Welcome Ceremony | Occasion
Oogie stood in line, head raised defiantly and never thought she would ever be so happy to have a surname starting with the letter 'B', otherwise she would have had to wait centuries more it felt like. Even know she had to occupy her time by pulling at the cuffs of her jeans jacket. Her eyes narrowed as she gazed over the different tables, there were a total of four she could count and they all seemed like their own little cliques of people; kind of weird but not unsurprising. She just hoped she wouldn't end up at the blue table, if colors alone were to make the decision, she would much rather sit with the red or yellows, even green was acceptable but the kids at the tables seemed a little edgy at best.
"Brown, Oonagh"
Her voice was called and that was her cue to sit down on the wonky little chair, a staff member standing ready to drop that huge dusty hat on her head. She had seen a few kids who's head had been literally swallowed up by the accessory, luckily her hair would spare her from such a fate and the hat came to simply rest on top of her wild curls. She had seen the hat call out the names of the 'houses' but she had not been expected to hear a voice inside her head, freaky? Immediately she felt herself tense up defiantly as if she could stop the hat from accessing the wasteland that was her brain. 'A bit defiant are we? Rowdy too' she heard a old voice mutter inside her head and all she could think was that of course such a old hat would sound like an old dude from a store. 'Speak for yourself ye old thing' she thought back, tempted to glare at no one at all. 'Well I won't keep you waiting, the answer is quite clear to me, you will find friends, and rivalries in-'
"Gryffindor!".
Thinking about it, this had barely taken seconds. The conversation had been so short and if there was truly a person inside the hat, talking to her, then she was sure that was a big sign of cowardice. Not that it mattered in the end, but after such bold claims of the hat she had hoped for a little bit more confrontation! However there was a different matter to be addressed now. Cheers echoed through the hall and Oogie pulled the hat off angrily and stuffed it into the waiting arms of the staff member before stomping off to the table where she saw a few students beckoning her over. Well at the very least she would stick with the red ones. She got over and squeezed herself into an empty spot. What a rude piece of a cloth the hat was. There were so many more students waiting to be called to the hat, in her opinion, a sheer waste of time and she was starving. Someone on the train had mentioned a welcome feast and part of her had been looking forward to it but now she was simply feeling hangry. She grabbed one of the napkins sitting on the table and began to rip it apart into tiny pieces, just to give her hands something to do before she flipped over the table in frustration.
There was however simply no helping the long line and any interruptions to the 'ceremony' which frankly, why did they make it so public in the first place? Not that she cared but surely there were students who did? Back to the point, any interruption to the actual ceremony would mean she had to wait for her food even longer and truly she had not expected the train ride to take that long or she would have made herself another slice of buttered bread and cheese to take on the train. She gave a glare to the innocently floating candles all around, half expecting to spot a nylon string holding them up to the ceiling if she squinted hard enough.

Gonna Go Far

Linda came to the Gryffindor table to wait for all the new first years to come and have the Sorting ceremony. It was interesting to see who is joining them this year, but she would be lying to herself if she said she really enjoyed looking at it every time. As the next person went to the hat, Linda was happy to hear her joining Gryffindor.
Their table still had some empty spots, and one of them happened to be close to Linda. She smiled warmly when the first-year sat near her. They still had to wait for others to be sorted, and Linda found herself more interested in small talk with the new girl rather than in the sorting ceremony. It might have been rude, but she still attempted to seem like she was attentively listening to the hat.
Hi, I'm Linda. Welcome to Gryffindor. She spoke softly, lacking any excitement in her voice. She was still welcoming but without unnecessary enthusiasm. It's just one of many ceremonies, and she will attend 4 more. How was the ride to Hogwarts? Was she going to keep attending the sorting ceremony? Most probably the answer was yes. But she was no longer interested in getting as many friends as possible. Just occasional talk to someone new. It didn't matter if it turned out to be some friendship or they would meet rarely.
However, food here was as usual good. And it was always good to see who was in the same house. Not that she cared about it. Linda looked again at the line on first years that now was starting to be less. It was nice to see it moving and not stopping for a long time.

"Hi everyone!" Kayla said excitedly as she near bounded over to the Gryffindor table. She took a seat near the older student and continued with enough enthusiasm for the whole table.
"I'm Kayla! I can't wait to begin this new school year!" She smiled and looked around at the table, then to the girl next to her.
"I'm so excited, I had to hold it in during the train ride but after being told I'm a Gryffindor, I just can't hide it anymore!" She smiled big and started shaking her whole body excitedly. She took a dramatic deep breath to try and calm herself and continued. She probably already freaked out the whole table with her enthusiasm but it was a crash course on her personally. Her cheeks were rosy from the rush of energy, and she tried to reign it in, though it was clear she was having the time of her life.
"I'm hoping to be great with potions, so I can take over my mum's business later. She has her own shop and I want to show I'm ready to finally learn, and work with her." She spoke in a slightly calmer, but still enthusiastic voice.
She looked to the front of the hall, where the teachers were getting things ready.
"I wonder when the feast will start. My last name is an 'S,' so it shouldn't be long now, right? I can’t wait to try all the food. I’ve heard the lamb is incredible!" She then turned to the person next to her again, unable to stop herself.
"Have you been here long? I’m just so ready to learn everything. What classes are you excited for? What was your favorite class as a first year?"

As Oonagh was tearing apart the napkin leaving little flakes of tissue paper in her wake, she zoned out a little, before her attention was captured by a voice from a girl that was right with her. At first Oonagh expected a complain about Oogie squeezing in between them and frankly the expectation to wait for the hat to get to 'Z' was so dreadful she would not have minded a little altercation with another person. However the girl was actually being nice, somewhat at least and Oogie gave a nod at her. "Thanks, A like the colours," she mentioned, referring to, what she would learn, was the tell-tale red of the house of lions.
"It wis fine... Long though," she shrugged, her Scottish accent coming through thick and she did not really mind, it was part of her. And they were in Scotland. It had been a little stupid when she and her parents had to take a car ride to London just for the train to take her back to Scotland. Well at least they had put a movie on for her during the drive. But she was still done with sitting so she wanted to get done with the wait, finally eat and then explore the castle. Perhaps she should just sneak off, but also she was starving and therefore had to at the very least wait for the food to be served.
It took a small while but another kid joined them. Oogie had no idea where the hat was now in the alphabetical order and frankly she did not care to know aside from when it finally got to the end of 'Z'. She let the girl ramble on but when she told them that her last name started with the letter 'S' which was still far away from getting to the end of the alphabet, Oogie groaned and slammed her forehead against the table lightly. "End ma suffering... A am starving," she grumbled dramatically. Her blond hair spilling out around her like a stormy ocean of tangled curls.

Linda smiled with the mention of colors. Red. It was with their logo and even in the common room. Something she got used to. Something that no longer felt that special, but she would never admit it in talking to others. Linda still took a pride in being part of this house, even if she wasn't the stereotypical Gryffindor.
Linda couldn't agree more on how long the travelling was usually taking. She thought how it made little sense to leave Scotland to return to it back for those who live in this country.
The other girl joined them and Linda was surprised for a second. How energetic. However, probably she was like that too back in her first arrival. Hi, Kayla. I'm Linda. Glad you seem so enthusiastic about the coming year. How fascinating. But then again, these girls never attended balls yet. Balls here seemed to attract rather darker secrets that were not commonly known. Linda didn't go to the forest yet, but she heard how dangerous it was in certain time of month.
I'm sure you can learn potions if you spend time studying and improving. She smiled. Linda had no problem with any of the subjects so far. However, this year she was starting new subjects and she was looking forward to it.
She had to hold her laughter at the next words from both girls. It really depends on how much people are there still till the last letter in the alphabet. But basically all that line is all it takes till it will be done.
She turned to Oonagh. It should finish soon, don't worry. She spoke softly. Linda always ate something in the train. Returning her attention back to Kayla, she thought about it for a second. I'm starting my third year here. I guess I'm looking forward to new subjects and learning more spells and potions. It proves to be rather necessary. My first year? I think it was Charms. Probably potions and flying as well. What are you looking forward to? The last question was directed at both girls.

She was now sitting with two girls at the table. So far so good. While she was not the most chipper when it came to her own mood, she knew that she could throw that fact alone into her mom's face and reassure her. Her parents had sent her away to this school abroad after believing some crazy people about magic and all that, which was interesting enough. Sucked that she would have to suffer the consequences. One of the girls seemed more talkative than the other so Oonagh half focused on her, Linda she had introduced herself with, but most her focus went to being on the verge of starving and waiting for the food. She was a growing young lady after all and needed lots of food.
"Potions shoud be easy, ye juist throw stuff intae a cauldron an hope for the best," she agreed with the girl, throwing out the false fact nonchalantly as if she had studied the subject and now could call herself an expert on the matter. Then again she had spent a fair amount of her childhood mixing various substances together in the garden, using herbs and weeds that were accessible to her.
"It should finish soon, don't worry." Reassured the girl, Linda, more and Oonagh grumbled something unintelligible that sounded vaguely like a cuss into the table before raising her head. "It better..." She truly was judging the logistic of letting students travel all day and then deny them dinner until a way too long ceremony was finished. Why not serve the food simultaneously? Why would she care what colour and animal the other kids were assigned by that quite possibly lice ridden hat? It's not like the entire school deserved her attention like that. She would have to deal with the bunch of other students soon enough.
However occasionally she would glance over to where the stool with the hat was located and judged whoever sat down.

Linda found it not too far from the truth. Throwing and mixing. Surely it was part of what they had to do in Potions. If only it was always so easy as that... Then, perhaps, it wouldn't be so interesting as she could learn them all if that was the case.
If only it was always that easy. But then again, it can always create some mess and chaos if it's failed to brew. She mused. Maybe she could try something new this year? She stayed rule-abiding so far, but sometimes it was really boring.
Linda glanced at the sorting. It should be done soon, but even she started to feel hungry. It was getting boring to have to sit through the same thing every year. Now she had absolutely no enthusiasm about new students joining their house or others. Nor she was particular interested in watching them all arrive and stand.
New students, each one with their own story. Some of them with a lot of questions, left alone in an unknown world. The world they couldn't talk about at their home if they didn't come from the wizarding family.
Linda didn't know about it that well. She was just aware that not everyone here was from the wizarding world. How did it feel to get to this place for those who had muggle background? The place no muggle could see.
She had no particular questions for the girl near her. And there was no particular need to feel the silence. I wonder why they are always having to stand in a queue while we are all sitting and just staring at them. Anyway we all will chat with friends more than pay attention to who goes where. She paused. The words were already said, but now it sounded far from welcoming. However, she didn't care. It was what it was and even she had to admit that she'd rather catch up with her friends, than would keep staring at all those new students.

"Oh Ah looooove causing messes an chaos, so that sounds ####ing amazing!" she gasped in delight, something finally catching her attention enough for her to raise her head off the table. Only to get the visual reminder that there was still a distinctive lack of food on their tables - her dad had spoken of a feast or whatever, when he had dropped her off and she had been looking quite forward to it after such a long journey. And now she had to wait. It almost made her want to slam her head back into the wooden furniture at risk of getting a concussion on her first day. The only thing stopping her was, that if this school was anything like the school she grew up with, the only food she would be receiving where the nurse resided, would be stale crackers and fruit that had seen better days.
"There be tae much new students anyway, ye ken? Ah just stepped down from thare after whit felt like een hour an that were only letter B!" She began resting her elbows on the edge of the table and propped her head into the palm of her hands, staring off into the distance in what could be described as a quite longing, sulky manner. She just really wanted to dig into the promised food already.
