow breath and a sharp click of his tongue followed the words, "Out," he said, "All of you, leave and make your way towards the grounds."
They scrambled.
And within a minute, the room was empty, save for one Samuel himself had decided to hold back.
Ava.
He walked towards her as he snapped his finger, casting a non-verbal Incidere Digitum at her. It was precise and effective.
One of her fingers vanished as if it had never existed. No blood, just sudden absence.
His hands folded behind his back,
"I do not appreciate performances in my class unless it furthers my instructions."
"That's one gone."
"Next time, it will be two. You're clever enough to do the math. Would you care to tell me what you thought you were doing or shall I begin removing things you'll find much more difficult to function without?" He wished he could remove her brain, but it didn't seem she had one.
The silence that followed was worse than shouting.
He meant every word.

Blue Smoke
As Ava waited for her carefully concocted plan to go into action, she smirked to herself. The look on the professor’s face would be priceless. Although he had never turned to look in the direction of his storeroom, he also hadn’t noticed the cracker being slipped into his cauldron. She was certain of it.
It happened all at once, a series of explosions set off throughout the room. A domino effect happened, each cracker setting off in an explosion of blue smoke. The students had a reaction even larger than the blasts themself. Some cheered for the chaos, others seemed terrified, and most laughed. Ava felt a sense of pride wash over her at her own success.
The professor dismissed the rest of the class, her classmates filing out of the room obediently. Ava herself leaned against her desk casually, looking unapologetic as she did so. Professor Sauber approached, and although she couldn’t see his eyes, she was surprised to see that he didn’t seem very angry.
Ava was startled as he suddenly raised his hands into a snap. She offered a confused expression, then looked down at her tingling hand to find…
She was missing a finger.
She scrambled back, holding her hand in front of her face in horror. After a moment of horror at her missing middle finger, she raised her eyes to stare at him. She didn’t even know what he had said, consumed by absolute shock.
“What. Did. You. Do.” Each word was short, laced with all of her fourteen-year old fury.
She raised her hand with the missing finger to flip him off, but there was nothing there to hold up. Angrily, she lowered her hand and glared at him.
“Put it back.” She demanded.
