The last time Eris had been so close to the Groundskeeper's cabin, she had been running away from her own handiwork. Running a hand through her hair, feeling almost guilty for it's long length, Eris stared intently at the grass near the faint image of the cabin, almost looking to see if the grass was still charred and covered in blood. There was no imprint in the grass, as two years had passed from that fateful night, where the past and the present had intermingled in a violent display of rage so catastrophic that Ami still wore the effects of that night on her body, like a primitive prize. Eris had seen her in the hallways a few times, with her shorn hair and burn marks. If she had been a different person, Eris might have shown her own burn marks. Might have stated she knew what it felt like to have those pesky scars. But, it was Ami. So, Eris just walked past her, glad for her small stature, which made it easier to slip past the American girl.

It felt strange that it had been two years. Eris wondered if she had been a different person then when she had set Ami's hair on fire and then consequently broke her kneecap. Truthfully, with all the imposing rules of pureblood society set upon her shoulders, Eris knew she was different. But, she didn't feel all that different. There was a hollowness in her chest, though. An empty place where Dorian's laughter or delightfully amusing evil plans would have once been. Two years was an awfully long time to go without a friend. Part of Eris thought he was dead, murdered by the masked man who had possessed Ben. She mourned Dorian more than she pondered her own emotions or how she might be different from that night.

Eris knew what she had done was wrong. Although, she would never really admit it out loud. Two years was a long time. A year without Max and Dorian had taught Eris what it felt like to be alone and ostracised, just as the three friends had made people feel alone and ostracised. It felt like some of her anger and some of the fire inside her soul belonged to them, and had been snuffed out when they were vanquished from her life. But, even without their presence, Eris had never bothered to speak to Ami. Never bothered to apologise for her actions, even though they were actions that had been created simply because Eris had been unable to handle her own emotions. It had been a hard year, finding out about her mother being the wizarding equivalent of Dexter, finding out about being a pureblood, and the like. Eris wanted normality more than anything, and when wishing for it had done nothing, had lost herself in the anger and the rage that were so much easier to focus on then the sadness and the grief that threatened to blow over her whole being in a wave of grief.

Seeing someone from her past hadn't been the issue. The fact that Ami had lied about her name hadn't been the issue. The issue had been that she promised to come back. That she could have been there for Eris, that the two of them could have gone to Hogwarts together. Eris could have had a friend, throughout all the drama and rumours. Someone to go to when Adam had stopped being her friend for those long weeks. It was the what-ifs that plagued Eris, that had enraged her. That had lead to her smashing Ami's kneecap.

She hated being alone, and finding out that she could have been close to being included from the start was what hurt Eris. Sighing, Eris turned her face away from the cabin. The memories of that night danced around in her head like a waltz, begging for recognition, asking Eris to recall her own foolishness. But, Eris would not let those thoughts fill her brain. What was done was done. Eris had no idea if Ami even went to the school, or if speaking again could ever be done. Eris had spent most of last year hiding from everyone in the Castle, refusing to admit her own depression and sadness had turned her into a wraith of a person.

Now that there was hope in the world, Eris didn't know what to do. When the dull cloud of depression dimmed out everything but a very distant speck of fire, it was hard to feel guilt. But, Max was back at school. His return into Eris' life felt like the closing of a door and the opening of another one. It felt like a reprieve from the struggles of the Summer, of the horrors of her second year at school. A new leaf, a way to start over. The two of them had both changed, hopefully for the better. So, maybe Eris could admit to her own faults. If she was able to admit the faults in her grandfather, maybe she would be able to admit the faults in herself.

That would have to start with Ami. Eris felt no guilt about what happened to Eri. Eri deserved what had come to her. And, so would anyone else who dared to attack any of Eris' friends. There was, in Eris' mind, nothing wrong with defending those she cared for. But, she had once cared for Ami. So, it made sense to at least try to defend her. But, the only thing to really defend Ami from would be Eris herself.

It was that train of thought that had brought Eris out to the spot where it all went down. It was that strange guilt and strange questioning that made Eris sit close to that spot in the grass, wondering if Ami ever did the same. Did the other girl ever think about that night and find herself staring at that spot of grass? Eris didn't know. There was a lot about Ami that Eris didn't know anymore, and maybe that much alone was worth speaking to the other girl about. But, Eris had no idea where to find Ami.

It had been two long, long years since Ami had been down by the Groundskeeper’s cabin. A lot had happened since then- she had a new baby brother, her hair had grown out a little bit, her burns had scarred over, she managed not to fail Transfiguration, she had toured America with Scott, she had become infatuated with Alexx… she had changed. She had grown. She was no longer the overdramatic crybaby she had once been as a First Year; she was no longer the ruthless asshole who had ruined someone’s life over a silly notebook. She knew that she had made mistakes, and had made up her mind during her second year to track down Dorian and Eris, especially Eris, so she could make amends… but she never got the chance. Ami had been caught up in a whirlwind of adventures, homework, and gossip, and it was all she could do to survive in her busy school life. All thoughts of correcting her mistakes flew from her mind, and it was only over the summer that she had realized that she really needed to change.

Eris was supposed to have been her first friend, but to be honest, she couldn’t remember exactly why she had never returned to the park after that fateful evening with those muggers. What if she had gone back? Would she still be friends with Scott? Would she have eventually learned Eris’ real name? As Ami tugged at the ends of her hair, squinting up at the sun as she stepped outside, her heart throbbed with guilt as she realized that she could have stopped so many things from happening if she had just gone back to the park sometime that summer.

But she hadn’t, and that was the problem, wasn’t it? Fishing a piece of gum out of her bookbag, chewing the sickeningly sweet pink bubblegum thoughtfully as she stumbled down the hill towards the Groundskeeper’s Cabin, Ami sighed as she realized just how often she had thought about her redhead frenemy throughout the last year or so. It was both too much and not enough, she decided, all things considered. Eris wasn’t a part of her life anymore, but yet, she very much was. Eris Fawley was the weight on her conscience, the problem that Ami had yet to solve.

Popping her gum loudly as her feet dragged her down towards the cabin, Ami glanced at Leo trotting faithfully behind her, the gray scoundrel distracted every few seconds or so by a passing insect or the sun lighting up the grass. Shaking her head and laughing carelessly, she scooped Leo up in her arms, ignoring his mewling protests as she approached the Groundskeeper’s Cabin. She needed closure, and maybe if she just stopped by one last time… maybe she’d find it.

Obviously, the last person she expected to see was Eris herself.

Freezing, nearly dropping Leo in her shock, she stared open-mouthed at the Gryffindor redhead, wondering if she was seeing things. Her jaw opened and closed as she struggled for words, an occurrence that seemed to be happening more and more often. Finally, Ami crouched down, setting Leo down on the ground carefully before standing back up, still staring at Eris. “I’m so, so sorry,” she blurted out before she had a chance to think about what she was saying. “I should’ve come back.”

The sound of someone loudly popping gum echoed throughout Eris’s ears, and the smell of bubblegum wafted through the air. Sickenly sweet and ardently distracting from Eris’s own thoughts, it was just what she needed at the moment. Soft, delightful distractions. The true gift for a distracted and impatient mind. Without distractions, Eris would have spent far more time regretting the events of first year. There was, as she was understanding, a difference from beating someone up and burning them. The guilt of hurting someone for life was stronger than any guilt Eris felt over hurting someone briefly. She would not and could not feel remorse for hurting the Ravenclaw girl, not after what Eri had done to ruin Eris’s relationships with Kaegen and Adam.

Thinking about Eri was futile. Not when the cloying scent of bubblegum was enough to squander any thoughts that did not correlate with hunger and eagerness to chew on gum. Reid Kovacs had introduced Eris to gum in her first year. Thus, there would always be a special fondness for gum where Eris was considered. It was impossible not to like something that tasted so good, and also reminded Eris of her hufflepuff friend.

She inhaled the smell, not bothering to turn her head towards whoever was chewing the gum. No evil person would be chewing gum loud enough to alert anyone to their presence. Besides, who would dare to attack Eris in broad daylight? Considering that the smell was growing stronger, it was apparent whoever was chewing the gum was coming closer to Eris. Wanting nothing more than to smack on a piece of gum herself, Eris began to speak, “Do you have an extra piece of g-”

It seemed as if thinking about hufflepuffs with gum had summoned one to the scene. Eris was cut off by an American accent. A familiar American accent. Her eyes widened, hand reaching for something. A white flag, her wand, something? She wouldn’t ever know. Eris’s hand halted in midair, as Ami stated the words Eris had never thought she’d hear out loud. An apology for everything. It was baffling, it was amazing, it felt good. It felt like something that Eris had been missing throughout the long years since the two had convened in the park at midnight.

As a small smile touched at the corners of her lips, it fell away when Eris finally looked up at Ami. Her first friend looked different. Her height, for one. She had a cat, as well. That was new. Everything felt different. The change was what reminded Eris of what she had done. Just because Ami had apologized didn’t clear the air completely. Rather, it reminded Eris of how she had permanently damaged Ami. Not hurt, but burnt. The difference, as Eris had thought about before, was extremely important.

“But I burnt you?” Eris responded to Ami’s apology. “I should be saying sorry.” She wouldn’t have felt sorry if Dorian was back. But the memory of whatever Ami had done to offend him was fading away, just as all of her fond memories of Dorian were also fading away. It was hard to remain loyal to someone who was nothing more than a spectre of memory. The familiar pang of sadness echoed in Eris’s chest, as she thought about Dorian’s absence. But, she found no rage when looking at Ami, none of the familiar fire tugging at her heartstrings and reminding Eris that this girl was a traitor.

Whatever Ami had done to Dorian was long ago. She remembered Dorian in the hospital wing after an encounter with Ami. Remembered laughing at the chocolate on his face, crying about their parents together, and devising evil plots together. It felt so impossible to recall Ami in that story. The only important factor was remembering Dorian, remembering his smile, his emotions, or anything about him in general. Now that he was gone, wasting time thinking about Ami was a foolish idea.

And Eris understood why Ami hadn’t come back for her. Nobody really came back for Eris, anymore. Maybe it was something about her. Perhaps she wasn’t tall enough or pretty enough to warrant a second visit. Nobody had come to visit Eris whilst she lay burning in the Hospital Wing. Not returning wasn’t a fault with Ami, exclusively. It was commonplace with all of those Eris met. The fault, most likely, lay with her. Eris owed Ami an apology. As much as she wanted to give one to Ami, Eris found the words stuck in her mouth.

It was just three words, spoken aloud. How difficult could an apology be? Running a hand through smoothed tresses of red hair, finding shock in how smooth her hair was, Eris found her hands making the familiar pathway to tuck a strand of red hair behind her ear. Nervous habits died hard, even if Eris’s hair had changed in the time that she had been away from Ami. Once wild and unruly, Eris now kept her hair long and straight. Looking down at the ground, Eris’s hand fell away from her ear to rip up a clump of grass.

Focusing on the grass, not the face of the Hufflepuff, Eris took a deep breath and shut her eyes. “I’m sorry, too.” She admitted. Not for the kneecap that she had smashed. Ami’s kneecap had healed over. But, for the burning. Even as she thought about what had been done to Ami, violent flashes of orange and yellow danced across the backs of Eris’s closed eyes. Brown eyes opening quickly, the grass in her hand falling to the ground, Eris’s breath caught in her throat.

It was just fire. Fire couldn’t hurt her, not again. Eris was being foolish to be scared of a memory. Finally meeting Ami’s gaze, trying to show that she wasn’t scared and that the weird movements had just been coincidental, Eris swallowed. “I shouldn’t have burnt your hair off.” She amended, in a lacklustre tone.

Ami let out a shaky breath as Eris made no move to rip her head off, which by all means, she could've done. She realized what Eris was going to ask her, before being cut off by the forever inconvenient element of shock and surprise, and fished around in her bag for another piece for her fellow redhead. She closed the remaining distance between the two, coming to a stop in front of the Gryffindor. Even Leo seemed to realize that now was not the time to play, and hid anxiously behind the tall girl's ankles, peeking out at Eris inquisitively. Without hesitation, Ami reached her hand out, offering the stick of bubblegum to her former nemesis- a peaceoffering. A truce.

She laughed, a quiet sound, and not at all forced. Her eyes crinkled, and she tilted her head. "You know what?" Ami said quietly. "I think we both have a lot to be sorry for. Maybe we should just be sorry together, y'know?" Because that sounded like a pretty good plan to her. Forgive and forget, right? She doubted that either of them would forget, actually, if they ever actually moved on past this, but to forgive? She figured that that was a reasonable goal. She knew that she had already long since forgiven Eris for her injures... but she needed to be sure that Eris forgave her.

"Besides," Ami added with a shrug, her hand running through her shorn hair. "I think you might've done me a favor, in the end. Man, what a pain it was, taking care of my hair. I think I like it better like this. And bangs! I have to thank Scott for that one." And it was more than just her appearance that had evolved and matured over the years. Her personality, too, it had softened- she wasn't a total jerk, now. She talked, she laughed, and she had Scott to thank for all of it. What an absolute unit of a friend.

Biting the corner of her lip, Ami glanced down at Leo before glancing at Eris. "Friends?" she asked, and while she definitely wasn't begging (no, she already had Scott, and if Eris still hated her, she would turn back to her other Gryffindor friend, who would hopefully be there for her until the end), there was certainly a tone of pleading in her question. "Or maybe not friends yet," she amended, realizing that it might be a bit of a stretch. "But I-" Ami offered Eris a wry smile and a shrug. "I definitely could use a few more familiar faces around this damned castle.

"So what do you say?" Ami asked, her breathing finally calming down to something slightly less like hyperventilating, and more like mild apprehension. "I know I haven't really shown you that I can be a good friend, or really, a good person at all, but I swear-for real, this time-that I'll make it up to you. Say the word, and I will help you."

And she was for real, for real. No doubt about it, Ami genuinely wanted to friends with the feisty powerhouse that she had first met all those years ago, because if things had gone differently, maybe they would've been friends. Maybe even best friends. But they hadn't gone that way, and now, Ami just wanted things to be okay between them.

Forgive and forget. Perdona y olvida.
