Night-time Wandering
Under the covers, Cormac was fully dressed. As it turns out, he had some against-school-policy business to attend that night. Once he was certain all his roommates slept, the 11-year-old jumped out of bed. The Common Room was empty and not a sound was to be heard in the Tower of Ravenclaw, just as one would expect at such unearthly hours.
Along the dark corridors, some of the people inside the pictures snored peacefully and Cormac would have sworn he heard a couple yawns coming from armoured statues.
The Hufflepuff kid had agreed to meet him by the Boys Lavatory, in the fourth floor. That was quite a long way from his dormitory; even longer if the stairs opted to go against him. He was glad Jack had invited him to his late night excursion. The curiosity of most of the kids he'd met so far seemed to revolve around academics, and didn't quite match his eagerness to cautiously test the rules.
Although Cormac wasn't one to let the fear of getting caught deter him from partaking in risky activities, the sound of footsteps coming from behind him startled the boy out of his mind. A variety of flimsy excuses flooded his brain as he slowly turned around. ‘Please, for Merlin's sake, let it not be the Headmaster, let it not be the Headmaster,’ he silently prayed.
“It's you!” Cormac said, relieved as his eyes fell upon Jack Warren.

The moon was nearly about to reach its zenith in the sky. It was nearly midnight. Jack wore nearly all black. He didn't want to wear his annoyingly stuffy uniform, but rather a black t-shirt, and black sweatpants. He was not planning on getting caught as he explored. As the boy stood and waited for the Ravenclaw outside of the fourth-floor boy's restroom, a worrying realization came over him. What if this dude, Cormac, was a nark? What if he snitched to a prefect. God forbid that he decided to go above the prefects and to a professor. The thought of that made him anxiously start to pop his fingers. He could feel cool air flowing through the hallways. The wind tousled his hair, dropping a stray strand to fall in front of his right eye. Swinging his head to the side, he attempted to throw the rebellious hair out of his eyesight.
Jack was early. The thought of exploration was enough to make him restless, so he had arrived early. Slowly he crept forward towards the nearest intersection. Suddenly a voice cut through the silence. Cormac's normal volume caused Jack to cringe. "Shhhhhh!" the boy shushed, even though he did wear a large grin on his face. At least he wasn't a nark. Now speaking a whisper, jack spoke. "Glad you decided to show. I was worried that you would wuss out. Now..." He rubbed his hands together, "are you ready to explore?" The boy raised an eyebrow and his grin grew larger.

Night-time Wandering
“Are you ready to explore?” asked Jack.
“Sure I am,” answered Cormac, straightening his robe and feeling his hearbeat regain its normal rhythm.
As the two boys started to head down the corridor, dozens of possible destinations flashed through Cormac’s mind. Being found in any of them at such hours would surely earn them a month worth of detentions, though.
Someone had told him about this ghost girl that lived in the Abandoned Toilets, on the second floor. They could pay her a visit. He would also like to know what the Great Hall looked like while empty and quiet. The Dungeons would surely be a creepy place to fool around at night-time, too; that was tempting.
But then, there was something even more appealing than wandering around sleeping Slytherins. There were probably over seven school rules that forbid what he was about to suggest and they could definetely forget about detentions if they were to get caught; they would be expelled and sent back home in the blink of an eye.
“I’ve heard they’ve brought a brand new bunch of mandrakes for Herbology class,” Cormac whispered, “They must be in the greenhouse.”
The two boys were now going down a flight of stairs; no fixed direction.
“It’s alright if you chicken out of this, ‘cause it might get us kicked out, but,” Cormac spoke in a low voice, unable to decipher Jack’s expression due to the lack of light, “I say we go into the greenhouse and take one mandrake. Then we come back here and one of us keeps it in their dormitory for the night. Tomorrow morning, we sneak it into the Great Hall and pull it out of its pot during breakfast. I’ve read they scream like crazy; we’ll wake up every single student for the day. If we’re careful so that nobody sees us, it’ll be one hell of a laugh. What do you think?”

Night-time Wandering
Jack's eyebrows raised in surprise at the boy's Mandrake idea. That was bold. That was very bold. Jake stayed directly in stride with Cormac, as he continued to listen to the boy. Mandrakes. Those are nasty lil' things, aren't they? Jack had heard rumors about how their cries could cause your ears to bleed. The whole plan seemed destined to fail terribly, but it wasn't like he actually cared. This opportunity was too golden to actually pass up.
"Lemme stop you right there." He said softly, raising his hand palm up. "First things first. I have never chickened out of anything before." Jack affirmed, "Secondly, you've surprised me, Ravenclaw. I didn't think you had it in you think of such a fantastic plan." An evil grin curled across his face, and he planted a friendly punch against Cormac's arm. "But other than implying that it's okay that I could chicken out, which I refuse to do, I think we are going to be good friends if you keep up with the good ideas."
He could just imagine the chaos the next morning. He didn't want the dang thing in his dorm room, but he wouldn't tell that to Cormac. Once they got it, he just assumed he could convince the Ravenclaw to take it. He would have to be a fool to want to keep it in his dorm. All of his dormmates would never let him hear the end of it if he was caught.

Night-time Wandering
Jack was in. It had taken Cormac surprisingly little to find a partner in crime; he could already envision a year of mischiefs and rule-breaking and occasional night wandering. The mandrake stunt was going to be big. Both boys headed towards the castle's entrance. Once in the grounds, complete darkness engulfed them. Had Cormac paid closer attention in Charms class, he would be able to cast Lumos and light their path with his wand. Luckily enough, he had brought a battery torch with him, preventing his magical incompetence from ruining their risky business.
They silently entered one of the greenhouses. Cormac had seen pictures of mandrakes before on his mother's Herbology magazines, so it was fairly easy for him to spot them aligned at the back of the room.
"I'll go get one," Cormac said and picked up one random pot.
Biting back laughter, the two exited the greenhouse and hurriedly returned to the castle, chatting excitedly about their devilish plan. When it was time for them to part ways, the Ravenclaw offered to hide the plant for the night, since it had been his idea in the first place.
"I'll meet you tomorrow morning at the Great Hall's entrance," Cormac whispered. "I'll sneak it inside my backpack. When I sit down at the Ravenclaw table, I'll leave the bag behind me; you then pass by it and..."
Just then, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed through the corridor. The boys looked at each other with wide eyes.
"What was that?"
