Dale had taken time out of his busy schedule of reading and taking naps to come down to the great hall for one very specific reason, he wanted to learn how to play chess, not just regular chess since he already knew how to do that, he wanted to learn how to play wizards chess. The first time he tried, he attempted to pick up the pieces, but for some reason, the pieces just would not budge... He assumed he was missing something, maybe he had to use his wand for something, it was wizards chess after all. He had looked in the library but could not find anything related to how to play the game, and he was too afraid that he would be judged if he asked other people in the great hall how to play.

He looked at the board in front of him, the pieces were perfectly lined up at both sides of the board, the pieces looked a bit... different from the ones he was used to, the knight looked like a real knight instead of just a horse, he tried again to move a pawn on the board, no matter how hard he tired the damn thing would not move. Dale sighed at looked at the board with a confused expression, trying to figure out what secrets it held.

Jorah was sitting in his usual spot at the Ravenclaw table facing the fire place. Earlier, he was feeling peckish so he decide to make the trip from the West Tower for a bite to eat. To avoid talking to any of the other students, Jorah brought with him the latest issue of the Hogwart's Headliner. Jorah read through his horoscope for this month while he worked on a plate of baked ziti.
There'll be visitors, nostalgic interactions, stimulating discussions, and improvement. Family disputes start settling. Begin a project during the full moon. You'll improve at expressing ideas and communicating emotionally. You'll want to explore the universe; receiving enlightenment about your goals and dreams.
You'll improve at expressing ideas and communicating emotionally. That's definitely something I need, he thought to himself. Since the ball, Jorah had been struggling with new romantic feelings for his best friend Ruthie. He just didn't know how to deal with these emotions or how much to tell her.

Jorah put the newspaper down and shoveled another helping of ziti into his mouth. Across the table, he noticed a Slytherin boy, probably a first year by the looks of him, messing around with a chessboard. It looked like he was trying to physically move the pieces with his hands, but to no avail. What is he doing? Has he never played Wizard's chess before? Jorah tried to ignore him, staring back at his paper. He's probably a Muggle born. Poor guy, it must be overwhelming coming to a place like this without your parents to guide you. Jorah thought of his own family and how lucky he was to have them. He and his younger sister had been fighting a lot the past summer, but now Jorah missed her and wished she was here. Jorah peeked back up at the boy, he was still struggling to figure it out. I suppose I could help him, it would give me an excuse to sit at the Slytherin table and be closer to the fireplace. Jorah cleaned his plate and made with way over to the Slytherin table, plopping down on the bench across from the boy.

"You can't move the pieces by picking them up. They can move themselves just fine, you just have to tell them where to go. For instance, Pawn to D4." At Jorah's command, the white queen side pawn moved two spaces forward. "There, now its your turn."

Dale reached down to pull his wand out of his usual holding place, his sock, and try to... do something with it. But before he could some guy came over and told him all he had to do was "tell them where to go" and then he moved his pawn to D4, he said it was his turn now. Dale felt instantly embarrassed, he must've looked like an idiot trying to forcefully move the pieces, Dale looked down at the board... it had been quite a while since he had last played chess... "P-Pawn to D5" The pawn slid up two spaces, facing off with the other guys pawn.

Dale looked in awe at the chessboard, the pieces really just move on their own! Amazing, Dale wondered what made them move, what kind of magic was used on it? He would have to find the answers to his questions later, for now, he had to focus on this game. The other guy seemed like he knew what he was doing, Dale quickly tried to recall how all the pieces moved... bishops go diagonal, rooks go in lines... and knights go in some weird L shape? He hoped he had that right.

Pawn to D5, the boy responded. His pawn moved forward to face off Jorah's pawn. The game had officially begun. Pawn to E4. Will he take my pawn, initiating the gambit?, Jorah thought to himself. Pawn to C6. No, I guess not. No matter, I'll just take his pawn then. Pawn takes D5. Jorah's pawn sprang to life, pulling out two swords and slashing the boy's pawn into pieces with a single stroke. First blood! Pawn takes D5. The boy's backwards pawn destroys Jorah's leading pawn. An even exchange. Knight to C3, Pawn to H5. Queen to F3, Bishop to G4. Queen takes D5, Queen takes D5. Knight takes D5, Pawn to E6. Knight to C7, Check.

The game was moving quickly, both Queens were already out of the game. Jorah had the advantage, being up one pawn in material, but more importantly by putting pressure on the boy's King. He looked up at the boy. "Not a bad start." While the boy considered his next move, Jorah cleaned the chessboard of the broken fragments left behind by the destroyed chess pieces. He made a two neat piles of rubble to his right. The white pile of rubble taken from his fallen pieces, he placed closer to himself. He placed the red pile closer to his opponent. Jorah didn't have to do this, but it was quick way to see who was winning by comparing whoever created the larger pile of debris. At this point, the red pile was slightly larger than the white pile.

Dale was amazed by wizards chess, it was amazing to see the pieces fight and attack each other. But the amazingness of the magic did distract him, he could tell the guy was pretty skilled at this game. He had lost quite a few pieces at this point, but so had the other guy, they had both lost their queens, Dale thought he might have a winning chance here. The other guy said " Dale shook his head and agreed with the boy. Dale noticed there was a considerable amount of rumble on the board, he assumed it would go away... using magic of course, but instead, the other guy just wiped the board clean and made two neat stacked of rumble next to the board. The pile of red rubble was a bit bigger than the white pile...

Dale assumed that the red pile was his broken pieces and the white pile was the other guys... so Dale was losing, not by much... but still losing, that bothered Dale for some reason, he was never really competitive in any way, but still, he leaned forward a little into a more comfortable position and put his full effort into the game.

King to D8, the boy responded, moving his King to safety.
Knight takes A8. Yes, now I have his Rook! Pawn to B6.
Bishop to G5, Check! Run little fella, I'm coming for you. Pawn to F6.
Bishop to F4, Pawn to E5.
Pawn takes E5, Another pawn to add to my collection, mwahaha. Pawn takes E5. I'll take that trade.
Bishop takes E5, Revenge! Bishop to A3.
Pawn takes A3. Wow, I took his Bishop with a Pawn. Knight to C6.
Pawn to F4, Rook to H7.
Rook to D1, Check! You can run, but you can't hide. King to E7.
Bishop to D6, Check! Like I said.

Jorah was putting pressure on the boy's King while taking some valuable pieces, including a Rook and a Bishop. Jorah considered the value of the pieces that were destroyed. Pawns are worth about 1 point each, Knights and Bishops 3 points each, Rooks 5 points, and the Queen, 9 points. Jorah did a quick calculation. So that leaves me with 20 points and him, 10. While taking more pieces was important, so was developing your pieces. If Jorah wasn't careful, he could find himself with an enemy pawn behind his lines and on its way to become a Queen. If that happened, he would be hard pressed to avoid a checkmate on his King. Jorah waited patiently for his opponent's next move, knowing that he himself took his time before making a move.

Dake had no idea what was going on, he just kept moving his pieces in ways he thought made sense... while he remembered the basic rules of the game he still was clearly losing, his king had been in check a total of 3 times, while he had put the boys king in check a total of 0 times, this guy really knew how to bring on some pressure, unlike Dale who just kept making dumb moves. He leaned back into his chair, he had given up but he didn't want the boy to have an unfulfilling game.

He decided to take the time to try to understand what he did wrong, almost all of his special pieces were gone, but he did have a few pawns. Dales's biggest weakness was not being careful enough, he moved his pieces into the open with no regard for their lives. "Maybe I can ask this guy for tips later..." Dale thought to himself, he was sure the boy wouldn't mind helping him out, he seemed like a pretty good guy, helping some random guy trying to forcefully move pieces that can't be moved, Dale hoped no one was judging his idiotic actions.

King to D7.
Pawn to H3, Bishop takes D1. Dale takes Jorah's Rook. Ouch, that was a heavy loss.
King takes D1, King takes D6. We trade Bishops. An even trade, but I need to make up for losing that Rook.
Knight to F3, Knight to H6.
Bishop to D3, Rook to H8.
Rook to E1, Rook takes A8. Dale takes Jorah's Knight. Wow, I cant believe I let that happen!
Bishop to C4, Rook to D8.
Rook to E6, Check! King to D7.
Knight to E5, Check! King to C7, Check! Dale checks Jorah for the first time.
Score: Jorah-23, Dale-21.

Jorah was quickly losing the momentum he had built up early game. Dale was making a mid-game comeback! Taking Jorah's Rook had earned him some much needed respite, but Jorah had planned for that possibility, immediately capturing the piece which took his Rook. What Jorah did not expect was to lose his Knight. "Wow, can I be honest with you? I totally forgot I had a Knight right there. Good move," Jorah complimented his opponent. A few moves later and Jorah was back to putting pressure on Black's King. Rook to E6, Check! Dale fleas with his King. Knight to E5, Check! Jorah puts Dale in Check yet again, but his response was different this time. King to C7, Check! For the first time in the game, Dale puts Jorah in Check. "Haha, now it's my turn to run away," Jorah joked. "You've caught up quite nicely actually. In terms of points, we're almost even. The only thing I would suggest is to develop your pawns more, you'll need them for the end game. Another thing I have to remind myself is to control the center of the board. The player who can control the center of the board, usually has more moves at their disposal and is in the better position." Jorah ended his advice by extending his right hand toward the boy, introducing himself. "I'm Jorah, by the way. Nice to meet you."

Dale looked over the board, still no idea what he was doing, but it seemed like they were just about even in term of pieces that is, but then again he had no idea how much each piece was worth or if one piece was worth more than another. And he was able to get the other guys king in check finally, Dale took that as a victory for himself.

Dale jumped as he heard the other guy speak, he was not expecting it, he sorta assumed they where just gonna play in silence, but he was glad he stuck up some conversation, he offered Dale some pretty good advice, he said that he had forgotten that he had a knight there, "If I'm being honest iv actually have no clue what I'm doing... it been years since I last played chess, and never wizards chess!" Dale said looking at the board again in awe. "Thanks for the advice! I'll keep it in mind for next time I play." Dale said with a smile. Dale turned his attention back to the magical board. "My name is Dale, I think I saw you at the masked ball... But it's nice to meet you Jorah."

Dale mentioned the Masquerade Ball and Jorah felt the ache return to his back. King to C1, Knight takes E5. Jorah retreats, Dale takes Jorah's knight. "Ah you saw me at the the ball...then you know what happened?" Rook takes E5, Pawn to G6. Jorah takes Dale's knight. Jorah rolled his shoulder back, working out the pain from where he was stabbed. Pawn to A4, Pawn to A5. "What happened that night was insane, it almost seems"...he trailed off, his voice quieter ..."like a bad dream." Scenes from the chaos filled his head. A towering part-giant, a raging inferno, screams of terror, blood, and pain. Jorah preferred to forget about the events of that night, but like it or not he was changed. His relationship with Ruthie had been complicated and his near brush with death left scars, both physical and mental. He was terrifiied of suffocating like that again.

Jorah snapped back into focus. Pawn to H4, Knight to G4. Rook to E7, Check. King to C8. Dale retreats. "See how I'm putting pressure on your King?" Bishop to E6, Check. King to D8. Dale retreats again. "Every move that I force you to flee with your King, is an opportunity to attack me or to develop your pieces that has been wasted." Rook to G7, Knight to E3. Rook takes G6, Knight to C4. Jorah takes Dale's pawn. "While you run around, I'll advance my pawns until eventually I make it to the end of the board and resurrect my Queen." Pawn to F5. Dale resigns. Final score: 28 - 24 "Good game, Dale. It was a pleasure to meet you. Let me now if you ever want to play again sometime." Jorah took out his wand and aimed it at the center of the chessboard. He gave his wand a kind of clockwise swirl while reciting the incantation, "Reparo." All the tiny pieces of red and white debris swirled from their piles and into the air in a mini vortex just over the board. The tiny fragments assembled themselves back together as they flew through the air before coming to a rest on the board in their correct starting positions. The chess board looked brand new, ready for the next set of players.
