To See the Future
@Nadège Benoit
~ * ~Ruby hadn't initially planned to volunteer for Professor Benoit's palm readings, but after much deliberation, she had found herself on her way to the professor's office. She had an insatiable curiosity, which extended to all aspects of her life. To her, anything that she could gain knowledge from was beneficial. She knew very little about divination, and had perhaps even frowned on it in previous years, but she reasoned with herself that there must be some truth to it. It was a form of magic and a subject in Hogwarts, so there must be some substantial value of it.
It would be best to keep a neutral opinion on the matter, rather than frown upon it when she still knew so little about it. By getting her palm read, she would be provided with an opportunity to learn and ask questions, and she would never pass that up. It would also help the professor, and perhaps it could tell the young student something more about herself and her future.
The soft patter of her footsteps provided a peaceful soundtrack for her thoughts, the rhythm constant and even. She had never been to the professor's office, and a curiosity regarding that also lingered in her mind. She reached the open entrance and peered inside, standing idly for a moment. She didn't want to barge in, as that would be impolite, but there was nothing to knock on, so she would have to content herself with speech instead, even though the beads' rattling had announced her presence. “I hope that now is a good time. I'm here for the palm reading,” the girl began, her ice-blue eyes sweeping around the room. It was certainly interesting and unique, and any room decorated with a personal touch could say a lot about a person. The smell was strong but not unpleasant, and Ruby found herself intrigued by the woman and the prospect of gaining knowledge.~ * ~

To See the Future
She had just finished reading another student's hands; a sweet Hufflepuff named Serena, when a different face walked into her office, announcing herself through the rattling of the doorway beads. Looking up from her table, Nadège noticed that the young student was someone she hadn't seen before. A castle as big as Hogwarts it was no surprise to see a new face day in and out. Nadège wasn't afraid of new people and always wanted to leave a good impression on them for the sake of her subject. Although a novice in professional teaching, her experience in Divination served as a means of social connection.
"It's a perfect time. You can come in," she said while waving the student in, and in the candlelight Ruby could probably see her inviting grin. Nadège was far from a strict teacher. If her choice of decor didn't make her laid-back personality obvious, perhaps student word of mouth could. Those that could stay awake long enough in her lessons rumoured of her homework being quite easy to grasp.
"You can take a seat here. I'm Professor Benoit," Nadège introduced herself from the cushion. "How are you today? Thank you for being gracious enough to help me out."

To See the Future
~ * ~@Nadège BenoitThe professor's presence seemed… relaxing. It was pleasant to be around her. She seemed friendly, beckoning to Ruby with a kind smile. The girl returned it with a gracious smile of her own, making her way over. The way she carried herself was with a sense of grace, a trained elegance in her movements as she came to settle near the professor. Her posture was perfect out of habit, and there was a sharp intelligence and confidence in her. She glanced around, observing and analysing what she could, noting anything particularly unusual. In doing this, Ruby could try to glean every bit of knowledge that she could from this visit, even if the knowledge of the room was just information on what the professor was like and where she spent some of her time. All in all, it was comfortable and peaceful, and it looked like a space that the professor dearly loved.
Acknowledging Professor Benoit, Ruby gave a courteous nod. “Ruby Cazares. I'm well, thank you, and you? It's a pleasure to help out. I don't know if you need any specifics—like a question, or something—but I think that I would just like a general reading. Is there anything I should know beforehand? I was also hoping to learn more about your subject while I'm here, as I know very little about it.” She spoke clearly, smoothly, and with a smile on her face. She leaned forward slightly, not nearly far enough to infringe on the professor's personal space, but enough to show that she was engaged and paying attention, and to maintain contact. And I'm also hoping to have something to help change or challenge my views, she thought, but she didn't say that aloud. Divination was a subject that even some of those in the magical world were skeptical of. Ruby wasn't strictly among them, but she also wasn't sure how much truth she believed the subject had. After all, although she had to believe in magic, especially coming from a pure-blood family, but she also enjoyed science.
How would her palm even be read? What was it based on? How had the methods of doing it been discovered? What affirmed them as truth? How much error could be involved? What was key to getting it right? What made the professor want to do it? Why did she need to collect people's handprints? What made the professor get into divination anyway, and then want to teach it? Why specifically that? The questions went on, and Ruby had to focus on something else so that she could try to stop the barrage of questions for one moment. Her hands were folded on the edge of the table, and she turned one to be palm-up. She paused for a moment to look at it. How could something like that, something that seemed so ordinary and simple, hold so much information that the professor would be able to figure out? It was fascinating, how things that were normal and taken for granted could actually have a lot of history and complexity behind them, and there could be a lot of knowledge to be gained regarding any single thing.
Ruby noticed a slight flutter of excitement as she considered the prospect of learning new things from this. Any information was welcome to her, and she tried to gain as much as possible, mainly just for the sake of it. There was a whole world of life and possibilities at her fingertips at any time, and she intended to not waste a minute of her time. This would be worth it, too, she was sure of it. Why wouldn't it be? What did she have to lose from this? She could admit that she was a little nervous about what Professor Benoit would see or find, and, despite how it sounded, she wasn't sure if she was okay with many people knowing too much about her. She didn't have anything to hide, but the idea of it just rubbed her the wrong way. There must surely be a limit to how much this could say about her, after all, and it wasn't like the professor would dig too deep… probably. It would be alright. This was meant to be something fun, educational. To help the professor and not worry about herself—so that's what she would do.Word Count: 724 words
