Pet Inclusion at Hogwarts By Xiomara Torres
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────
With May flowers comes National Pet Month, and I for one am thrilled to be able to talk to you all about pets. The inclusion of pets at Hogwarts seems to have changed over the years at Hogwarts. Traditionally, students came to Hogwarts with one of five creatures.
x────────────────x
x
x────────────────x
x
x────────────────x
The first is owls. These are great for communication purposes, allowing students to send their loved ones back home regular messages. There is a huge variety when it comes to these friendly birds: everything from the Eastern Screech Owl, which is very small, to the very large Great White Owl. There is an owl to suit every price range, including the rare Morepork Owl,

which is one of the most expensive ones.

The second is cats, which are commonly associated with witchcraft—especially in the Muggle world. In Issue #40’s “U-Name It, Unique It” article by Aly Salinger, cats ranked as the most popular pet! This isn’t surprising given just how many breeds are available.

The third is toads, which are one of the cheapest pets available. Some may consider them to be slimy and slippery but they come in several breeds and students enjoy running after them as they jump around. Then we have the rats as the fourth option, which are also quite cheap. Like toads, they can also hide in your pocket or bag if you want to sneak them into a place! These pocket-friendly companions may not be for everyone, though. If you enjoy chasing your pet through the halls, then the fifth option might be for you! Pygmy Puffs are known for their rolling abilities and floofliness, which get them the attention of anyone who likes cute things.
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────
However, in recent years, Hogwarts has become more accepting of change—not only in their student population but also in the companions that students are allowed to bring. The number of pocket-friendly companions has increased quite drastically. Did you know that you can now purchase lizards and spiders as pets too? Both will set you back quite a bit, but they are great options for someone who wants something small, though both of those are quick and may end up running away and hiding somewhere in your dorm if you’re not careful. Be wary of your spider around those Pygmy Puffs—they might think they are a snack! Both of these are likely quite easy to lose in the castle too but if you get them a little tank, that will help! You can purchase an Enchanted Heat Rock from Magical Menagerie too that gives them somewhere warm to sit. Lizards also love their Sweet Leaves!
x
If you’re not big on them then fear not; there are bunnies available. These are great if you’re looking for something cute and cuddly but they do require quite a bit of attention! Leave them alone for too long and you may return to ripped bedsheets. Why not get them a Pet Bed of their own though? Now, ferrets may not be for everyone, but they do sleep for most of the day so they’re perfect if you’re worried about leaving them alone whilst you’re in class. I would recommend picking up some Ferret Chew Treats whilst you’re at the store—they’ll love you!

bunnies, ferrets, and half-crups

The newest pet to be welcomed into the school is the half-crup! These are magical dogs and they are incredibly cute but they are also the most expensive pet available. Right now, the only crup allowed is the Wexford Half-Crup, which is similar to a Jack Russell Terrier in appearance! You can also pick up a Self-Walking Leash from the Magical Menagerie, which will help you walk your half-crup if you’re busy studying!
x────────────────x
x
x──────────────────────────────────x
And my personal favourite is the fish option! Muggles often have goldfish in a glass bowl, and they are super easy to look after. The Golden Veiltail is also very cheap but I would suggest getting an Enchanted Fish Carrying Case to carry your new companion around in—and why not consider joining the Fish Club if you have one? We decorate our fish tanks and such in meetings! You can take them for walks in their carrying cases!

The Magical Menagerie also houses some snakes but I would not recommend one of those unless you know how to speak to them. Nonetheless, with this huge variety of pets—each with multiple breeds—there is literally something for everyone! If you do not have an animal companion, be sure to visit the Magical Menagerie in the summer holidays and get yourself a new friend!

And then arrange pet playdates with everyone! They are a great way to meet new people, and with such a good variety of options, there is no excuse not to have one!

Overworked, Underpaid, And It's My Fault
───────────────────────────────────────==by Dorion Anderson
My fellow students, my sixth year has been one of reckoning.
========
I have spent a lot of time exhausted, crying, staring at a wall, letting my eyes glaze over, and staring at textbooks and assignments half done. It’s honestly been really hard. I say this not to strike fear into the lower years’ hearts and minds and not to commiserate with upper-years who know this song and dance all too well.
= =
I honestly don’t know what the purpose of this is exactly; I’m just using this as a place to share a story that I think too many of us deal with in silence and secrecy. I think a lot of us feel like we can’t be honest about our struggles. Especially as a Muggle-born, I feel like I have to grin and bear it because I have access to this beautiful world that others don’t. Shouldn’t I be doing everything?
======Image posted by the member

Image posted by the member============
The answer, in short, is no. At the start of the sixth year, I added another one of my roles back that I’ve held before. I became a prefect again! I was incredibly excited while also incredibly nervous. I had felt like I had failed in this role again, I didn’t want to leave my Head of House or my housemates lacking in good leadership. Not to toot my own horn, but I do think I’ve been doing alright. If you disagree, please don’t tell me (unless you’re Professor Browne, then that makes sense). However, this meant I was a prefect, I was a writer for the Headliner, I was on the broom racing team, and I was part of the healing internship. Not only this, I was a student, a boyfriend, and a friend. It was a lot.

By doing everything, I was getting minimal enjoyment and knowledge from it all. I was exhausted and my performance suffered in the things I once loved. Everything became a chore, and I was tired. My reality check came in the form of my boyfriend and I feeling like we were falling apart because I never had time for him. It was a bad, bad time. But, it was the reality check that I needed. And don’t worry, Elsi and I are still together.
=
So I dropped broom racing and the healing internship. I’m so much better for it. I feel like I have time to breathe now, to do things I enjoy. I hate to say it, but this will be my last Headliner article as I drop this from my schedule too. It has been a pleasure and a joy writing for all of you, my dear readers. I want to enjoy my last year of Hogwarts. Go on dates with my boyfriend (gross, I know), paint, lay in the grass, study without wanting to cry, sleep in on the weekends, and hang out with my friends.
x
=
There’s plenty of opportunity, plenty of things to do. Manage your schedule and your own mind. We really shouldn’t be exhausted, sad, and stressed all the time. Reach out to your friends, your Head of House, or a trusted professor. These people are here to help you and support you. It’s ok to drop some things; you don’t have to do everything. You have seven years here; do one thing a year to explore your options and stick with what really makes you happy.
=

Don’t exhaust yourself, my friends; I promise it isn’t worth it. I’m so much happier doing less; I can enjoy the little activities I do even more than I did before.

Magical and Muggle Meals: Drinks of the Wizarding World
by Aly Salinger

As the weather gets warmer and we students move in droves to spend more time outdoors, it’s best to bring some beverages with us to drive off dehydration! Though water’s quite refreshing and butterbeer is a traditional favourite, why not sip some other student-friendly drinks to provide both flavour and hydration while you’re lounging by the shores of the lake or sunbathing atop the viaduct? Here we’ve provided a few different options for you to try!

══════════════════════════
Gillywater
══════════════════════════
Serves: 16
Time: 5-30 minutes

Image posted by the member

Ingredients:
▫ 1 gallon sparkling or still water
▫ 1 cucumber
▫ 2 limes
▫ ½ cup mint

──────────────────────────
Directions
──────────────────────────
𝟭| Using your wand (*knife or peeler), carefully peel the cucumber in thin strips until you reach the seeds and discard the seedy middle core. Place these thin strips, skin included, in the water and stir.
𝟮| Carefully zest and juice the limes into the water, ensuring that no seeds or pith fall in. Discard the juiced shells.
𝟯| Shred or chop the mint and add to the water. Stir the whole thing well.
𝟰| Optionally, you may allow the drink to steep for up to 30 minutes before serving; the longer it steeps, the stronger the cool, refreshing flavour will be!
𝟱| Otherwise, serve immediately!

──────────────────────────
══════════════════════════
Pumpkin Juice
══════════════════════════
Serves: 6
Time: 5 minutes

Image posted by the member

Ingredients:
▫ 32 ounces apple juice
▫ 10 ounces peach, pear, or apricot juice
▫ 6 tablespoons pumpkin purée
▫ ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
▫ ½ teaspoon vanilla extract**
▫ Ice (optional)

──────────────────────────
**As has been said before, do not attempt to extract this from Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans.
──────────────────────────
Directions
──────────────────────────
𝟭| Add all ingredients to a large pitcher and mix well.
𝟮| Add ice to individual goblets and divide contents of the pitcher amongst the goblets. Enjoy!
──────────────────────────
══════════════════════════
Cherry Soda
══════════════════════════
Serves: 4
Time: 20 minutes

Image posted by the member

Ingredients:
▫ 4 cups black cherries
▫ 1 cup water
▫ 1 cup sugar from a Sugar Shrub (*granulated sugar)
▫ 2 tablespoons lemon juice
▫ Sparkling water
▫ Ice (optional)
▫ Cocktail umbrellas (optional)
*Muggle alternative

──────────────────────────
Directions
──────────────────────────
𝟭| Place a medium-sized cauldron over low heat and add cherries, water, sugar, and lemon juice. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves entirely.
𝟮| Use a wooden spoon to smash the cherries against the side of the cauldron and release the juice within, then increase your flame to a medium heat until the juice begins to bubble. Allow to boil for ten minutes, still stirring on occasion.
𝟯| Take off the heat and allow to cool slightly, then strain the liquid syrup from the solids . Set solids aside for consumption elsewhere!
𝟰| Add the syrup and ice to individual goblets, then pour sparkling water into each goblet and top with an umbrella; this garnish was popularised in the late 1990s by former Hogwarts Charms professor Filius Flitwick.
𝟱| Stir to your liking and serve!
──────────────────────────
══════════════════════════
Otter’s Fizzy Orange Juice
══════════════════════════
Serves: 4
Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:
▫ Still water
▫ 8 tablespoons sugar from a Sugar Shrub (*granulated sugar)
▫ 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
▫ 20 ounces orange juice
▫ 4 ounces sparkling water
▫ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (**see above)
▫ 2 ½ tablespoons dragon milk half-and-half (*cow half-and-half)
▫ Ice (optional)

──────────────────────────
Directions
──────────────────────────
𝟭| Prepare a sugar rim station by setting out two shallow dishes. Fill the first with water, and in the second, combine sugar and pumpkin pie spice thoroughly.
𝟮| For each individual goblet, turn it upside down and dip the rim first in the water and second in the sugar-and-spice, then turn right side up again to dry. Add ice to each goblet, if desired.
𝟯| Now prepare the drink itself. Mix the vanilla extract with the half-and-half, and divide the mixture evenly amongst the four goblets.
𝟰| Mix orange juice and sparkling water, then divide the mixture evenly amongst the four goblets.
𝟱| Stir, if desired, and serve!
