That Good ol’ Morning Harvest
River lazily dragged her small feet out of the bed, and shivered as they met the cold floor below her bed. Winter was well on the way, that was sure, and outside the window, it was still quite dark over the grounds of Hogwarts. The only reason she had gotten up this early in the morning, was because of a certain professor, asking of students to do the morning harvest, in return of a nice little reward, and River was not going to pass, she even enjoyed helping out with things like these.@Lark Flaer
The girl didn’t really mind getting up early, and she liked walking down the quiet and unpopulated halls of the castle. It was definitely something different from the usual bustling corridors.
River tucked her small pale hands into the sleeves of her blue woolen sweater, it was nice and comfortable. Her hair was a mess, like usual, but she didn’t really think much of it. The red curls bounced around her shoulders as she walked steadily on her way to the grounds.
She was meeting up with another student on this exciting quest for the morning. She wasn’t entirely sure where they would be meeting, but the young ravenclaw figured it would be a good shot to head right out to the greenhouses first.
A big yawn appeared on River’s face as she left the castle. Now, the chilly, but fresh air of the grounds were swirling around her small frame. She sniffled quietly, and hurried to the greenhouses. It was nice, walking around this early in the morning, as the sun was slowly but surely making it’s way over the horizon. The greenhouses were not far, and she quickly got into the rows of small buildings filled with plants of many different sorts. She knew some of them could be dangerous, but she was quite sure that they wouldn’t need to worry about them today... right?
River scanned the different houses, and noticed the one they would be working in. She walked up to the doorway, and saw the room was prepared for the drying of herbs. First though, they would need to be harvested.
River decided it might have been best to wait by the greenhouse, for the student she would be working with, and so she stood there, waiting in the chilly air.WC || 389

Pulling on her favorite leather boots, Lark blinked her golden eyes hard trying to stave off the sleep trickling back into her body. She had chosen to stay up just a little longer than she really should have the night before reading over a couple passages for Transfiguration. Covering an open mouthed yawn, Lark peeled herself from bed and made her way towards the Common Room, head popping out from the sweater she had been yanking on with one hand.
"Mornin." A mumbled greeting to a couple others who had gotten up early for who knows why... Lark only was alive at this hour as she had agreed to help out with an errand for the Herbology Professor. He seemed like a really nice gentleman and Lark had been enjoying his classes for sure. She wasn't well versed in Herbology but found all the plants intriguing, especially when getting a sketch or two in. Tossing the strap to her bag around her shoulder, Lark left the Ravenclaw Commons behind and trudged her way through the castle.
"Gloves... Tweezers..." Murmuring to herself as she walked, raising her eyes every so often to be sure not to bump into anyone and that she was still going the right direction, Lark checked on some supplies she had tossed in her bag. She honestly wasn't sure if she would need any of it.. she had never dried herbs before it was something her mother typically did as her "me time" away from the house.. which usually was code for being upset with Lark's father.
Reaching the outside air sent a chill down the girl's spine as she walked nearer to the greenhouse. She had signed up to meet another Ravenclaw student to help out but was worried maybe she had misread the owl and was supposed to meet them in the Common Room? A nervous biting feeling began to nag at the back of her mind. Hurrying her pace, Lark caught sight of someone outside of the greenhouse. Curly red hair and blue sweater, she could've sworn she looked familiar but maybe they had only passed each other in the Commons or Great Hall.
"Hey! Hope you haven't been waitin' long!" Lark called out as she reached the girl. She have an apologetic smile. Shouldve rushed here! She scolded herself internally. Standing in front of the fellow Ravenclaw, Lark gave a shiver. "Sorry!" Extending her hand she introduced herself. "Name's Lark. Thanks for lettin' me help out today!" Opening the door to the greenhouse with her free hand, she held it for the girl to go in first wondering if anyone else would be in there as well.

River looked around impatiently as her nose and cheeks were already going red form the cold. She wondered whether this year would have one of those unbearably cold winters, or if this was as cold as it would get. Hoping for the second one, she pulled out a couple gloves from her pockets, and slipped them on to her petite hands. They were quite snug on her short fingers, but they didn't help much with keeping warm.@Lark Flaer
Her head turned as her attention was grasped by the sound of footsteps approaching the greenhouses. The figure walking towards the ravenclaw, was a girl, who looked familiar from a place that River could not precisely pinpoint at the moment. After all, they were in the same house, which meant it would be nearly impossible to go a single month without at least catching a glimpse of one another.
As the girl walked up, River put on a smile and waved carefully to her. "Hey! Hope you haven't been waitin' long!", the girl said as she approached. "Not at all, I just arrived right before you actually", River answered, and smiled. The girl in front of her had fair skin, with freckles spread across her face. River's cold grey and blue eyes met a pair of warm golden ones. "Sorry!" the girl said, as her had reached out toward River. "Name's Lark. Thanks for lettin' me help out today!" the redhead looked at the outstretched hand for a moment, before taking it in a careful handshake, "Nice to meet you, I'm River... And really I don't think this is really something to thank me for", she smiled and shivered slightly beneath her large baggy sweater.
Lark opened the greenhouse door, which had a slight creak to it, and River stepped through and entered.
The greenhouse had been cleared and prepared for the collecting and drying of herbs, just like the professor had mentioned earlier. There were apparently a multitude of herbs to harvest, and collect into small bundles tied together. Still, as River took a good scan of the room, there weren't actually any herbs currently inside, "Oh, right", she exclaimed, and turned to face Lark. "We need to gather the herbs from outside, in the garden, and bring them here to dry after". She sighed quietly, that meant spending more time outside in the chilly autumn air. I really should have worn a warmer sweater for this, "Well, this is going to be fun... right?", her voice carried a slight sarcastic tone to it. The 2nd year chuckled, and walked out to the exit into the garden area.
This is more like it, she thought, as her eyes laded upon a whole garden full of various different herbs. She noticed a few that she recognized ad knew the name of. "I guess we could start out with some lavender... or perhaps the Thyme... No wait, maybe dittany". The young ravenclaw had always been quite interested in herbs and plants. She believed they had personalities too, and they need the right care and treatment to live nice and healthy. "Yeah, I think I'll start out with gathering some dittany", she told Lark, as she quickly moved over to the herbs with her gloves "So... what do you think of herbology? Do you enjoy it?" she asked without looking up at the girl, as begun carefully gathering the plants in her hand.WC || 561 (561+389=950 total)

Following River into the greenhouse, Lark stopped short and took a look around. Seemed to be just the two of them.
"We need to gather the herbs from outside, in the garden, and bring them here to dry after"
Lark gave a nod and laughed silently at the thought of having to go right back out into the cold. Well, at least she had dressed for it granted if the wind picked up it might not be enough to stave off the damp chill in the air. "Well, this is going to be fun... right?" Grinning at the tone in River's voice Lark turned back around to the doorway. "Oh, absolutely! Never get enough ah' the fresh Scottish air!" She smirked and followed the girl out. It couldn't be too, too bad, Lark thought. If they were hunkered down over the plants and moving their arms it might be enough to keep their blood flowing and not let the chill sink in. Standing next to River, Lark's eyes surveyed the plants before them. At first glance she wasn't sure what was what...
"I guess we could start out with some lavender... or perhaps the Thyme... No wait, maybe dittany"
Oh thank Merlin.. Lark breathed a sigh of relief. River seemed to know much more than her about the herbs. She knew some basic ones and some for cooking but not much else and definitely not potions wise. Perhaps she had heard their names here or there but couldn't put names to leaves and be positive they wouldn't kill a man.. or two. Giving a determined nod towards River as she decided on dittany for her own gathering to start with, Lark made her way over to the plot of purple plants she did recognize that River had mentioned. The smell instantly reminded her of her mother and it brought a smile to the girl's face.
"So... what do you think of herbology? Do you enjoy it?"
"So far I am liking it! Professor MacTavish is such a great teacher. He really knows his stuff." Kneeling on the edge of the garden bed, Lark pulled at her gloves and rummaged in her bag hoping she had remembered some small sheers her mother had packed for her, probably for sewing but Lark doubted she would be doing any of that anytime soon. "He brought up water plants last class and the Great Lake. Mentioned to us about Gillyweed." Carefully snipping a couple inches above the base of the plant she started a small pile to her right. "I mean.. gills an' webbed fingers." Lark laughed and shook her head slightly. "Pretty neat it happens just from a plant, yknow?" Stacking the lavender gently she looked at River and continued to snip at the base of the stalks. "Honestly, I wish I knew more about Herbology. All the different plants an' everythin' are interesting plus it all seems so useful for just about any Wizardin' job." Moving down the row of purple flowers and bending forward more, Lark turned her attention back to the herbs. "Not to mention Tavish is sorta nice ta look at so class goes by pretty decent." Lark gave another laugh, admittedly it was probably the accent the most but the girl found his eyes kind and he was quite knowledgeable.
"What about you? Is Herbology somethin' you're interested in or any other classes. I mean you're ahead of me in years right? Gotta give me some sage advice." Lark grinned.

@Lark FlaerAs River carefully snipped of plant after plant, she listened to Lark while she was talking. She had decided to head for lavender first, which River understood, as the smell would be reason enough in itself to harvest those herbs.
"Yeah, gillyweed is really cool", she said, as she stood up to shake her legs a bit, before she kneeled back down once more. A grin appeared on Rivers face as Lark mentioned Tavish, she herself hadn't really thought much of that, but she'd frequently hear other girls in her class mentioning him.
After a bit, River had a nice amount of bundles consisting of tied together dittany. She got up, and headed to the place where she'd seen the Thyme, and she began snipping them too.
"Personally, I'm really interested in Defence Against the Dark arts", she told Lark, and looked up for a second. "I find pretty much anything in that class to be super fascinating, even though it is a very challenging class". After her first year of classes, River had grown fond of most of them. The act of being thrown into this new world, after living in the bland muggle life had sent her down a spiral of wanting to learn absolutely everything she possibly could about magic.
"Have you grown extra fond of any specific classes so far into your time here?", the ravenclaw asked curiously, as she continued collecting the Thyme in little bundles. Her fingers were getting colder, and she couldn't really feel them too well any more. "Do you think we have enough? Perhaps it's smart to begin heading into the greenhouse to hang them up for drying?", she asked, and held up her collection of herbs.WC || 284 (950+284= 1234 total)

Finishing up a decent pile of lavender, Lark picked up the bundle and looked over to a bed of nettles not far off. She remembered Dale saying something about them being rather important in Potions and having learned about them in the Cure for Boils potion, so she figured that would be another good plant to get next. It looked like some sort of smaller basket was sitting next to one of the beds so Lark took advantage of it and placed the lavender inside, nestling it under something that appeared to be brown paper of the top to separate the herbs. Making sure to put on gloves she carefully snipped at the top rows of leaves and placed them into the basket.
"Oh! Yes! Defense Against the Dark Arts is such a good class!" Lark had been a little bummed with her grade on the last set of homework feeling her opinion judged a little too harshly by the Professor, yet really was enjoying the content of the work. Clipping some more of the nettles as she worked her way down the row of plants, Lark nodded at River saying it was a rather challenging class. She completely agreed.
"Have you grown extra fond of any specific classes so far into your time here?"
Jumping at a twinge of pain in a fingertip as one of the nettle leaves poked through her glove, Lark sat back on her heels. "I think Potions is actually startin' ta grow on me a bit. Although, I've always loved Astronomy. My father used ta go over a lot of that with me back home." A smile crossed her lips as she thought about the summer days camping out in the yard with her father, starring up at the night sky.
Lark stood as River asked about them possibly having enough herbs to go inside with, glad that she had brought it up. She hadn't realized just how cold her fingers and tip of her nose was until the possibility of warmth came to mind. "Yeah, seems like we have a good amount!" Walking over to River, Lark held out the basket to her. "Want ta put yours in here? I can carry 'em in."

@Lark Flaer"Yes, thanks", River said, and carefully put the bundles of herbs into the basked which Lark carried up to her. They had been working fast, and time passed quite quickly when working together. She had been expecting to freeze to death before now, but so far, at least as far as she knew, she was still alive. No reason to freak out.
River walked quickly through the door, and stepped into the greenhouse, relieved to get some escape from the raw air outside. The cleared and prepared greenhouse had already been used for drying, and a few herbs were already well into the process of air-drying, just like Professor Tavish had said.
Looking down at her jeans, she could see some nice marks of dirt covering her knees. She brushed it off quickly, and sniffled as her nose was cold, and at this point, looked quite like a tomato in colouration.
"I guess we're supposed to just leave the tied bundles here right?", she asked, as she began finishing up the last couple of bundles. Tying them neatly together at the ends with a string. She hadn't really thought of it before, but herbs were apparently a sort of aesthetic she found quite pleasing to look at.
River finished off the final bundle with stiff, cold fingers, "Right... I believe that's it", she brushed off her hands, and looked up at Lark with a smile, "Thanks for helping out by the way, it was nice not having to sit out in the cold all alone". After she had placed everything where it belonged, she left the greenhouse and hurried back up to the castle to tuck into a nice warm blanket the last bit of time before classes were to begin.River exits the threadWC || 1234+291=1525 (WC was completed earlier ofc)

Lark followed River inside and set the basket down on one of the tables, her fingers hurting a bit from the cold and being bent in one particular position for too long. All she could think about now was the fire back in the Ravenclaw Commons.
"I guess we're supposed to just leave the tied bundles here right?"
Lark noticed a cleared out spot that must have been set up for the Professor once all the herbs were gathered up. There appeared to even be a bit of a pile started, maybe from other students? "Yeah, seems like he'll just come in an' work when he gets time." Waiting for River to finish up the bundles she was working on, Lark sniffled. The cold had definitely done a number on her nose and cheeks she could only imagine they were flushed completely red from the chilly air. That idea of the fireplace was getting more and more appealing by the minute.
Removing the bundles she had gotten of lavender and nettles, Lark gently set them down on one of the tables. It looked like some twine and clips were sitting close by. She assumed to hang the lavender to dry, having seen her mother do it a couple times.
"Thanks for helping out by the way, it was nice not having to sit out in the cold all alone"
"Of course! It did seem ta make it go by much faster." A chapped smile crossed the girl's face, her cheeks burning a bit brighter shade of red as warmth started to creep into them once more. Waving a goodbye to River as she left, Lark tidied up the bundles once more, just a little obsessively, and placed the basket on top of a couple others that had been left by the door. Pulling her coat around her tighter Lark left the greenhouse and rushed her way back towards the castle and that fireplace hoping to catch her friends for some hot cocoa.
