It honestly really wasn't even a surprise, but that didn't mean it didn't hurt. Their father was very clear that this was a choice. An option. If they could just shape up and do as they were told, they could stay. Cass had never really done very well in classes that weren't flying. But they had always done well enough in the practicals to pass, and them being prefect and editor and dueling co-captain had kept their father happy. Until they were handing in their badge and picking up a howler from the owlery and shoving it in their trunk, and not even bothering to attend classes at all. Something had finally snapped in the Ito child, and they were no longer running. They were facing the cold, harsh, reality. Their mother was dead and probably rolling in her grave in disappointment. They faced this reality with large amounts of chocolate frogs, every blanket they could find, and excessive amounts of staring at the walls.
Angry howlers turned to worried owls turned to requests for visits, and when they finally saw their father and stepmother again it was worry as well as anger written on their faces. Cass was a different child from the happy, bouncing off the walls with energy kid that they had been. No amount of bribery and threats and worried chats could seem to get them to stop staring at the floor, and it was with desperation that their father had wrote to his parents. Cass had never met their grandparents, and it wasn't like their was a family disagreement. They had blurry memories of a cold, elderly woman and man visiting with gifts when they were very little, but that was back when their mom was well... Alive. Family was roots that supported a tree though, as their father had always said. He had given them a deadline. Change something, anything, and start looking alive again and they could stay. If not, there was a place waiting for them in Japan. If their grandparents couldn't force them out of this slump, then no one could.
But it was like the Cass that everyone knew was gone, replaced with a strange sad sack of potatoes that didn't want to move from it's nest of tissues and cushions. So here they were, bags packed, looking at the halls of Hogwarts for what was probably the last time. Numb and so very alone and a disappointment.

It was just a normal Tuesday for Aston, really. It was after classes and Aston was just wandering the Corridors, not really feeling like going out into the grounds that day. His plan was to search for something to do, maybe an interesting armour to sketch, maybe finding a new book to read in the library. Sure he could be studying but there were so many options, options that were thrown out the window when he caught eye of who exactly he almost walked right past. Cass Ito, Aston liked to think that he is friends with the ex prefect, he certainly considered them a friend, which was why their recent absences were worrying at best. It was like all of a sudden they dropped off the face of the earth. First Aston stopped seeing them around in the duelling club, then Cass’ name disappeared from the Hogwarts Headliner, and he heard that they apparently handed in their prefect badge. The few times Aston saw them around the castle was odd to say the least, they seemed off. Sure Cass wasn’t always the easiest to deal with, there were days where Aston just couldn’t be bothered to deal with their personality and the name calling - seriously where did that “stalker” nickname even come from?
Point is, they were a joyous one, Aston thinks, a goofy, kind of wacky presence. Far from the perfect student or person but certainly nice to be around. But this Cass that stood before him was different, something was different, something was wrong. Aston could probably take a guess, that heavy air around them felt all too similar to those days where his mother first left. That air that surrounded his father. It hurt seeing him like that back then and it hurts seeing Cass like this now. “Cass?” That came out more uncertain then Aston wanted it to, his confusion leaking into his words. “You…what happened?” He doesn’t know what's going on, why would they be out in the corridors like this, why do they have those bags with them? Surely they wouldn’t be leaving like this, unceremoniously, just before the end of the school year. “What are the bags for? Surely you’re not-” Aston didn’t want to finish the question, didn't want to say the word. Leaving, that can't be what is happening here, right?

Staring off miserably into space was a full time occupation, and they almost didn't notice Aston walking around the corner because of it. They hadn't really seen much of the ravenclaw boy lately with all that was going on. He belonged to a brighter world, where people fell out of trees in perfect timing for Cass to accuse them of being a stalker. It felt like first year was so long ago now, and had taken all of the good things in their life with it. They looked up at him, their stupid messy hair getting in their face while they did. In contrast to their tired eyes and general miserable look, the other student still looked perfectly normal. Like nothing had happened. They supposed that in his world, that was true. Disappearing and hiding under their bed was a coping mechanism that left not many knowing what was up. Even those that had been closest with Cass hadn't heard a whisper. Aston was talking now, in English and everything. He said their name like it was a question, like maybe Cass had been replaced with a miserable evil twin. Unfortunately this was not the case. They just sort of started at him, because who else would they be?
Numb and cold and floating around in space, they listened to him ask them what had happened. What had happened? How could they tell him? How could he even begin to understand? Cass was utterly alone in this misery. As they thought these deep and sad thoughts, they stupid broom bag fell off their shoulder. In a moment of rage, they kicked it across the floor. They didn't deserve a broom anymore. They never had. Taking a deep breath and feeling slightly ashamed at their outburst, they looked up at Aston. "Yeah" they said "I'm leaving. You can keep the broom if you want". For so long that stupid broom had been their dream, and their holidays had been filled with long hours of bugging their father and trying to convince him that they were responsible and deserving of a better broom. Now the truth was clear. They weren't and had never been, but Aston probably was and either way they didn't want it anymore.
It was his problem now and he could either take it or throw it out a window or something. They didn't care. Flying was far from the top of their list of problems at the moment. "Bye" they said, all done with their brief spout of anger. The clock was ticking and they wanted to get back under a bed somewhere. Surely they had beds in Japan. Cass didn't know. They couldn't remember ever going to Japan. They guessed it took something big, like realising that your only child was a disappointment, to warrant a trip. Bags minus broom shouldered once again, they half walked half ran away. Everything in their wake was exactly the same, like they had never been there at all. Besides the broom bag on the floor.
