Pyce took a shaky breath, holding it for a few seconds before coughing it back out. Hecate squeezed his their hand.
Their mother, Donna, was cleaning the kitchen, charming brooms to sweep and sponges to scrub. It was a familiar sight. And Pyce was terrified.
"M-mum?" Pyce stuttered out. Donna turned her attention away from a particularly cobweb-ridden window.
"Yes Helios?" Pyce's whole body was shaking. Any words they had to say were lost, their brain seemingly ceasing to function. Donna looked at her sons in concern. "Helios-"
"You know Mori?" Hecate jumped in. Hecate was a good brother, Pyce thought, squeezing his hand. Hecate squeezed back. Donna narrowed her eyes in suspicion.
"Yes. I know Mori." She said slowly.
"You know how-" Pyce tugged on Hecate's hand, silencing him. "What?"
"I wanna say it" Pyce whispered. Hecate stared for a moment, then nodded.
"You know how Mori isn't a boy or a girl?" There was a beat of silence and Pyce was terrified of what their mother would say.
"Yes." She said carefully.
"I don't- I- I-" Pyce sucked in a breath, tears pricking at the corner of their eyes. Donna and Hecate let them collect themself. "I don't think I'm a boy or a girl either." Their voice got quieter and quieter as the sentence progressed. Time stood still as Pyce waited for a response.
"Okay," Donna said gently.
"Okay?"
"Okay." She nodded. "Anything else? This is very important and I don't want to assume anything."
"I- My name is Pyce now." The child said so softly. Donna hummed. "Okay?"
"Okay." Donna said again. "Matching twin names are quite cliche, aren't they?" Pyce nodded shakily. "What now?"
"If you could th-they/them pronouns for me? And my new name?"
"Of course."
"And- and you can still use boy words for me. I- I like being Hecate's brother or your son or- or- or" Pyce choked on their words, tears freely flowing down their face.
"Oh, Pyce," Donna said, kneeling down and opening her arms. Pyce rushed into her embrace, still crying. "It's alright. You're okay."
Hecate, since freed from his brother's grasp, draped himself over Pyce's back.
"Do you want to tell me why you're so nervous?"
"M-mori said not everyone was nice to them when they told people. I didn't- I-"
"You didn't know how I'd react?" Pyce nodded. Donna kissed their forehead. "Well, I still love you very much, no matter what." Donna ran her fingers through their hair. "Do you want to get ice cream and go to the library?" Pyce nodded. They could feel Hecate rapidly nodding his own head in response. "Okay. Let's get ready, and we'll go." Hecate removed himself from Pyce's back. The nervous wreck spent a few more moments in the hug before they backed out, wiping the tears from their eyes. Donna stood up and straightened her robes.
"C'mon Pie!" Hecate said, a bit loud for Pyce's taste. "We've got ice cream to claim!" Pyce let their brother drag them away.
