Cassian yawned as he slipped into the first open seat he could find at the Gryffindor table, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Though he greatly enjoyed breakfast, he had never been — and likely never would be — a morning person. He reached half-blindly for a slice of toast, nearly knocking over a pitcher of pumpkin juice in the process. A nearby second-year snorted into their bowl of porridge. Cassian didn’t rise to it, although the tips of his ears flushed an unattractive violet. He slumped forward onto the table with a dramatic groan and let his curls tumble into his face.

He had survived nearly all of his first year. Only a few weeks remained before he could board the Hogwarts Express and escape back home to the warm embrace of his mother and the comfort of his own bed. He had enjoyed himself, of course — Hogwarts was thrilling, there was no doubt about it — but Cassian looked forward to no longer having to spend every waking hour buried in textbooks or scrambling to complete the next assignment. Of course, he could have allowed his grades to slide in exchange for an easier go at it, but Cassian had been hardwired since birth to excel. His father wouldn’t accept any less.

Outside the windows, summer sunlight streamed through the frosted glass, catching in the rising steam from the porridge and tea arrayed on the long table. Everything felt muffled, as though the castle itself hadn't quite woken up yet. As Cassian sat upright again and began absentmindedly buttering the toast he’d finally obtained, his mind drifted — as it often did in the quiet in-between moments where there was nothing to distract him — to the estate back home.

There had always been breakfast there too, naturally. Just quieter, more formal. Less chaotic shouting and owls swooping in to deliver mail — well, there had been owls too, of course. Cassian’s father was far too important a man to be unavailable during something as trivial as breakfast. Everything had been perfectly ordered: polished silverware, porcelain teacups, and his mother humming a waltz while choosing her jam. Cassian could remember sprinting barefoot down the wide staircase, hair sticking up at every angle, trying to escape the latest governess with a half-buttoned shirt and stolen spoon of marmalade.

No matter how much fun he had at Hogwarts — cheering and whooping at Quidditch matches or exchanging notes with his friends in class — Cassian would always cherish the memories of home. They belonged to the best parts of his childhood, carefully preserved in golden light. Still, he could admit that Hogwarts suited him in ways the estate never had. As a boy, his world had been remarkably contained. Playmates were few and far between, mostly the children of other pureblood families, acquaintances of his father, or old society connections. Even then, they appeared only for scheduled visits every few months at most. It had made for quite a solitary upbringing. And yet Cassian had always been a buoyant child — bright, sunny, irrepressible. Still, Hogwarts had felt like a breath of fresh air after so many years spent in stiff social events and starched collars.

Cassian wondered vaguely about those playmates that he had left behind in the gilded halls of memory. They had spent hours traipsing through the numerous rooms on the estate and giggling as they sprinted through the hedge maze they were definitely not supposed to be in without an adult. Most of them were likely already attending Hogwarts or another magical institution by now. Perhaps he’d ask his mother for their addresses once he returned home, maybe reach out over the summer.

Finally remembering his abandoned toast, he took a bite and reached for a mug of tea that had appeared beside his elbow. He sipped it gratefully and scanned the room through sleep-lidded eyes, watching the tables slowly fill up.

summary, this thread is happening on JUNE 11TH, 2025, in the MORNING with @CASSIAN MONTELISE BYRNE / wc: 646.

Mornings were Harlan's favorite time, specifically the moments before the sun rose and the common room was silent. He was an early riser, it'd been that way since he moved to Germany and lived with his grandparents who never slept past first light. That mentality forced the young teenager awake, and despite being back at Hogwarts, which is what he wanted — Harlan yearned for the pieces of his homeschooling that brought him so much joy. The Gryffindor longed for the smell of lemon in the morning tea his Oma made, his grandfather grumbling about the skewed journalistic integrity of some of the articles he read in his morning Wizard news, and the privacy of his room where he had tons of letters to Harlow about how Hogwarts was going.

She was around, but Harlan had made the hard decision to have her not bother or check in on him too much. Surely, the company of his sister was well-welcomed but she had made herself a name, a friend group, and rhythm at Hogwarts that Harlan needed to do as well. It wasn't fair to have her worry about him, and so he ensured to allow her to be and he would forge his own way too.

With his broomstick in hand, Harlan found himself to a corner of the Gryffindor common room where with enough effort, the wizard could sneak his way from having to walk down the stairs of the castle and mounted his broom while tipping himself over to fall from the tower right as the sun was rising into the Scottish sky. This was the best view of the castle, too. Harlan loved to do a single lap to breakfast taking a wide perimeter of the school grounds to help hone his broom racing skills, especially after the embarrassment of the last Broom Racing game against Ravenclaw.

There was a lot to love about the Castle, sure. Harlan loved the freedom (or perception of) that he could freely explore most of the castle without supervision. Sure, there was the errant scolding of not going to Hogsmeade or the Forbidden Forest, but he'd just take the detention if it arose. From what he heard, the punishment was usually easy enough that it was worth it, if they were perceptive enough to catch a student. Besides, he also saw the Gryffindor prefects and they seemed like folks who would bend the rules for a favor.

The buzz of the morning continued to amplify as Harlan flew himself through the pillars of the aqueducts and rounded his way to the Race Tracks before finding his way to a soft place to land near the grounds so that he could walk into the Castle for breakfast.

Was this prohibited? He wasn't sure but he'd just keep doing it until he got in trouble.

Broomstick in hand, Harlan nimbly dodged a gaggle of Hufflepuff first years who turned the corner sharp and almost slammed into him while he jumped to the side and continued his way inside. The Great Hall already filled to the brim with students coming and going, the spread each morning had always been so vast and diverse to accomodate the difference in cultures and food preferences for the students.

As he made his way to the Gryffindor table, robes tossed over his shoulder while he was dressed in a casual fit , the second year paused for a moment as he noticed a curly-haired Gryffindor that looked eerily familiar. He'd spent far too many birthdays and play dates with Cassian for him to not realize exactly who had been sitting there looking tired? defeated? Harlan wasn't certain.

Without skipping a beat, the teenager moved closer to his target and grabbed a lock of the boy's hair and gave it a slight tug. " Surprise Cas. " And if it wasn't him, it was enough enough to apologize.
