Hello there, cat
It had taken Jake around a month to get comfortable enough in the hallways that he could reliably find his way back to the common room from class without ever getting lost at all - it was harder than it looked with all of the moving staircases and stuff. He could even go back all by himself now without having to follow around one of his classmates, though he still preferred to walk amongst the group where it would be harder for bullies to find him and get him by himself.
Today though, he had bent down to tie his shoe and when he'd finished and stood up again he had found himself all alone. Not another kid in sight. He was going to have to walk back to the common room on his own today, whether he liked it or not.
He passed a couple other boys and girls in the halls as he walked, but he kept his head down. He didn't want anybody to give him any notice. At times like that it was good being really little. If you stayed quiet and didn't do anything to make people look at you sometimes they looked over you like you weren't even there. But when Jake turned the corner, something caught his eye and made him look up again.
A cat!
Jake paused where he was, and watched the beautiful animal, transfixed. It was so cool that Hogwarts let people bring their pets...he wished HE could have had a pet too. Having a cat at Hogwarts would have been the best. The cat was with a boy that Jake didn't think he really knew - though he seemed kinda familiar...Jake stood against the wall and watched the two of them from a distance following quietly. He just wanted to get a better look at the kitty, but was much too shy to approach. He would just watch for a little more....then he would go right back to Hufflepuff

Hello there, cat
"Awww, come on Loki, you can do it!"
Dan was playing with his kitten, Loki. An Egyptian Mau baby, he was SO CUTE. He was using one of the many toys he'd bought; a dancing trio of feathers on a highly bendy, bouncy thin rod. He would bring it down and jiggle it, causing Loki to try and grab it with little paws. Dan would keep dancing it all over the place, giving Loki a little workout, and just delighting in the cuteness.
Then, Dan let the baby have it, and he leaped up and grabbed the feather ball, bringing it back down with baby claws.
It became apparent that Loki did not plan past this, and had no idea what to do with it. But, he was not about to give it up, so he tried biting it with little baby kitten teeth.
Dan reached over and started getting the little stomach with two fingers.
"Awwww. You are just the most adorable little baby boy in the entire world. The most perfect kitten there is."
Dan eventually put the toy down, and picked up Loki, and began the cuddles. Loki lovingly rubbed his head against Dan's face, the bond formed already.
He then put Loki down, so as not to freak him out, and Loki began rubbing up against him. Dan tried to keep the giggles in, as he tickled Dan's feet with his cute furry kittyness.

Hello there, cat
A little jealously, Jake watched the boy and cat play. The kitty was so adorable it was hard not to squeal with delight at just watching him. The kitty was playing with a toy, and Jake loved seeing him have a good time. If HE had a kitty, he would play with him all day long and he'd NEVER get bored. He was happy that this kitty had an owner that liked to play with him too and loved him a lot. He imagined that it was probably a happy kitty, that got lots of food and attention, and lived a happy life.
Jake found himself drawing closer without meaning to, trying to get a better look at the cat. He couldn't help himself, animals were his favorite thing in the world. And he had never been able to have one himself so just watching the cat close-up was a treat.
As the kitty rubbed against Dan's feet, and the older boy tried not to giggle, suddenly a giggle DID ring out in the hallway - a high-pitched little giggle from Jake. Jake's grin faded away fast though when he made the sound. His face turned red with embarrassment and he stared down shyly at the ground, too close to make a break for it before he was noticed.

Hello there, cat
Dan smiled at Loki, until he heard a giggle. For a split second, he thought that came from the kitten, but he quickly saw that it came from a little boy.
At first he didn't, but within a few seconds, Dan recognized him as the little pumpkin boy from the Masquerade Ball fiasco. The one who apparently was lied to, and was told that a masquerade ball was a costume party. The one that he was pretty sure was the one who did nothing but curl up in a ball and cry when the half giants attacked.
When Loki saw this new person watching him and his human master, he scurried behind Dan's feet, being a shy kitten boy. He peeked out from between his bare ankles, keeping an eye on this other human, in case he tried to do something sudden.
Dan decided to initiate first interactions.
"Hey. Aren't ye the pumpkin boy from the masquerade ball? Don't think I ever got yer name."
As usual, Dan did nothing to mask his accent.
He was also puzzled. If he wanted to be around him and Loki, why was he just standing there, secretly watching them like a creep? This made very little sense to Dan.

Hello there, cat
Jake covered his mouth with his hands, but it was too late. The older boy had turned around. Jake lowered his head. The look on Jake's face was just like the look on the kitty's, as the shy little boy stared at the floor, unable to look directly at the boy who had noticed him. Unfortunately, Jake didn't have anybody's legs to hide behind, but he sorta wished he did right now.
The boy asked if Jake was the pumpkin boy from the ball.
"Um...y-yes," Jake mumbled, fumbling with his robes, his face growing redder. People still remembered him just 'cause of that...he really wished they wouldn't. The ball was a bad memory for lots of reasons - the fire and the chaos. It still frightened him. But even through that he also still remembered arriving to the ball and having everybody stare at him. Hearing people laugh...
Wait...the ball...
That's when he remembered the voice...the accent...the face....from the ball....it was....
"Oh...! Y-you..." Jake looked up now, and took a step closer. It was the boy from the ball...! The one who had made him a mask with magic and hid his face. Jake felt a surge of gratefulness.
"U-um. I...I'm Jake. Thank you...um...for what you did at the ball." Jake said softly but gratefully. He still blushed shyly, but he was feeling a little less afraid. This boy had been nice to him before. He had helped him. He took another step forward. "U-um...what's his name...?" Jake asked curiously, pointing at the kitty.

Hello there, cat
Dan was surprised. How could he have possibly recognized him?
Then he remembered. His accent. His hair. His bare feet. Of course the boy recognized him.
"Well, nice ta meet ya, Jake. Name's Dan. Dan Palmer. And this-"
Dan bent down and picked up the kitten.
"-Is Loki. The best and cutest kitten boy baby in the world."
Loki seemed as though he was less than happy with the idea of meeting this other human that was not his owner. As an Egyptian Mau, Loki didnt make friends with new people easily or immediately.
Dan had to wonder why this kid was acting so shy. Maybe he was embarrassed about the pumpkin costume debacle, but Dan knew about it already, and he knew that Jake knew that he knew, so what was the problem? Or was that the problem in the first place?
Dan put the baby back down, and Loki scurried between his feet again. The fur tickled again, and Dan let out a giggle.
He was still confused about Jake, and decided to put the matter to rest.
"Alright. What'r ye bein' so shy an' quiet fer? We already met, sorta, what'r ye actin' like I'm yer damn drill sergeant or sumthin'? No one's judgin' ye, lad. Calm down."

Hello there, cat
"Loki," Jake repeated, mesmerized by the kitty. He didn't know if it was the cutest kitten in the WORLD or not, but it DEFINITELY looked like ONE of them. When Dan picked the kitten up that was enough to make Jake inch closer once more really wishing he could pet him but too shy to ask.
Jake grinned as the kitten skirted between Dan's feet, but paused when Dan addressed him again.
"S-sorry," Jake mumbled, lowering his head again (and flinching at the bad word that Dan had uttered). "I-I'm um...I...I'm not v-very good at talking to people...." he admitted. He fidgeted from foot to foot uncomfortably trying to think of the right words to say but feeling the familiar nervousness that came whenever a stranger's eyes rested upon him - even one that he knew was nice like Dan was. He didn't know if that feeling would ever go away. He always expected a mean word or worse, and surely it would only be worse when Jake couldn't even string two sentences together without stuttering.
"I...I don't think I'm very good at being calm either..." Jake said quietly. Shamefully, he stared down at the floor. Then, because Loki was near the floor, he rested his eyes upon Loki and watched him play, knowing he was doing this all wrong but not knowing how to make it better.

Hello there, cat
Oooh, so that was what was going on. This kid, Jake, was the timid quiet kind of kid. Dan didn't hate kids like this, but gods they were so hard to make friends with. Even harder, sometimes, was interacting with them after you made friends with them. And Jake here looked like the worst of the lot. Absolutely zero people skills, and even if its something as simple as talking to a single person with an adorable kitten baby, he seemed like he would rather curl into a ball and sob at the idea of of doing any social interaction.
Loki stood behind Dan's feet and mewed at Jake, staring at him intently. It would seem that Loki was as put off by other people as Jake was. Oh well. He was fine with Dan at least. But then, that was what the old people at the pet store has said he would be like. Egyptian Maus were only at ease with their owners.
Dan sighed. This conversation was going nowhere.
"Well, I don't know what to tell ye. If ye can't talk to other people if yer not calm, and ye can't figure out how to be calm, I don't know what to tell ye to do."
