I grew up in a small coastal village not far from a hill worthy of hiking on. The sway of the trees, the soft sunset on the water, and the fog in the morning were enough to get me out of bed. Not to mention Mum’s great ability to make a perfect cup of black tea. At home, I lived with my father and mother as an only child, and my grandparents visited occasionally. Gram-Gram died of old age when I was four, and Papa when I just turned five. After Gram-Gram’s death, Papa decided that he couldn’t waste any time he had, so he moved in with us temporarily. He read me sweet tales of magical gardens and dreamy valleys to help me fall asleep. That was always the best part of my day. After Papa died, Dad showed me written stories of his own, and I was amazed. I made several stories while sitting on the beach, and several more while visiting my favorite ice cream shop. I was homeschooled for a while, but my parents decided it would be good for me to get some socialization as an only child. At school, I met my best friend.
When I was eight, I was at the top of my class. I got things done when they were assigned, and I put my best effort into every test or assessment. Despite being blessed of these traits, I would get burnt out, and I would become grumpy or snappy to anyone who said a word to me. My friend Layla seemed to be the only one who understood my outbursts. Others would complain and say I had nothing to get angry about, and they would make rude remarks like “What, did you get the bonus question wrong?”
Well, I thought that Layla understood. I thought she listened intently when I had something going on because she cared, but she only listened so closely so she could laugh about it with her other friends. Unfortunately, I had to figure that part out on my own. I despised her disloyalty.
Since then, I’ve had to choose my friends wisely.
One day, I came home from school, and I was secretly distraught. I had ruined a group project, because I messed up during a presentation, and I had a terrible feeling in my stomach. I couldn’t cry. I couldn’t. I decided to make some tea, since Mum always said it helps. As I was reaching for the sugar, the jar flew up and shattered onto the ground. My parents froze, and so did I. I didn’t know what to say, but Mum did. Her way of words comforted me, and my Dad allowed in some humor that meant, “It’s okay!” That was when I had my first encounter of accidental magic.
When I turned eleven, on a rainy Tuesday, I received my beloved Hogwarts letter.
