A Glimpse into the Future
When Jorah heard that Professor Benoit was giving free palm readings, he scoffed at the idea. He didn't much like the idea of divination. If one could predict the future, what does that say about free-will? Are we all just biological automatons going through the motions, blindly living under the false guise that we are free. Then again it could be possible, there was a precedent, Jorah reasoned. The Old Texts mention many prophecies and stories of interpreting the future from dreams. Whether any of that was true was still up for debate, but the wizard community believed in divination. Jorah's mother told him that within the Ministry of Magic, there exists a whole department for storing records of prophecies. Maybe somethings things were always meant to happen, but others could be changed, a universe of constants and variables.
Jorah wasn't sure how he felt on the matter, but he had no one else to turn to. Since the ball, things hadn't been the same between him and Ruthie. You would think that if Jorah was going to recall anything from that night, it would have been the fire or the Half-giant trying to kidnap him, but whenever Jorah thought about the ball, the first thing that came to his mind was Ruthie in her dress or the smile she made when he placed those flowers in her hair. Jorah had never dealt with emotions like this before and unfortunately they were for his best friend. The one person he needed to talk to about this, just so happened to be the cause of his distress. Jorah didn't have many friends and if these new feelings scared Ruthie away, he would be lost. He needed to know what to do, if this palm reading could give him some idea, then maybe it was time to start believing.
Jorah traveled up the North tower to Professor Benoit's office. I hope I'm going the right way. As a first year, he didn't spend much time in this part of the castle. Jorah entered what he thought was the divination classroom. He found a room decorated with vibrant drapes and rugs. Instead of desks, it was filled with dozens of small circular tables and poufs for sitting. Definitely not your typical classroom. This has to be it. Jorah spotted a small staircase leading up to a doorway without a door, but covered with lines of hanging beads. Jorah climbed the steps and parted the beads. He was assaulted with the fragrance of coffee and incense, not bad, but unexpected. Benoit's office was just as colorfully decorated. Jorah noticed a table in the center of the room with a deck of cards and a glowing crystal ball. "Um, Professor Benoit?" Jorah stopped just past the room's entrance. "Sorry to just barge in like this, I would have knocked, but you don't seem to have a door. I hope that I'm not disturbing you, professor. My name is Jorah Moussa. I heard you were giving palm readings?"

A Glimpse into the Future
Nadège was hunched over a few tarot cards laying before her in a Celtic spread. When the boy entered, signalled by the rattling of plastic beads, Nadège lifted her head and sat up, grinning, before casually beckoning him over to sit at the round table. "Not a disturbance at all, Jorah. Welcome; I don't think I've seen you around. What year are you, Mister?"
"That's correct! Palm readings for my book in exchange for house points." The previous month's House Cup had been a close competition between Ravenclaw and Gryffindor; only an eight point difference granting Gryffindor's win. Nadège wasn't surprised at all when most of the students interested in her palm readings turned out to be from Ravenclaw. They clearly wanted that trophy back and would do almost anything for it. Either that, or they had a genuine interest in the subject; intuition was a Ravenclaw trait after all. She would have stopped to wonder where Jorah fell between the two, but that was nothing a reading couldn't reveal.
"Come on in. Let me get all of this out of the way for you." The professor circled her hand over the deck and they all arranged themselves back into a leather pouch for safe-keeping. The crystal ball dimmed as she reached for it, then she stood and pushed her chair back with her heel. With the cards, it was placed on a shelf behind her and Nadège swiftly returned to her table. "Before we start, what troubles bring you here today, if any? Besides wanting house points, of course."

A Glimpse into the Future
Jorah found Professor Benoit at the round table studying tarot cards. She welcomed him with a smile, directing him to sit at the table. When asked what year he was, Jorah replied, "I'm a first year, professor. I like your office, it's comfy and it smells nice." To his delight she confirmed that she was in fact giving palm readings. He would have felt silly to come all this way for nothing, bothering a professor nonetheless.
Professor Benoit circled her hand over the deck of cards, with that they magically stacked themselves and flew into a leather pouch, clearing a space on the table. Wow, thought Jorah impressed with her magic, she didn't even use a wand or recite a spell. Jorah took a seat at the table. She dimmed the light from the crystal ball with a motion from her hand, placed the leather pouch of tarot cards on a shelf, then returned to the table.
She asked Jorah what brought him here today. A curious question for someone who was supposed to be able to tell the future, shouldn't that answer be obvious to her?, he thought. To be fair, the reading hasn't even begun yet. Jorah made a conscious effort to leave all of his judgement outside, he was going to come at this with an open mind. Now how to answer her question without seeming foolish. "Well you see...there is this friend. She's my best friend, and I just wanted to know how our friendship looks in the future. You know, maybe we stop being friends or maybe...I don't know, something happens and we become more than friends." Why couldn't you just tell her that you like this girl and want to know if its safe to ask her out? Jorah waited for a response, bracing himself for her to tease him. Coming here was a mistake.

A Glimpse into the Future
When Jorah revealed that his worries were love related, (or rather puppy love, because what could a pair of first-years possibly understand about that?), Nadège couldn't help but smile, dimples adorning her cheeks. Having taught professionally for over a year, it was obvious when one student fancied another in class, especially when others teased them for it loud enough for her to hear. The professor found it laughable when teenagers believed they were being discreet in her presence about such things, as if she hadn't had a childhood of her own. Nevertheless, it must have taken Jorah a lot of courage to open up about his feelings, to a stranger no less, and so it would be beneath her to make a big deal out of it. It was a natural part of growing up, after all.
Nadège waved him over to the seat in front of her, willing to help. Playing match-maker was difficult work, and from time to time even repetitive— advice for love was one of her more commonly requested readings— but she felt pride and great honour in being allowed to assist a person in such matters. Contrary to what many people expected, she was no mind reader nor could she make miracles happen, but she could try her hardest to give an honest reading. These didn't always end in a way the subject hoped, and Jorah was still quite young. Holding her hand out for his, she said, "I see. Sit here, please and thank you. What's this girl's name?"

A Glimpse into the Future
Jorah shifted his weight on the chair from one side to the other, attempting to get more comfortable. He was nervous about what Professor Benoit might ask him, about what she might say. He wasn't completely sold on the whole idea of soothsaying, but he was desperate. He needed to know what to do. Should he pursue a romantic relationship with his best friend? Should he risk losing her and all their mutual acquaintances for a feeling? It was stupid really, how quickly things changed. Ruthie and Jorah were compatible from the very beginning. That's what led them to be such good friends, but then something changed the night of the masquerade ball. It was like a switch flipped inside of his head after he saw her in that dress. Then came the half-giant attack and the stabbing. As he laid on the ground, struggling to breathe with a knife jutting out of his back, it was Ruthie's smile that came to his mind before he finally succumbed to his injuries and passed out. Maybe it was a mixture of PTSD with pre-teen hormones, but how he viewed Ruthie had definitely been altered. He wasn't sure if she felt the same way, so logically it was best to keep her as a friend rather than risk losing her entirely...but Jorah wanted more.
"What's this girl's name?," Professor Benoit asked. What!? Jorah's anxiety spiked, his palms sweating slightly. Did she really need to know her name? He paused before offering his reply. "Uh, well, her name is Ruthie...Ruthie Greer." Jorah took in a breathe and let out a calming exhale. Up until this point, his affection for her had been kept a secret, but now it felt painfully obvious that he fancied the girl. However...it felt liberating to say it out loud. Jorah didn't have many friends and the pressure of this secret was holding him hostage. Jorah laid all his cards out on the table. He wiped his sweaty palms on his pants and extended his arms, presenting his palms to Professor Benoit. "Honestly, I like Ruthie and I want to tell her how I feel. I need to know if that is a good idea. Do we have a future together?"
