Afternoon Slot

The longer Astrea observed, the more apparent the differences between her own experiences and those of her current participants became. Far from the deliberate exploitation of firepower that many veteran trios engaged in, it seemed as if each duellist had singled out an individual target to menace. With six independent duellists casting and conjuring in each other's near vicinity, dedicated 1v1s quickly emerged. While Astrea could not tell if such division of responsibility came naturally to each team or implied a greater level of strategic or moral discipline, the 'bite and hold' tactic certainly made it easier to screen each evolving moment for foul play.

As the last poses and circling steps of Emily's dancing died away, so burned a need for retaliation. For the Hufflepuff, this was to be taken quite literally. A jet of fire struck out towards Maisie and, unlike previous attempts at the well-worn fire-making spell, such quick footwork had apparently kindled new sparks. The bottom of Maisie's robes smoked first in warning before catching flame, burning slowly but surely with frightfully present verocity. Avis, accompanied by a lit beacon and the impromptu once-entertainer as its lighter, was quick to revive the piste's musical coersion. Her Tarantallegra struck true, and back to dancing Emily went, caught in a repetition of the same invisible song she had just finished.

Yolanda, so close yet so far from clear vision, was still blinking away the effects of Verdimillious when she gamely targeted Emily with her own Incendio. As admirably aimed as it was, however, it did not meet its intended mark. For the briefest moment, between one blink and another, her vision had almost cleared completely. Yet Costanza could not let this pass— As far as Hufflepuff was concerned, Ravenclaw clearly could not be in fighting form. Another spray of stinging green sparks forced the piste into a blurry mess once more.

Similarly to Yolanda's predicament, it seemed that Minnie's accuracy had gone terribly awry. What was meant to target Avis swung completely wide, shooting out to inadvertently target her own teammate. Costanza had very little trouble dodging the unintentional fratricide, though she perhaps should have stepped away in the opposite direction. Safe though she was from tickle-induced laughter, a surprise cast of Mucus ad Nauseam would strike her squarely. She'd be suddenly afflicted by a violent head cold of Maisie's doing. Her previous bouts of sneezing could not compare to the looming threat of worsening sickness now in her near future. If the back of her throat had not been sore from constant irritation, it would now be affected by the horrors of postnasal drip.

Now with two-thirds of the piste affected by some spell or another, the third exchange of spells seemed to be a mixed bag, as duelling often devolved into. Between the two houses, an equal ratio of success existed, yet the nature of competition necessitated only one true victory. Whichever trio sought to seize that glory first, they'd have to make do with their current situation.

There was a light by her shoes. At first, she thought it might just be a trick of the ambient light in the room—a reflection on the buckle from somewhere up in the stands. But as she looked down after seeing her spell connect—another bout of sickness for Costanza—that her eyes widened. It was clear: the bright, deep, warm glow of a violet fire at the edges of her robes. Gingerly, she'd try to stamp it out, but she knew that was no cure. The only solution was getting off this block one way or another.

Emily was almost out of breath by the time her little jig on the piste finally ended.

"Alright... The jig is up, as one would say...!"

She fired back at Maisie with a successful fire cast, the ends of the birdie's robes smoking before they finally lit with flames. She noticed one of her opponents following the same strategy, aptly dodging before Emily would meet the same fate as Maisie. Ha! That's what happens when you poke the Huffie enough times!

Not that, that seemed to bother the rest of the birdies. Before Emily knew it, she was dancing again. "Wha-- Just-- Come on!"

Afternoon Slot

It seemed that Hufflepuff had identified a relatively weak spot in Ravenclaw's defences. What had once been calculated attempts at equal division of damage had, within moments of each other, abruptly turned into an all-out assault. Avis would find herself the attempted target of three separate spells. In a threatening show of collective strategy, the first year was staring down all possible enemy wands at once. Though she worked hard to send Emily flying with a tried-and-true Flipendo, the Hufflepuff was quick to step away amidst the fading moves of Tarantallegra. She shot back with an intent to greater incapacitate than previously attempted, gifting Avis not a shower of green sparks but a conjured blindfold to obscure the piste. Just as Costanza's Knockback jinx punched through the scramble of spellwork, in what certainly was a planned combination of clever coordination, a black veil would tie itself neatly around Avis' eyes like salt on the wound. The second-year seer seemed slightly more sickened by the building curse of the bogies, but it evidently was enough to handle for now. Ravenclaw was not finished there. Indeed, Minnie was not one to let her teammates have all the fun. As the third member of a triple threat, she went to cast another jet of brilliant green Incendio Duo. Unfortunately, likely due to the terrifying split-second knowledge of triple targetting, Avis's instincts were far too honed to risk scalding. The spell was cleanly, masterfully dodged.

Maisie, likely anticipating greater heat from their suddenly focused opponents, spent her time quick on her feet. Any incoming spell would have great difficulty striking such a deftly focused duellist. Unfortunately for her, it seemed that such evasive manoeuvres were wasted on the newly initiated 3v1 combat that the piste had engaged itself in. No spells came her way. Neither did they target Yolanda, who was living life in a perpetual haze. In a manner that would make any senior duellist proud, and perhaps slightly concerned considering underclassmen's lack of healing spells, it seemed that the first year had chosen to push past temporary inconveniences like lacking vision. Dividing and conquering apparently required the contagious spread of the common cold, for her Mucus ad Nauseam struck out to target yet another member of team Hufflepuff. Unfortunately, her accuracy was deeply affected by her gradually sharpening vision, and it wasn't until her eyes stopped stinging that her dodged spell was obvious.

Though one duellist stood blindfolded, another still fed upon by a hungry flame and yet another suffering from a worsening head cold, the other three participants found themselves blissfully unaffected by any magical ailments. There was no telling how long this would last. Hufflepuff's hard right turn towards trapdoor offence had been more than successful and, with Astrea watching approvingly from her moderator section, signalled a sophisticated sort of ruthless strategy that was well at home with higher-level duels. Ravenclaw found itself slightly off-kilter to the adjustment, but their impressive dedication to self-preservation amidst all odds hopefully allowed plentiful room for adaptation. The overall balance of the duel was shifting, rapidly so, and it was only a matter of time before the piste would once more become complicated by lingering spellwork.

"Ugh-- Just--!"

After getting hit twice with the accursed dancing feet spell, Emily was slowly getting used to the unpredictability of where her legs would jingle and jangle next before her body jerked to follow them. With her wand still in her hand, she pointed a slightly shaky but a "Meh, good enough" angle to Avis.

With quick and careful-enough casting, a blindfold covered Avis's eyes, much to Emily's surprise. With all the dancing, she was certain she would've missed. At the same time, the effects of the spell proved handy to evade a Flipendo that was coming her way.

For a comeback match, this wasn't what Emily had in mind. But it was working! And she was happy to take that over last match's outcome. If this kept up, Hufflepuff might actually pull this off.
