Cyrus paled when Raizel mentioned Hogsmeade. Too soon — it was too soon. The sounds of the village returned in a vengeance alongside the stench of flesh permeating the woods, and he absently rubbed at his nose in hopes that the smell of his soap would overpower the fumes of his memories.

'But they'll still happen, and you're right. You won't be ready, no matter how hard you train. No matter how much you push yourself, and if you break yourself, you're not going to be able to do anything.' His words were gentle despite their content, but also not with much emotion behind them. He was just stating facts, really. 'And there will always be something we're not ready for. It's just part of being human. Doesn't mean we have to like it.'

All that rambling to say... 'So it's not your fault. And your pace isn't too slow. The world moves faster than any one of us can. So we just have to exist and do good and hope that good is good enough.'

He didn't even know if he could say anything helpful. He was just a silly, happy-go-lucky guy who liked ducks. His worldview had saved him from falling down the same hole of 'not good enough', he knew that much. But he didn't know how to help someone dealing with the same sort of thing, except to try to gently lift them out of the hole they had gotten stuck into. And that was assuming he wasn't reading too much into it!

Cyrus's blue eyes widened when Raizel said he didn't seem odd. That sentiment towards him was a rarity. Usually, people thought he was odd, perhaps endearingly, but he was always 'quirky' or 'eccentric'. Too much. Cyrus's smile widened, too. 'Thanks.'

He nodded when Raizel noted she did not practise martial arts, but when she asked if he could show her some moves, he momentarily baulked. He kept his mouth shut, though, until she finished explaining. More options, more means for action... 'Well, if you promise to take it easy. And we will be stretching first. I don't want you getting hurt.' He gazed at her with slight concern etched into his features. 'But sure, I can show you some of what I remember. Although it's been a while. First, though...' He adjusted his body into a stance — feet about shoulder width and a half apart length-wise, shoulder width apart width-wise, both knees bent slightly. '...make a stance like this. And make a fist — fingers first, then thumbs, otherwise you'll break your thumbs, which is not fun.' He held up his hand to demonstrate, curling his fingers in first, which made him look like he was giving a sideways thumbs-up, before he folded his thumb over his curled-up fingers. 'And then hold your hands up to protect your face. Like this.' He put his hands up at about the height of his cheekbones, knuckles resting slightly below his eyes, one hand just a bit in front of the other. His elbows were tucked in so that they did not jut out and so that they also made his torso less of a potential target.

'We'll start small with a few punches and stretch kicks.' He demonstrated how to throw a jab and a cross punch from his guard — his front hand shot out directly in front of him for the jab, and his back hand went next, his posture shifting slightly so that he hit the same air target. Then, he showed a stretch kick: he kept his leg straight and brought his foot up and down, feeling the stretch in his hamstring and letting out a sharp exhale. 'Golly goose, I forgot how weird that feels when you haven't done it in a while. Try it on your own, and we'll go from there.'

Cyrus’ words were like sharp arrows being fired at her at a quick pace, piercing every part of her body and hitting her with the cold hard truth. That's right, no matter what she does, she won't be ready for what's to come. Pushing herself won't do her any good. Deep inside, she knows that but she couldn't accept it for that's the only method that she could follow. There was nothing else for her to take other than that. While those pieces of wisdom are slowly sinking in, a part of her just refuses to acknowledge it, resulting in this weird sense of frustration that she keeps within. It won't be fair for Cyrus if she gets angry at him, he is only trying to help and his points are all valid. The problem is that Raizel is just too stubborn to acknowledge them at the moment because if she does… what else will she be left with? If she can't work harder, push herself over her limit, what else can she do to reach her goals? She'll be more lost than she already is.

“I’ll try.” She said to him with a sheepish chuckle. She couldn't promise that fully, knowing she might break it in the end. Slowing down even further would make it a lot harder to catch up. As Cyrus said, the world is moving faster than they all are. Existing and do good and hope that good is good enough… that's the kind of mindset that she needed but it's hard for her to do so after being wired to do better. With that said, she will try to get over it. Maybe then she'll find peace, stop this reckless streak of hers before she gets hurt even further. If not… then there's no one to blame but herself.

“Stretching, yeah.” She didn't mind that. Warming up is like a must for it. The way she had observed Cyrus while he was forming could be said to be intense with how focused she is with it. She had always been a strange observer and maybe a bit scary. Her eyes are always on the subject of interest to the point that there are times she even forgets the rest of her surroundings. “You're doing great though.” Raizel remarked before standing up straight this time, trying to imitate what the boy had shown her. Curling her hands into fists, holding them up like what he had shown. Punches are a lot easier although hers certainly lack strength and weren't as refined as the boy’s when she tried it out. To be fair, she's not as physically strong as him and there were only a few times that she had tried punching someone for most of the time, she always retorted to spells in which she couldn't trust anymore despite the talent that people believe she had with them.

Then there's her poor attempt in trying out the kick that cost her her balance. Luckily, she caught herself. “Okay, that was pathetic.” She admitted with a lighthearted tone this time. “That was cool though, the way you showed them. It's like you're a master of Martial Arts.” The girl said to Cyrus as she looked at him with genuine admiration. The last time she felt like this was when Dealla Prince showed her some spells and during a mock broom race where Xailah Alptraum showed her broom racing prowess. This is probably the first time ever she had looked cheerful ever since the two of them started talking too, a side of hers that she had forgotten after her countless failures, misfortunes and self pressure.

Cyrus could only hope he was getting through to her. He hardly knew this girl, actually, but he was him and there was nothing he put more effort into than helping others. He, too, would take his turn at 'staring' after he gave his little sentence about being human and having limits. His sky-blue gaze would do its best to bore into the inner workings of Raizel's mind — to no avail, of course. All he could do was hope.

It was his turn to give a sheepish chuckle when Raizel said he was doing well. All he knew was that this time, this day, the wind in his hair felt simply innocuous and the adrenaline in his veins was not due to something bad. He cracked a half-smile and did a few arm circles, joyfully feeling the stretch in his upper arms and back before he shook his limbs back to normalcy. 'Thanks! That wasn't very great, though. Just a warm-up!' He laughed warmly.

He was aware of the way she had been eyeing him, but he had not paid it too much mind. She had already apologised for staring; after all, and he had said it was okay and that she had nothing to apologise for! So anything more was already forgiven, even though it didn't need to be forgiven, as it was human to observe one's surroundings and learn from what one experienced.

Cyrus watched as Raizel attempted the moves, and he started forward when she began to lose her balance. He immediately had an answer, or rather a suggestion, but first, he needed to... 'Are you okay!?' His voice was slightly higher than usual, strained in tone, but his expression would only betray concern and kindness. 'It might help if, when you do the kick, you bend your base knee a little and let your foot pivot so that your toes are at a 90 degree angle from your target.' He demonstrated, and the kick was not his best. 'And, thank you, but I'm definitely no master. Although I'm still honoured to teach you anything, and I'm going to do my best.' His smile faded for a moment as he thought, but it returned when he added, 'And your punches were good. Strength is not too difficult to build; push-ups and weight lifting can help with that. But it's the proper trajectory that ensures you actually hit your target, and I think you've got a decent hold on that.'

He paused for a moment, unsure of what to try next. Finally, he decided on another kick. 'The 90-degree pivot thing? That holds for any kick going forward. Your base foot should pivot, and you shouldn't lock your base knee, but also don't bend it too much.' Upon ascertaining that Raizel was okay, most of the concern had faded from his expression, and he was back to his easygoing self. 'So you could also do a front kick with that. Bend your knee first and lift it close to your chest so that your kick gets high enough, like chest level, and then extend your leg while your knee's up there. The kick should push outwards — you're trying to push someone away from you with this kick, although it'll still do damage if you hit hard enough.'

He didn't have anything with him to hold out as a target, so instead, he moved so that he was standing in front of her, facing her. He had to be something like a foot taller, so he vaguely motioned at his stomach. 'Don't actually kick me, please, but your general target area would probably be around my stomach area if you were fighting against me. Maybe you could try to target the kick while keeping your balance? Remember to pivot your foot, and keeping your hands up in front of you could help as well.'

Raizel had always been easily impressed by what others could do. A simple thing such as Cyrus just doing a couple of warm up moves was already fascinating for the Gryffindor, enough to bring back the same gleam in those eyes of hers from when she was just a first year, one that seems to be filled with curiosity and fascination. It was rare for her to feel this way, especially when all she had experienced lately were nothing but dread. “I still think it was cool.” She insisted with a soft smile before continuing to follow the instruction of this brilliant upperclassman from another school. “And yeah, I’m okay. Just not used to it. I have never tried this before.”

It had never come into her mind, martial arts that is. For all she knows, the only way to defend yourself was through magic, thus, she never found interest in anything that doesn’t involve it. There was a point in her life when she enjoyed learning about muggle things though, back when her maternal grandparents were alive and she did learn quite a few from them but ever since coming into Hogwarts, her exposure to the muggle world had dwindled, much more when her obsession with spells started. “Truth be told, I may have found myself in situations where you just have to… punch someone.” She admitted with a shy grin, scratching the back of her head. Punching and headbutting, those were her moves back then. Now that Cyrus mentioned it, maybe she can do a bit of arms work, get some muscles. If magic wasn’t doing her any good, it was time to gain some muscle and start punching and kicking instead. She won’t need her wand anymore. She’ll just rely on pure strength but that is if she builds her body for it.

“Alright, let me try again.” Cyrus was a good instructor. She could follow what he was saying albeit confusing at first for she doesn’t understand the terms. Concern filled her eyes when Cyrus said her target was his stomach, afraid that she might hurt him accidentally. ‘Try not to kick him, try not to kick him, try not to kick him…’ she kept repeating the same thing in her mind as she repositioned herself, a nervous grin forming on her face. Knees bend… and then the kick. Unfortunately for her and Cyrus, she miscalculated the distance between the two of them and when she extended that leg of hers for the kick, it hit him right on the stomach. “Oh! I’m sorry!” The Gryffindor quickly apologized as soon as she could. “Are you alright?” Hopefully, with her miniscule strength, it didn’t hurt Cyrus that much.

Cyrus wiped a stray bead of sweat off his brow and smiled when Raizel said she thought the warm-ups were cool. At least they weren't boring! Cyrus would have been disappointed to hear he was boring. Even as Raizel affirmed she was alright, Cyrus resolved to keep an eye on her — if anything happened to her under his watch, he wasn't sure he would ever forgive himself. He found himself momentarily quiet, tranquil, willing to listen for once instead of speak. As the autumnal breeze swayed around him and the warm oranges and golds of the trees' leaves shone in the gentle light of day, he felt like a representation of Anubis, except he was weighing the heaviness of words against the softness of a feather.

'Well, I think you're doing a wonderful job. Just be sure to ease into it! If you haven't done any of this before, then your body's probably not used to it.'

Anything more profound would be spared for now. Raizel's smile and small quip only made Cyrus's veins warm with joy, and he tapped his fingers together in elation. As much as he preached nonviolence, well, if the idea of punching people made Raizel smile, then so be it! 'Once, when I was... ten or something, I dunno... I saw these kids bullying another kid. I showed off my muscles and threatened to fight them, and they scattered pretty quick. I sure thought I was hot stuff back then!' He punctuated his sentence with a fluttery laugh.

When Raizel decided she wanted to try again, Cyrus nodded supportively. 'Good idea! Let's do it.'

He kept his gaze steadily on the younger girl as she positioned herself for the kick, nodding and providing constructive feedback as she prepared. She was doing great — it seemed that she really took all of his suggestions to heart, and that thought made Cyrus's smile widen. 'You're doing gr— oof!'

Cyrus hadn't been kicked in a long time, not since he'd stopped going to kickboxing classes years ago. He stepped back and coughed before stretching his arms up towards the sky and letting out a gentle laugh. 'It's okay! Just knocked the wind out of me! I'm not hurt, I promise. But I guess that's another teaching moment — calculating distance is hard. But you can learn to estimate the right distance by practising. So if you hold out your arm in front of you...' He adjusted his stance to demonstrate. '...and put your kicking leg behind you, then you'll have an idea of the right distance. You should almost, but not quite, be able to touch your target. Give or take a couple of inches.'

He gestured towards a nearby tree. 'Maybe we can try a tree as a target this time?'

That was awful, hurting the one that was teaching her but she’s glad it wasn’t that bad from the looks of it, easing some of her worries and making her sigh out of relief. If that was her putting more force into it and if she has more muscle than what she has now… maybe that would’ve hurt more and she would’ve felt more guilty about it. When the next set of instructions followed that blunder, Raizel didn’t waste any time to try and do the same thing as what Cyrus had demonstrated. Here she thought martial arts were just kicking and punching. “A tree would be great.” Really, it would. Better than accidentally kicking Cyrus again. Poor tree though.

With that said, she positioned herself in front of a tree, the same one that she had been practicing that Flipendo spell of hers before it went astray and found itself zooming towards Cyrus. Strange how an accident led to such a meeting. The wild spell didn’t hurt anyone luckily and she got to meet an awesome person like Cyrus. This was a win. “So…” Raizel started, taking a quick glance at the older boy. “Bullies.” She went back to what was mentioned earlier. “You threatened them with just your muscles?” That made her chuckle in an amused way. This boy must’ve looked so strong if all he had to do was flex his arms. Not to mention, it was a cool gesture, helping others from bullies and she sure can see him doing it with the way he responded to her Flipendo earlier, checking on others before him.

“You’re a good guy, you know.” She complimented him with a smile. “A good and cool guy.” And with that said, she took a deep breath before trying out that kick once more. The impact was enough to shake it just a bit, the sound of the leaves rustling can be heard. “Woah. That actually hit… and kind of hurts.” She muttered, chuckling in the end. She didn’t brace herself that well for the impact and it’s true. If it’s your first time doing it, your body won’t be used to it. Still, it was nice to be successful for once even if it’s not perfect. “You are a great teacher as well.”

Something about actively working to help Raizel made the weight that had lingered like a hint of malaise on Cyrus shoulders... lift. His lungs expanded more easily, making breathing easily attainable, and he no longer found himself sniffing the citrus perfume on his wrist to rid himself of the acrid stench of smoke.

Raizel's question regarding his memory made laughter bubble out of him, as if someone had shaken him like a fizzy and then poked a hole in the side of him. In fact, the side of his abdomen began to ache with the force of his laughter! 'Oh yeah. I was all, grrrr, and, look at my beefy arms! And I dunno if it was my obnoxiousness or my physical prowess, but you know what, it worked!'

He hadn't expected a lot of this encounter. What he found himself surprised by the most, though, were Raizel's kind words. They caused a brilliant smile to light up his face, followed by a shining in his eyes that would appear suspiciously akin to tears. 'Awh, really!? That means so much, thank you, I—' Cyrus cut himself off by pressing his lips together in a still warm smile. He blinked a bit to dispel the wateriness in his eyes. Little did Raizel know, but that was perhaps the highest compliment he'd ever received. After all, he had only ever striven for goodness.

Coolness, then, was just an added bonus.

'Oh, hey!' His voice was still a bit weak from trying not to cry earlier. 'That was good! Take a deep breath, shake it out—it'll definitely be a little jarring at first. But you had a good base, since you didn't fall over! And there was definitely power there, too! A bit more practice and you'll be a boss in no time.'

He faltered just slightly when Raizel offered yet another compliment. He glanced at her, expression open and warm, and cracked another open-mouthed smile. 'Thanks. It really does mean a lot. And I'd say you're a good student, too!' He gave a small look to the tree before returning his gaze to Raizel. 'Definitely wouldn't want to get on your bad side!'
