Gabby walked along the school corridors with two books under the crook of her left arm, Magical Drafts and Potions and the Book of Spells. She had just attended a Potions and Charms class, both of which had left her tired and exhausted.
Gabby was normally good at Potions, and looked forward to those lessons in the basements, but this time the girl sitting next to her though herself an expert in the subject, and kept advising Gabby to do things differently. There was nothing Gabby hated more than someone who thought they were amazing, so after trying to ignore the girl's boasting tones for half an hour, she had finally snapped, and told the girl that she should 'just shut up, won't you?'. Charms had always been a struggle though, boring to the bone, so no surprises there.

Walking down the corridors, Gabby tried to keep her spirits high, but it was hard, with the taxing day she'd had already. She could feel her eyelids drooping, and try as she might, she couldn't manage to keep them open. Suddenly, her books dropped out of her hand, and fell to the ground with a bang.
Cursing, Gabby reached down to grab her books, and tucked the Book of Spells under her arm again. But where was her Potions book? Gabby scoured the ground, trying to find it, but she couldn't find the green and purple cover anywhere.

The corridors were alive with the chatter of wizards and witches as they walked to and from their classes. Amongst these students was a Gryffindor girl, walking and talking to her housemates as they travelled to the transfiguration classroom.
The flow of the room made it easy to spot something amiss; A girl in Slytherin green dropping her books in the hall, her potions book sliding across the floor little ways away. She could have left the girl to her own devices and pick up her own books- after all, she had a class to go to, and she'd rather not be scolded for being late... But Sylvie never really was the kind of person to ignore things. Telling her friends that she'd catch up with them in the classroom, she went and picked up the girl's book so that she could give it back to her.

"I think you missed this one," Sylvie said, holding the book out in front of her for the stranger to take. She tilted her head a bit. The girl looked to be a first year, like her, with a familiar face. If only she wasn't so bad putting names to faces. "Y'know, I think I've seen you in class before. What's your name again?"

"Thanks," said Gabby gratefully as she grabbed the book and tucked it back underneath her arm where the other book lay. Her helper, a fair-skinned girl with light red hair and colourful nails, then tilted as she looked at Gabby, looking confused.

"Y'know, I think I've seen you in class before. What's your name again?"
"My actual name is Gabriela," she told the girl. "But only adults call me that. Everyone else calls me Gabby." She peered closely at the girl, wondering if she too had seen the girl before. She looked like a First Year, had a light dusting of freckles over her skin, and soft, expressive brown eyes. It was possible that they'd seen each other before, but Gabby wasn't sure.
"We might have classes together," she said slowly, still thinking about the subject. "But I'm really bad with remembering things like that. Well, actually, I'm bad at remembering things in general, I always seem to forget things, no matter how hard I try."

Gabby wasn't the type of person to thank others, she preferred to do things alone, to not rely on anyone and be independent. But, this girl had been really nice to her, and it was the right thing to do.
"And," she said sheepishly, "Thanks for helping me. I guess I've just had a tiring day, that's why I dropped them, I think.

As she listened to Gabriella talk, she nodded, making a mental note of her name and face, just in case they saw each other again sometime the future; Which they doubtlessly would. There were only so many Slytherin first years, after all. She wouldn't resent that, anyhow. This Gabriela girl sounded nice enough!

"Oh, what a neat name! Well, it's nice to meet you, Gabby- Properly at least. I'm Sylvie. Gryffindor, of course." She grinned and placed her hands on her hips, proudly displaying her crimson-accented robes.
At the uttering of a "thank you," Sylvie gave a thumbs up. "It was my pleasure! We all have those types of days, you know. I tripped over my own robe just this morning. Talk about embarrassing..." Her hand reached up to rub the back of her neck, a bit awkwardly as she spoke of her blunder.

Shifting the subject a bit, she recomposed herself, clearing her throat before she spoke Once more. "So, which class are you off to now? I was making my way down to the potions classroom before I stopped to help you." The girl rocked back and forth on her heels. It seemed as though she never actually stopped moving, always fidgeting with her hands or messing with her clothes in some way.

"Class? I'm off to Astronomy," Gabby said, "A class that I am horrible at, by the way. So much staring and not enough doing, in my opinion. But I guess some people like doing that. I do not know how you could enjoy that class, but each to their own. For me, it is the worst subject out there."

Realizing how much she had just spoken, Gabby stopped suddenly, not wanting to sound over talkative in front of this new acquaintance. To be honest, Gabby was relieved that she had met someone as friendly and welcoming as Sylvie in the midst of such a crazy and stressful day. On the other hand, Gabby started to think, what is so bad with talking? And if Sylvie was as nice as she seemed, shouldn't that make her talk more, not less?

"My favourite is Potions," she started cautiously, wondering if Sylvie will react negatively to Gabby talking more. "You are always moving, and never staying still. Even though it can be tricky, I like it either way. I know it's a bit stereotypical, me being a Slytherin and all, but it honestly is my favourite class. Do you have a favourite class?

"Astronomy isn't all bad," Sylvie shrugged. She'd never really struggled in that class, usually paying attention. Back in the muggle world, she rather enjoyed learning about space and all of its wonders. Black holes, gas giants, other galaxies and more. Nebulas were a favorite subject of interest for her, though they had yet to discuss that in class. "I actually like the class a lot. I think it's pretty cool, learning about other planets and stuff. Even learning about our planet can be fun. Especially when you think of how much the Earth has evolved over the years."

Sylvie paused for a second to think about Gabby's prior question. Her favorite subject... She knew that someday, her favorite would be the Care of Magical Creatures class, but no matter how much she taught herself, that class technically wasn't in her schedule yet. Finally she landed on her second choice.

"Definitely charms. I think that's probably my best class. Defense Again the Dark Arts is fun too, learning about all the crazy stuff that goes on in the Dark Arts. I think my worst class has to be history. I find it just," she tapped her chin trying to think of a way to describe her feelings. "I don't know. It's better than muggle history, but it's still so... So boring to me. I can hardly pay attention."

Sylvie liked Astronomy, and while Gabby was the complete opposite, she respected her new acquaintance's interests, and the difference between the two didn't bother her. It did bother other people, she knew that, but if Gabby was friends only with people who were similar to her in terms of personality, she wouldn't have much at all. Friend? She thought suddenly, realized what she had just thought. Do I think of her as a friend? Well, she seemed nice, that was for sure.

"I like Defense Against the Dark Arts too!" She said quickly, smiling. "Charms, not so much. A bit too much listening in my opinion. But I really enjoy Defense Against the Dark Arts too, it's fun isn't it? And yep - I totally agree. There is way to much talking in history. Way too much."
"And sometimes... it just depends on the teacher, if I like the class or not. Like houses. You might really like your house because you really like the people in your house, or you might not, if you don't like the people in your house."
Gabby took a quick look at Sylvie, and caught sight of her red and gold tie.
"Like, your Gryffindor right?"
