Patience. It was the word that kept tumbling around Noelle's mind as she neared her class. She was heading towards History of Magic, which she had attended several times already but she had never gotten used to how exciting it actually turned out to be. It was hard not to be intrigued by the subjects covered, they were about the history of their entire world, something her mother never had been interested in covering before. She knew why very well, but she still wished had learned this before coming to Hogwarts.

Noelle entered her class and took in the room: today it would be Ravenclaws and Slytherins. She sighed a little, remembering the previous encounters she had with the serpents, but she didn't let that bother her. She knew that not all of them were that bad. She just hoped that she wouldn't be paired with anyone who distracted her form the lesson today.

She wore her robes, accented with blue and adorned with the crest of Ravenclaw on her chest. She had her dark hair pulled into two low ponytails so they wouldn't get in the way while she took notes, which she learned the hard way. Noelle carried her writing utensils and the appropriate book, along with the one for her next class, which was Defense Against the Dark Arts.

The young witch found a seat towards the back of the class, unfortunately, since most of her house had taken up the front rows. She was sitting alone for the moment and took that time to review her notes from the last time she was in the class.

Patience. Noelle knew why that word kept popping up in her brain. She remembered having sent a letter to her godmother the other day and had received a response the following morning. Apparently Noelle was very different in her writing than in person, because she had poured out all of her grief and misery in that letter, like it had been her diary. Usually she bottled everything up but Hogwarts was as stressful as it was fun to be in. Despite the Quidditch games and the friendly people she's met, Noelle slowly became weighed down with so much that she took her godmother's advice and wrote to her.

Just then she was signaled that the class would be starting soon. Noelle sighed and slouched in her chair, waiting to begin the day's lesson. She wondered if they would be covering the same subject from last time or moving on to something new. She didn't mind either option; the class was her second favorite.

September 26th, 2019.

It’s been quite a rough morning for him. Not only did he wake up late and had to have breakfast in a hurry, but he managed to get lost among the students in the hallways, arriving late to his first period, which resulted in Slytherin losing a house point, and now, not only did other students from different houses give him a dirty look but his own housemates as well!

Great, Roman thought once he left his first lesson all by himself, feeling his housemates’ eyes burning on his back. Fewer people trying to make friends with me. (Not that many even wanted to be his friends anyways). Thankfully, he hasn't had much contact with other students other than his Potions partner, which oh so happened to be the most talkative person in the entire school.

No need to say it, by the look of complete distaste on his face, but yeah, Roman Kingston isn’t exactly in his best mood at the moment today; still a bit frustrated over his silly mistake, drained by not-so willing interactions with Clementine Hamilton yesterday during Potions, and bitter by the lack of his response from his father.

After walking towards the History of Magic classroom, located on the first floor, Roman slithers inside, alongside his housemates and the Ravenclaws. He checks his bag one more time, making sure that all he needed was there. Quills, inkwell, parchment, book? Check, check, check, check.

Running his fingers through his rather messy hair, the pureblood watches as most Ravenclaws take a seat at the front, paired up with someone from their own house, which leaves the tables in the back for the Slytherin. His housemates don’t seem to mind, but he does! History of Magic is one of his favorite subjects, as it’s engaging and just so interesting, so, of course, he wanted to sit in the front.

Today really isn’t my day, uh?, Roman sulks, making his way to the back, looking around for a free table. Quite honestly, he doesn’t feel like sitting with someone from Slytherin, as they’d probably make some remarks about how he made them lose a point or whatever, which would result in him snapping. He really isn’t in the mood to deal with other people’s crap.

His eyes find a table occupied by a young brown-haired witch that, as he gets closer, making his way in that direction, Roman recognizes as Noelle, who he’d met at the Hogwarts Express, but didn't exchange a single word other than that. He's seen her around, but never felt like talking, because why would he? Not only is she from a different house, which restricted their interactions, but they didn't seem to actually like each other, so, why go out of his way, right?

"Tch," The boy lets out, and with an eye roll, he huffs, face now looking even sourer than before, he tosses his backpack to the floor next to the empty chair by Noelle’s side. Roman sits down, letting his back slide against the chair, slouchingly, crossing his arms. One of his most annoying sneers appears on his face, as he says, jokingly, in hopes of pissing her off, "How's your day treatin' ya, my dear partner?"

Just when she was getting in the mood, Noelle's eyes caught on the sight of someone a little too sour for her taste enter the classroom. She should've known; they were both first years and the class has Slytherins, too, he was bound to be attending as well.

Luckily she hadn't talked to him much, or at all, since that first ride to the castle so whatever she disliked about him was restricted to that sole day. Several days had passed since that occurrence and although she had seen him in the halls, she never felt like talking to him, or much to anyone, for that fact. Actually, Noelle had felt a little like an outcast at the school, and she still wasn't entirely sure why. Maybe she just wasn't socially adept at talking to other wizards as she had thought.

She didn't give him more than a glance, she went bent to the professor. The lesson was being written on the board. Today they were talking about the Werewolf Code of Conduct. Noelle perked up at this, just as someone in particular came to take the seat besides her.

Roman threw his backpack to the side, causing her to flinch. She sat up in her seat and twisted her head around, squinting her eyes up at him. What is his deal? She was beginning to think that this really was his everyday mood, like he was just upset with everyone. Noelle just wanted to know what she did to this irritable boy.

He had to nerve to let out a 'tch', which made her clench her teeth. She faced forward and scooted closer to the table; even if they had unfortunately became partners, that didn't mean she had to interact with him outside of instructions.

"How's your day treatin' ya, my dear partner?" he sneered. How annoying.

Noelle chose to ignore him, more out of lack of something decent to say. She wasn't riled up enough to say anything rude yet, but she didn't doubt that he would attempt test her limits this period. My day was perfect until now, she thought, to answer his question. She didn't feel like playing games.

[quote][quote]The lack of response makes him chuckle, staring right at the board, trying to read what it says without having to squint his eyes; it's impossible and he gives up, rolling his eyes. Bloody Ravenclaws, not leaving a single table for me, he thinks. Instead of paying attention, Roman glances at Noelle by the corner of his eyes; she doesn’t look very happy, which only serves to encourage him so more.

"Oh, looks like someone isn’t much of a talkah during class, uh?" Roman comments, laughing, poking fun at her, trying to see how long she’d last before telling him to shut up or something else. The boy runs his fingers through his hair, getting his quill, inkwell, and parchment from his bag because he actually cares about learning something from this class.

Honestly, he’s not usually like that to people he doesn’t know. Though, not to the point of being considered nice, let alone polite, Roman never makes fun or annoys them like that because it’s never fun, as they can simply leave and ignore him.

Mainly, he annoys his father, but that’s his own special way of asking for attention, so it doesn’t really count. It’s been a while since Thomas, his mother’s manager and his second favorite “victim” had come to visit him, so Roman’s been stuck to annoying his father for quite some time, which can be boring, considering the man never gives such a big reaction.

Not anymore, he supposes, eyes sparkling with excitement. It’s still very fun, especially with the way Noelle tries to ignore him as if the boy isn't there. But, back at the train, he’d noticed how the way he acted seemed to get a slight reaction out of the Ravenclaw next to him.

Determined, with various ideas bubbling in his head, oh so pleased with himself, Roman tries one more time, this time sliding a bit closer to her, that same annoying sneer on his face.

"Aw, why so silent Noh-ella? You’re hurtin’ me, ya know."The boy pronounces her name purposefully wrong. He puts on the fakest thinking expression, hand on his chin, humming, "Pardon me if I’m wrong, darlin’, but didn’t ya say you’re a Gryffindor, the ones so brave? Then why are ya bein’ so quiet fo’, uh?"

Noelle twisted her mouth to the side; this boy really wanted a reaction from her. Suddenly she wished she weren't herself, or wasn't herself here. She wanted to be at the front of the class, in another class, or in another school entirely. This was because she felt like Roman wanted to bring something out of her that she was not comfortable with. The young witch was used to being calm and staying collected, despite the fact that some people were really arrogant, even more so than him. But Roman was something else entirely; it was as if it were his life purpose to get her nerves, and this was only their second time meeting.

She tried to focus, she really did. It was easy at first but something just wanted to snap at him and say words she would really regret. Her jaw worked, like she was literally biting back her next words. If unleashed them, it would be really foul, but also irrational, since she had nothing really to say to him rather to shut the @#$& up and that he was Pureblood supremacists. Just like he joked about on the train ride.

But she sorted of...didn't wish that she hadn't met him.

Noelle sighed deeply and wrote something down with her quill. She dreaded the moment when they'd have to do group work, because she really wasn't in the mood for Roman Kingston.

Like many times before, and probably many times more, Roman began talking to her again in his antagonizing way. And to add onto it, he scooted closer. Noelle wanted to cringe but instead her body tensed up, making her grip her quill a little harder and clenched her teeth a little tighter...and was that warmth in her cheeks?

"Aw, why so silent Noh-ella? It's Noh-elle, dumbie, she wanted to say. You’re hurtin’ me, ya know." You're hurting my eardrums even more, she also wanted to add. But she didn't.

"Pardon me if I’m wrong, darlin’, but didn’t ya say you’re a Gryffindor, the ones so brave? Noelle stopped writing and froze, glaring at the table. She dared him to say something foul: she would— Then why are ya bein’ so quiet fo’, uh?"

Noelle sucked in her breath and began writing again, this time normally. She brushed back her bangs and calmly replied, While it's common for snakes to attack when threatened, I fail to see what ails you so to bother me like a pestering mosquito. She basically spat out that last part, wanting Roman to know exactly what she thought of him. And she felt no regrets...I think.

To go against that weird thought, Noelle added, Can you please move back? Thanks.”

[quote][quote]“Snake facts, eh? Adorable, really,” With an impressed eyebrow raise, Roman says, going back to his place, but eyes still very much on her, confused about the slight blush that appeared on the girl’s cheeks. She’s a different one, isn’t she? He asks before wiping the thought away from his mind, continuing his mean streak. “Do Ravenclaw throw random facts at ya once ya get into the common room so ya all can pretend to be smarter than everyone else, is that it?”

There’s dripping bitterness coming out of his words relating to the eagle house, but they’re not directed towards Noelle, at all. If anything, Roman’s still a bit pissed at himself for he broke a family tradition by being sorted into Slytherin. Not only that, but it’s sort of offensive, at least for him. Being a musician, he’s supposed to have creative written all over him, and yet, that stupid Sorting Hat thought Slytherin was a better fit for him.

Lowering his eyes towards her parchment, he’s thankful that he’s able to read what she’s writing down, so he can at least have some idea of what they’re studying in today’s lesson: The Werewolf Code of Conduct. Surprisingly, he doesn’t know much about it, as his father never let him look deeper into other creatures’ past, in order to study and understand them better, for example, vampires or, in this case, werewolves. All he knew, due to a few of Virgil Kingston’s comments here and there, is that they’re dangerous to society and should be kept an eye on.

Well, he’ll give a look into that later, once he goes back to the dungeons and annoys his dormmates into leaving so he can have that big dorm room all for himself, Roman thinks, making a note inside of his brain so he won’t forget. There’s quite the chatter around them, and though he can’t fully understand what the Professor is saying, he’s able to catch some words here and there and make the context for himself.

Repeating the words in his head, he slowly writes down on his parchment what he manages to figure out about the Werewolf Code of Conduct, trying to have the perfect handwriting so he’ll be able to understand it later. Once he’s done, Roman crosses his arm again, letting his quill roll on the table, then goes on to add, ignoring Noelle asking for him to move since he already did that, “And threatened? the word ya’re lookin’ fo’ is bored, pumpkin,”

He called her remark adorable. She wanted to feel angry but her eyebrows just scrunched up in confusion. What was...adorable about anything she had just said? It wasn't meant to flatter him—actually, the direct opposite had been intended but maybe he was used to such statements. Whatever, Noelle was just glad that she hadn't fed into him as much as he'd probably like, so her face melted back into it's normal nonchalance.

Do Ravenclaw throw random facts at ya once ya get into the common room so ya all can pretend to be smarter than everyone else, is that it?

No, she replied in a heartbeat. If Noelle had explained it to him, he would've came to realize that most of the Ravenclaws, as she could see, were just chill people who found learning more as an easy sport rather than a chore, especially when it came to topics that were a little daunting. It was just easier to understand or take interest in things because the eagles' knew how to handle incoming knowledge, or most of them. Others were bent on very creative yet peculiar tasks, which was another aspect of Ravenclaw that she liked.

She could sense the bitterness in his tone. That made Noelle wonder if actually liked being in Slytherin. She didn't know much about the house and despite the not-so-nice things she had heard about it, she had thought that the Slytherins were not that bad folk. Actually, for fun, she had written down things about each house and compared them to each other, trying to find what was to like and dislike about all of them. What she found was rather interesting, especially for the house of snakes. Noelle considered sharing this with Roman but she didn't in case his feelings were directed at her, which she highly assumed.

Noelle kept writing, hoping that it was it of this bickering. They were on the subject of werewolves, which she had always been sketchy about. At first it was mostly out of curiosity, because muggle culture had fantasized them as mostly kindred beings only violent went bothered; they were deemed dreamy and husky but after doing her research, Noelle had found them exactly not that. These lycanthropes, once triggered by a full moon, became relentless, bloodthirsty creatures that embodied the word terrifying, and she never wanted to meet one, unless her life depended on it.

And threatened? The word ya’re lookin’ fo’ is bored, pumpkin, added Roman, like he never tired of talking to her. Noelle honestly wanted to know what was the big deal with him towards her. If he was bored he should just go talk to his housemates, because she wasn't even that much of a conversationalist.

But the fact that he had added pumpkin...now that felt oddly patronizing. It's Noelle...what is boring, exactly? She half didn't want to know, but she had studied enough on Werewolf Code of Conduct that she could afford to get distracted for a moment, not like he wasn't already distracting her.

[quote][quote]The fact that she bothered to correct him, visibly annoyed, makes that small smirk magically come back to his face. Roman looks around the classroom, relatively pleased with himself, watching some of his housemates talked to each other, snickering with a mean spark to their eyes. He’s seen them around, those two are the ones always causing trouble in the common room.

Even though the Slytherin common room is often alive until late and he’s been having a lot of trouble sleeping, Roman’s never once talked to any of his housemates. Ok, sure, maybe some words here and there at the Slytherin, maybe he’d laugh at some of their jokes, but, all in all, nothing continuous. Nothing. All of them were more like blurry faces than anything.

And then he remembers that he still hasn’t answered her. “I have no clue,” Roman says, sounding a little too honest, but the words continue to come out. He shrugs, in order to keep his aloof image, peering at her in look for a reaction, not wanting to see pity or anything like that in her eyes. “Everything, maybe.”

Come to think of it, other than his two house-elves, he never had friends, someone to talk to. Before, he used to consider himself better off without them, but now, looking at how everyone else seemed to have one, the boy couldn’t help but feel lone– What?! He frowns, looking down to the floor, wondering what’s gotten into him?!

“Guess not talkin’ to anyone sorta does this to ya after a while,” he adds in a huff, before letting out a condescending laugh at himself, wondering since when he's gotten so— emotional.
